UFC Fight Night - Song vs. Gutierrez - 12/9/2023

Song Yadong continues his rise through the Bantamweight rankings.

Prelims

Talita Alencar def. Rayanne dos Santos

Strawweights face off against each other, with the undefeated Talita Alencar winning a split decision against Rayanne dos Santos. Talita is known for being a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion and drawing with Stephanie Luciano in September on Dana White's Contender Series.

The fight was overall decent, with both women having their moments.

Tatsuro Taira def. Carlos Hernandez

After a disputed victory at UFC 290, Taira gained a TKO victory over Carlos Hernandez. I've been following Taira's career since I first heard he was on the Blachowicz vs. Rakić card in May of last year after a friend of mine looked through the undercard. Taira instantly grew on me, and I have been watching his career ever since.

Taira won 55 seconds in the 2nd round, after a dominant first round where he showed off some of his world class grappling. After the fight, he called out Muhammad Mokaev, who is scheduled to fight Alex Perez in March.

Luana Santos def. Stephanie Egger

This fight mostly consisted of clinching and strikes against the cage, but Santos ended up winning by Unanimous Decision.

Steve Garcia Melquizael Costa

Costa is a very interesting fighter to me. He was 1-1 going in to this fight, but his fights are fun to watch and he is a great fighter. He debuted in the UFC on the Brazil card in January.

The first round had Costa battling for back control, and Garcia doing his best to neutralize Costa's grappling with defense, which costed Garcia the round. However, in the second round, Garcia brutally knocked out Costa in an extremely bloody finish.

Park Hyun-sung Shannon Ross

The second Flyweight fight on this card ended up impressing me.

Park competed in the Road to UFC developmental series to sign the best talent in Asia, and won his UFC debut in February. Meanwhile, Ross has lost his DWCS appearance and his first 2 UFC appearances.

The first round was a competitive striking affair, with both men landing impressive shots and Park hurting Ross pretty badly, with the round ended on the ground. Park threatened submission after submission, taking the round.

The second round kicked off with Park hurting Ross pretty badly on the feet, to which Ross recovered to pretty well. However, Park was able to win via TKO. Really gutted for Shannon Ross, but this is an incredible victory for Hyun-sung.

Song Kenan Kevin Jousset

I really like seeing Song Kenan fight. I know Kenan for fighting Israel Adesanya earlier in his career and fighting Ian Garry at UFC 285. I do not know much of Kevin Jousset, but he won his UFC debut at UFC 293. More and more French prospects are being seen in the UFC, and I'm here for it.

For the first round, Jousset got the better of Kenan in the exchanges, which were mostly distance striking exchanges. Coming in to the second, Kenan wore more damage than Jousset and was able to put good pressure on Jousset, winning the second round on my scorecard. For the 3rd round, these guys gave it their all and fought to the very last. This fight delivered, with the victory going to Kevin Jousset.

Main Card

André Muniz def. Park Jun-yong

The Iron Turtle Jun-yong Park faces off against former #15 ranked contender André Muniz. Muniz won by a split decision victory. Very good back and forth, and Park had his moments. The only round that the judges came to a united conclusion on was the second round.

Tim Elliott def. Su Mudaerji

UFC Flyweight staple Tim Elliott won this fight via Submission in the first round. This was Su Mudaerji's first fight since his loss to Matt Schnell in a Fight of the Night on July of last year. Tim Elliott elevates his win streak to 2.

Nasrat Haqparast def. Jamie Mullarkey

These two fighters have spent a small amount of time in the UFC, and have already secured a main card spot. Nasrat knocked Jamie out in the first round.

Khalil Rountree Jr. def. Anthony Smith

Stepping in on short notice, former title challenger Anthony Smith takes on the aggressive and ruthless striker Khalil Rountree Jr. Khalil won the fight by knockout in vicious fashion in the 3rd round.

Song Yadong Chris Gutiérrez

Newcomer to the rankings, Chris Gutiérrez faces off with Song Yadong in the main event. 5 rounds of nonstop Bantamweight action. Song and Chris are both known for being exciting fighters to watch.

The first round was a showcase of how dominant Song can be when he's fresh in the fight, outpacing and outworking Chris. As the second round rolled around, he continued pressing Chris on the feet. Chris accidentally poked Song in the eye during this round and grabbed his glove during grappling later in the round.

At this point, Song is up two rounds on my scorecard. In rolls the third round, Song comes blazing in the first 30 seconds and slightly rocks Chris before poking him in the eye. The super high level and intense fights seem to have more fouls than lower level fights some times.

Literally swinging for the fences, Song pieced Chris up on the feet. Chris, on the other hand, had sneaky punches that seemed to have little effect on Song. Song scored a takedown in the final seconds, then they were sent back to their corners. Song has already won this fight if it goes to a decision.

The fourth round kicked off with a high pace, both men swinging at each other with full force. Song scores a takedown, and for a moment it seems like Chris was going for a triangle choke from bottom position, but Song quickly readjusted and continued to damage Chris from top position. Song succeeded in exhausting Chris and slowly wearing Chris down.

Some shots landed to the back of Chris' head, but referee Herb Dean decided to not step in and pause the action. Song is winning this fight, and Chris needs a finish.

As round five opens up, Chris makes a big mistake trying to take down Song, as he immediately ends up on bottom position gets controlled, essentially sabotaging himself and allowing Song to beat him 50-45.

This was not a competitive fight, and I'm curious as to why Chris would accept such a high ranked opponent at #15. Song continues to rack up impressive wins, adding Gutiérrez to a list alongside Ricky Simón, Chito Vera, and Marlon Moraes.

Final Rating

8/10

Watching this from beginning to end, I came out really satisfied. My favorite finishes were Nasrat Haqparast, Khalil Rountree, and Tatsuro Taira.

The prelims were solid for the most part, with a few fights being boring to me and not very fun to watch.

The main card was the best fight night main card I've seen live in a while, with the highlights being the co-main and main event.

I am really gutted for Song for not being able to perform in his home country of China. Dana White cited an emergency in China as the reason for the event's move back to Vegas.

Song Yadong vs Ricky Simón

Yadong Song (20-7-1) continues to just show up and put on bangers. He recovered from a bad loss to Cody Sandhagen by derailing a surging Ricky Simon in extremely violent, one sided fashion. Man is always a joy to watch.

He is set to headline again this Saturday (Dec. 9) as he will face off with Chris Gutierrez (20-4-2) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 233.

«Этот дивизион никогда не был успешным! Он не прижился даже с доминирующим чемпионом Деметриусом Джонсоном. Людям он был неинтересен. Я долгое время боролся за эту категорию и до сих пор пытаюсь сохранить его жизнеспособность», — ещё ни об одном бое чемпионов Дэна Уайт не говорил с такой грустью.

Оно и понятно: контракт с единственной звездой дивизиона расторгнут, а имена оставшихся бойцов ну никак не привлекают зрителя. И даже главная сенсация 2018 года, обладатель золотой олимпийской медали Пекина и новый чемпион «мухачей» Генри Сехудо не спасает положение – президент UFC срочно избавляется от проблемной категории. Одна из версий планов Уайта: некоторых бойцов с неплохими рекордами и перспективами попросят подняться в легчайший вес, а остальным укажут на дверь.

На роль киллера целой весовой наняли дважды подряд чемпиона Ти Джея Диллашоу, который не побрезговал грязной работенкой и теперь готов приложиться с правой как по Сехудо, так и по всему наилегчайшему весу:

«Все знают, как сильно я хочу этот пояс, как усердно я тружусь, какая у меня самоотдача, как я стремлюсь к тому, чтобы стать лучше. Никто не пашет тяжелее и умнее, чем я, и мне не терпится доказать это. И есть вероятность, что потом я поднимусь в полулёгкий вес, завоюю титул там и войду в историю как «завоеватель поясов».

В UFC заплатили мне грёбаную кучу бабок, чтобы я убил наилегчайший дивизион и взял ещё один пояс. Это двойная победа для меня — игра начинается!»

Побить Макса Холлоуэя – неплохой план на будущее, но пока надо преодолеть рубеж в Бруклине. Первая и, на данный момент, главная задача – самоуверенному Ти Джею надо сделать вес. Шутка ли, и без того жилистому Диллашоу предстоит уложиться в 57 кг.

Вторая — восстановиться после нелегкой сгонки лишних килограмм. По последним фотографиям видно, как американцу тяжело дается весогонка, в отличие от соперника, который принимает врага на своей территории. Ну и, наконец, последний этап – противостояние одному из лучших грэпплеров UFC. Спору нет, борьба Ти Джея хороша. Но можно ли её сравнивать с уровнем чемпиона Олимпийских игр по вольной борьбе?

Что же касается Генри, то улыбка в преддверии супербоя не покидает его лица. Сехудо не меньше Диллашоу верит в свой успех и, примерив на себя образ Супермена, поставил перед собой крайне благородную цель:

«Бой с Диллашоу – это не только мой бой. Я буду драться за всех маленьких бойцов. За всех, у кого есть семьи и дети. За всех, кто ещё надеется однажды стать чемпионом. Я буду драться за всех парней из наилегчайшего веса, за все их семьи, за всех детей. Я пытаюсь оставить людям работу.

Считаю, UFC отправляет Диллашоу, чтобы убить дивизион. Они отправляют киллера, чтобы он убрал меня. Лучшего сюжета и придумать нельзя!»

В случае победы Диллашоу станет четвёртым в истории UFC единовременным чемпионом в двух весовых категориях. До него такая высота покорялась только Конору Макгрегору, Даниэлю Кормье и Аманде Нуньес.

Но если сильнее окажется Сехудо, то нас будет ждать интереснейшая развязка ситуации вокруг наилегчайшего дивизиона, чемпион которого надеется на лучший исход:

«Я воскрешу наилегчайший дивизион. Буду смотреть в глаза Диллашоу и дам понять, с кем он связался. У него будет не обычный бой – против него будет весь дивизион. Мы сделаем наш вес великим снова!»

«Ковбой» продолжает цементировать наследие

Александер Эрнандес — Дональд Серроне. Бой в лёгком весе

В предварительном карде в клетку вернётся ветеран ММА Дональд Серроне. Одержав в ноябре победу над Майком Перри болевым приёмом уже в первом раунде, Ковбой вышел на безоговорочное первое место по количеству успешных боёв в истории промоушена. Ближайшие, ныне выступающие преследователи далеко, а второе место (по 20 побед) за Жоржем Сен-Пьером и Майклом Биспингом, которые пока не планируют возвращаться в клетку. А Серроне продолжает творить историю дальше:

«Мое наследие — это то, каким меня запомнят люди. Хочу, чтобы фанаты запомнили меня как бойца, про которого они говорили: «Охренеть, Ковбой дерется, мы обязаны посмотреть его бой». Дебют в UFC для экс-игрока NFL Грега Харди потрясает воображение: тяжеловес с рекордом 3-0 (уровень побеждённых бойцов, к слову, не впечатляет) не просто выступит на историческом турнире — его поединок станет ко-мейн ивентом.

Стоит отметить, что ранее возможный поединок спортсмена в одном турнире с избитой мужем Рейчел Остович спровоцировал большой общественный резонанс. Причина подобной реакции очевидна: 15 июля 2014 года Харди был признан виновным в нападении на бывшую подругу и приговорён к 18 месяцам условно, а также отстранён от участия в NFL на 10 игр. Kevin Lee defeats Edson Barboza via 5th-round TKO, continues to call out Khabib Nurmagomedov

The UFC’s lightweight division was already crowded at the top going into this weekend. Well, add another name to the mix.

Former interim title challenger Kevin Lee (17-3) turned in one of the best performances of his career Saturday, defeating Edson Barboza via TKO at 2:18 of the fifth round. Cageside physicians stopped the bout, which headlined UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City, due to a cut over Barboza’s right eye.

That cut was only a small sample of the damage Lee caused, as he racked up 233 total strikes, according to Fightmetric. Barboza landed just 64.

“I feel I’m the most complete fighter in this division,” said Kevin Lee after defeating Edson Barboza — whom he called “100 percent the best striker in this division” — via fifth-round TKO. Asked who he wants next, Lee replied, “It’s Khabib time, baby.” Noah K. Murray/USA TODAY Sports

A former collegiate wrestler, Lee dominated Barboza (19-6) on the floor but looked comfortable on the feet as well. The only hiccup came in the third round, when Barboza stunned Lee with a spinning wheel-kick to the side of the head. Lee was rocked by the shot, but managed to take Barboza down moments later.

“I said it before this fight, mental strength would win it,” Lee said. “I wanted to go all five rounds and show my compete game. I can do it all. I feel I’m the most complete fighter in this division. I can stand with the best striker in the world. Edson Barboza is 100 percent the best striker in this division.”

Lee, who fights out of Las Vegas, had been calling out UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov during fight week, and that didn’t stop on Saturday.

Just seven weeks after suffering the first knockout loss of his career, Frankie Edgar bounced back with a key unanimous decision win over Cub Swanson.

“Folks know what time it is,” said Lee, when asked what he wants next. “It’s Khabib time, baby.”

Barboza, who fights out of New Jersey, has now dropped two in a row in absolutely devastating fashion. He endured a brutal, 15-minute loss to Nurmagomedov in December. The Brazilian veteran was badly outwrestled in that matchup, as well.

Despite the lopsidedness of the bout, Barboza never showed any quit. The spinning kick in the third round nearly turned things around. He also landed a hard knee on Lee as he shot for a takedown in the fourth, but Lee pushed through it.

It would have been a perfect week for Lee, had he not missed weight by one pound during Friday’s official weigh-in. Lee has openly talked about how difficult his weight cut is to 155 pounds, but had expressed optimism going into fight week.

The 26-year-old is 10-3 inside the Octagon. His only losses have come to Al Iaquinta, Leonardo Santos and Tony Ferguson.
