Travelling to Norway I stayed a night in Uddevalla, Sweden. It was raining heavily when I arrived but I had to check out the coastline and when the rain stopped the moody atmosphere remained. Thankfully this dock was right there at the access to the sea and the timing was perfect with the sun standing right behind it.

Rebecca Tell Berg, 16 (Sweden 2003)

In 2003 in Uddevalla, the abortion pill killed one teenager and scarred another for life.

Rebecca Tell Berg was 16 and pregnant. Her mother told the news that Rebecca never wanted a chemical abortion and didn’t like the idea of it, but the abortionist talked her into it, claiming it was safe.

Rebecca was given the first part of the abortion pill regimen in a sterile hospital with medical attention. She was 7 weeks pregnant and did not tell her mother about the abortion until after it happened. Two days after taking the first pills, she came back to the hospital and was given Cytotec, which was never actually approved by the manufacturer for pregnant patients but is still commonly used off-label for chemical abortion.

Rebecca took the Cytotec in the morning and was in extreme pain by that same afternoon. She was also suffering from heavy bleeding. The hospital gave her pain medication and kept her at the hospital under medical observation for 8 hours. (This is very different from the typical legal sales of abortion pills in America, which usually involve sending the pills home with the client and ittle to no pre-abortion or post-abortion examinations.)

Rebecca was eventually sent home with a follow-up appointment scheduled for the next month. She wouldn’t live to keep that appointment.

On her last night alive, Rebecca spent the night with her boyfriend, 19-year-old Niklas Mattsson. Niklas pleaded with Rebecca to go back to the hospital because she was still bleeding a few days after the abortion, but hospital officials told Rebecca she could bleed for as much as two weeks after the abortion, so she didn’t think it was abnormal.

In the morning, Niklas made breakfast for Rebecca and left for a while. When he got home, he noticed that Rebecca hadn’t eaten anything— and the apartment was too quiet. Niklas started looking for her, unaware of what he was about to see.

To his horror, Niklas found Rebecca dead in the shower. The coroner’s report found that she died of blood loss from the abortion. An investigation was launched, but unlike most American abortionists who legally sell the pill, the hospital that dispensed the pills had not broken a single legal health or safety requirement. They did everything that they were required to do. Rebecca was given the correct dosage, medically examined before and after, kept by the hospital for observation and had a follow-up appointment scheduled. Even though the hospital had followed every safety standard and safeguard, the abortion pills still killed a 16-year-old girl who had been perfectly healthy before.

Even with so many safeguards and medical guidelines, the abortion pill could never have been truly safe. Both the unborn baby killed by chemicals and the teenager who bled to death in the shower are proof of that.

slept well – off at 4 17/.. – very foggy – found our cloaks on, not too much – pretty drive leaving the canal far left, but could see the white sails – at the river at 5 ½ - broad, wooded and very pretty – at 5 ¾ cross wooden bridge over beautiful (rapidy under the bridge) [?] of the lake, and drive thro’ fir-wood – at

Wennersborg [Vänersborg] at 6 11/.. – no horses – must wait 1 ½ hour – A- and I strolled about the town for 1 ¼ hour – long wood bridge (a couple of draw parts) over the neck of the lake – several new buildings in progress – wood on stone footings – the lake really looks like a sea – from 7 25/.. to 8 25/.. breakfasted at a ‘Restauration’ strawberries and cream and bread and butter – good – W- [V-] a nice town – burnt down all but the church in 1834 – but marvellously built up again – A- lost her pencil – off again at 8 55/.. – picturesque drive to Almo – ½ hour to wait there – same sort of drive to Raknĕbo [Raknebo] but no waiting there – off directly – and prettier drive than the last stage – I drove (1st time) the last and this stage (tired of the slowness last stage) till about 11 when A- feeling faint we had a little of Mrs. Tods’ Rice panăcacka – I drove thro’ Uddevalla

situated on good town – very pretty fiord – at a farmhouse so little way from Herrestad (single house) engaged horses which were to

to follow us immediately – so that we were off again in 8 minutes – at 1 27/.. with one, as John called him, one gentleman driver – he drove very well – the most hilly stage we have had – I slept several times but awake enough to see that from Herrestad to Quistrum is the most picturesque stage we have come – Long and steep ascents and descents – another fiord at Quistrum at 3 24/.. 3 or 4 scattered wood-built houses – alighted at 3 35/.. and went into the garden of the post-station apparently the best house in the place – good 3 arch-stone bridge at the far end of the town – higher mountains vale narrow very picturesque our road improves in mountain height and narrowness of vale and fiord as we go along – 1 4/.. hour at Quistrum waiting for horses – terrible - after being in the garden sat in the carriage writing, inking over Friday (yesterday) – a drop or 2 of rain before starting and afterwards a good deal of rain – stop in a shower at 7 25/.. at a little distance from the stage house to change horses and this man drove us thro’ the post station to Svarteborg a farmhouse to near Rabalshede [Rabbalshede], also a farmhouse, and we changed horses in the road – the owner of the horses being in his field our driver called him, and drove us to Hede, where we stopt at 9 ¾ the rain having continued the whole way – single house – the landlord in bed – supper till 11 10/.. bread and butter and milk and pancakes – F64 ½° at 11 40/.. pm; very rainy
