may-early june 2022

may is finally over and my beloved june has begun to settle in. i haven't been listening to much of anything new, mostly new (to me) versions of old songs by musicians i've always loved. june doesn't need to have anything new, its sacredness lies in what already was. it rained on wednesday afternoon, i returned to my afternoon storms playlist, something i try to only listen to once in a while, as to avoid wearing out its weight. i made that playlist in september of 2018, a few days before i adopted jenny, sitting alone in my new room on woodrow street. how has it been so long? i listened to comin' through by the war on drugs on repeat for an hour, played along to no secrets by jim james with some added delay on my nord.

here's a quick roundup of what i've been listening to, what i've gotten tired of (not much), and what i look forward to bringing with me through the rest of june.

the familiars: wilco, phish, and of course john mayer. am i a suburban dad? or just someone who grew up at jewish sleepaway camp? i'll never know. wilco came back to me at the end of april when i was drawn to the 2020 reissue of summerteeth while laying in the grass at forsyth on my lunch break, another summer, a traveler's guide. phish has been huge for me lately. got hot sauce on my vintage tshirt, it's mostly gone, but still visible if you look closely. i've been mostly listening to '93-'98 shows, solidly sunk in the rift era (as always?). very much into maze from st. louis in '93, very fitting for the last weekend of may. my cousin's friend gave me $1,000,000 bill with jerry on it after we talked the upcoming summer tour. another killer show i've had on is 8.2.97 at the gorge. killer dogs stole things and wading.

enough of that, onto john mayer: still listening to the 4.9.22 atl show, especially rosie>>wild blue>>if i ever get around to living. i couldn't have asked for a better (reasonable) sequence. born and raised turned 10 on may 22, i'll never forget that day in 2012, i'm ready to live in parallel with it again. listened to the hotel cafe videos from 2011 the night after, and i've been stuck on if i ever get around to living from letterman in 2013. finally got the download link to the 7.7.2004 red rocks set, and it's more than i could have ever imagined. wheel is surreal. if anyone happens to be reading this and wants the link, shoot me a message.

destroyer: always there to release something delicious. june is perfect, truly perfect. will probably be in my top ten this year. blue flower / blue flame came from a previous playlist, can't remember which one. maybe august 2021, i remember i felt a pinch of nostalgia for my time at buddy brew and the public library a few weeks ago, so that's probably it. will you just look at the time, it's standing still!

the standouts:

another weyes blood feature to ease me into the change in pace of the upcoming months. i've listened to oh how we drift by tim heidecker and weyes blood away a ton, playing it on my keyboard a ton, humming it to myself at work while pushing the ladder in the stacks. she'll only be an early summer artist to me, it won't fit at any other time.

not sure how to write about familiar place by girls of the internet, except to say that it jumped into my all time favorites playlist on the second listen. this album is gold. reminds me of nordstrom bistro at dusk on a weeknight in june, maybe that’s where i’ll reside forever, maybe i’m already there and always have been. i can’t seem to get away. this feeling has never evaded me, it always feels as strong as it did the first time. i think my current consciousness formed the summer of 2008, that’s really when i started to remember things. when things started to become clear. I can map the years from there on out, almost with ease. that’s when i first remember the parking lot feeling this way. it felt timeless, like i could experience time all at once and not at all. i existed outside of it and within it completely.

the sweet prelude to summer, the ever present feeling of the intersection of swann and macdill, macdill and bay to bay: strange conversations by automatic, a song i added to my music i would have liked in high school, a playlist i'm curating for her to listen one day. emily by drug cabin also falls into this, a nice complement to lazy humid summer late afternoon indie pop, another playlist stacked with songs i would have loved in high school.

here's the whole playlist. can't really see myself revisiting this one a lot, but it will be nice to listen to in december, to hear it in context.
