I always wanted to create a magazine cover, and while I was thinking of a subject to draw, it occurred to me that I never made an illustration for these two! So I present you the first issue of Paradox !

Would love to hear your thoughts on Connor, if you have more! He's such a deeply interesting character yet nobody seems to care about him?
Lol I care so much about Connor. Like I bring up Connor's mom to everyone I know. WHERE IS SHE @ LOGAN???
The thing about Connor is that I do think he's largely given up on having a good relationship with his father... But not enough to truly just set it aside, right? The first hint we get at that is his butter freakout, which as funny as it is, was really about pleasing Logan, right? I think these little moments are both a sign that Connor hasn't fully given up on achieving some level of acceptance from Logan--but also a sign that he truly doesn't have a real grip. If Connor was fully with it, he wouldn't do a lot of things. But if Connor was fully with it, he'd definitely know that there is zero chance that Logan will ever give him what he really wants--whether it's a cool $100 mill to fund his campaign, or the presidency, or general approval.
I tend to wonder if part of the reason why Logan is so resentful, borderline, of Connor--resentful and ashamed, of course--is that he considers him almost like... a by blow? Like his children by Caroline were children born after he'd become Logan Roy. His marriage to Caroline, who seems to be well-connected herself, was a part of his general achievement. His marriage to Connor's mother... I don't know. Logan's relationships with women are weird. Even when he's fucking them, he doesn't seem to have much passion for them. So I tend to wonder if Connor's mother was his only actual "love", as it were? Certainly, I think she married him when he wasn't anywhere near who he is now, and I wonder if he associates that era in his life with shame, and therefore associates Connor with that as well. His relationship with Connor's mother happened without as much deceit or politicking, and therefore it was weak; Connor is a product of weakness, and therefore must be inherently weak himself.
And Connor does nothing to dispel this, really. But I get the sense that he's seen a lot of shit in his life. Whatever happened to his mom; watching his siblings be continuously neglected to the point that he stepped in; at the same time being expected to compete with those siblings, and for some reason (I suspect because he may have actually had a taste of a normal childhood for half a second) not measuring up; basically being parentified, while also being expected to crush them; and slowly having them abandon him and dismiss him just as their father has. Plus he was exposed to people like Mo, the wolf pack, the general wrongdoings at Waystar, obviously from a formative age.
So while none of that excuses his many, many faults. But I do think Connor can be explained, somewhat. And just like with his siblings, what Connor gets upset about is never what he's freaking out about on the surface. He freaked out about the magazine cover mockup Kendall had, but not because he was worried about how it would damage his reputation, not truly. He was mad because I think he naively had this idea that going to Kendall's birthday party would mean that they'd actually act like siblings for a minute. Which suggests that when the kids were young, there were moments that were normal. Maybe those camping trips.
It's capital T Tragic. But also Connor wants to blow up America. So there's that.

CV/Mock-up’s of work
The freelance photographers I studied as part of my research did not have an industry-standard CV on their website, their online presence revolved mainly around visuals. However, having a one-page industry pitched CV is very important in order to apply for jobs in the industry.
Tumblr media
I have included hyperlinks as well as a QR code, which will bring the user to my portfolio website. The CV is designed so that it can be printed out (no colour and images included). I uploaded it on a separate page on my website where it can also be downloaded.
I used the CV of a Digital Media graduate as guidance
Tumblr media
I designed a visual CV as well as two portfolio magazines/flipbooks
Visual CV first version:
Tumblr media
Visual CV final version:
Tumblr media
A lot of work went into my portfolio magazines, the plan is to carry on creating them and use them as a timeline to track how my work progresses throughout the years.
I received feedback for my magazines that I took on board when finalizing them:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-5-Axr-Ad7mTQ8u6r0ml3dSrVArDPlWO
and here are the final magazines on issu.com:
https://issuu.com/stilyanska_/docs/x__2_?fr=sNjMyYjMyMjA2OTE
https://issuu.com/stilyanska_/docs/final.magportfolio.fornow?fr=sNDA3YzMyMjA2OTE
MOCK-UP’s
First attempt of creating my own MOCK-UP’s:
First I took the photos in my room..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then edited the covers of my magazine on top of the real magazine in the photograph using Adobe photoshop; The liquid in the mug is supposed to be coffee, or at least that's what I was looking for when I retrieved the GIF from the Instagram GIF gallery (saw this on TikTok). Used the same technique
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second atempt:
Used the same technique as the first time, except for adding GIFs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finnaly I downloaded some premade Mock-Up’s from freepik
<a href='https://www.freepik.com/psd/mockup'>Mockup psd created by freepik - www.freepik.com</a>
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While trying to embed my portfolio magazines on my website Issuu crashed...
Tumblr media
Issuu is a great platform in the sense that it is pretty straight forward and it is easy to create a flipbook by just uploading a PDF file. I do however believe that it does not provide value for money or otherwise said It is a bit overpriced and its sharing features are not good enough.

Diary Post: My Thoughts and Processes on Making “Silent Strength” It’s lengthy, taking place over long period of time. Mainly written for my future-self to remember what I went through, but also for anyone who is curious. Now that the project is over, I can post without reservations. There are certain things I need to keep secret though, so if I’m vague I do so intentionally!
Basically, a lot of number-crunching, physical labor, and psychological labor.
It started off as kind of a joke tweet I made. I had enough content to make a Tales Of art book and people were receptive to it. So… I thought maybe I could go somewhere with this. A few weeks later, I suddenly had a lot of Kratos art. Like. 80% of all my Tales art was Kratos. It didn’t make sense to make a broad Tales Of book when really most of it was Kratos.
I hadn’t made a book since I was in college despite it being one of my favorite things to do. They were never art books, just some editorial design projects that totally didn’t count. This book… would be my first-ever art book.
Several times, I came close to having enough art to print a book - the last time was my large collection of Yusuke Kitagawa, but the quality wasn’t where I wanted.  At that time, I was still experimenting with my iPad Pro and figuring out Procreate, so that was what I used him for.
NGL, I was pretty afraid of looking like a clown. After doing all this work, what if no one actually buys it? I was talking to some friends and they said they would buy it. It was enough for me. In the end, I’m creating something that I love. - The first thing I really wanted to work on was the cover. It needed to be epic but also mysterious (lol)… It was a good time to practice lighting and backgrounds. The cover had to be freaking Fantastic. I spent 3 days drawing nonstop. I was on vacation so I could spend full days just drawing. It was really intense. I would stop in the evenings to go for a run or else my legs would never get circulation again.
The hardest part was keeping it secret. I wanted to share it with the world right away bc I was so proud of it. Well, all I could do was show it to my parents and some close friends. They didn’t know who Kratos is, but it was obvious I was crazy about him.
Initially, I was doing some hand-lettering for the zine title instead of using a typeface. Tbh, I was so sure I was naming this zine “Blame Your Fate!” bc that is such an iconic line. But it just didn’t work with my cover, which looked… a little too serene for that. So… Silent Strength or Divine Strength? I asked around and got my answer.
But what size? All of my art has been on letter canvases. I wanted it to be large so you could see the details in the art. I’ll just start with that. - Luckily, I had all my Kratos-related art in one place. I started my InDesign file and threw everything in there just to see what it looked like. Man, I draw a lot of boxes… But I didn’t want them all next to each other. I also wanted to kinda organize it by the people Kratos hangs out with. There’s a Yuan section LOL… and a Lloyd section… and an Anna section. Idk, I tried to get some kind of order in there with a sprinkling of full spreads here and there to keep it fresh and interesting for the eyes.
I hadn’t worked with InDesign on such an intense level since college. I forgot all of the tips and tricks we learned in class. Spent some time reading on how to do things again… like adding page numbers. - I started drafting my pre-order form. It’s my first time making a google form like this. It’s kind of fun? I spent a long time on it, despite how simple it was. This was going to be my “Store” so it had to look and sound good. - My friend introduced me to charm-making. It seemed easy enough, and I wanted to give my zine more oomph. Besides, I’ve always wanted to make a charm.
I remember someone saying they’d buy a book of just the 4 Seraphim if it existed. I like them too and they lack art imo. In the end, I decided to do a polaroid charm. It’s not really that unique but I wanted Kratos to have actual friends to hang out with for once LOL.
She was going to do a group order to try to reduce the costs. I thought maybe 4 weeks would give me enough time. In the end she said I only have 2. I work well under pressure, so needless to say, I did make that deadline. I actually sketched the whole thing on the plane headed home. - After playing the game the second time, watching the OVA again, and reading “Offerings to a Star,” I have gained a real soft spot for Yuan.  My friend once said, “If you weren’t stolen away by Kratos, you would be in love with Yuan.” Lol. I’ve been in a “Kratos and Yuan hanging out” mood lately, so of course I needed something good for the zine. They’re so cute together! Now… what is the bro-est thing I can draw?
I was currently in Florida for my friend’s wedding. I was friends with the groom and his best man since high school, so that makes it 10 years now. Seeing how they’re still friends after all this time, despite living in opposite sides of the country, was really moving to me. Of course, me being me, I could see Kratos and Yuan’s long friendship being similar to this, if they had gone to school together. I just had to draw it. - When I got back from vacation, I did some research on zine sizes. Mine was HUGE compared to others. I just didn’t quite realize it until I held a magazine in my hands. It really is huge…
I settled for a medium size. 7x9. I really liked how it looked. Petite but not too petite. Unfortunately resizing my book had messed up my artwork placement so I spent hours rearranging all the text and resizing my images. I found out afterwards that there’s a way to retain the format while changing the document size. Gee, that would have been helpful 4 hours ago.
Sadly, choosing a custom size booklet makes printing more expensive. But I wanted it badly enough that I’d be willing to pay for it. Letter size is just too large… - I decided to stop dragging my feet and post a promo. I just really needed a deadline for myself to get this all done before July ended. I’m happy it was well-received. A lot of people like Kratos huh…
Anyway, the pre-order is due in a week and I still don’t know what all the costs are yet. I need a physical proof ASAP to weigh at the post office! - Something possessed me one day to do another drawing. I don’t usually do painterly style (mainly because it’s really difficult and takes 10x longer) but I just REALLY wanted to push myself on this Final Piece to the zine. I wanted it to be… radiant. Almost religious. I worked on it obsessively. From breakfast to sundown. The only time I would stop was at 7pm to go running or else my legs would give out on me.
Call me crazy, but I would save my progress on my phone so I could examine it for errors during my warmup. I also spend an hour examining it for errors before going to bed. It’s a miracle I hadn’t dreamt of the painting. - I sent my files in on Sunday in hopes that they start working on it first thing on Monday…. and it HAPPENED! They finished before I even woke up. I think they start work at like 6am…
Of course, I drove over there as soon as I heard so I can get a look. “Please… please let the colors be okay,” I prayed as I was driving. I barely remember driving there, I was so lost in thought. It would be another long ordeal if I had to fix all the colors.
Thank the stars. The press proof looked BEAUTIFUL!! I was screaming to the client coordinator how much I loved it. I mean, I worried for a looooong time that everything would turn out too dark (it usually does) but it was PERFECT. I was especially worried about the cover, which contained a lot of yellow and I def did not want it to come out mustardy… But it was great in the end!
The press operator is a quiet man. He’s got a scary face and never smiles but I think he’s secretly nice. He has done a lot of favors for me in the past without my asking. He was the one to print, bind, and trim the book for me. Obviously he had to have seen what I was drawing. I wonder what he thought of it…? He walked away before I could express how happy and thankful was. He didn’t need to hear it. It was like he already knew. So cool…
I immediately took it to the post office to weigh it. I needed as much info as I could get and plus, I was dying to know for myself. This is the week I was supposed to open pre-orders and there was still a lot I needed to do. Take pictures, create mockups, pricing, etc.
NGL, all of these costs were building up fast. It was so darn expensive to make a zine while also keeping prices down. But I wanted so much more for my baby. Extra glossy cover, perfect binding!! I knew by the end of this, I probably wouldn’t make much money. It hurt a little, but I tried to think that it was for the greater good. Learning experience and all that. And creating something beautiful. Especially something beautiful of Kratos. - Pricing was really the hardest part. I pretty much threw profit out the window. However, I definitely did not want to be losing money. My dad and I had worked together to create a spreadsheet of expenses to make sure my head was above water. I followed it… loosely.
My friend came to talk to me at the right moment. I was sort of panicking at the prices. She made me realize I was thinking way too hard about it and gave me some tips based on her own experience. It really put my mind at ease talking to someone who understands my woes.
The truth of the matter is, the book is wonderfully made and has a lot of pages - countless hours of drawing. There is only so much I can do about pricing. It is what it is… I just needed to come to terms with my own worth. - Boy, what am I going to do once the zine is done? My friend says that I’ll be so over Kratos that I’ll stop drawing him (but the love remains). It’s like… all of the intense planning, working, struggling nonstop will just suddenly… stop. TBH, I’m running out of ideas. I spent it all on the zine. - Photoshoot today. I had to paint my nails purple for this occasion. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the look I wanted in the apartment. It’s just so naked without props. I think I’ll take it to a cafe for some nicer backgrounds. I talked it over with my friend and decided to do a quick flip-through of the zine as a promotional video. I used the most professional video program I had on hand… Snapchat. It actually turned out pretty legit and of course I slapped stickers on there because it’s Snapchat.
I had to tape/hide some of the pages for the video because I wasn’t actually done with the drawings. I had the printers print it anyway so I could examine it for color accuracy.
I’m really stressed about pricing now. It turns out I had a lot more international fans than I anticipated. I wish I took notes on interest earlier in the game to cater to them. I had a list of “possible buyers” and I only just now decided to check where they live? Foolish.
I did another cost analysis on paper to figure out what my goal was to make up for the charms. Right now they’ve cost me a fortune for something that was supposed to be giveaway. Other things that rack up are packaging costs, PayPal fees, and some other supplies I needed for this project.
Maybe I shouldn’t have made it 40 pages. It is an impressive number, but no one is really paying for quantity. I think 25 is a better number lol. If I had done that, I could have had my super-gloss cover like I wanted. :’(
There is hope though. And I’ve placed it in the hands of my followers to come through for me. I think I’ll open pre-orders on Saturday or Sunday, depending on what I finish. - “Losing your cool will only lead to poor decisions.”
Thanks, Kratos twitter bot. You always know what to say.
I read this post today on what makes people buy zines. Very interesting!
https://twitter.com/andythelemon_/status/1141469048653398019 - Photoshoot part 2 today. My friend and I went to a cafe nearby that had some nice atmosphere in hopes of finding the right shots. I brought all of my Kratos merch just in case. I’m glad I did though, since the tables were pretty sparse and it was difficult to capture the backgrounds without getting a bunch of random people in it too.
I would have been the photographer, but I definitely wanted my hands in the shots. In a way, it was meaningful - to show that this was made by my own two hands. Plus, I wanted to depict natural interaction with the product. It made it feel real.
The photos were cute! I feared it would look a little amateurish with all the merch in there, but I think fun was what I was really going for, not “professional.” And plus the flip-through was a Snap anyway LOL. As long as the photos have good lighting and tasteful composition, you really can’t go wrong with “fun.”
Now that I’ve finished editing my photos, there really isn’t anything holding me back from opening pre-orders. I’ve pretty much come to terms with my pricing. If I fail to break even, I’ll just have to open commissions to try to make up for it. I was telling my friend on the way home, “I gave this zine EVERYTHING I had to give. So at the very least, I won’t be disappointed in myself.” No stone left unturned, no detail left unchecked. It was perfect according to my standards. I really love my zine okay?!
I thought I was crazy for not only choosing a small fandom, I narrowed it down even further by picking ONE GUY to make this zine about. She replied, “Even if it’s small, those people who love him now must be EXTREMELY LOYAL to still be in love with a character from a 15-year-old game. All of them will want your zine.” - I went to bed that night with the intention of making the pre-order post live in the morning. I was so nervous I couldn’t sleep. I was wide awake until at least 5 or 6 am. Luckily, I was able to doze off for a an hour or two before I would shake myself awake again. It was a mixture of anxiety and excitement. It was the moment of truth - to see if all my effort made a difference. Was it going to sell? - The pre-order post looked really freaking good. I’ll give it that. I even made a YT account just to post that darn preview video on tumblr lol. It was definitely fun seeing everyone’s excitement and we all just freaked out together.
I broke even! That’s what really matters. Honestly at this point, I couldn’t care less if I made profit or not. I now know how much people really like the zine and that alone made me so happy I could die.
I was particularly fascinated at Google Form’s ability to transfer all the data collected into a spreadsheet. That is extremely helpful. I spent hours organizing the data. It was really fun…?! Now I can tell who gets invoiced and who paid and separate them into categories. IT’S FANTASTIC!
Stayed up late researching how much adding tracking could be. I had a slight panic attack thinking “what if my books got lost in transit?” It would really hurt me to have to reprint books and ship them again. And then I realized I will need to fill out customs forms for all international orders. Yikes, I’m gonna be living at the post office lol. You can print them out at home if you fill out the form online but there are still some things I’m uncertain about. I may visit the post office later this week to ask all my questions. - This morning I sent out everyone’s invoices. I gave the international people the option to purchase tracking. It’s expensive… but I need to provide that option just in case.
I received a nice message from someone who offered to advertise for me on Instagram. Of course, I gave them the OK! I’m really so shocked they would do that… They said the liked the zine so much it deserved more exposure. My dude… I love you… T_T
I thought about advertising on insta myself earlier in the week. For some reason I felt it was going to be fruitless since I don’t have an art account on there with a following. So, I gave up on the idea. Hey it worked out in the end.
I’ve never been so organized in my entire life. I want this zine experience to be perfect. The people have placed their trust in me, so I cannot mess up. - Edited some pages in the zine. The typography must be perfect… It made me think back to undergrad days in graphic design school. Man, if only I can present this as a project - photos, videos, matching accessories and all. I’d probably get an A lol. - Orders slow down after the first day. The rest is just about getting new people to see the post and giving other people more time to decide.
I finished my Kratos stationery today. It’s going to be so cute. My friend said people would want to buy it but I don’t have it in me to do more products at this time. Plus, I want it to be a surprise.
Why make stationery? Well my real job (no, I don’t draw Kratos all day for a living) is a stationery designer! It would feel really wrong not to put into practice what etiquette I’ve learned in this business. Plus, I felt that it was necessary to properly thank all those who ordered. And it’s fun?
I started designing the shipping labels for the domestic orders since I don’t need to fill out a customs form for those. I wish I had sticker labels but… it’s okay. It will still look good in the end. - Every so often, I would get nervous at the amount of money I’m responsible for. Perhaps, if I had a store with existing products I wouldn’t feel this way, but the fact that the books haven’t been printed yet made me scared. I know, I need this money to even print the books in the first place, but I’m just baffled at my customers’ trust in almost a total stranger. I felt pressured that I could not let them down and lose that trust. It probably didn’t help that I watched a documentary on Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) that day.
So, I prayed every single day that nothing would go wrong. I’d check my spreadsheet constantly for any mistakes. It was a little obsessive, but I would rather be that than overlook something.
I began collecting cardboard boxes. My plan was to cut them up to protect the books during transit. I would have preferred hard envelopes but they were a bit pricey. If I have to do more work myself, so be it.
I’ve been getting nice DMs from some buyers. I think my invoice due date scared them… I really did not intend to be strict, but I wanted people to pay now if they can rather than forget about it. This happens at work all the time, so the best thing to do is have it due immediately. It would not look good to have to wait on stragglers when I close pre-orders, so I’ll probably reach out when there is one week left. - My Kratos stationery arrived! Aww it is SO CUTE!!! My babies… I have a lot of notes to write so I got started right away. It’s going to be a lot of work trying to come up with creative ways to say “thank you,” but I don’t mind. I said I was going to put my all into the zine experience so I will.
At long last, the charm order has been put in motion. My friend said it could take a while… I hope it won’t be longer than 3 weeks. I really do not want to keep everyone waiting. I may ship out the ones who did not win a charm first. I mean, there is no reason to make those guys wait. I should ask the charm winners if they still want to wait and see if anyone wants to give it up for someone else who is more patient. Hm. - I finally stopped by the post office today to collect customs forms. I have my work cut out for me since I’m filling all of them in by hand. D:
I’m not used to international addresses so I think I’ll ask for help in checking them for spelling errors and typos. Heaven forbid I mess up on the very last part of the zine experience.
In my nervousness, I decided to reach out about invoices early on. If someone wanted to cancel, I would rather find out sooner rather than later. Everyone was really nice about paying and thank goodness they’re still excited.
Feeling kind of overwhelmed by all the things I need to do, but it’s a good thing. If I don’t know what to do, I can either: cut cardboard, write letters, type shipping labels, draw more Kratos for a… possible volume 2? Someone I talked to today already said they’ll pre-order a second book if I make one. Omg I think I’ll die. But we’ll see. It’s just a joke right now haha… - Preorders end today. I had another nightmare last night that the books could not be printed properly and there was nothing I could do. Why do I keep getting nightmares about the zine! I had one a few days before about people canceling their orders when I asked them about the invoices. I’ll take these dreams with a grain of salt. I’m probably just stressed/worried but everything is going to be okay. When I open my eyes, nothing is on fire.
I received my final proof a few days ago. With all of the artwork completed and changes applied. The book looks good, no doubt about it. There was only one thing I was nit-picky about but it can be fixed. The press operator offered to print another book for me to inspect. I’ll go see it on Monday and then submit the rest of the orders. I also asked to to have a meeting with the press operator so we are on the same page. It would be beneficial to have an understanding of how my book is made so that I may be more helpful to him.
I spent the day preparing shipping labels. I hate to admit, I am not too familiar with the format international addresses so I had an address validator open as I was typing them in. For the most part, everyone was helpful in already formatting their addresses in the preorder form! - My parents called me the day after preorders were closed. They wanted to say congratulations on my success. No one thought it would do this well. I couldn’t be offended by that since I was also guilty of it. I’m happy though. It feels like my love spread across the world and was contagious.
I tried to think of what advice I would give to others. Obviously, genuine love for the subject and hard work were a necessity. But it would be good to consider value. If I were selling it at this price, I had to make sure my pieces and presentation looked the part. I ask myself, if someone else sold it, would I buy it?
I sent out messages to all the charm winners in the morning. I wanted to apologize profusely at the ridiculous amount of time it has taken to get them made. But no, I’ve got to stop apologizing. I stated the facts and left it at that. Everyone was really kind and patient—to which I was thankful for. I don’t usually get that when I’m working customer service. - All the books were done printing in one day. Wow! I went to pick it up immediately of course. I can’t believe all of this is coming to an end. I finished preparing the mailers. All that was left was to stuff and seal the domestic orders. They were the easiest to do so I’m going to ship those first. The rest will need customs forms, which I haven’t filled out just yet. It’s going to be a while for those…
The mailers were quite sturdy with the cardboard cutouts I slipped in them. I have nothing to worry about. I’m sure my babies will be okay! - I took a whole box of domestic orders to the post office today. Wasn’t sure what to expect. But my clerk had to input every single address one at a time while I checked for errors. Omg, why are the post office shipping labels SO HUGE. I thought it was going to be half the size. And they’re ruining my designer labels! Slight panic but oh well…
I had a long long line behind me. I’m so sorry, people. Luckily there were two clerks or I would be really sweating. Despite my intimidating box of zines, the clerk and I had Synergy and we managed to ship all of these in about 15 minutes. I received a very long receipt and quite the bill lol. - Shipped the international orders today. I was kind of a mess since I had no idea what to do. I keep wondering if I can help speed up the process in any way but I don’t think I have the option to ship first-class at home.
When shipping international, keep the post office copy of the customs forms together with the package since they use that to type the address info into the system. Also, we get free tracking, which I did not know about. The other clerk told me that we did not get tracking for international first-class but I guess he was misinformed. It’s good to know for next time. - The charms finally arrived!! And THEY’RE HOLOGRAPHIC?! It was pretty awesome, but it makes picture-taking kind of difficult!! Anyway, I was a tiny bit disgruntled that they got my order incorrect, and I even asked for a reprint. But they said no, so I left it at that. Besides, it seems the holographic effect was well-received.
I like this size that I made. It’s really cute! Larger than your normal charm but not too huge. It’s almost like an Instax photo! - There was one customer who I found lives near me! I asked her if she wanted me to hand-deliver it to her in a public setting and she agreed (to my amazement). We finally met a few days ago and talked for hours and hours lol! I’m glad to have finally made a new friend here in this town but of course she’s moving away in two weeks. <:’3
We’re going to meet again to make the most of her time left. - I shipped the rest of the orders on the following Monday. I HAD to get these out. The poor guys have been waiting over a month! I think I picked a bad time to go because I had a huge line behind me and only one guy working. People in line were getting antsy or mad. The clerk at the other post office was super fast but not this guy…
For some reason shipping to the UK and Japan nearly doubled in price since the last time I checked. RIP. T_T - Omg I finally made a mistake. I wrote a letter to the wrong person. And the contents of that letter are too personalized!!! I am dying of embarrassment!!!!! Screams!! Had to apologize to both customers too!!! Luckily they were good sports about it but I’m seriously kicking myself AAAAAAAA!!!! - The most rewarding part after sending all my babies away is seeing the commentary on my project. It is so so nice to receive positive feedback. People are happy! Happy with something I created out of thin air. Everything was worth it 1000 times over. I can die happy!
I’m especially thankful to those who show understanding for how much effort went into it. It definitely wasn’t easy and I poured way too many hours into it… not that I regret that.
I don’t want to jump the gun but I would really love to make a volume 2. Because I know I can do better than last time. New and improved art and comics! But we’ll see if I make enough pieces for another book. I was against printing 40 pages before but now I kind of like it. It feels more worth it than a 25-page zine. If i’m going though so much effort, might as well bring in the entire package.
I’ll be printing more of this volume for Aselia Con 2020. Now I know people will appreciate it.

Not An April Fools Gag; That’s A Game Boy Advance With A GameCube Stick Affixed For Reals
What you're seeing is a modded GBA that I spotted on eBay. It's a real thing! Though it doesn't magically grant analogue control to all the digital input only games on the system, which is all of them for the record (sorry). Then again, it could be argued that the controls in WarioWare Twisted is technically analogue...
That aside aside, welcome to yet another recap of stuff posted over at the Attract Mode Twitter! Though this time it's gonna be a bit on the short side, relatively speaking; even I know covering two entire whole weeks has led to hard to handle Tumblr posts, so I'm going to try concentrating on just one week at a time/attempt weekly updates.
Let's see how well that goes...
Hey, it's SF2 IRL thanks to ARKit (via prostheticknowledge)...

At the time, when I first tweeted about it, there were only three left of Amanda Visell’s Player One Mario; no idea how many there are now...

The YMO member in question, Haruomi Hosono, also did a Xevious remix album, which longtime readers of the blog will hopefully recall.
Sticking with Namco CMs, there’s a pair of longtime faves that I could have sworn I’ve already posted as well, yet cannot find. Though as noted, many times already, the search functionality here is broken.

Back to the subject of print, can’t seem to find any info on the Futabasha Fantasy Novel Series, which (I think) was a line of video game novelizations; this one appears to be written by the creator of Xevious himself (via shmups)...

... And that's a real shame, cuz aside from the quality of the clothing itself being high, some of the ho-hum looking designs could be really engaging with a few minor tweaks, like this b&w women's jacket with a very random assortment of b&w Super Mario World sprites...
Tumblr media
In addition to clothing, you had accessories, like iPhone cases...

Being that friend who is REALLY into video games means I'm asked a wide variety of questions from folks who are not, like why @beesmygod  is "freaking out" over a Sonic & Garfield two pack for the PC...

... I'll be honest, I don't really understand why either.
Here we have a mockup for an ad blocker that replaces banners with GBA screenshots, which I really want to see happen (via @tinycartridge)...

Design It Yourself: Animated Crystal Light Reflection Effect
Tumblr media
Prismatic light reflections can add visual interest to a good range of design projects, from corporate print flat lays to animated Instagram stories. Over the last two years, we have seen the organic shadow trend delivered to life with plants, leaves, and gestures. It’s time for a replacement flavor of this effect: the magical reflections created by light crossing crystals.
Tumblr media
The prismatic sun catcher reflection, generally , may be a combination of two opposite elements: artificially cut, polished glass crystals and natural, uncontrollable light rays. These crystal light reflections also combine the consequences of two recent trends: mystical crystal stones and natural shadows, learn how to creative brings in mind just find the best institutions which has provided the best graphic designing course in Delhi. join them and get start journey. Where does this iridescent light trend come from, is it far more than a visible Instagram trend, and can it last?
Tumblr media
Didn’t we already see this stuff?
Remember the rainbow reflection filter on Instagram or the Bokeh effect trend in portrait and close-up photography? All of those effects come from nature, leverage light, and suggest that there’s more happening behind the scene. This layer enlargement with a sort of “natural virtual” light reflection is that the essence of prism light overlays.
Tumblr media
Nature remastered: a futuristic trend
Many styles we have seen trending within the previous couple of months, including alchemy, well-being, spirituality, and self-care, have one thing in common: an adaptation and "digitization" of nature. Organic patterns, sustainable materials, and natural elements are the foremost influential design elements this year consistent with SNOW and Pan tone. Raw materials, surfaces, and structures like fungus, mold, bark, and sponges are redefining graphic designing patterns and galvanizing color schemes. the style and graphic design industries are applying these organic elements in response to the heightened demand for self-care and well being brands.
Tumblr media
How to recreate this vibrant look
Everyone remembers the dark, mystic atmosphere in Pink Floyd's cover artwork for “The Dark Side of the Moon”. Prism light reflections can evoke both mystery and heat . Throughout this tutorial, I'll explain the way to achieve this look with the “Sun Catcher – Animated Crystal Light Reflection” toolkit. To achieve this trending light overlay look you will only need Photoshop or video software like Premiere Pro, Final Cut, or Davinci Resolve (which is free ).
Tumblr media
You only got to drag the video effect into your favorite design app and play with the layer blending modes. If you're using Photoshop, "Lighten", "Screen", and "Color" will offer you the foremost natural and authentic sun reflection look.
Elevating artwork with natural overlays
Light, shadows, and reflections add an authentic look to otherwise clean graphics or motion clips, blurring the border between digital art and nature. These sorts of effects are like coincidence. Each moment is exclusive and ephemeral. There's also a meditative character to the present look: bright light has always been related to purity and well-being.
The convergence of natural and artificial
The moment when natural elements are emphasized by artificial objects describes the SunCatcher collection. Suncatchers are made from glass and break the sunshine in an unnatural way that doesn't exist in real world . this type of sunshine doesn't come from nature. it's more an adaption of nature, uncontrolled, and reflecting the instant . Exactly this characteristic makes the instant unique and real.
Tumblr media
Where does the sunshine & shadow trend come from?
Reflecting and breaking light have always been popular creative techniques to feature depth to scenes and objects. The film era within the mid-1960s established the lens flare as a natural tool to make depth. it had been not seen as a failure in film. Creative professionals started using it as a tool to feature an authentic and natural character to their scenes. In digital design, the simulation of reality is usually an enormous concern. is that this image smooth and natural-looking or does it look fake? This effect may be a visual solution to feature warmth to all or any sorts of indoor and outdoor settings. History repeats itself. We sleep in a world branded through perfectly planned social media posts, philosophically like those indoor studios within the film industry's past. Nothing happens by coincidence and smart tools, apps, and gadgets make it possible to erase every tiny imperfection. Books and magazines do not have to be printed to be shown during a commercial.
Cosmetics do not have to exist physically to make a three-dimensional, realistic preview of what they'd appear as if . Mockups are so neat lately , it's hard to acknowledge if we're watching a true product or a rendered image. As a designer, i really like the chances mockups give us. Visualizing a sensible design is an incredibly effective tool for client communication, but within the long-term this generated reality creates the wish for more realness and authenticity.

Pros and Cons of Digital Marketing
Tumblr media
Social media marketing is one of the fastest changing areas of marketing the world has ever seen. The methods used and developed within social media marketing have come a very long way in the past few years. It’s also created serious opportunities for businesses around the world, but there are certain aspects you have to be aware of when you make use of social media marketing for business.
Social media is the fastest (real-time) advertising and tracking marketing mediums there is available. Just as there are advantages for marketing on this medium, there are disadvantages that you as the business owner and you as the marketer (or maybe you are running a small business and are both) should be aware of and not only take notice, but know and understand how it can influence your business in all aspects positively and or negatively.
Traditional & Digital Marketing
To clarify the terms and jump into the nitty-gritty of the subject, traditional marketing covers anything from printed newspapers and magazines to radio, television, billboards, business cards and flyers. Technically you could also include the door-to-door marketing and telesales in the more traditional forms of marketing.
Digital marketing, on the other hand, refers to the “representation of a brand online and the optimisation of its presence to achieve goals.” This can be achieved through websites, SEO, social media, content marketing, banner and Google ads, video marketing and more.
Best PSD Mockups
Pros of Digital Marketing
Less expensive to produce: To reach 2000 people on Facebook could cost you €/£/$75 while running an ad in a magazine could easily bring the bill to €/£/$500.
Real-time results: With the likes of Facebook and Instagram Insights or Google Analytics, you can have a real-time view of what’s working and what isn’t at the touch of a button.
Increased brand awareness: Things like running a website or having a Facebook page, they don’t have to cost a fortune. Plus, they’re constant ‘ads’ in a way. In the older days, you’d advertise your business on the side column of a newspaper and hope that someone would read the advertisements.
Greater potential exposure: Through social shares and email, content referring to your salon or spa can reach an incredibly bigger audience – would your local flyer end up in China?
Higher engagement: People can interact with the ads and promotions, whereas on paper, your target audience is really that, just an audience. Additionally, with online marketing, people can choose how they want to receive your content (video, blog, podcast, etc.)
Easier to refine a strategy: If you know what isn’t working in your approach in real-time, it’s much easier to improve or slightly tweak it.
Cons of Digital Marketing
Digital Marketing Is Time-Consuming: Digital marketing may not cost you so much when you look at it from the financial side, but when it comes to time, it consumes a tremendous amount of time. What is saved from the monetary aspect is reinvested in additional time. The majority of digital marketers spend between 6-11 hours every day online.
Exposure To Negative Public Reaction: When you are promoting your good or service online you have to prepare yourself for negative feedback and comments from different quarters. A business with an online presence, particularly on social media, opens itself up to negative reactions. Some of these reactions will come from people who have been genuinely hurt by your good or service, but some will come from spammers, scammers and internet trolls who just think it is fun to cause you heartache or bring your brand down.
It Can Take Control Out Of Your Hand: This point is two sides. Sometimes it could be a good thing as your campaign can go viral giving tremendous exposure to your brand. On the other hand, it can be a bad thing when someone takes what you have published and write a negative report about it, which then goes viral. There would be no way to stop the backlash. One minute you are a good business owner loved by his community, next you are a worldwide pariah.
Difficulty In Measuring Return On Investment : Very few digital marketers can reliably measure their return on investment for their marketing effort. Some marketers confess that they are not sure if they are measuring their ROI metrics correctly while some do not even know how to measure their return on investment. And no form of marketing is 100% quantifiable either.
Digital Marketing Judges On First Impression: Digital marketing judges on first impression. Therefore your first impression must be as professional as possible. If the first impression customers have about your brand is a negative one, then you may have lost them completely. For any product that you may be offering they are several other companies offering the same or something similar. If you fail to put a good foot forward these customers will go to your competitors who are readily available to receive them.

Meanwhile this week...
An overview of warm-up drawings and other shenanigans I made this week (May 23), unrelated to my current illustration commission (which I can’t show). Usually I share these on Instagram Stories but why not round them up here in a blog post?
Despite not using a physical sketchbook paper, these are my sketches, they are random in the subject and the result of having the need to either draw because I’m inspired or draw because I’m not inspired and still need to warm up (hand and brain). Sometimes they spark ideas for a full personal project that I will revisit later (when I have the time), but I love sketching freely without any goals behind it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In chronological order from oldest to most recent: two abstract posters, an inky pear, one raddish, a fan-art drawing about the movie Tremors (1990), and a flower pattern.
Speaking of patterns, last month, after finishing a book commission I managed to participate in Victoria Johnson’s course Create Collections. It was on my wish list for years and it didn’t disappoint, I loved the assignments and learned a ton. I didn’t complete my project (yet) but now I have the confidence to create a collection if I want to. Here are my two birds and a coordinate pattern I did for the course.
Tumblr media
This week I finished a portrait of Yayoi Kusama, a portfolio piece, for a Magazine cover (this is a case study mockup and not a real commission), because I would love to do more editorial illustrations and famous portraits in this style.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, I am keeping busy with my current book commission and washing all my groceries when I get home (don’t message me, it gives me peace of mind). I’ve been home since March 12, just going out every 2 weeks to go to the supermarket. My body is really complaining about it (I’m not young anymore?) so I’m going out to a nearby park to walk and exercise now (with a mask on of course). Everything else I’m still not mentally prepared to do, even though I miss my old routine and friends.
Stay safe if you can!

BEY-ONE-GET-ONCE-FREE
ALBUM COVER WORKSHOP
PROJECT PARTNER: LARRY
RESEARCH POWERPOINT
PRESENTATION POWERPOINT
How do you make a queen more iconic than she already is? You demonstrate that she’s not perfect, and accidentally make everyone think she’s even more perfect by doing so.
The worst thing you can do a student is give them a list of phrases that get their mind racing with the obvious and then tell them they can’t do the obvious - it’s basically torture and a breach of safeguarding. It becomes especially hard when you’re given an artist that’s been around since before Youtube was a thing and you’d watch Destiny’s Child music videos on the TV in your neighbours/best friends living room and ‘bagsie’ outfits that you’d pretend to wear when you adopted famous singer personas and danced on top of an abandoned washing machine in the alley behind your house. She’s been there, done that, and literally got the t-shirt (for sale on her website).
It becomes even harder when her interviews are sparse and in-between because she’s so famous that so many people want to interview her that she doesn’t do it anymore. And then becomes even HARDER when there’s so many perceptions of Beyonce already in the world that a million things come to mind that you could do but none of them are what you SHOULD do because you thought of them before you could even google her name.
Scrounging for information on Beyonce that wasn’t world knowledge was near impossible, so we had to take a different approach - look for the information that’s world knowledge, and then look for the aspect of it she hasn’t put on an album cover yet. This made the task significantly easier due to the fact that her album covers kind of suck (sorry Beyonce) as they’re just her face over and over again, because who needs anything else when even an outline of her nose is so recognisable people will be it thrice over.
Tumblr media
Whilst pretty and some really sexy photography, Beyonce’s album covers thus far are nothing particularly outstanding or special - it’s just her, because she sells, but it’s her millions of personas each specially altered for the type of music she’s producing in that instance. So is it really her? This trail of thinking - who IS Beyonce - led us to research into challenging the perception of her unchanging sex appeal, and the impact this notion of her has had on the Queen herself.
Tumblr media
Our research led us to a rare interview that she’s had with Vogue following her recent birth of her twins - she talks about the societal pressure she felt to get back into shape, and get rid of her Mum Body immediately post surgery, and the conclusion she’s come to regarding her body. She’s embracing it, even if the results of her pregnancy leave her different to the perception the world has of the amazingly perfectly sexy Beyonce.
Tumblr media
Choosing the phrase became a toss-up between two - Everything Must Go, and Buy One Get One Free.
‘Buy One Get One Free’ -
INSIGHT: ‘Buy motherhood, get the body free.’
Highlighting the bodily changes women face when going through pregnancy, and how the choice to have a baby comes with some baggage (literally).
‘Everything Must Go’ -
INSIGHT: ‘Take away the aesthetic, leave us only with the necessary.’
Viewing the body in it’s most natural state and demonstrating what a real body looks like, without the changes society imposes.
To decide between both these ideas, we initially explored imagery pertaining to both, looking at examples of post-partum bodies, be it the excess skin after a natural birth or the scars from C-sections. One reference we used within our research is an instagram mum who photographs herself in her natural mothering environment, not only showing the pretty pregnancy photos and the newborn pictures, but the actual duty of care that goes into raising a child, as well as the toll it takes on her; the painful breastfeeding, the stretchmarks, etc.
This included one particular image of the father caring for the child with the mother in the background sporting a rather fetching nappy, and bringing to light one of the less favourable after-care processes of having a baby - the continued bleeding, and sometimes the really nasty shits.
https://docdro.id/ltHGFfe <-- Research Imagery
Motherhood, tis a beautiful thing.
ARTIST RESEARCH
Before settling on a phrase, we conducted further research, looking at magazines and photographers and artists on instagram to inform the creative direction possibilities - as both our ideas were similar in initial research, we thought that looking at the creative possibilities out there could help us determine which was the most exciting route to take that still retained our insights garnered from our research.
We looked at many artists (which you can see HERE), but Larry referenced this one particular artist who’s aesthetic not only linked to some of Beyonce’s previous work, but also promoted the idea of idealising the human body, with posing and styling that could easily be adapted to extenuate the body of a pregnant or post-partum woman.
The imagery is beautifully edited, shot and styled in a manner that denotes an almost historical oil painting, looking at women as a subject to be studied and carefully crafted. The nudity is also tasteful in how it’s handled, not sexualising, but rather glorifying the body. The historical aesthetic is something we further linked back to our insights about loving the natural body, as the notion of beauty is always shifting, and in a lot of old artwork you see women depicted to be heavier set, with tummy rolls and skin dimples - we saw this imagery as taking us back to an era where what women try to hide now was once what was found to be most beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The use of lingerie in some of the imagery also still refers to Beyonce’s reputation - she’s still sexy, even as a mother, she’s just essentially now a MILF.
Following the conclusion of our research, we decided to go with ‘Buy One Get One Free’ as our route, as it was the phrase that we could most easily argue our creative proposition for, and justify it the best through our artist imagery and previous research into Beyonce and motherhood.
FURTHER REFERENCE POINTS
When speaking to Steve, he pointed us in the direction of a music video by Jay Z and Beyonce that took place in the Louvre, merging our concept of historical imagery and Beyonce’s beauty into one reference point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This reminded me Vogue’s video for the Met Gala in 2018, Heavenly Bodies, which was also filmed in an art gallery, capturing the religion inspired attire of the celebrities cast against the imagery from which the designers drew their inspiration, and further providing reference for possible styling for our own outcomes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOCKUPS
We used collage to mockup our idea, and create a rough visual to help ourselves understand the direction our photography would go by splicing the reference imagery of pregnancy and post-partum onto the artist imagery that we found to be the focal point of our creative direction.
https://docdro.id/ePr0e5n <--- COLLAGES
These images are intended to be a guideline for the posing and styling of any possible imagery we produce, roughly made as a first visual in our process. However the feedback from Steve and Derek was that the imagery is rather garish and grotesque, so when mocked up in Photoshop it shouldn’t be as jagged, and should be handled more delicately to really encapsulate the idea of beautifying these traits.
LARRY’S COVER
Larry took charge of the album cover, getting the all clear from Steve to feature Beyonce despite the initial rules of the brief. Larry’s cover attempted to merge Beyonce during her pregnancy with the oil painting-esque background of the reference imagery.
Tumblr media
Though no typography has been implemented yet, the decision was collaboratively made to use a modern font as opposed to an in-era font to provide contrast between the historical referencing and the modern age the imagery was produced in - by using a modern font, you are bringing history to the present, and bringing back the beauty standards that were lost. This isn’t in the past, it’s the future, it’s the now, and the typography would be used to demonstrate this.
DEVELOPMENT OF COVER
Following our feedback from our formative assessment, me and Larry both worked on addition covers for this project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We worked on these individually - here is my two initial mockups, the latter one I went on to develop. The text was ugly, to be blunt, and read like the memed door from The Walking Dead of ‘Don’t Dead Open Inside’, instead of ‘Don’t Open, Dead Inside’. The fix this, I reorganised the lettering as shown below:
Tumblr media
I then altered the placement of the text so it more closely aligned with the edges of the album.
Tumblr media
Following these adjustments, I pictures the album cover in situ by editing it onto a sleeve:
Tumblr media
Larry also independently developed a new cover of his own:

How audience insights can improve your campaign’s bottom line
30-second summary:
Cross-reference what businesses think their target audience is versus their current reality through Google Analytics .
Create mock-up personas that you can target your campaigns towards.
Identify key outlets and niches for where your audience consumes media beyond the narrow focus of the business.
Blueclaw’s Online PR Campaign Manager shines a light on how audience insights can catalyze your campaign results for good.
When we build marketing campaigns, we use a number of metrics to measure success, from the extent of coverage and links to the shift in keyword rankings in the SERPs. However, this ultimately glosses over the real purpose of any campaign – how it improves the bottom line.
Again, this can be interpreted in a myriad of ways from CTR to sales. In this case, we’re going to focus on how getting the campaign in front of the right audience is an important piece of the puzzle in determining success.
1. Identifying your audience
When identifying your audience, there should be a two-pronged approach. Firstly, there is the audience, or customer, as identified by the brand. As in any business, the brand will have spotted an opportunity in the market and target their products towards that audience. However, this does not necessarily marry with whom their audience ends up being online.
This can be due to the fact that clientele has changed since the business’s inception while the product has not, or it can be that the strategy is not targeted enough. So the best way to identify the audience is to look at the available data to create a mockup of who you should be marketing towards.
The Google Analytics way
One way to do this is, of course, through Google Analytics. Through GA you can go to audiences and filter through to create a picture of where the user is coming from. Their age, gender, and location can all help to identify the nature of your campaign, media targets, etc., as well as helping your client adapt their own messaging and better target their core customers.
The manual way
Another way to identify the audience is a little more manual. Does the client have email newsletters or other databases of leads? Can you sort through to help build some mock-up personas that can help tailor your own marketing efforts? Use all that is available (and that your client is willing to share) in order to ideate and build campaigns that will lead to those conversions.
2. Targeting that audience
We’d all love for content to go viral. But sometimes, no matter the number of links generated, you still have missed a trick. A campaign always needs to make sense for a brand’s messaging as well as have an element of making it newsworthy. How else would you get links?
And while we answer many of these questions, we may not always take a very focused approach to outreach in the hope of hitting those link/coverage KPIs. Sometimes we put too much emphasis on the quantity versus the quality of those links.
Example one: Coverage choices
For instance, a link in a trades magazine could mean exponentially more to a client than if they were to get massive coverage (without a link) in a national newspaper. Why? Because at that particular moment in time, your campaign has attracted the attention of the right audience and is more likely to generate a lead or revenue than that one piece of coverage in a national paper.
Example two: Hazy messaging
Or as another example, in the past year, I’ve worked on a couple of campaigns that went viral and gained links internationally. Amazing, right? Yes, but how did it actually improve the bottom line? Well, in the case of one campaign. Not at all. The reasons for that were two-fold, the messaging was a little hazy for the target audience and the target market didn’t really even cover the story. While the international coverage wasn’t anything to sniff at with the likes of GQ, The Daily Express, and more covering the story, it failed to get traction in the US.
The other campaign, Film Franchise Showdown, the messaging was better because it targeted the correct audience. For an iGaming client, the audience will invariably skew male and younger, but not too young. The piece would appeal to that audience in other areas where they consume their news. With coverage in not only national newspapers but also places of entertainment like Comicbook.com and Screen Rant, we’ve still managed to get to them even if the location metric is still something we could improve on.
In both of these examples, the biggest takeaway was the value of targeting the right locations versus the value of wide appeal. If your message falls upon deaf ears and doesn’t improve visibility and sessions, then you’re obviously missing a trick.
3. Finding where your audience lives
We’ve mentioned some metrics that you can use to target and identify the audience, but that misses one more element. Where does that audience live? What sort of media do they consume? It’s important to attribute characteristics to the audience you have in mind?
In building new campaigns, you’re not only thinking about creating something new and newsworthy, but also wondering if it appeals to the customer. Selling software to a CEO or decision-maker of a business is much different from selling software to the average individual looking for something of personal use. Where they consume their news will also differ and you want to make sure that you can reach the right customer, not just any customer.
So rather than a blanket approach to an outreach where anyone who covers tech is included, fine-tune that media-list. And even before you get to that point, what about the actual crux of the idea? Can you be more light-hearted to appeal to a wide audience? If you’re going after the average Joe to download your app, what are some of his interests that are adjacent to your product but not on the nose? Can you explore other niches and angles within that idea? Are these other niches areas where your customer can still be found?
Using tools like Facebook Audiences, BuzzSumo, Ahrefs, and Majestic, you can further identify if your niches and target media is valid and even find more targets to add to your list. You can refine the demographics of your audience to make sure they get your message. You can’t attract customers if they don’t see your client, right? Get your client in front of their customers and you’ll see the uplift soon enough.
What’s next
Once you’ve highlighted the needs of your audience and where you can find them, you’ll be able to develop content marketing strategies that not only appeal to them but that will also deliver the conversions necessary for the business. Most importantly, you will have the data not only back up the strategy, but also a metric to follow moving forward to see the impact of your messaging.

How to land a career in UX design with zero qualifications
In the past three months, I’ve had a few people ask me about how I landed a job in UX design without having any relevant experience under my belt.
“How did you get into UX without a design degree?”
“What did you do to learn how to become a UX designer?”
“What advice would you give to someone looking to transition into UX design?”
Many people would believe that the immediate answer to this is to complete an intensive bootcamp at General Assembly or Academy Xi. Whilst I’ve heard that they are a great way to cover the foundations, the reality is that there is more to just completing a course in order for you to get a job. As a graduate who had just completed a four year university degree, I was hesitant to invest more of my time and money into yet another intensive course; so I sought for an alternative way to get my foot into the door.
Three months after switching into a UX design role within the same company, I realised that a formal certification was not necessarily a prerequisite to getting a job in UX or even to being successful in this field. In fact, there are many ways in which you can teach yourself these skills, some of which I’ve shared with you below.
What do I need to know?
To know where to begin, set yourself a goal to be achieved within a given timeframe. For instance, if your goal is to become a UX designer in the next six months, you could look at job descriptions on sites such as Linkedin, Indeed and Seek to get an understanding of what is required from you. However, you’ll quickly find that it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important, so it’s useful to frame these key skills and tasks into a design process such as this:
Tumblr media
Empathise. As an advocate of your users, you must be able to put yourself in their shoes. Research tasks include conducting interviews, surveys, observatory studies and focus group sessions to understand your users’ behaviours, needs and goals. You should create user personas to understand the types of people experiencing the problem, user stories to understand how and why a user is performing a task, and user flows in order to understand the steps a user takes to achieve a certain goal.
Define. Being able to identify and prioritise critical issues helps to define the scope of the project and know where to focus on to deliver the highest impact to your users. A UX designer must work in collaboration with product managers and engineers to gather and evaluate user requirements.
Ideate. As a designer, you should be comfortable with visualising and sketching ideas on paper. This involves translating concepts into user flows, wireframes and low-fidelity mockups that lead to intuitive user experiences. You should familiarise yourself with applications such as Balsamiq, which is commonly used for rapid wire-framing and getting quick feedback.
Design and prototype. Experience with industry standard UX design tools such as Sketch, InVision, and the Creative Cloud (e.g. Photoshop and Illustrator) are a must for any UX designer. Strength in UI and visual design including an understanding of colour composition, space and visual hierarchy is also key to this role. Additionally, you should also know how to design for responsive web in order to cater for various screen sizes and resolutions.
Validate. Conducting usability testing is important to getting feedback on your prototype before it goes into development. It’s essential to work with engineers to understand whether your designs can be implemented from a technical perspective. Knowing how to analyse user data is also key to this role as it gives you an understanding of the performance of your designs and should effectively drive the decisions you make as a UX designer.
Finally, it’s worth noting that UX designers do not operate in silos. They work closely with many key people and teams within the organisation including users, stakeholders, product and engineers. Bear in mind that there will be times when you will come across conflicting perspectives, so it’s important to know when to pick your battles and let the data speak for itself. Knowing how to present and speak confidently to your audiences can help to avoid communication pitfalls and make a positive impact.
What do I need to do?
Now that you know what is expected of a UX designer, think about the ways in which you can acquire and practise those skills. A framework which I’ve found extremely useful for self development that extends beyond UX and applies to anyone looking to advance their career, is what I like to call the Learning Framework. The Learning Framework is comprised of three components:
Tumblr media
Exposure. If you’re new to the field, start by soaking in as much information as needed to understand what the career is about and the types of things you’d be getting yourself into if you were to pursue this path. You can achieve this by reading books, watching videos, attending events or even just by talking to people in the industry.
Experience. Practise, practise, practise. Start a project, write a blog, get experience or participate in a hackathon. Do something that requires you to apply what you’ve learnt in theory.
Credibility. Build a portfolio, get a certification, become a freelancer or apply for a job. Work towards something that will give you some level of credibility to prove to others that you’ve successfully consolidated your theoretical knowledge and practical experiences.
Note that these three categories are not mutually exclusive; nor are they meant to be structured in chronological order. This process should be continual and iterative overtime as you accumulate more knowledge and experiences, and progress onto the next level of your career.
Get Exposure: Read, Listen, Watch and Learn
Read about it. Some examples of popular publications that teach you about the latest industry practices and techniques include UX Planet, Smashing Magazine, UX stack exchange, and the UX collective. These blogs and forums are extremely useful when it comes to getting a second opinion on what the best UX practices are to inform your decision making.
Get inspired. Dribbble, Muzli and Behance are just some examples of inspiring sites that showcase the works and portfolios of other designers. I’ve learnt a lot just by studying these pieces and applying the concepts to my own work.
Attend events: What better way to meet other people than by going to a Meetup? My first UX design meetup experience was with Sydney UI/UX meetups, where I got to connect with like-minded individuals and listen to the advice that professionals would give to budding UX designers. Other awesome events that you should look into include those organised by Sydney Designers and Academy Xi.
Talk to people. My first exposure to the concept of UX design was actually just by talking to people. By observing what they did and asking them questions about their job, I realised that this was an area that interested me most. It’s also worth checking out The Designership, which is an awesome slack group that enables you to reach out to an online community for questions and support.
Find a mentor. A mentor is another good way to learn things you wouldn’t normally find in books or courses. I’m still seeking a mentor in UX design but I believe that having a mentor will help you grow faster in your role and provide relevant support and guidance to help you succeed.
Get Experience: Action, Practise and Perfect
Participate in-person. I would highly recommend that you participate in a free six week program called Level Up Build, run by the industry leader Thoughtworks. This program gives you the opportunity to work with a cross functional team in an Agile environment. Hackathons organised by groups like Girl Geek Sydney are also usually free and a great way to learn and collaborate with other people to solve problems and pitch ideas. You can find a full list of hackathons on sites such as Eventbrite, Hackathons Australia and the Disruptor’s handbook.
Start a project. Projects are probably one of the best ways to apply what you’ve learnt in theory to the real world. A side startup that I’m currently involved in called SEALADDER served to be a huge boost to getting my foot into the door. The startup aims to help people like yourself, gain visibility on the skills that they need to be successful in their career and the things that they need to do in order to achieve their goals. If you don’t have an idea for a project, another way in which you can get experience is by looking at existing websites and finding ways to improve the UX by redesigning the page.
Experiment with tools. For rapid wire-framing, learn how to use Balsamiq. When it comes to creating high fidelity mockups, Sketch app is an industry standard toolkit, so familiarise yourself with this application. It’s worth noting that buying a Sketch license only costs $99 USD upfront and includes a year’s worth of updates. Sketch also provides great templates and resources to help you get started. If you’re looking for something free, Figma and Adobe XD are new but good alternatives to Sketch. If you’re keen to understand design from a front end developer’s perspective, I would highly recommend looking into Webflow. Prototyping tools that you should also be familiar with include InVision and Marvel app. For component interactions, reference to Material Design as this is commonly used as an industry standard.
Get work experience. Some examples of sites that offer internship opportunities to students include Hatch and Ribit. Note that some companies may not always publicly list their openings, so it’s worth approaching them directly as it helps to establish a connection and notify employers early on that you’re interested in a role.
Document your learnings. As you continue to learn and acquire new experiences, it’s also important to document what you’ve learnt so that you don’t forget about it. Write it down in a blog or keep a journal handy so that you can collect your thoughts and refer to it as you continue to develop.
Get Credibility: Test, Earn and Qualify
Build a portfolio. Now that you’ve got some experience, start to build out a portfolio. Look at the portfolios of UX designers from top companies on Bestfolios for inspiration and identify what makes a good portfolio stand out against others. Some examples of my favourite portfolios are created by Simon Pan, Hiroo Aoyama, Kejia Shao, and Amruta Buge.
Do freelancing or contract work. Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer are some examples of platforms where you can build brand credibility by working for clients as a freelancer or contractor. If you don’t feel confident with working for a paid client, then look at websites like Skills for Change where you can use your skills to help charities and non profit organisations with projects online.
Get a certification. While I mentioned earlier in this article that a certification is not necessarily a prerequisite to getting a job in this industry, it’s certainly a good way to learn UX in a structured classroom environment. If you’re looking for in-person courses, General Assembly offers a 10 week immersive course whereas Academy Xi offers various 1 day to 10 week options. Alternatively, you can look to learn online through sites such as Udemy, Coursera, and Skillshare. I would recommend having a look at this comprehensive list written by UX Planet on the various types of courses you can take to learn UX.
Evaluate yourself. It may be difficult to assess your own skills, so asking a mentor or someone in the industry to review your resume and portfolio will help to identify where your strengths and weaknesses lie. It’s also handy to compare your current skills and experiences to the requirements listed on the job description to see how you stack up.
Apply for a full-time job. Now that you have accumulated a list of experiences and learnings, it’s time to apply for a job. Don’t let the minimum years of experience requirement get in the way of applying for the role as age is not always the determining factor of talent and potential. Focus on communicating your best projects and the process that you followed to solve problems. Don’t worry if you haven’t ticked all the boxes - your passion and willingness to learn should shine through your work!
What should I keep in mind?
Focus on developing your skills, not your job title.
Your job will change in the future, so learn to adapt to new and emerging trends in the market. UX design was not a thing when I was at university, so don’t bet that it’s here to stay. The skills that I had acquired from when I was an auditor to digital marketer has led me to where I am now; and has in fact equipped me with the skills to inform what I currently do in my UX role.
Don’t stick to a plan; stick to a goal.
Always have a beacon of light that serves a higher purpose. Your plan today is probably not the same as it was five years ago, nor will it ever be stagnant going forward. So find out what it is that you want to do as a lifelong goal; whether that’s to help other people achieve their goals or to create products for a better future. You might not know what it is now, but your experiences overtime will shape and inform your understanding.
If you don’t like where you are, then do something about it.
There have been too many times where I’ve heard people complain about how they hate their job or how they wish they could quit sooner. In all honesty, I was once in that position too. Understandably, it’s hard to break out of the mentality that “there will never be a better opportunity after this” or that “it’d be pointless to leave now”. It’s okay to feel that way but don’t let it become an unhealthy blocker that stops you from pursuing what you really want to do. Remember, change won’t happen until you do.
Don’t give up! Learning takes time.
You’re not going to achieve everything in one go, so set yourself some goals that can be achieved within a reasonable time frame. If you’re currently unemployed and feeling disheartened, don’t give up! Use this time to invest in yourself and fill in the gaps of what you currently don’t know. Continue to build up your portfolio with new experiences using the Learning Framework and check in with a mentor or a friend to keep you on track. Good luck! :)
Thanks for reading! If you would like to share your design resources or personal stories of how you transitioned into UX, please comment below! I’m also seeking a mentor in UX/Product Design who is based in Sydney, so if you’d like to have a chat with me, feel free to connect on Linkedin.
