Top 5 Women Philanthropists of India
Tumblr media
Giving to charities has a long history in India. While there are wonderful examples of institution-building support, especially in the early years of independent India, traditional Indian philanthropy has mainly focused on supporting and enabling the delivery of essential services and creating livelihood opportunities, particularly in the areas of health care and education for the needy and in remote areas.
In response to the unpredictable challenges imposed by the pandemic, civil society organisations joined forces with governments to ensure the last-mile delivery of a number of government services and goods. This attempt was widely appreciated by both top government officials and society at large.
From Rs 2,318 crore in FY18 to Rs 5,666 crore in FY22, overall donations have increased by a factor of two. This shows that people in India have given more to charity in the last four years from FY18 to FY22 and it has been only progressive since then. The world is celebrating women’s history month in March 2023. With India having a long history in giving to charity, let’s look at the top women philanthropists in India in 2022.
Tumblr media
1. Rohini Nilekani
Rohini Nilekani has worked as a journalist, author, and social activist. Rohini Nilekani, the chairwoman of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and the wife of Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, has been engaged in active citizenship for over 30 years. Most of her donations were made in the fields of ecology, sanitation, and education, but her good works have covered a variety of topics. Rohini has secured assistance for initiatives over India through Arghyam, a nonprofit she set up in 2001 for sustainable water and sanitation.
Tumblr media
2. Leena Gandhi Tewari
Leena Gandhi Tewari of the pharmaceutical enterprise USV, one of the wealthiest women in India, rose to the rank of second-most giving Indian lady after contributing an amount of 21 crores. Last year, the USV chairperson gave 23 crores to a charity. She created the Dr Susheela Gandhi Centre for Social Development to aid the destitute women of Vakola, Maharashtra. The centre supports multiple education and learning of the town’s women and girls. Girls are led through student learning, dance classes, and computer classes at the facility.
Tumblr media
3. Anu Aga & Family
The former chairwoman of Thermax Ltd., Anu Aga was ranked as the seventh richest Indian woman. She is the third most generous woman in India, having given approximately 20 crore rupees to charity foundations. Anu, the current chairperson of Teach For India, is renowned for committing a lot of time to the causes she endorses. Along with the Akanksha Foundation, the Thermax Social Initiative Foundation (TSIF) manages nine primary government schools in Pune and Mumbai. Anu also provides money to causes like Teach For India and Give India that foster education. In acknowledgement of her work in the social sector, she received Padma Shri in 2010.
Tumblr media
4. Manju Gupta
Manju D. Gupta is the chairwoman of the large pharma company Lupin Pharma. Her children Vineta and Nilesh are presently in charge of the $ 2 billion business. In 2022, she gave a contribution of 16 crores more toward the advancement and growth of the nation’s rural areas. In 2020, she was classified as India’s fifth-richest lady.
Tumblr media
5. Renu Munjal

She is also fully engaged in initiatives related to women’s empowerment. In FY22, Renu Munjal and her family contributed Rs 10 crore for disaster relief.
The Bottom Line…
Philanthropy is a way that can help society get rid of all the challenges like poverty, impoverishment, unemployment, lack of education and others. While these women are on top of the philanthropy list, you can start small and one step at a time. Filaantro is a crowdfunding platform that raises funds for every genuine cause that one believes in. We fundraise for a cause, the cause that is close to your heart and has all your hard work, just like these women to be at the top of the philanthropy list. American Women Entrepreneurs
In the United States, the number of women entrepreneurs is increasing. In reality, since 1997, the number of women-run companies has climbed by 5%.
The inspiring life narrative of J.K. Rowling demonstrates that everyone can succeed. She has become a global humanitarian in addition to a celebrity and wealth: an English author and director, J.K. Rowling. More than 450 million copies of her book Harry Potter have been sold globally. It has surpassed all other film series in terms of box office success. But it wasn't an easy road to this triumph.
Rowling faced several difficulties on the road. Oxford turned her down after completing her studies at the University of Exeter. Rowling came up with the concept for the first book in the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone series while waiting for a train in 1990.
She was a poor single mother reliant on social handouts at the time. In Portugal, Rowling first met her husband, Jorge Arantes. But after only eleven months, they broke up. Their split caused JK a lot of distress. She eventually filed for divorce a few years later. She had a young daughter at the time. This hampered her ability to balance her profession and family.
Indian industrialist Sminu Jindal is a first-time participant. She has a history of making her company an industry leader and has shattered the glass barrier in several industries, including the oil and gas sector. She received an award for excellence as the top female entrepreneur in India from the esteemed Institute of Marketing and Management, New Delhi, as a testament to her business acumen.
She has led the initiative in establishing Svayam, a nonprofit organization, in addition to her position at Jindal. This effort attempts to improve accessibility for those with limited mobility to public infrastructure. It is specifically intended to help people with impairments so they can participate in society.
She was one of the 16 keynote presenters at the EO Global Leadership Conference and chaired the Assocham National Council on Iron and Steel. At the conference, Jindal discussed her organization's progress in solving the accessibility issue and urged everyone to grab the reins and contribute to the drive to create a more inclusive world.
American neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor is also a well-known public speaker, best-selling author, and member of the TED Speakers Bureau. She is also an active supporter of neurological healing and a philanthropist.
A Brain Scientist's Journey was published in 2006. An autobiographical account of her eight-year rehabilitation from a stroke, the book is written by the author. The New York Times named it a "Best Book, " a best seller that went 63 weeks on the bestseller list.
Her other achievements include speaking at the TED Conference in February 2008 and giving a TED lecture that same year. The TED conference and the TED lecture attracted much media attention and were heavily trafficked online. Millions of people attended the TED Conference, and over 27 million individuals watched the TED speech. An 18-minute video by brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor on her experience with a significant stroke was the most-watched talk at the TED conference.
Employment law is a specialty of Jennifer Duggan's. She has represented and defended employers in employment litigation for almost 20 years. She has assisted her clients in resolving PAGA claims, wage and hour class actions, and discrimination claims. Her firm has also effectively protected people from employment litigation based on torts and retaliation.
The firm's practice areas are centered on reducing lawsuit risk and addressing personnel issues early on. Duggan's team works closely with their clients to ensure they are protected against the dangers of employment disputes using their considerable understanding of business and employment law. They have successfully represented employers in employment cases by applying their in-depth legal knowledge and obtained several advantageous settlements for their clients.
Duggan advises various groups in addition to her focus on employment law. Her main goal is to assist women in improving their quality of life and achieving professional success. She founded the PALM BEACH Woman magazine and is also active in several other projects.

Top 10 Celebrities And The Social Causes They Support
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bollywood celebrities are larger than the real-life we, common people, inhabit. Some are worshiped like God, while some hold the power to manipulate and control trends, be it in terms of fashion or the movie industry itself. Following the example of, “With great power comes great responsibility”, there are many Bollywood celebrities who have used their platform of popularity responsibly.
This article will list out ten such socially responsible Bollywood celebrities who have successfully aided charitable causes and won thousands of hearts among the audience by doing so.
1. Shabana Azmi
azmishabana18 / Instagram
Known for her out-of-the-box roles in earlier Bollywood, Shabana Azmi, was one of the few pioneers who started a dialogue about women’s plight in a patriarchal society. Off-screen, she has always been vocal about social issues related to the rights of women, minorities and poor people, both as an active social worker as well as a member of the parliament.
Shabana Azmi has also actively participated in the AIDS campaign. Currently, this inspirational woman runs an NGO called “Mijwan Welfare Society” in Azamgarh district, UP. The NGO empowers under-privileged children by promoting education and life skills through their sponsored school, college, computer center, and sewing center.
2. Aamir Khan
_aamirkhan / Instagram
This actor dropped out of mainstream cinemas to act in movies that send a social message to the mass audience accessible by Bollywood. Movies such as Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, and 3 Idiots are but a few among them. We all know the stir he caused with his show Satyamev Jayate, which probed and discussed the much tabooed social issues of the current Indian society.
In addition to that, the “perfectionist” voiced his support for several campaigns and protests such as Jan Lok Pal Bill, Narmada Bachao Andolan, and unfair treatment of the LGBTQ community.
3. Shah Rukh Khan
iamsrk / Instagram
Few people know about King Khan’s role as a member of the board of directors at the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In addition to making frequent donations to numerous charity organizations, like 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake victims or the National Center for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, the actor is also responsible for creating a children’s ward at Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai.
4. Dia Mirza
diamirzaofficial / Instagram
Dia Mirza has been actively involved with charitable organizations such as PETA, CRY, Cancer Patients Aid Association and Spastics Society of India. Recognized for her contributions, the actor was appointed by the UN as Goodwill Ambassador for Environment for India. The actor has also adopted two adorable cheetah cubs in a Lucknow zoo.
5. Salman Khan
beingsalmankhan / Instagram
Bollywood’s bhaijaan is a silent philanthropist; rarely taking credit for his benevolence. His “Being Human” foundation provides education and healthcare services for the underprivileged citizens of the country. With the help of his foundation, the actor organized an eye camp in Sri Lanka, where five eye surgeons were flown in along with aftercare medication, eye lenses and technical equipment required for the operation.
In addition to that, the actor keeps making impromptu charitable gestures that leave both his followers and critics in awe. For instance, the actor auctioned gym sessions featuring him during the Joy Of Giving Week, where the highest bid on eBay was registered for 3.5 lakhs.
6. Nandita Das
nanditadasofficial / Instagram
In an interview, Nandita Das explained her socially relevant movie choices. “…my choices of films are influenced by my social work days because a certain social consciousness automatically comes in and you don’t want to do a film just for the sake of doing a film.”
Movies like Fire, Earth and Before the Rains are few such instances of beautiful storytelling.
Nandita Das, as a social activist, focuses on issues that concern the marginalized section of the society. The actor is also quite vocal about her stance against the society’s obsession with fairer skin and, therefore, was the face of the campaign “Dark is Beautiful”.
7. Amitabh Bachchan
amitabhbachchan / Instagram
Appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for Polio Eradication by UNICEF, Amitabh Bachchan was made the face of the polio campaign in 2002. We all remember Big B’s ad of “Do Boond Zindagi Ke”; a message that was instrumental in rooting out polio from this country. The actor was also a vocal supporter of the “Save Our Tigers” campaign that spoke out for the preservation of the endangered species.
Moreover, the actor, suffering from Hepatitis-B, is committed to the cause and has been appointed the Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis.
8. Deepika Padukone
deepikapadukone / Instagram
Deepika broke the stereotype of “All is Well” in the glittering Bollywood world by coming out and talking about her struggles with depression. It was very brave of the actor to publicly acknowledge her issues regarding mental health.
Soon after, the actor launched an NGO, “The Live, Love, Laugh Foundation” aiming to help people suffering from depression and spread awareness about mental health.
9. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
aishwaryaraibachchan_arb / Instagram
Aishwarya Rai’s blue eyes have been known to inspire many songs in the Indian movie industry, not to mention, sighs from her ardent followers. The beautiful actor pledged her eyes to the Eye Bank Association of India, urging other people to also do so in the ad. Furthermore, she launched a foundation named “Aishwarya Rai Foundation” that aims to support and help underprivileged people of the country.
10. Rahul Bose
rahulbose7 / Instagram
The actor was actively involved in the rescue efforts when Andaman and Nicobar Island was hit by a tsunami in 2004. Later, he launched the Andaman and Nicobar Scholarship Initiative that was dedicated to the education of the underprivileged children on the islands.
Additionally, Rahul Bose is associated with numerous charity organizations such as Breakthrough, Citizens for Justice and Peace, Spastic Society in India, Akshara Centre and Teach for India.
All these talented actors have used their privilege for a good cause. They have been a true inspiration to common people like us. We don’t have to go out of the way to help someone. Remember, charity begins at home. So start your journey of giving with baby steps and see where that leads you.
Let us know about your most recent charitable act in the comments below.

NDA Govt’s Top 10 Welfare Schemes
This article could have had the scope of speculating whether the success of the NDA govt. schemes would lead to its victory in the much-awaited 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, if only this article was written earlier in time. Now, the air is clear, the parliamentary election in world’s largest democracy has ended and the people have given their verdict in favour of the Modi-led NDA, yet again. There will always be naysayers, but believe it or not, the Indian PM has one of the largest followings, ever. It’s not just his attitude, style, personality, or oratory skills that has garnered him so much love, fandom, believers, followers, and yay-sayers, its also the policies and schemes being brought around during his leadership and tenure at the prestigious office, that has reaped him so many praises. As we are stepping into whats being called as the second era of Narendra Modi Government, or simply “Modi 2.0”, lets have a brief look at the top 10 welfare schemes of the Government of the day.
  1. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY)
Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) is a scheme launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on April 8, 2015 for providing loans upto 10 lakh to the non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises. These loans are classified as MUDRA loans under PMMY. These loans are given by Commercial Banks, RRBs, Small Finance Banks, Cooperative Banks, MFIs and NBFCs. The borrower can approach any of the lending institutions mentioned above or can apply online through this portal. Under the aegis of PMMY, MUDRA has created three products namely ‘Shishu’, ‘Kishore’ and ‘Tarun’ to signify the stage of growth / development and funding needs of the beneficiary micro unit / entrepreneur and also provide a reference point for the next phase of graduation / growth.
  2. Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM)
Cleanliness is next to Godliness. The Prime Minister launched his pet project for a clean India on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary October 2, 2014. The PM roped in prominent personalities from the film industry, sports, media, business and other celebrities to promote the initiative. [2] there is also a swacchta sarvekshan been conducted time to time to adjudge the cleanest cities positions rank-wise; Indore in Madhya Pradesh has topped the list the third time as well.
PM Modi’s flagship sanitation campaign in India that aims to build toilets and clean up streets, roads and infrastructure of India’s cities, towns and rural areas. In urban areas, over 46 lakh individual toilets have been constructed out of nearly 94 lakh application received for toilet construction. Total community and public toilets stood at 3.1 lakh and the number of open defecation free (ODF) cities clocked at 2,212 as of May 24, 2018. In the rural areas, over 7.2 crore toilets have been constructed across all villages in India compared to 9.5 crore households that do not have toilets. More than 60 percent of the rural households in all sates are reported to have toilets except Odisha (55 percent) and Bihar (55.1 percent). Out of the 3.6 lakh villages which self-declared open defecation free (ODF), 2.5 lakh declarations have been verified. [3]
In October 2014, Bill Gates had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on building more toilets in the country. “Narendra Modi has India talking about toilets and that’s a great thing,” Gates said in a tweet which was retweeted by Modi. On his blog, Gates said, “This is not the kind of issue that most politicians like to talk about. But I would guess that in the short time he has been in office, Prime Minister Modi has done more to raise the awareness of the need for toilets than any other leader since the country gained independence“. [4]
  3. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is the flagship scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) implemented by National Skill Development Corporation. The objective of this Skill Certification Scheme is to enable a large number of Indian youth to take up industry-relevant skill training that will help them in securing a better livelihood. Individuals with prior learning experience or skills will also be assessed and certified under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
  4.Beti Bachao – Beti Padhao
“When you educate a man, you educate a man but when you educate a woman, you educate a generation”.  With an objective to generate awareness and to improve the welfare services provided to women, on January 25, 2015, Modi launched the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign. The focus was laid on 100 selected districts that are low in Child Sex Ratio (CSR) for safeguarding the survival and education of a girl child.  Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, on 22nd January, 2015 in Panipat, Haryana as one of the flagship programmes of the Government, to address the declining Child Sex Ratio and related issues of empowerment of women on a life-cycle continuum. It is a tri-ministerial, convergent effort of Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health & Family Welfare and Human Resource Development with a focus on awareness and advocacy campaign for changing mindsets, multi-sectoral action in select 161 districts (low on CSR), enabling girls’ education and effective enforcement of Pre-Conception & Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) Act. The Scheme has been received well and has been successful in establishing the improvement in Child Sex Ratio as a National Agenda. It has resulted in increased awareness, sensitization and conscious building around the issue of declining CSR in the public domain. [7]
  5.Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)
The Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a financial inclusion programme that makes services like banking, remittance and insurance available to every Indian at affordable cost. Beneficiaries can open a zero-balance account. As of August 16, 2017, 295 million new bank accounts had been opened under the PMJDY. More than 176 million of these accounts are in rural India, and around 145 million are operated by women. [8]
PM Modi’s flagship financial inclusion scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana, aims to ensure access to financial services such as banking, savings and deposit accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, pension in an affordable manner. Launched in august 2014, the objective of this scheme was to connect more and more number of people to banking services. Under this scheme, 31.60 crore people across India opened a Jan-Dhan account as of May 9, 2018. By far, the PMJDY has emerged as one of the world’s largest financial inclusion programmes. Special benefits under PMJDY Scheme include accidental insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh, no minimum balance requirement and a life cover of Rs 30,000 payable on death of the beneficiary. The PMJDY has emerged as one of the world’s largest financial inclusion programmes. [9]
6.Prime Minister Ujjwala Plan/ Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
Launched on May 1, 2016, its aim was to provide the LPG connection to BPL families at subsidized rates. Under the PM Ujjwala Yojana, the government aims to provide LPG connections to below poverty line (BPL) households in the country to replace unclean cooking fuels used in rural India with the clean and more efficient LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). Earlier this year, the Centre had revised its target to provide LPG connections to eight crore from five crore. Nearly four crore (3,98,77,723) connections have been given under the scheme so far, about 80 lakh of them in the past five months. [10]
    7. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)
The idea of electrifying every village in India was conveyed by PM Modi in his August 15 speech in 2015 where he promised electrification all un-electrified villages within 1,000 days. As per government records, by April 1, 2015, India had about 18,452 unelectrified villages. The task to electrify the remaining villages was completed in 988 days as on April 28, 2018 as electricity reached Manipur’s Leisang village after over 70 years of Independence under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY). The Prime Minister, however, launched a Rs 16,320-crore Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, or Saubhagya scheme to provide electricity connections to over 40 million families in rural and urban areas by December 2018. Out of the set target to provide electricity connection to 3,80,23,012 households, the government has so provided electricity connection to 61,89,812 houses as on May 25, 2018. [11]
Aimed at providing round the clock power to rural households and adequate power to agricultural consumers, the DDUGJY involved feeder separation, strengthening of sub-transmission and the distribution network, metering at all levels, village electrification, and setting up micro-grid and off-grid distribution networks. [12]
    8. Ayushman Bharat
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana is also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) or National Health Protection Scheme or Modicare. Ayushman Bharat aims to provide healthcare facilities to over 10 crore families covering urban and rural poor. PMJAY-Ayushman Bharat is the biggest government-sponsored healthcare scheme in the world. The scheme offers an insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh, which will cover almost 50 crore citizens. [13]
Its no longer the case that there is an absence of healthcare facilities for the poor in the country. As Modi always states “Govt. schemes and policies are for the poor of the country.” The sole motto of this scheme is to covering both preventive and pro-motive health, to address healthcare holistically. [14]
Ayushman Bharat is Narendra Modi government’s flagship healthcare scheme that aims to provide medical coverage to over 10 crore poor families. The Narendra Modi government has received appreciation from the billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates on the first 100 days of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Gates also congratulated the government for providing healthcare benefits to 6.85 lakh people in such a short span of time. In his tweet, Gates wrote, “Congratulations to the Indian government on the first 100 days of @AyushmanNHA. It’s great to see how many people have been reached by the program so far. @PMOIndia” [15]
    9. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is an initiative by the government of India in which 120 million small and marginal farmers who have less than 2 hectares (4.9 acres) of landholding will get up to ₹6,000 (US$87) per year as minimum income support. The initiative was announced by Piyush Goyal during the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India on 1 February 2019. The PM-KISAN scheme aims to supplement the financial needs of the SMFs in procuring various inputs to ensure proper crop health and appropriate yields, commensurate with the anticipated farm income at the end of the each crop cycle.
      10. Khelo India
Aim was to promote sports in youth. Thus the proposal of Khelo India was something of a fresh breath in the stale air that had settled around Olympic sports in India. To the apparent eye, the success of the Khelo India School Games has been immense with a viewership of over 100 million and participation of over 3000 young athletes.
Until the inaugural KISG took place in January, there was almost no specific scouting of talented athletes in India but for the SAI National Sports Talent Contest. The appointment of a sports icon and India’s first ever Individual Silver medallist brought with it a promise of setting things rolling in the right direction.
The objective of the KISG was to help India’s youth develop into a contender in international sporting events by helping them with funds, coaching, top-notch infrastructure, raising awareness regarding the importance of physical fitness, encouraging the development of women’s sport and so on. The Games were spread over 16 disciplines which are Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Shooting, Swimming, Volleyball, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.
The sports budget received a considerably large hike in the 2018 budget, a total of Rs 1943 crore. The initial money that was alloted for Khelo India was Rs. 140 crores. But after the latest developments, the budget has been increased to Rs 350 crores. These have been some shortcomings of the Khelo India School Games that are a shade difficult to ignore. However, there is no denying that this was still a step forward, irrespective of big or small. [17]

The Chronicle of Philanthropy publishes an annual round up of the top 50 philanthropists by calculating their yearly donations. In 2017, America's super rich and famous donated $14.7 billion to causes, alma maters, foundations, and charities. Bill and Melinda Gates top the list.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy publishes an annual list of the top 50 philanthropists (both individuals and couples) by calculating their yearly donations.
In 2017, America's wealthiest residents donated $14.7 billion to nonprofit organizations.
About 60% of the total was donated by people who made their fortunes in tech, suggesting America's philanthropic center is shifting away from Wall Street and towards Silicon Valley, according to The Chronicle.
America's wealthiest people donated $14.7 billion in 2017 to causes, alma maters, foundations, and charities — more than doubling the amount given away in 2016.
For 18 years, The Chronicle of Philanthropy has published an annual round up of the top-50 philanthropists in America by calculating their yearly donations. In 2017, the individuals and couples on the list donated a median of $97 million, doubling the giving amount from the first list published in 2000. The total donation amount of the 2017 list is the highest amount since the 2008 recession, according to Forbes.
The 2017 list features 11 individuals or couples from the technology industry accounting for $8.7 billion in donations, or about 60% of the total, suggesting America's philanthropic center is shifting away from Wall Street and towards Silicon Valley, according to The Chronicle.
The top three donors who gave away at least $1 billion each are tech moguls: Michael and Susan Dell, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, and Bill and Melinda Gates.
Notably missing from the list is billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who made a multibillion-dollar donation in Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2017. But because the "annual installment" was part of Buffett's initial 2006 pledge to donate more than $36 billion in Berkshire Hathaway shares to the Gates' organization, the Chronicle did not count it as a 2017 donation.
Below are the top 25 philanthropists who donated more than $97 million each in 2017. Note that four people passed away after the ranking was first published in February — Porter Byrum, David Rockefeller, Florence Irving, and Henry Hillman.

Lessons you can learn from the world’s most successful people
The one question young people often ask is what can they learn from the world’s most successful people? And the answer is on the Internet. Every strategic move they have ever taken, every decision they have made has been recorded for all eternity. It is for you to analyze, study patterns, and find out which moves thrust them into fame and which cost them millions of dollars.
However, from every successful industry veteran, there is something different to be learned. And with the iPhone X launch, a lot of us are going through the nostalgia of the early iPhones and the phenomenon created by Steve Jobs. So, today we present to you all the lessons you can learn from the very public careers of Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos, and numerous others!
1. Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs taught us that you need to have a customer-centric approach to solving problems. And nothing is more important than good aesthetics.
Steve Jobs, despite being a very controversial figure in the tech industry, is credited with being a true visionary. In 1997, when he was made the CEO of Apple, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy and Steve Jobs revived it.
At Apple, Jobs was the driving force behind the development of tech products that would have a strong influence on pop culture. Moreover, he was a problem solver and had a customer-centric approach to innovation. He was the first one to introduce a full touch screen on a smartphone. In fact, when the iPhone was created he had asked his team to work on a virtual keyboard for a tablet device. When the design team came up with a prototype, he liked it so much that they ended up developing the iPhone – a product which completely the public’s perspective on what it meant to have a mobile.
2. Jack Ma
Jack is the perfect example that you do not need to be in Silicon Valley in order to think big and be successful.
In his youth, he applied for 30 different jobs but got rejected from every single one. His application from Harvard got rejected 10 times. But that hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of the world’s biggest business magnates. In 1999, Jack launched the Alibaba Group, a body of Internet-based businesses including the e-commerce store Alibaba.com and hasn’t looked back since. Alibaba employs over 50,000 people and is currently the sixth biggest company in the world in terms of revenue.
3. Amancio Ortega
Amancio Ortega’s multi-billion dollar clothing empire teaches us to select a market segment that will always be in high demand.
You probably don’t know who Amancio Ortega is but he is the man who has dethroned Bill Gates thrice from the top spot of the richest person in the world. Even though Ortega is not at all well-known, he has quietly built a clothing empire by the name of Zara which is a subsidiary of his retailing brand Inditex.
From Ortega’s success, you can learn that it is very important to identify your customers and give them exactly what they want. The brand has been very successful and is now valued at $100 billion. Ortega collects $400 million in dividends from Inditex every year and more than 80% of his fortune comes from his shares in the company. Over the years, as the Inditex stocks have risen so has his net worth.
4. J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling can best teach you to never give up on your dreams if you have hit rock bottom.
She came from extreme poverty to become one of the world’s most read authors. She was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series in 1990. In the following seven years she had to go through a lot of personal trauma, her mother died, she got divorced, raised her daughter as a single mother, all while living in poverty.
But she did not give up on her idea and even though several publishers rejected her books initially, Bloomsbury finally picked it up and pushed it into international fame. J.K. Rowling has had a true rags to riches story and is the first person to become a billionaire just by writing books. However, she has given most of her money to charity and now has a net worth of $650 million.
5. Sundar Pichai
From Pichai’s remarkable career, you can learn that you don’t always need to be in the Founder’s seat to become an impactful figure.
Sundar Pichai made waves when he was selected as the CEO of Google when Sergey Brin and Larry Page stepped down. He has a truly inspirational story. After getting his basic education from India, Pichai moved to the US for higher education and a better career. Before joining Google he worked at McKinsey & Co and after joining Google in 2004 he led the product management and innovation efforts. Before being selected as the CEO of Google, he was dedicated to his job as Product Chief at Google and used to lead the Google IO event.
6. Bill Gates
No one can teach us better than Bill Gates that the people don’t know what they want until you show them.
Everyone knows Bill Gates as the richest person in the world but he did not amass all that wealth without hardwork. During his 15 prime years of work, he would work 100 hours a week. As the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, Gates is largely credited with changing the way people interact with computers by introducing the very user-friendly Windows Operating System. Over a billion people in the world use various versions of Windows on their PC. But this wasn’t it. As the CEO and Chief Software Architect of Microsoft, before retirement, Bill Gates as a true visionary directed the company towards the cloud computing domain. And right now their cloud platform called Microsoft Azure is being out Amazon Web Services by a huge margin.
7. Indra Nooyi
Indra Nooyi is the perfect example that you don’t need to be a man in order to be a successful CEO.
She joined PepsiCo in 1994 and was promoted to CFO status just 7 years later. Throughout her years there, she has been the force behind massive restructuring at the company. She also took the lead in the acquisition of Tropicana in 1998 and the merger with Quaker Oats Company. In 2006 she became the fifth CEO in Pepsi Co’s 44-year history and still maintains that position. Forbes named her one of the 100 most powerful women in the world in 2014 and Fortune labeled her as the 2nd most powerful woman last year.
8. Mark Zuckerberg
From Zuckerberg’s role at Facebook, you can best learn that if you can’t beat your competition, acquire it.
Mark Zuckerberg’s story of how he launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm has become a tech legend at this point. But over the years, Facebook has seen a brilliant transformation and so has Mark Zuckerberg. He has evolved from a geeky coder to an entrepreneur who makes the perfect deals. With Facebook, he has solidified his position as a CEO who acquires any business that poses a major threat. Right now it is the biggest social media platform in the world with over 2 billion monthly active users.
People don’t just use Facebook for writing on each other’s walls or putting up a status, it has become a formidable mode of communication thanks to the Messenger which has 1.2 billion active users. Back in 2014, when WhatsApp posed a major threat to Facebook, they bought it in a deal worth $19 billion. Similarly, when Instagram posed a threat to Facebook, in terms of its active user engagement and rising business accounts, Facebook bought it for $1 billion. And with the power of Instagram, Facebook has been able to push Snapchat over the edge. Right now 250 million use Instagram Stories while Snapchat has only 166 million active users.
9. Jeff Bezos
If Jeff Bezos can teach you one thing, it is that no idea is small if you strike at the right time.
Jeff Bezos started Amazon in 1994 when online retailers were unheard of. Using the Dot Com boom of the 90s, he launched the Amazon website, which initially was just a bookstore. In just one year, he was selling books in America and 45 other countries, bringing in $20,000 in sales per week. In the next ten years, Amazon had introduced CDs, clothing, and electronic items to its store. In 2004, Amazon made a revenue of $6.9 billion, which increased to $8.5 billion in 2005.
Today, Amazon has transformed into a huge online business with numerous subsidiaries. From selling books in 1994, Amazon now sells and produces its own electronics like the famed K, has its own cloud computing software called Amazon Web Services(AWS). The company raked in $135.98 billion in revenue last year and has made Jeff Bezos one of the richest men in the world.
10. Oprah Winfrey
Oprah’s public life is a major lesson that your gender and skin color does not define what you can achieve.
Oprah Winfrey started hosting a talk show at a time when all the key players on TV were men and, more interestingly, all of them were white. Before she was a business mogul, Oprah used to wear potato sacks as clothing because her family could not afford anything better. Overcoming a troubled childhood, Oprah secured a full scholarship at the University of Tennessee but left it to pursue a career in media. By the age of 20, she had already achieved a major milestone. She was the youngest woman and the first black person to become a news anchor.
She then moved on to AM Chicago and transformed it from one of the lowest-rated TV shows to the most highest-rated ones. That show would later be renamed to what we now know as ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ – the highest-rated TV show of its kind in history. Now 63 years old, Oprah is the wearer of many hats which include talk show host, actress, producer, media proprietor, and philanthropist.

Finance: The 25 most generous philanthropists in America today
