THRASHERS BY NAME -- STREET PUNK-METAL ASSASSINS IN ATTITUDE.
PIC(S) INFO: Mega-spotlight on late, great bassist Cliff Burton and rhythm guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield of American thrash metal band METALLICA, performing live at the Breaking Sound Festival at Le Bourget Airport outside of Paris, France, on August 29, 1984. 📸: Pete Cronin (I believe he took all of these).
Man, these took a while to track down, and I'll bet there's even more out there that probably haven't even been published yet. I also had to double-check that they were all different, too, seeing as they're multiple shots of just Cliff & James. Stay HEAVY!!

MOVING UP THE RANKS OF '80s THRASH METAL-MANIA -- RECORD SIGNINGS FOR ONLY THE TRUEST BELIEVERS.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on American thrash metal band METALLICA, photographed during a "Ride the Lightning" record signing at Chris' Warped Records, Lakewood, Ohio, USA, on February 2, 1985.
NOTE: The band signed to major label Elektra Records in the fall of 1984, and re-released "Ride the Lightning" on said label in the fall of the same year, hence why the band was still promoting the album into early 1985. Moving up in the world indeed.

HAVING NAILED THE AUDITION -- THAT HAMMETT KID WAS REALLY GOING PLACES IN '83.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a photo-series titled "Kirk Hammett's First Shows," documenting the then newly-recruited guitarist earliest gigs with American thrash metal band METALLICA, c. 1983. All photos from the collection of Lars Ulrich.
JOINING THE BAND: ""I had a week to learn all the songs; and back then, learning eight or 10 songs in a week would have been pretty difficult. I could probably learn eight or 10 songs in like four days now because I’m just better at it. But back then it was a lot.”
“And I remember sitting down with that Metallica demo tape and just learning as much as I could, and then flying out. And I remember when I arrived in New York City, and I arrived at the rehearsal spot in Jamaica, Queens.”
“It was like 20 degrees outside, and it was snowing. That was a bit of a shock for me because I’d never left California at that point. I remember getting there, and it was like early evening, and those guys were just getting up. And I thought, ‘Who the gets up at six or seven o’clock at night?!’
“I remember saying hello to them and then 15 minutes later, they’re saying to me, ‘Come on, let’s just play some tunes! Well, what do you want to play?’ And I instantly went for the easiest song to play, which is ‘Seek and Destroy.’ And I remember playing ‘Seek and Destroy’ with them, and I couldn’t understand why Lars and James kept on looking at each other and smiling.”
“And I thought, "Wow, they must really enjoy this song… Or maybe there’s something else going on that I don’t know about." I later found out that it was because they were just so happy that it sounded so good right from the start.
"I just started playing shows with them. And then the next thing, I’m in the studio with them and recording [the 1983 METALLICA debut] "Kill ‘Em All." So I thought, "Well, I must be in the band if I’m recording an album with 'em now." Because they never sat me down and said, "You’re officially in the band" – they never did that!""

U.S. THRASH & HARDCORE REACHES UK SHORES -- UP THE THRASHER-PUNKS!
PIC INFO: Spotlight on an unnamed UK thrasher with impeccable tastes in the then underground sounds of the era, mainly of the Bay Area thrash metal & hardcore punk subgenres, c. 1984.
Really wish there was more background info to be shared on this certain UK thrasher (what gig he was attending, for starters), but the mysterious aspect does hold its own allure as well.

"PLAYING HOMAGE TO VERBAL ABUSE, T.S.O.L., MINOR THREAT, D.I., DR. KNOW, D.R.I., STOOGES..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a record/promo advertisement for "Undisputed Attitude," SLAYER's seventh studio album, consisting almost entirely of '80s hardcore punk covers. The album was released in May 1996 under the American Recordings label.
MIDWEST METAL: "My first question to you is, go back a little to the release of 1996's "Undisputed Attitude." Did it do what you wanted it to do? Did it do what you expected it to do?" TOM ARAYA: "It did what I expected it to do, which was not a lot (laughs)! We kept a very low profile, we did a very short tour in which we played smaller clubs. It was low key. I mean it was a cover album, we thought if we put it out and the kids are into it, they're into it. Even the shows that we did we did way more SLAYER stuff, not at all many covers, maybe four or five. I knew it wouldn't do very well, people want to hear SLAYER! The real die-hards picked up on it and that was expected. Kerry (King) really wanted to do the record and it actually started out as classic metal songs, stuff like DEEP PURPLE, PRIEST, UFO the bands that influenced us. We were even gonna try a DOORS song because they're such an influence of mine."

CHANNELING HIS INNER TONY "BONES" ROBERTS -- THE NIGHTMARE CONTINUES!!
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a mega photo-dump of a young Kirk Hammett of early METALLICA rocking the almighty English hardcore punk band DISCHARGE, c. "Ride the Lightning" era/tour.
"METALLICA were as likely to be listening to the English bullet-punk anarchists DISCHARGE as they were [THIN] LIZZY or THE MISFITS during those record-playing binges in El Cerrito. "Back in the partying days," says Hetfield, "we'd put on a MOTÖRHEAD record, ANGEL WITCH, then DISCHARGE -- and no one flinched. It all belonged together. It was aggressive, it had guitars, it felt good." That's Hammett in a DISCHARGE T-shirt on the back cover of "Ride the Lightning.""

MILLIONS OF DEAD CHILDREN BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE MULTI-DEATH CORPORATION.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on back cover sleeve art/B-side to the "Chicken Squawk" 7 inch EP by American hardcore punk band MILLIONS OF DEAD CHILDREN (MDC), released in 1984 under R Radical Records.
7 INCH EP OVERVIEW: "It was 1984 and there was a gigantic famine going on in parts of Africa especially Ethiopia. M.D.C. attacked the problem head on. This was all due to greed by multi-death corporations and corrupt governments. If not for this greed this problem could easily be solved. Musically you would see M.D.C. continue to get faster and more thrash-like. Their lyrics would continue to tackle the cause of these problems and offer solutions. This record first came out in 1984 and went out of print shortly after."
