"Two Modern Noh Plays" by Yukio Mishima presented by Midtwenties Theater Society & 2019 Vancouver Fringe Festival
“POET: Listen to me. . . . I am just what I seem, a threepenny poet, without even a woman who'll look at me. But there's something I respect-the world as reflected in the eyes of young people who love each other, a hundred times more beautiful than what they actually see—that I respect. Look, they're not the least aware we're talking about them. They've climbed up high as the stars. You can see the glint of starlight under their eyes, next to the cheeks. . . . And this bench, this bench is a kind of ladder mounting to heaven, the highest lookout tower in the world, a glorious observation point. When a man sits here with his sweetheart he can see the lights of the cities halfway across the globe. But if (climbs on the bench) I stand here all by myself, I can't see a thing. . . . Oh, I do see something—lots of benches, somebody waving a flashlight—must be a policeman. A bonfire. Beggars crouching around the fire. The headlights of a car. They've passed each other now and are heading toward the tennis courts. What was that? A car full of flowers. Performers returning from a concert? Or a funeral procession? (He gets down from the bench and sits.) That's all I can see.
OLD WOMAN: What rubbish. Why in the world do you respect such things? It's that same silly nature of yours which makes you write sentimental poems that nobody will buy.
POET: And that's exactly why I never invade this bench. As long as you and I are occupying it, the bench is just so many dreary slats of wood, but if they sit here it can become a memory. It can become softer than a sofa, and warm with the sparks thrown off by living people. . . . When you sit here it becomes cold as a grave, like a bench put together out of slabs of tombstones. I can't bear that.
OLD WOMAN: You're young and inexperienced, you still haven't the eyes to see things. You say the benches where they sit, those snotty-faced shop clerks with their whores, are alive? Don't be silly. They're petting on their graves. Look, how deathly pale their faces look in the greenish street light that comes through the leaves. Their eyes are shut, the men and women both. Don't they look like corpses? They're dying as they make love. (Sniffs around her.) There's a smell of flowers, all right. The flowers in the park are very fragrant at night, just like those inside a coffin. Those lovers are all buried in the smell of the flowers, like so many dead men. You and I are the only live ones.
POET: (Laughs.) What a joke! You think you're more alive than they are?
OLD WOMAN: Of course I do. I'm ninety-nine years old, and look how healthy I am.
POET: Ninety-nine?
OLD WOMAN: (turning her face into the light) Take a good look.”
Tumblr media
“OLD WOMAN: I know what the face looks like of someone who's come back to life—I've seen it often enough. It wears an expression of horrible boredom, and that expression is what I like. . . . Long ago, when I was young, I never had the sensation of being alive unless my head was all awhirl. I only felt I was living when I forgot myself completely. Since then I have realized my mistake. When the world seems wonderful to live in, and the meanest little flower looks big as a dome, and flying doves sing as they go by with human voices . . . when, I mean, everyone in the whole world says "Good morning" joyously to everyone else, and things you've been searching for ten years turn up in the back of a cupboard, and every girl looks like an empress . . . when you feel as if roses are blooming on the dead rose trees, then—idiotic things like that happened to me once every ten days when I was young, but now when I think of it, I realize I was dying as it happened. . . . The worse the liquor, the quicker you get drunk. In the midst of my drunkenness, in the midst of those sentimental feelings and my tears, I was dying. . . . Since then, I've made it a rule not to drink. That's the secret of my long life.
РОЕТ: (teasing her) Oh! And tell me, old lady, what is your reason for living?
OLD WOMAN: My reason? Don't be ridiculous! Isn't the very fact of existing a reason in itself? I'm not a horse that runs because it wants a carrot. Horses, anyway, run because that's the way they're made.”

[Victoria, BC] Post Fringe Festival Thoughts and Upcoming Events Schedule
We have our thoughts post #yyjfringe @IntrepidTheatre, and also list what's coming up in #yyj #yyjarts #yyjeats The party isn't over yet. ;) #ribfest #cocktail #meat #music
The 2022 Victoria Fringe Festival is a wrap, and it’s almost a full return to form. This event ran from August 24 to Sept 4 and was well attended. I passed by many lineups while wandering Downtown Victoria at those venues that hosted, and the one big thing that changed, as a result of the pandemic, was the lack of seeing talents run from venue to venue to pass along flyers of their shows, and…

Nothing is stopping the transcult from opening their own shelters and offering services for abuse survivors
Prolific author JK Rowling is under fire from trans activists after throwing her support behind a new counseling service for female survivors of sexual violence in the Edinburgh area, leading many pro-woman advocates to question the priorities of her detractors.
On December 12, Rowling announced via Twitter that she was funding Beira’s Place, a facility described as being women-led and catering to female survivors of sexual violence. The service will provide support, advocacy, and information to women aged 16 and over.
Tumblr media
In an exclusive interview with columnist and women’s rights advocate Suzanne Moore about her new project, Rowling stated that she was driven by her own experience with sexual violence, and had noticed a gap in available resources to provide exclusively woman-centered care.
“As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I know how important it is that survivors have the option of women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time,” Rowling said.
Many on social media celebrated the opening of Beira’s Place, including Vancouver Rape Relief, a Canadian rape crisis shelter that was stripped of Vancouver city funding in 2019 after refusing to change their female-only mandate. The center was vandalized for their sex-based policy, with trans activists nailing a dead rat to the door of the building during the public battle.
“Sisterhood is powerful! Congratulations @beirasplaceand @jk_rowling for the new women-only sexual assault support centre for women and girls in Edinburgh and the Lothians,” tweeted Vancouver Rape Relief from their official account.
Tumblr media
One Twitter user responded to the Rowling’s announcement, saying: “I’m crying. This is amazing. THIS is what protecting women and being a true feminist looks like. Thank you to @jk_rowling on behalf of #YoungGCFeminists and women everywhere.”
But the response was not uniformly positive, with many trans activists immediately jumping to condemn Rowling for supporting a shelter with a female-only mandate.
Responding to the news, several critics speculated that a policy which excludes men would inevitably result in “masculine-presenting” or “butch” women being turned away.
“Imagine being a slightly masc[uline] presenting cis woman and going to a shelter like that at your worst moment and your greeting is somewhere between the 3rd degree about your birth sex and an actual call to prove it somehow,” said one Twitter user.
Tumblr media
“I would love to know what the process is for checking that any woman using this service is definitely not trans, what kinds of checks will you be doing to the the already vulnerable sexual/domestic abuse victims? I have major concerns for women’s safety here,” tweeted another.
Multiple trans activists accused Rowling of funding Beira’s Place with the specific intention of “spiting” trans-identified males.
“I think it’s actually quite telling as to the vindictive nature of JK Rowling that’s she’s had the means, resources and power to set up a crisis center for over 20 years, and she’s only decided to do it now so she can use it as some bizarre point scoring against trans victims.”
Yet Rowling has a history of using her substantial wealth to contribute to humanitarian causes. In 2012, she was famously removed from Forbes‘ billionaire list due partly to her hefty charitable contributions. At the time, it was estimated that she had given away approximately $160 million during the course of the year.
Jen Ives, an activist who also identifies as a comedian, mocked the support service and victims of sexual violence in response to Rowling’s announcement.
Ives had previously gone after Rowling during his set at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival earlier this year. However, when the audience failed to laugh at his jokes, a fellow comedian complained that Ives was a victim of “transphobia,” and the audience’s cold response was a “hate crime.”
Tumblr media
Another trans activist who uses the moniker ‘Cathy Brennan’ called the opening of Beira’s Place “one of the most sinister moves” he’s seen from “UK transphobes.” Brennan infamously harassed feminist campaigner Julie Bindel after she gave a speech at Edinburgh University in 2019.
As Bindel left the building after giving a speech on male violence against women, Brennan “lunged” at her while calling her derogatory names. Bindel reported that Brennan had attempted to punch her in the face but a security guard pulled him away.
Former TV presenter and Big Brother contestant, Jonathan “India” Willoughby also tweeted in response to the news about Beira’s Place, comparing masculine women to males.
“The whole point of JK Rowling’s new centre is banning women who happen to be trans. But what happens to butch women who could be men?” Willoughby tweeted.
This is not the first time Willoughby has compared masculine women to men. Willoughby has previously said that butch lesbians have effectively “transitioned” and “behave like blokes.”
Tumblr media
Willoughby had recently come under fire for racist and sexist comments he made towards broadcaster Esther Krakue, calling her a “talentless bigoted blackwomen [sic]” and a “b*tch.”
But the anti-woman backlash wasn’t isolated to social media.
Earlier today, The Independent published an op-ed from Ryan Coogan, who compared a single-sex rape crisis shelter to opening a “whites-only orphanage,” while LGBT outlet INTO used a graphic featuring JK Rowling and devil heads.
The Times reported that Rape Crisis Scotland has released a statement regarding Beira’s Place stating that while they welcome any new services with “rigorous safeguarding procedures,” they urged the service to be opened to trans-identified males as well.
The CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis is a trans-identified male, Mridul Wadhwa. He was hired for the position despite the job advertisement for the role specifying it was open only to women.
Wadhwa came under fire last year for comments he made during a podcast interview in which he stated that “bigoted” sex abuse victims who request female-only support should expect to be “challenged on their prejudices” and told to “reframe their trauma.”
The mixed-sex policy at Edinburgh Rape Crisis in part motivated Rowling to set up Beira’s Place. Rowling said that the single sex service fills an “unmet need for women in the Lothians area.”
Wadhwa’s position as CEO of Rape Crisis has been highly criticized by feminists as he is reportedly still legally male and does not hold a gender recognition certificate. Tensions are currently high in Scotland between trans activists and feminists as SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon aims to push through reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. This will remove all safe guarding requirements to obtaining a GRC such as the need for a gender dysphoria diagnosis.
Ahead of the proposed reforms, For Women Scotland, a feminist campaign group, had petitioned the Scottish government to protect sex in law. But a Scottish judge ruled against them the day after Rowling’s announcement.
“Sex is not limited to biological or birth sex, but includes those in possession of a [Gender Recognition Certificate] obtained in accordance with the 2004 Act stating their acquired gender, and thus their sex,” the Judgementhanded down on December 13 read.
The verdict means that a male who holds a legal document indicating a gender change should be treated as a “female” across the board in all areas of law. This has concerned women’s rights advocates as Gender Recognition Certificates will soon be available to almost any applicant, with very limited requirements.
Rowling has become a target for abuse since first speaking out against gender identity ideology in December of 2019. Rowling had tweeted in support of Maya Forstater, a researcher who was involved in a high-profile tribunal case after her employer did not renew her contract on the basis of her belief that biological sex cannot be changed and is relevant to public policies. Rowling then went on to publish a detailed essay in 2020 outlining her concerns with gender ideology.
The celebrated children’s author has since refused to back down to the trans activist mob and has continued to use her platform to spread awareness about how gender ideology impacts the rights and safety of women and girls. This has led to her receiving countless death threatsover the years. Several trans activists even picketed her home before posting her address online last November.

Our featured speaker for March is the charming and irreverent magician Rob Teszka who will share his fascinating experiences and struggles with creativity through the lens of the global theme PERSPECTIVE.
Weaving interesting stories and unusual ideas together with wit and skill, Teszka entertains at a variety of public festivals and private events, is the president of the Fraser Valley Magic Company, and has toured across Canada with his solo Fringe show. The thing he’s most proud of though, is producing and hosting the monthly Parlour Magic Show, Vancouver’s own variety magic show that just entered its 4th year! Incidentally, Rob hated writing this bio for himself, because bragging is really quite unnatural for him. A favourable review once called him “a genuine eccentric”. It’s probably because he knots his own bow ties.
Every month we ask our speaker a handful of probing questions to give us a deeper glimpse into their life and relationship with creativity:
How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career? Sometimes, a person gets driven to express a Thing, by -any means necessary-. Creativity is the practice of solving problems that get in the way of fully communicating the Thing. My chosen medium happens to be magic, which is beautifully cross-disciplinary and lets you express even the impossible. There is a Thing that should not be: and yet, here it is. To bring my Things to life I have dipped my paintbrush into many disciplines: acting, engineering, standup comedy, improv, psychology, puppetry, clown, storytelling–and whatever else I’ve needed to express the Thing.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy? Seeing live performance! My cup is always refilled whenever I go to a show, and fills most quickly when I’m at a festival and seeing all the shows I can. Especially the weird ones.
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person? Rob! It’s me, you from the future! That feeling you feel, when in front of an audience? It’s JOY. It doesn’t have to be rare. You can find it in so many different ways. Don’t let the bastards grind you down–you are allowed to pursue joy! DO IT!
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings? Why not both? Have Erwin Schrödinger on. Ha! But for real: I’d be interested to see P.T Barnum, the infamous humbug and sideshow exhibitionist. I suspect he’d be wildly entertaining, but also insightful about North American showbiz culture, the way spin and bluster dazzle the public, and the real power of a fake story. Alas, he was waaaaaay more problematic than his portrayal by Hugh Jackman in the Greatest Showman musical would suggest, so it’s probably for the best that we’ll just have to imagine what he’d say.
How would you describe what you do in a single sentence to a stranger? I entertain by using lies to share truths—and am disarmingly open about the lying part.
What keeps you awake at night? My goddamned phone. I am as a moth to its artificial glow.
What’s your one guilty creative indulgence? I like popcorn movies and prefer pulpy genre to literary fiction! For instance: my favourite movies are Raiders of the Lost Ark and Ghostbusters, and I love cozy murder mysteries and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. I don’t really watch movies or read books that make me feel sad or weird, and I guess I feel guilty about it because I’m seeking fun escapism rather than erudition? Heavens, what will become of my pretentious reputation!
What fact about you would surprise most people? I’m a vaguely competent pianist and singer, and can convincingly accompany myself on the ukulele.

INTERVIEW with Stephen Near of Same Boat Theatre and the limited run of the award-winning play WHALE FALL
Tumblr media
Same Boat Theatre's Whale Fall is a one-act drama about the extinction of Canada’s southern resident orca population and the journey of one woman to find the last remaining whale while struggling to hold on to the memories of her father. Part coming-of-age story and part fable for the era of climate change, Whale Fall is an intimate duet between two characters as they navigate the painful waters of family, memory and species extinction. Written by Stephen Near (SN) and directed by Aaron Joel Craig, the show has received critical praise in both Hamilton and Vancouver and now, the show returns to Hamilton once more for a limited run before heading to Toronto.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Stephen and he shared several personal reflections of the show’s success at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and what plans the company has for Whale Fall in the future....
What inspired your company to take Whale Fall to the Vancouver Fringe Festival this past summer?
SN: Well, the play takes place on the West coast, and starts off with the main character in Vancouver and then making her way up the coast. And, if any animal is emblematic of Vancouver, it’s the orca. They’re a regular sight for whale watching tours in the Georgia Strait not to mention holding special significance for the Indigenous people of the West coast. So, as a play that directly tackles the issues of species extinction and climate change through the story of the orca, Vancouver felt like a natural fit. Even when we were rehearsing the play last year, we talked about showing it out West. And, to be fair, we did apply to a number of other Fringes this past year including Toronto and Edmonton but they didn’t materialize. Vancouver was our one and only draw so it felt a bit like we were destined to show the piece out West.
2. How would you compare Vancouver's Fringe Festival experience to the Hamilton Fringe Festival experience?
SN: When we first performed Whale Fall at Hamilton Fringe, we were coming out of the pandemic with a brand-new script which we’d never tried in front of an audience. For Aaron and I, it was also our first time working with Stephanie Hope Lawlor and Ray Louter as actors in a really personal play. The success of the play in Hamilton took us a bit by surprise. Not because we had doubts in the material or the performers, but that the audience would react to it so positively and strongly. Our houses and the reviews reflected that. In Vancouver, we didn’t have a built-in audience. We had the accolades from the show but we were facing a much larger festival (80+ shows) and an unfamiliar community.
It felt a bit overwhelming but, at the same time, we lucked out in our venue. Aaron and Ray knew some of the people at the Pacific Theatre and that allowed us a bit of reassurance when the show first hit the stage. We managed to catch a few shows outside of our performances but a lot of our downtime was spent keeping ourselves focused away from home and experiencing Vancouver as a company. It was an amazing experience, and one which has strengthened us as a company.
3. Did Whale Fall resonate differently with the Vancouver audience due to the show’s subject matter? If so, how?
SN: It certainly hit a lot of audiences harder. There were several viewers who came out of the performance weeping and others who met me after the show or subsequent Fringe line-ups who really had a strong reaction to the piece. But, perhaps, what made the biggest impression were the stories people told me both post-show and in Fringe line-ups when I was handing out postcards. Many audience members told me of their own close encounters with orca or whales, in general. Some older viewers were also involved in the environmental movement that started in BC in the 70s and 80s and connected with the play on that level.
By and large, though, I think the themes of searching for hope and coming to terms with loss resonated in many of the same ways as they did with Hamilton audiences which perhaps points to why this play has such universal appeal
4. How has the production changed since its initial staging in 2022? What have been some highlights and challenges in reworking aspects of the show?
SN: The script has changed in some significant ways although the overall theme and story have not. We are still following Becca’s journey to find the last remaining orca. We are still reliving moments between her and her father, Steven. But I did write additional scenes and refine existing ones especially where they concerned Becca’s past conversations with her dad. We touch on a lot more specific moments that helped to clarify her journey in the present. And we also changed the ending. A bit. That was a magical moment in rehearsal when we all sat down, knew our original ending wasn’t hitting the way we wanted it to and hammered out something new.
Revisiting and reworking scripts post-first run is actually my favourite part of the playwriting process and I know we all enjoyed diving back into the play after a year away from it. At the same time, the challenge always comes when you revisit a piece. You ask questions of the material and the characters and the answers aren’t always easy to find. I mean, Aaron, Stephanie and Ray all continued to probe the characters and their motivations even after the script was largely nailed down. For me, that’s when you find the real gems hidden within a script.
5. Whale Fall will enjoy a limited Hamilton return at the Hamilton Conservatory of the Arts later this month. What influenced this decision and what’s next for the production (or Same Boat Theatre in general)?
SN: After the HCA Performing Arts Sunday Series, Whale Fall will premiere at Toronto’s Red Sandcastle Theatre. Located in the city’s east end theatre district, Red Sandcastle is home to Eldritch Theatre and is Toronto’s longest operating ‘storefront’ theatre and we’re really excited for the chance to show it there. The desire to bring the show to Toronto really came out of mine and Aaron’s desire to expand the reach and the audiences of Same Boat. As for Red Sandcastle, I know the owners really well. They took the theatre over during COVID and have really opened up the space as an alternative theatre venue so we wanted to support them.
As for what’s next for Same Boat, well, Aaron and myself have a lot of things we’re cooking. And, when we were in Vancouver, we had a chance to collaborate with Stephanie and Ray on some of those plans. I can’t speak to specifics but there’s lots more to come. The success of Whale Fall, both here and in Vancouver, as well as the fact that we’re coming up on our 10th anniversary has really given Aaron and I the confidence to take the company in some bold new directions. The fact is that we’ve been creating new theatre together in this city for over a decade. We push each other professionally and creatively while being dedicated to keeping the company moving forward. Our company is a Hamilton success story… and the story’s not done.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The journey of Whale Fall continues on for Same Boat Theatre and I am very excited that the production will continue to deliver some very beautiful and tragic insights into how climate change affects more than what the eye can see. In my Hamilton Fringe review, I referred to the show as "harrowing" and "poetry in motion." I stand by these statements and hope Hamilton and Toronto audiences resonate with this show and with the fascinating original work Same Boat Theatre provides.

Q: Hank, you visit Canada more than any other countries. So what festivals you all been to up der?
A:
fringe theater festival - Winnipeg
international busker festival - Halifax
international fireworks competition - Vancouver
Canada Day - twice — Ottawa, Montréal
NXNE — Toronto (my band played it, I didn’t really experience much at all as a performer)
Dance Festival TransAmeriques - Montreal
international Jazz Festival - Montreal
Nights of Africa Festival - Montreal
Montreal Completement Cirque (Circus Festical) - Montreal
Funny HaHa Comedy Fest whatever it’s called - Montreal
I guess that’s 10 Canada festivals for me, or 11 if you count two Canada days.
I’ve also seen Shakespeare performed in Vancouver and Stratford, which I think they may call it a Shakespeare festival at both so I guess it could be 13, but those were just one-off ticketed events for me.
I liked following J-Pod on the orca tour in Canada… sometimes I think it’s a bad idea to drag the kiddos away from their video games and T Swift tho as those are good containment chambers for the American child to avoid degrading the global environment from.
I want to say I also saw some dancing in Wuebec city.
Hamilton, Canada had an awesome epic huge industrial gay bar.

Barry Potter and the Magic of Wizardry, An Interview and Where to Find This Show Next
There's lots to like about the #parody of the #harrypotter universe from the talent known as @DetectiveDarrow! Barry Potter and the Magic of Wizardry is playing at select #fringefestivals worldwide and we got an #interview!
Although Barry Potter and the Magic of Wizardry isn’t headed to the Vancouver Fringe Festival, fans will have to check social media to find where Tim Motley will be performing next. I’m sure this talented magician-comedian has a lot more shows lined up during the remainder of this year, and as for what he’ll do afterwards, we have to wait and see. As a fan of his works, namely his Dirk Darrow…

Let Me Freeze Your Head: A Modest Proposal
Tumblr media
Last night, my wife and I happened to catch a showing of Neil MacArthur’s one-man show Let Me Freeze Your Head at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. For the uninitiated, Fringe theatre is the open mic night of the performing arts—an unjuried grab bag of monologues, improv, stand-up, and dance bundled into week-long festivals around the world.  Vancouver’s own Fringe Festival has been running for 33 years, making it the 2nd the longest running in North America. (After, of course, Edmonton, busking capital of the North.)
As this was only our second Fringe show ever (we caught the surreal Bushel and Peck just beforehand) we went into LMFYH not entirely sure what to expect. Here’s the premise:
Why leave the future to your children when you can have it for yourself? Attend our short sales presentation to learn how you can preserve your brain to live again! This one-person show takes you on a deeply personal journey into the world of human cryonic preservation. If you give Neil an hour, he may convince you to join him... when the time comes.
I’m a sucker for meta-narrative (PT Anderson, Charlie Kaufman, etc), so the ‘sales pitch in a play’ was what caught my attention. Well, that, and the part about frozen heads. I love the idea of playing up the obvious tension between what an audience thinks they are getting (entertainment) and what the performer wants to deliver (yes, entertainment, but what else?).
Dressed in an outsized suit, Neil—or I should say, Professor MacArthur—starts off his show by introducing himself as a one-time philosophy professor of at an unnamed university in Manitoba, where, “Every day, I taught the students the myth of Sisyphus. I tried to teach them to enjoy pushing the rock up the hill every day!” He goes on to describe how a chance meeting with a rogue Soviet scientist in Los Angeles changed his life—from lonely professor to salesman of Cryonics (“Not cryogenics!”)
On the level of entertainment, the show ends up being far more about one man’s emotional journey than the one-off gimmick that the title suggests.  It reminded me a little of Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, filtered through the pop culture / joke sci-fi lens of Rick and Morty.  The message—that we should connect more with each other—is appropriate for an event like the Fringe Festival. Neil himself points out as much during his opening monologue which begins “I shouldn’t be here… They don’t allow promotional events at Fringe!”
On a more personal level, I’ve been thinking a lot this summer about where we’re all headed. I’ve been lucky enough to spend a good chunk of time on three different continents in as many months, and it’s been eye-opening see how people are dealing with the changes (and challenges) we are facing. In the Pacific Northwest, where I grew up, the haze from wildfires has led to air pollution as bad as anything I saw in the four years I lived in China. Some of my friends and family are doing great—retiring, getting married, buying their first homes, taking trips around the world, applying for tenure—but many of them are struggling to get by. Old neighborhoods are disappearing, and new ones are taking their place, often without room for the people who made them great places to live in the first place.
So those are some of the things I was thinking about while I was watching Neil explain the theory of extropy—“The opposite of Entropy!”—in LMFYH.  It takes a lot of guts to get up on a stage post Donald Trump and say that things are getting better, but I’m glad that Neil (and his heads) made the trip out here to Vancouver.
If you want to catch LMFYH during its run at Vancouver Fringe, there will be two more showings this week, one on Friday at 5:00 PM, and another on Saturday at 6:00 PM at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island.  Tickets available here!

cinder-L-a  gets to go to the ball!
er, Fringe Bar dance.
After seeing not one but two fabulous Fringe plays last night, Ms L wandered to the Fringe bar where to her delight, a 60s band was playing, Bend Sinister, complete with hippie attire.  A blast from her past for Ms L.
The young people were, as young people so often are, standing around the edges bouncing a little -- longing to dance, but too shy to be the first on the dance floor.
So, to the strains of "There's Something Happening Here" Ms L took to the dance floor, and rocked it 60s style. Soon even the shy ones joined me. All it takes is one fearless weirdo -- and Ms L is always willing to volunteer.
I danced with the ones still standing round the edges, encouraging them to bring forth their inner dancer.  One young woman even danced with me from her chair!
As always, I let my body dance herself, and stand back enjoying the antics. So much feeling comes out, trapped for so many years in disability.
I think people see that. I have never received so many compliments. Young people grabbed my arm, shook my hand, hugged me and said, 'You're beautiful. I love your energy. You're so free and fearless. Keep dancing!"
One older gentleman wanted to know my training and background. He said, "You're the new Mitzi Gaynor, a performance artist." High praise indeed, as he added the Beatles were awed to meet Mitzi on the Ed Sullivan show. I saw her once at the Cave, over 40 years ago.  Stunning.
I tried to leave twice and two young men insisted, "Just two more dances."
But Cinderella's pumpkin coach awaited, her deadline not imposed by a fairy godmother but by toxic chemicals.  As the perfumed disco smoke erupted, Cinder-L-a  gathered her things and prepared to run.
Even as I quickly explained preparatory to making my swift departure before my lungs were more damaged, a handsome young man cried -- "Don't go! If the smoke makes the best dancer leave I'll tell them to stop the smoke."
How lovely. My champion. But fresh air and my bed called.
Cinderella caught the Waterfront Pumpkin and headed for home, exhausted but happy. My inner performer? Ecstatic.  Flying free at the Fringe.
Will have dancing in my one-woman show: “Benzo Oz: a Comedic Drug Withdrawal Romance” if my play is chosen.  Here’s hoping!
