Famed manga creator Akira Toriyama has passed away on March 1, 2024 at age 68 due to acute subdural hematoma.
Toriyama began his first serialized manga, Dr. Slump, in 1980, and it inspired two television anime and multiple films. Toriyama followed it up with Dragon Ball, which ran from 1984 to 1995, and is still inspiring manga and anime sequels and spinoffs today. The manga's Dragon Ball anime adaptation, its sequel Dragon Ball Z, and its other numerous sequels and anime films are equally as well-known as the manga, and its hero Goku has become a character known throughout the world.
Toriyama is also well-known as the character designer for the Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon and Tobal games.
Most recently, Toriyama was working closely with the production for the Dragon Ball Daima anime series, the most recent anime series based on Dragon Ball, and is credited for the new anime's story and character designs.
Akira Toriyama - Creator/Writer/Artist on Dragon Ball and Sand Land and Dr. Slump, Artist for Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon - Dies at 68
I know everybody's talking about it, but I feel like everyone is focusing 100% on how he was the Dragon Ball guy. And while that's undoubtedly his most famous work, I'd say that he had many famous works. He designed all of the Dragon Quest series' characters, which is probably his second-biggest contribution to culture. He also created/designed both characters and settings for the seminal RPG Chrono Trigger, designed the characters for the Tobal series of fighting games, designed all characers for the Blue Dragon series, and wrote/drew NUMEROUS other manga, with his second-most-famous probably being either Sand Land or Dr. Slump. You can get a better look at his entire oeuvre here.
I was legitimately stunned when the news broke. It always felt like he'd keep going forever, y'know?
Rest in Peace to beloved creator, Akira Toriyama. I just got the news several minutes ago, and I instantly fell into grief. I love this man so much, and all he has done. I may have criticized his work now and then, but it never took away from how much I looked up to him and cared about him.
Dragonball changed my life.
One of my favorite game series, Dragon Quest Monsters, changed my life.
The way he singlehandedly set so much of the ground work for the Shounen world, inspiring many other creators and paving the way for what we have today is unmatched. Now and for many decades, his works will continue to inspire people and change lives. The speeches he has given, thoughts and ideas he's shared, and words of encouragement he's given to so many will stay with me and many others til the end of our lives.
More than anything, I really hope that in his final moments he knew how loved he was by all of us. He fully knew the kind of impact he had, and that hundreds of millions would be grieving for him. Rest in Peace, Akira Toriyama. Wherever you go, may you continue to find happiness.
Oliems and Epon from the PS1 3D fighter Tobal No.1
this was one of my favorites as a kid, really unique fighting game with character designs by Akira Toriyama!
Second and final entry in the Tobal series of fighting games on the PlayStation, Tobal 2 like its predecessor the games characters are designed by Akira Toriyama.
Tobal No 1 sold extremely well in Japan with over 700k copes sold, this was likely due to the FF7 demo that came with the game, these sales however did not translate to the US where the game failed to break the 100k mark, as a result Tobal 2 was not released outside of Japan.
