"THE CHRISTMAS RECORD TO END ALL CHRISTMAS RECORDS" -- ONLY THE REAL ONES KNOW!
PIC(S) INFO: Part 2 of 2 -- Spotlight on a record shop poster for the 1987 12 inch single "Hey! Santa" by English punk rock band UK SUBS. The four tracks featured on the single were lifted off the "Japan Today" LP, also released in 1987. Included is also a press advert for a UK Christmas tour.
OVERVIEW: "A double A-side on black vinyl only, released just in time for Christmas, it was the NME's single of the week and got the following write up:
"The Christmas record to end all Christmas records, this little cracker is the sort of truly disgusting meat headed punk rock record that sadly doesn't get made anymore.... Charlie Harper's merry men aren't the sort of people you'd want to share your mulled cider with but every truly first rate punk band deserves at least one moment of glory and this moment belongs to the U.K. SUBS. Lord knows they've earned it.""

RICE Alzheimer's Research Institute
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terry died on 12 March 2015, having given his PCA a run for its money.  Open about his diagnosis, he has helped to unlock the secrecy and stigma that often surrounds dementia.  His legion of fans is undoubtedly grateful that despite the inevitable progression of the PCA he was able to fight his ‘embuggerance’ and continue to produce a number of both well-received and well-reviewed books.  Terry was also a great example to me in emphasizing how important it is that, in caring for people with any type of dementia, we always look for what people with a condition like PCA can still do, rather than what they can’t: by maximizing what is possible, a person can still live well with dementia for a significant time.
–Professor Roy Jones, Director of RICE (taken from “Terry Pratchett: His World”)
I wanted to post something for the Glorious 25th about the Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE) in Bath, where Sir Terry Pratchett received treatment for Post-Cortical Atrophy, the type of Alzheimer’s disease that eventually took his life. From the organization’s website:
RICE established one of the first memory clinic services in the UK in 1987 – a service which has since been widely replicated and is now considered standard and best practice by the NHS. In fact, RICE now runs the NHS Memory Clinic in Bath and North East Somerset on behalf of the local clinical commissioning group and local authority through a sub-contract with HCRG Care Group. To date, we’ve assessed, diagnosed, treated and advised 12,000 people with memory problems and their families in our memory clinic.
Most of RICE’s clinical services and research activities take place in our own purpose built, specialist centre located on the Royal United Hospital site. The building of the RICE Centre was possible as a result of generous donations from major donors, trusts and foundations, and members of the public. RICE moved into the ground and first floor of the centre in 2008. Following the success of the DementiaPlus Appeal and further generous donations from major donors, trusts and foundations and members of the public, RICE converted the attic floor in 2019 to create more office space. This has given us access to much needed additional rooms and offices which will enable us to grow and run more services and activities. We’ve worked hard to ensure that the areas of the centre visited by our patients meets their needs and we regularly receive feedback on how much our patients enjoy their visit to our centre.
RICE not only provides clinical services to patients, but also conducts research into aging and dementia, including performing clinical trials for new drug treatments for memory-related diseases and developing other “techniques for diagnosing, managing, treating and understanding dementia and memory changes in older adults.”
Lady Lyn Pratchett is the patron of the organization, and the website includes a page about how people can donate funds or volunteer at the clinic and participate in fundraising events.
SO, if you’d like to help fund Alzheimer’s research on this Glorious 25th of May–or at any time–in honor of the Man in the Hat, take a look!

TV’s fifth NCIS series is the first one with an international setting. Let’s see if we can’t help you proactively navigate the “language” barrier, before NCIS: Sydney arrives this Tuesday, Nov. 14 on CBS.
Olivia Swann (Legends of Tomorrow) and Todd Lasance (Spartacus: War of the Damned) lead the Australia-based series as, respectively, NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey and her 2IC AFP counterpart, Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey. Rounding out the ensemble are Sean Sagar (Fate: The Winx Saga) as NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson, Tuuli Narkle (Bad Behaviour) as AFP liaison officer Constable Evie Cooper, Mavournee Hazel (Neighbours) as AFP forensic scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson, and William McInnes (Blue Heelers) as AFP forensic pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose.
Having screened the first four episodes (of eight), TVLine has compiled the “glossary” below of British and Australian terms that you will hear on the series, and could benefit from being familiar with ahead of time.
AUKUS
This comes up in the series premiere.
Created in September 2021, AUKUS is a trilateral partnership between Australia, the UK and the U.S., intended to strengthen the ability of each government to support security and defense interests. The original initiative was a commitment to support Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered subs for its Royal Australian Navy. A second initiative focused on cyber capabilities, A.I., quantum technologies and undersea capabilities. Since March of this year, AUKUS has sought “an optimal pathway” to produce nuclear-powered submarine capability in Australia while ensuring that all three partners maintain the highest non-proliferation standards.
HMAS Kuttabul / Fleet Base East
Since 1987, the Royal Australian Navy has maintained a “two-ocean navy” (Pacific and Indian) capable of responding quickly to tasking from either seaboard. The two fleet bases are known as Fleet Base West (HMAS Stirling) and Fleet Base East (HMAS Kuttabul) — the latter of which serves as the administrative hub for a precinct that includes the Garden Island dockyard and adjacent wharf facilities.
HMAS Watson
Located at Sydney’s South Head (and figuring into a midseason episode), Watson is the Royal Australian Navy’s premiere maritime warfare training establishment.
“Bloke”
I know, I know, we’re all quite familiar with this term. But AFP forensic pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose (played by William McInnes) uses it a lot, so…. Bloke as slang originated in early 19th-Century England, and means a “nice fella.”
“Telling porky pies”
Another British expression, it means to lie about something. (Personally, I think that all of us Stateside should start using this one. It’s fun!)
“Scissors, Paper, Rock”
Just like our game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” but phrased differently. (Sometimes “paper” will come first, and at least one AFP team member insists there’s also a “Taser” option.)
“Taking the piss”
Another British expression, it means to tease someone. For example, AFP Sergeant “JD” Dempsey at one point assures NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey, after some good-natured teasing, that he’s just “taking the piss.” Yeah, I quickly Googled that one!
“Nuffy”
A jovial way to call someone daft, as AFP forensic scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson (played by Mavournee Hazel) does — to herself! — in an early episode.
Wagga Wagga
As explained to me by a dear friend/Australia native, to ask or suggest to someone, “Are you from Wagga Wagga?” can be almost sarcastic, as the city in New South Wales is perhaps not the most desirable place to call home…? (See also: Gobbagombalin, a suburb of Wagga Wagga.)
Triple Zero
0-0-0, Australia’s emergency phone number à la 9-1-1.
Lastly, filed under Great Minds Think Alike, CBS itself put out a primer led by NCIS: Sydney stars Tuuli Narkle (who is Australian) and Sean Sagar (British) though between you, me and the dead petty officer at the base of that lamppost, none of the terms they cover come up in the early episodes.

Barclays -
Neurodivergence means the range of differences in a person’s brain function and behavioural traits compared to what may be considered ‘typical’ for general population. This covers everything from dyslexia to autism. It is estimated that around 15% of the UK population, roughly 1 in 7 people.
Barclays recognise the relationship between neurodivergence and trying to manage your money. For example, ADHDers may experience procrastination, impulsivity and difficulties with concentration which can impact how they manage their finances.
How can you encourage people to manage their money effectively without causing any unnecessary, additional stress? There are already lots of tools available on the market which help people manage their money. Barclays has released several features to help their neurodivergent customers. So think about whats missing, research your potential customers and the real-life problems they experience.
Barclays have always been at the forefront of banking innovation, with releasing the first debit card back in 1987 to the first cheque imaging solution to help people pay in cheques with their app. . Your concept should aim to keep Barclays at the forefront of modern banking.
Remember Barclays are a banking service, they are not there to give medical advice. If it feels right to your idea you could consider a white label product or a new sub-brand.
HAND IN- Main - Present your solution and process using a presentation video (max. 2 min) which MUST include a demonstration of the user experience, plus an optional prototype (websites, apps, etc)

Happy 62nd Birthday Richard Jobson born April 6th 1960 in Kirkcaldy.
Tumblr media
Jobson at aged 17 was the front-man with the Scottish punk band, The Skids, who had a number of hits from 1979 to 1981, the biggest song being the top-10 hit, “Into the Valley” in 1979. The band was formed by Jobson and his friend, Stuart Adamson, who later formed the band, Big Country. After Adamson departed the band, The Skids commercially declined and disbanded in 1982. Shortly after, Jobson formed the short-lived band, The Armoury Show and, although not a commercial success, were critically-acclaimed by the music press. This was to be Jobson’s last foray as a musician as he turned his attention to modelling for a few years and once claimed he was the highest male earner in the industry.
Jobson has worked extensively on Sky-TV,  presenting predominately film shows and the odd music show on VH-1. However, after the death of his old friend, Stuart Adamson, in December 2001, he reunited The Skids at a tribute gig for Adamson on May 31st, 2002 in Glasgow and, needless to say, stole the show.
Since then he has began touring regularly with The Skids as well as directing several films, the best of which, in my opinion is 16 years of Alcohol, based on his semi-autobiographical 1987 novel. New Town Killers is another he directed a decent TV movie set in Edinburgh. Jobson has also turned his hand to a wee bit acting, the most notable role was in the TV series Your Cheatin’ Heart alongside Ken Stott, John Gordon Sinclair and Tilda Swinton.
The Skids are touring at the moment performing acoustic sets, their next Scottish gig is wee venue, The Aurrie in the seaside town of Lower Largo in Fife. They will also be playing Scotland Calling 2022 at theO2 Academy, if Punk is your thing other acts playing include  Cockney Rejects, Steve Ignorant,  The Rezillos, UK Subs and Anti Nowhere League Full details of their gigs are here .https://www.the-skids.com/tour
Jobson also released a book last year,  The Story of The Skids with illustrations by Jonny Hannah.  t's a visual history of the heroes of Scottish punk and new wave, as told by Jobson

Happy Pride Month!
if you're from the UK and your LGBT education begins and ends with Stonewall, and you want to know about British history, here's a little starter pack of visual media that will entertain and educate about our past:
Maurice (1987) - After his lover rejects him, a young man trapped by the oppressiveness of Edwardian society tries to come to terms with and accept his sexuality. First gay film that has an unambiguously happy ending for a romantic couple.
It's a Sin (2021) - Ritchie, Colin and Roscoe leave home at 18 to begin new lives in 1981 London, but they find themselves challenged by a virus that most of the world ignores.
Gentleman Jack (2019) - It's 1832 in West Yorkshire, England -- the cradle of the evolving Industrial Revolution -- where landowner Anne Lister is determined to save her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, even if it means bucking society's expectations. Based on the diaries of Anne Lister.
Pride (2014) - Realising that they share common foes in Margaret Thatcher, the police and the conservative press, London-based gay and lesbian activists lend their support to striking miners in 1984 Wales. Based on a true story.
Against the Law (2017) - When Peter Wildeblood fell in love with Edward McNally in 1952, homosexuality was a crime in Britain. Their love affair would have devastating consequences for each of them. Events leading up to the Wolfenden Report and the first openly gay man to challenge discrimination in court in England.
Queer as Folk (1999) British television series that chronicles the lives of three gay men living in Manchester's gay village around Canal Street. One of the first instances of gay life being centred in a British drama rather than a sub plot.
Man in an Orange Shirt (2017) - Two entwined yet separate stories illustrate the very different challenges to happiness for two gay couples in England - Michael and Thomas in the aftermath of World War II and Adam and Steve in the present day. Although they are set decades apart, the two stories are linked by family and a painting that holds a secret that is carried down from one generation to the next.
A Very English Scandal (2018) - It is the late 1960s, homosexuality has only just been decriminalised, and Jeremy Thorpe, the leader of the Liberal party, has a secret he is desperate to hide. Based on a true story.
Bob and Rose (2001) - A gay school teacher, Bob, is fed up with the shallowness of the gay club scene in Manchester. A romantic at heart, Bob yearns to meet the right person and settle down. After yet another unsuccessful date, he meets a woman who catches his eye, Rose. Features protests against Section 28.
Hating Peter Tatchell (2021) - Documentary. The profound life story of the controversial human rights campaigner whose provocative acts of civil disobedience rocked the establishment, revolutionised attitudes to homosexuality and exposed tyrants in the fight for equality.

"WARNING: CONTAINS LANGUAGE THAT COULD CAUSE OFFENCE!"
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on one of the greatest Christmas 12 inch EP's of all time -- "Hey! Santa" is a 1987 vinyl release by English punk rock band UK SUBS, released for the Christmas market in November 1987.
"Santa Claus, you cunt, Where's my fucking bike? I've unwrapped all this other junk, There's nothing what I like,
I've wrote you a letter, And I've come to see you twice, You geriatric wanker, Where's my fucking bike?
If I wanted a pair of fucking shoes, I would've fucking asked, This cowboy suit and ping-pong set, You can stick right up your arse,
You went and mucked my order up, It's enough to make you spew, It's not just me that's pissed off, My sister's cheesed off too."

I wanted to post something for the Glorious 25th about the Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE) in Bath, where Sir Terry Pratchett received treatment for Post-Cortical Atrophy, the type of Alzheimer's disease that eventually took his life. From the organization's website:
RICE established one of the first memory clinic services in the UK in 1987 – a service which has since been widely replicated and is now considered standard and best practice by the NHS. In fact, RICE now runs the NHS Memory Clinic in Bath and North East Somerset on behalf of the local clinical commissioning group and local authority through a sub-contract with HCRG Care Group.
RICE not only provides clinical services to patients, but also conducts research into aging and dementia, including performing clinical trials for new drug treatments for memory-related diseases and developing other "techniques for diagnosing, managing, treating and understanding dementia and memory changes in older adults."
Lady Lyn Pratchett is the patron of the organization, and the website includes a page about how people can donate funds or volunteer at the clinic and participate in fundraising events.
SO, if you'd like to help fund Alzheimer's research on this Glorious 25th of May--or at any time--in honor of the Man in the Hat, take a look!

Euronymous Interview in Decibel of Death, ‘87. English Translation. Ft. Euronymous’ depraved torture fantasies involving Coca-Cola.
‘Decibel of Death’ was a French fanzine from the 80s. It’s first issue was released in ‘86, and by the summer of ‘87, it switched over from French to English-language. This has been my favourite interview of Euronymous for a long time now, so I decided I’d translate it to English so that other, non-francophone, people could enjoy it too. This issue in particular is from February of ‘87, and was their fourth issue overall.
I’ll add a link to where you can find this, and other D.O.D scans, below. If anybody wants me to translate more French, or Russian, interviews, feel free to PM me.
Note: NDLR is the editor’s notes. Any commentary or context by me will be in bold and in parenthesis, so feel free to totally ignore it. If something is between “« »” it’s because it was already written in English to begin with.
Disclaimer: if some of the sentences sound like the energizer bunny is hooked on an iv rig full of pure meth, don’t blame me, I did my best. Take it up with Euronymous himself. Also, I’m not excusing Euronymous’ poor behaviour, I’m just saying his poor behaviour is kind of entertaining.
Without further ado...
D.O.D: And once again, here’s Norwegian Mayhem. If you remember, we presented them to you back in the May issue of D.O.D. Since then, they released a new demo titled “Death Crush”!! Because of this event, we decided to ask the guitarist of this rather sinister band a few questions.
D.O.D: Okay, there’s been more than a few line-up changes in Mayhem. Can you tell us what the current one is?
Euro: Alright, there’s me on guitars, Manheim on battery, Necro-butcher on drums, and our session vocalist, Maniac.
D.O.D:  And what is the medium age of the group?
Euro: We are all 18 years old.
D.O.D: How long has Mayhem been around for?
Euro: Mayhem has been around since August of ‘84 with this line-up, before that, I played in another shitty metal group that was also called Mayhem. The other members also played in a crappy band before we all met.
D.O.D: How would you describe your music?
Euro: Ah, well, it’s like a wall of sound played at extreme speed all mixed with the sound of a chainsaw!!
D.O.D: In your opinion, who are the biggest posers on this planet?
Euro: That definitely has to be the Swedish group ‘Europe’. «Fuck them!!» I hate this band!!
D.O.D: Ha ha, what would you like to do to make them suffer?
(This is the exact moment where the interviewers realize that Euronymous is literally fucking insane. The editor censors some of the things Euronymous says because he has a very vulgar manner of speaking, so, brace yourselves. To make it abundantly clear— I didn’t censor any of this, if it was me, I’d let him continue swearing ‘til next year if he wanted to. Take it up with D.O.D!)
Euro: First of all, I’d cut them and make them eat their own (bleep)!! Then, I’ll fuck them in the ass with an empty bottle of Coke, and if they’re still alive somehow, I’ll drown them in their own piss!! (NDLR: I’d do the same to a few guys in Germany and Switzerland!!) But all of this is reserved for their guitarist, drummer and bassist, I have a far crueler torture for their singer, for him, I’m simply going to break his mirror and steal his perfume!! Haaaaafuckinghah!!! (NDLR: ahahahaha, this is so much fun!!)
D.O.D: Okay, Euronymous, onto more serious topics, who composes the most in Mayhem?
Euro: It’s me and Necro, but sometimes Manheim comes up with good riffs, he actually wrote most of P.F.A (Pure Fucking Armageddon)
D.O.D: I believe thrashers reacted pretty well to your first demo, right?
Euro: Despite the zero sound of this demo. It's true that it's actually the hardcore thrashers that appreciated it, although it was the others hating it that gave us an enormous promotion like with 'Metal Forces'.
D.O.D: Has there been groups that have influenced you?
Euro: Of course, early Venom has really inspired us, although we don’t sound like them in any way. We’re also influenced by bands like Hellhammer and Sodom.
D.O.D: Mayhem is a common band name, what do you think of other Mayhem (such as NYC Mayhem, Mayhem (WC), Mayhem (Oregon))?
Euro: NYC Mayhem* are excellent, I adore them! (NDLR: me too!!) and they call themselves NYC Mayhem. But as for the other Mayhems, they stink, «fuckin’ shit»,  like the Mayhem that’s on Metal Massacre VI*, they really stink, their music isn’t destructive like ours is at all, they don’t deserve this name, I hate them!!
D.O.D: I heard you guys played a show, how did that go?
Euro: It was really «cool», it was at a small rock festival that had around 3-400 «discofucks» (NDLR: this is the censored translation) and when we went on stage with our first session vocalist “Messiah”, we broke a bass over their mouths!! We gave these idiots hell!! Ha ha!! (I’ll link the show he’s referring to below)
D.O.D: And how did your other gigs go?
Euro: For now this has been our only show!! And we don’t know how the crowds will react at the prospect of future gigs.
D.O.D: Fair. Since we’re talking about future gigs, what will those be like?
Euro: They’ll be full of occult things, we’ll play in complete darkness and there’ll be red blood spots, chandeliers, smoke, and pig heads on stakes, it’ll be totally thrashing!!
D.O.D: How’s the Norwegian thrash scene? It’s pretty dull, no?
Euro: Right now, «it sucks», there’s no audience, but it seems to be going in the right direction with bands like Vomit*, Septic Cunts, Decay Lust, and Flowers in The Dustbin.
D.O.D: And what kind of things are your lyrics about?
Euro: depravity, like tearing someone’s (bleep), eating worms, and all those fine things!!
D.O.D: What are your favourite bands?
Euro: Really hard question, there’s so many good bands coming out but I think the bands I like the most are old Venom, Deathchamber, Sodom, Necrophagia, Destruction, Death, Kreator, Poison. (No, not THAT Poison)
D.O.D: Do you ever listen to hardcore?
Euro: «Yeah» I like Chaotic Discord, Septic Death, UK Subs, and others. It hasn’t been that long since I went to see Disorder and it was awesome!!
D.O.D: Are you considering going on tour?
Euro: No, not exactly. But soon we’ll play at a Norwegian thrash festival. We’ll also play at a thrash festival in Copenhagen, and probably do a few shows with Kreator/Necrophagia in ‘87.
(No, this isn’t a typo on my end, it actually says ‘87. There’s two reasons why this might be the case. One, it could be an error on the part of the editor, who deserves an interview of his own, or two, it could be an error by Euronymous himself since the interview might have been conducted in January. Euronymous could have mixed the years up as one sometimes does. However, ‘Death Crush’, the demo, actually came out in March of ‘87. What the interviewer and Euronymous are referring to as ‘Death Crush’ is likely ‘Death Rehearsal’, which is exactly what it sounds like, and was taped back January of ‘87.)
D.O.D: I heard you guys are recording a new demo, is it ready?
Euro: We just entered the studio to record the second “Death Crush” demo, but at the moment, we only have three songs. I’m also unsure of whether or not we’ll have enough money to record anything else, and the vocals still haven’t been put to music!!
D.O.D: There’s some rumours that you guys were contacted by certain record labels, is this true?
Euro: It’s true, we got a letter from Axe killer records saying that they were interested in us but they never listened to our music and I also sent them our demo tape but I don’t believe we’ll be receiving any letters from them now!!
D.O.D: Do you have anything to add?
Euro: Of course, «fucking ARGHHHH!!»
There, that’s all :)
If you’re interested in some of the asterisks I put in, here they are in order of their appearances:
*Unlike most of the bands Euronymous named in this interview, NYC Mayhem (and later as Straight Ahead) never released more than a few demo. They were a straight edge band from, you guessed it, NYC— Queens to be exact. Despite never releasing a full album, their sound inspired some grindcore and death metal bands, notably Carcass. They were also straight edge, which makes Euronymous’ mental breakdown over the Mayhem that was on Metal Massacre very, very ironic. Especially considering he was pretty straight edge himself, especially back in 1987– outside of maybe smoking some pot.
Here is their 1985 demo, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t-3geR1JbY4
*Metal Massacre is a series of compilation albums starting in 1982, released by Metal Blade records. Typically, these were independent and unsigned bands. Some notable ones include Metallica on the first edition with ‘Hit the lights’. Slayer in ‘83 with ‘Aggressive Perfector’. The ‘84 edition had Voivod, Overkill, and Hellhammer.
The one which Euronymous is referring to, however, is the one from ‘85. Here it is, the timestamp is 14:19 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HqwfsLvLvuY
It’s really not that bad— certainly not worth the double exclamation points.
*If you don’t know who Vomit are, you must not know much about early Mayhem. They were another thrash band who shared rehearsal space with Mayhem. Torben Grue and Kittil Kittilsen (what a sad fucking name) were also ‘in’ Mayhem at some point. Kittil once shaved off his eyebrow, but I don’t know why. Here is a picture of the dork:
Tumblr media
The show Euronymous is talking about: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mjay2Lmj9C8 yes, this is the show where Euronymous flashes his ass. I think it’s funny because he talks big but he seemed very hesitant to do it, and practically ducked backstage afterwards. Necro, on the other hand, was very proud to have broken his bass.
Well, that’s all I have. If you read this far, I hope you enjoyed the additional notes I left. Outside of a few more interviews of Mayhem, I also have a few obscure Emperor interviews that were posted to the internet in late 90s. There’s an especially funny one where Faust is allowed to interview Ihsahn and Samoth from prison. He’s sarcastic the entire time, refers to the readers as ‘morons’ and proclaims everyone should all die in a nuclear war with the same energy you cross yourself with. Overall, it’s a funny read. I also have one where he interviews Varg, and Euronymous (separately) for his own ‘zine back in the early 90s. Actually— I have A LOT of interviews of Faust for some reason, including two where he’s actually on camera. I might post them if I feel like it, or if somebody wants them. Is anyone here an especially big fan of Faust?
Last but not least, here is the link to the ‘zine:

Castigation
Man has long had an infatuation with punishment. I have entitled this piece Castigation. So, what is Castigation? It describes the infliction of severe punishment. One who administers a castigation is a castigator or chastiser. In earlier times, castigation specifically meant restoring one to a religiously pure state, called chastity. My name is Sam Evans and I am a writer who has a deep interest in the subject. I am not alone, it is a subject which fascinates a huge number of people, many of which are men.
There has always been a belief much of this resulted from the use of corporal punishment in schools, but that was banned in the UK state schools in 1987, although it continued in private schools much longer. That is 35 years ago which suggests few under the age of 50, in the UK anyway would remember it’s use. Yet the subject is as much alive today as ever and certainly with those who would never have seen its use. This means, while memories of school punishment still exist for many and may be an influence, it is far more complex than a simplistic link to school experiences.
I wrote two books, The Headmaster’s Study and The Appointment. Both describe a man setting off to visit an older man who will administer corporal punishment. The first book, The Headmaster’s Study directly links memories of such a school time visit which for him will be re-enacted 40 years later. Today, there is a thriving industry, mostly by women who offer such services to men and of course to a lesser extent women. Open any pornographic website and search, soon a huge amount of material will appear. Unfortunately, much will be very poor and usually sadly predictable and repetitive.
This article will mainly focus on men who visit men, in their case it rarely has a financial motive but instead one resulting from a shared interest in sadomasochism. Much is written on the subject of corporal punishment. Dare I suggest most of the literature available is very poor in its content and sadly written by people who have never experienced it. A long time ago, I heard an author on the radio describing how he approached writing. He said, write about what you know. It was good advice and I’ve always tried to incorporate real experiences in everything I write.
I was at school during a period where corporal punishment was an every day occurrence. This begs the question whether I fell foul of authority in school. Most certainly is the answer and in my school few didn’t! The most frequent reason to receive a dose of the cane was for being caught smoking. A pincer movement of teachers would appear each side of the cycle sheds so nobody could escape, so the line of boys and often girls was long as they were marched off to get their caning from the head teacher who like the music teacher at the school, I attended loved his work! But we were well organised. Other boys would be lining the corridors as the culprits were marched off to the head teacher’s office where he’d be busy flexing his cane and ensuring the pen was in working order to record each caning in the school punishment book. As we passed, oh yes, I was often one of them, we’d hand our cigarettes and matches to a waiting boy, making sure you memorised his face for later collection. It was one thing to get your six of the best, but to lose your cigarettes too – unthinkable!
The showers on Fridays after PE was always interesting. This gave a very visual indication of who’d been a naughty boy. Of course, we never knew if the same could be said in the adjacent room where the girls, separately of course, had their showers. A head mistress dealt with them.
Why such painful memories then later invade adult life will never be quite understood. There will be those who wish to be the headmaster, the Dom, while conversely others will wish to play the part of the pupil, the Sub. Each are richly described in both books already mentioned. In one, The Headmaster’s Study, a man reflects on an event in his younger life, while travelling to meet a Dom. It is split equally between an event true in every detail before the story moves to an invitation for the boy to visit the headmaster privately at his home, this part was pure fantasy. Genuine wishful thinking which explores what the teenage boy hoped would happen, which never did – then.
For this reason, the second book, The Appointment, explores the part in the first book which never takes place but now most certainly does in every sordid detail. All those involved in both books were living people. The man on the receiving end will remain anonymous, but he is very real. Focusing on the elderly man awaiting the arrival of the younger man at his west London flat, he certainly was real too. He was a Samaritan several times a week, talking people, often young men, out of suicide. I suspect many he saved, later visited that same flat and found themselves secured spread eagled naked to a single bed while he thrashed their bottom with a cane. Even though without doubt he was a sadist, he was still a kindly, soft-spoken man, who later offered tea and home-made Dundee cake, albeit to someone sitting uncomfortably. He really did have a portrait of Margaret Thatcher hanging on his living room wall which defied his Welsh roots. Also true, a Christmas cactus which bloomed throughout the year. How I know this for sure will have to be for the reader to decide for themselves.

The Less-Than-Sweet TRUE Stories That Inspired Candyman (1992), And The Other 5 Scariest Urban Legends That Are Still Haunting The USA
In 1987, Ruthie Mae McCoy was found dead in her apartment.
As a mentally-unstable resident of the ABLA housing project - one of the most violent on the Chicago south side - her death is far from the only one to have taken place there. But her death is one of the most well documented.
So well documented, in fact, it’s legacy stretches back to the present day.
McCoy first reported strange occurrences taking place in her apartment when returning from the psychiatric unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. She claimed someone had threatened her life to a fellow passenger in the van next to her.
They urged her to seek help, but she chose to take shelter in her fear.
In April, the local police received a phone call from a frightened woman from the ABLA housing project who was claiming someone was trying to come through her bathroom cabinet. When the police finally entered the apartment, they discovered her on the floor of her bedroom with 4 gunshot wounds peppering her torso.
Her death would be just one of the threads that weaved the horror film icon, Candyman (1992).
Today we unpick the fabric, from the twisted history of the Jim Crow South, to America’s darkest urban legends.
Tumblr media
Clive Barker never intended to create one of the most iconic Black horror films of all time.
In fact, Barker didn’t even create the feature length film that would change the face of cinema in 1992. What he did, however, was pen a short story about life on the breadline in Liverpool.
The Forbidden (1984) followed a graduate student in the UK who was studying graffiti. Among the garish curse words splashed on the walls of the run-down council estate she investigated, Helen discovered references to an urban legend that have been sprayed onto the concrete.
A legend called the Candyman.
As explained by the later films, Candyman is a pretty standard urban legend: you say his name into a mirror 5 times, and before you would appear a man sticky with sweet honey and with a hook for a hand.
Helen followed the trail back to reports and rumours mutilations and murders in the local area, failing to get any information out of the locals. She then became a victim of the Candyman himself.
Tumblr media
Despite the short story closely mirroring the plotline of the film we know and love cower away from today, there is one crucial difference aside from the setting:
In the 1992 film, and in the upcoming 2021 reboot, the Candyman is African-american. Helen’s original encounter with the urban legend in Liverpool, however, was with a pale, waxy figure bearing all the traits of a dead white man.
When Clive Barker first conjured the Candyman from his imagination, he wanted to explore the theme of class in 1980s Britain. Bernard Rose, the director of the 1992 rendition of the tale, on the other hand, wanted to explore the theme of race in America, rewriting the characters on the other side of the pond and deepening the dark story Barker first put before horror fans.
Most importantly, he focused on developing the character of the Candyman.
Where he came from, what he did, and how he did it informed the entire plot, and would span 2 sequels shortly after.
The Candyman Of Cabrini-Green
Rose set the 1990 films in the Cabrini-Green public housing projects in Chicago’s North Side. Originally built in 1942 to home thousands of African-americans fleeing the Jim Crow South during the Great Migration, the housing project captured a snapshot of racial divides in America.
It doesn’t take a historian to understand that racism fuelled the neglect of the housing, and by the time the movie hit the theatres in the early 90s, only 9% living there were actually employed.
But Candyman didn’t just capture the poverty and racism inherent in American society; it pulled us through the mirror, and showed the viewers just one of the many origins fuelling the complex and corrupted history of the USA.
Tumblr media
So Who Was The Candyman Based On?
Tony Todd was a pretty important part of the film.
Ok, aside from being one of the few black actors that managed to score a role in a horror movie that didn’t die in the opening credits, and yeah, as well as donning a prosthetic hook, he actually developed the character of the Candyman.
But most notably, he developed the backstory for the urban legend.
And the story starts in the 19th century.
Daniel Robitaille - an established painter - was commissioned to paint the portrait of a white woman. From there began an interracial relationship that was not accepted in this era.
When she fell pregnant, a lynch mob sought out Robitaille to make him pay for his alleged crime. They severed off his hand for touching a white woman, and covered him in honey, leaving him to die by being stung by bees.
What’s really striking of this tragic and terrifying image, however, is that this did happen.
Interracial relationships were scarce in the 19th and early 20th centuries in America and typically featured white men marrying black women (and consequently freeing them if they were slaves), and fed into deep-rooted racism that still haunts the country. One of the pillars of historic American racism and Western Imperial ideas of race was the ‘protection’ of white women from the ‘lustful’, ‘violent, and ‘savage’ black man.
In fact, marriage and politics were both considered the most important arguments supporting segregation, linking the freeing of slaves and interracial relations.
This fear became especially prevalent in the US after the Civil War; the influx of freed slaves would result in an increase in the forbidden relationships, bringing us back to the era Daniel Robitaille’s life was set in.
This timeline is made ever more accurate by the manner of his death: lynch mob activity peaked in the 1830s, 40s and 50s, proving that Robitaille’s story is unfortunately far too common. Although being stung to by bees and insects probably was used as a form of torture and murder, I can only trace a form of this execution method to Persia (approx. 6BC).
But what’s really quite striking is the transformation of Daniel Robitaille, an innocent and very much alive black man, to the Candyman, an urban legend who is seeking vengeance for his murder.
It’s the racial terrorism committed against Robitaille which make him so terrifying. The crimes committed against the innocent black man still tailor him into the image of a ‘scary black man’, the image that we are still haunted by today.
Tumblr media
Urban legends are so petrifying because of the outlandish, outrageous monsters at the centre of the story that appear in ordinary places. And that’s exactly what we find here. But here’s the twist: the Candyman charted the original racism that founded the Cabrini-Green housing projects, and the racism still inherent in it.
In fact, that’s the sub-plot of the movie: Helen Lyle discovers more of the everyday realities of being African-american in the US throughout the movie, witnessing poverty and police brutality as well as the garish image of a hooked man smothered in honey.
We, the viewer, are given brief snapshots of black history and the black present, even if only through a bathroom mirror.
And it’s horrifying.
So Daniel Robitaille Was Based On History - But What Was The Candyman Legend Inspired By?
To summon the Candyman - if you dare - you simply need to say his name into a mirror 5 times. This less-than-innovative manner of conjuring the Candyman is obviously based on Bloody Mary and the act of saying her name into a bathroom mirror a certain amount of times that no one actually agrees on.
It is said she will then appear to either show you the face of your future hubby, scratch your face off, or kill you. You can find out more about this legend here.
But she isn’t the only legendary beast weaved into this horror hit.
His Hook Hand is obviously an aesthetic inspiration:
A couple were busy being horror-movie-villian-bait and making out in a car when the radio suddenly blared out an emergency broadcast.
A serial killer (*gasp*) had escaped from the local mental institution (*eye-roll*) and he had a hook for a hand.
One of them heard something scrape on the car so they drove off. Believing it to be merely a tree branch they take a look and discover a hook in the side of the car.
(Their insurance premiums! Oh the horror!)
The final urban legend explicitly linked to Candyman is La Llorona, possibly the second most famous urban legend after Bloody Mary herself.
Tumblr media
This hispanic urban legend is tragic but fiercely popular: a woman had two sons and a loving husband. However, after being convinced her partner was cheating on her or loved her children more, she drowned them. She then drowned herself in grief.
It is said she still roams Latin America, looking for her deceased children and taking those who aren’t hers before drowning them when she realises they are not her sons.
To summon her (not sure why you’d want to) all you have to do is light some red candles in a room full of mirrors and yell out her name.
Candyman is thus clearly inspired by these classic american urban legends that have struck fear into gullible children and drunk teenagers for decades. But they aren’t the only stories that gave inspiration to such a film. And they certainly aren’t the scariest.
So What Are The Scariest American Urban Legends?
*clicks torch on*
#1 - The Alaska Triangle
Did you know this frosty American state is home to something scarier than Sarah Palin?
Also known as Alaska’s Bermuda Triangle, this is an area of untouched wilderness stretching from Anchorage and Juneau to Barrow. It’s earned such a reputation as this is where a lot of people go missing.
Okay, fine, an unknown area of woodland where people go missing - this isn’t a mystery, this is a tragedy. But the thing is, it's the sheer volume of people that go missing here which is so concerning.
It started in October 1972, when US House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, a congressman, and a political aide went missing while flying to Juneau. 90 aircrafts and dozens of boats scaled the area to no avail. No trace of the boat, no evidence of human life - or death. It was truly a mystery.
When more planes went missing, when more hikers didn’t return from their adventures, and when more tourists failed to return to their budget hotels, fears grew. Since 1988, 16,000 have disappeared. The rate of missing people here is more than twice the national average.
The disappearances have been traced back to a number of theories including aliens, energy vortexes, and a Tlingit Native American demon known as Kushtaka. The most popular case, however, is for the swirling vortexes of energy which can cause audio and visual hallucinations and health problems. And this isn’t the only location that allegedly homes them.
Search and rescue workers often report the physical feelings associated with vortexes with magnetic anomalies spiking in certain locations.
Could these missing people be lost in the ferocious wilderness of Alaska? Or is something else at play?
Tumblr media
#2 - Turnbull Canyon
We now turn to a sunny California, and the 4 mile loop in the Puente Hills reserve. Aside from being known for the majestic views of the Hsi Lai temple and the Rose Hills Memorial Park, it’s been home to a number of paranormal forces.
But the most interesting thing about this location is that it's been considered an evil location for centuries. Local Native American tribes called it Hutukgna, ‘the dark place’. It was forbidden ground, and they didn’t set foot there. So, when Spanish missionaries came to convert them to Christianity, they did it here.
“Now we are without hope. Now we remain for as long as the sun rises and sets in the sky”
To this day locals and tourists report feeling as if they are being watched, and legend has it Native Americans that were killed there remain as spirits, waiting for the final sunset.
The urban legend amassed a new reputation during the Great Depression. Large groups of men and women in dark robes would partake in strange rituals at night which few witnesses have seen.
One witness claims they saw a young boy strapped to a cross. He was surrounded by a circle of people who danced and chanted in unknown languages. The robed group then flipped the cross until it was upside down, and proceeded to beat the child until he was close to death. He was then taken away. We don’t know what became of the child. But we do know a flurry of disappearances and kidnappings haunted the area throughout the early 20th century.
And then it gets even worse.
In the 1930s, an insane asylum was built there. It mysteriously burnt to the ground 10 years later.
Psychic mediums and visitors report feeling unbearable at the location, from reporting classic paranormal activity such as the feeling of being watched or seeing orbs, to feeling as if someone is rummaging about in your own brain.
Tumblr media
#3 - Vampire Comte de Saint Germain
New Orleans already has a paranormal reputation. Jacques Saint Germain only blended seamlessly with this historic location. But the thing is, it is said he would have witnessed most of the history for himself.
Throughout history a man of similar stature and personality has been reported.
He was at a notable wedding in Cana where Jesus turned water into wine, he was an alchemist in the 1600s, and he was in high-society in 1742.
It was an encounter in 1760 with one Countess von Gregory which was really interesting: the Countess was convinced she knew him as the son of a man in 1710 - but he hadn’t aged a single day.
He joked, as he often did, that he was over 100 years old.
Fluent in 6 languages, his incredible abilities and knowledge made him an enviable man - and an impossible one, too.
We do know, however, that he came to New Orleans in 1902 from France and invited the elites for a special feast. He didn’t eat a single bite, but did drink dark, red ‘wine’. He then confirmed rumours of when he kidnapped a local woman, held her down, and bit into her neck.
When the police turned up to investigate, they found the room covered in blood stains. But Jacques was nowhere to be seen.
#4 - Nash Road
Like most titles of urban legends, the Three-Legged Lady gives away the story. But this tale fares just as tragic as the other legends that shape this list:
Just outside of Columbus, Mississippi is Nash Road.
Legend has it if you stop on the road, turn off the headlights, and honk the horn one, two, three times, she will appear. She will knock on the roof of your car to alert you of her presence, and race your car to the end of the road. She will slam her body - 3 legs n’ all - against the car the entire time.
There are many alleged origins of the three-legged lady. Some believe she killed a lover, severed off the leg and attached it to her body, whilst others believe she is holding what’s left of her daughter’s corpse. Alternate versions of the legend even claim she is the spirit of a human sacrifice of a nearby satanic cult.
#5 - The Watcher
The first letter was sent in the summer of 2015.
A family had just moved into a grand mansion in Westfield when they started receiving letters from a person who claimed to be watching over the house. They were eerie, they were menacing, and they were signed by someone only known as ‘The Watcher’.
Numerous former owners have all received other letters from the same person with the same sentiment.
“Who has the bedrooms facing the street?”
“Do you need to fill the house with the young blood I requested?”
“Did 657 Boulevard call to you with its force within?”
The Watcher often refers to the house as if it is an entity, even warning one unsuspecting family not to destroy the house when they brought in contractors.
There are many more details to this story, but what I find most intriguing is a paragraph from a letter welcoming a new family:
“657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why are you here? I will find out.”
The stalking is still under investigation.
***
I’ve written about enough ghosts, ghouls, and long-forgotten legends for just over a year now to know what true fear is.
And real life is always scarier.
