Let’s talk about Zoro! Looking at his childhood, it’s safe to say he grew up alone. We don’t know much about his past, other that he wanted to be a swordsman and lost his childhood friend and rival. So most of this is going off of what I THINK happened, so take it with a grain of salt lol! 

I think Zoro has been alone for quite some time, maybe even starting from birth, he could have been in an orphanage and never gained the parental love he needed to survive. So with that in mind, I am once again using Erik Erikson and his beautiful mind. From birth to 18 months, children learn how to trust and what is safe in the world. I believe that sometime during his life, this is where Zoro experience some untrustworthy experiences. We see that Zoro truly only trusts Luffy and this was after Luffy saved his life. Before this, Zoro didn’t trust anyone and struggled making relationships. This will affect him in a romantic relationship too! He won’t trust you at first and might be a bit cold, don’t take it personal, he learned as a child that this is how he needs to survive! 

He’s a very standoffish man and his instinct is to keep people at a distance. This is completely normal and understandable for a person who never learned to trust properly. Give him a lot of time to get used to you and he will open up. Zoro needs someone who is more extroverted, similar to Luffy. He doesn’t want to know you are hiding secrets from him and wants to know it all for the safety of his own wellbeing. 

Similar to Law and Ace, it will take a long time before he opens up, but once he does you will see a caring person who is hurt and scared of the big world. This explains also why he feels the need to be the strongest swordsman! He is weak emotionally, but if he is strong physically, no one can hurt him again, at least that’s what his inner child believes. Let his inner world see your vulnerabilities and weaknesses, to see that it’s okay to be scared and nothing will hurt him again!

Zoro needs to learn that not everyone is out to hurt him (at least in the real world) and even if they do happen to hurt him, he will be okay both physically and emotionally. 

The type that once he is hurt emotionally will break down. He hides behind his tough exterior and strong physical strength. Even if you didn’t mean to hurt his feelings, he will take it extremely personal and would shut down around you. It will take a good time for him to open up with you on his feelings again, and he will always remember what you said no matter how long time passes.

Until you can gain his trust completely, watch what you say around him. Behind that mask is a scared child who is afraid of the big bad world due to being hurt before. But once you gain his trust, you have yourself a loyal soldier who will die for your very being!

Ace has a horrible self esteem, so he struggles with opening up to others and letting them see his weak points. He has terrible abandonment issues and is always worried that if he shows any weakness or negative emotions he will be left. He was treated as a monster as a child and it shows in his adulthood as well. Deep down under that quiet exterior is a crying child that just wants to be loved. 

I love Erik Erikson, so we will be using him once again! Most of Ace’s trauma takes place at ages 5-12, so lets take a look what this means! From ages 3-5 a child learns about guilt vs initiative, they start to take control of little things in life and build confidence as adults cheer them on for making smart choices. If a child doesn’t get to experience learning control or gets negative backlash they begin to feel guilt, and as adults they struggle with making choices without feeling guilty. We don’t know much about Ace’s childhood before meeting Luffy, but we can see in his adulthood this time wasn’t an easy passing for him. 

The next stage is industry vs inferiority, this is the BIGGEST part of Ace’s character. During this time a child learns how to cope with social interactions, if failed they gain inferiority to others and have a bad habit of comparing themselves. We see this when Ace thinks Luffy would rather have Sabo than him, and again when he doesn’t open up to the Whitebeard pirates at first. 

I also believe Ace was so accepting of his execution because he didn’t feel he was worthy of living. He only made a move to protect Luffy the entire time, because Luffy was someone he felt deserved to live, again comparing himself to someone else. 

Taking this into consideration Ace will be a hard man to date. He will be jealous, but not state it out of guilt, sitting in his own self-hatred as he watches you talk with others, telling himself you are better off with them than him. He HATES that feeling, he wants your attention for himself 24/7 and can be extremely clingy. 

He can also be a bit manipulative with his words. Since he has both a guilt issue and a inferiority complex, he’s in pain a lot, and just like any other human, he sometimes wants you to feel his pain. It’s never intentional and he means well, but damn why do you get to laugh with that person? Isn’t he good enough?

Give him time to work through his anxieties and be patient, always take the extra time to reassure him that you love him and he’s the only one for you! Just like a new puppy, he will take a while to get accustomed to you and your needs, but will be the best, loyal puppy you could ever ask for~!
