by Matthew Littlefield | There is an old saying, “Misery loves company.” The person who lives in pain and misery will often seek to bring others down into their misery. Another similar saying could be, the wicked love to have accomplices, because those who engage in evil love to have the reassurance that others are engaging in the same evil as them…

The year was 1932. The setting, a hall occupied by the Philadelphia Grand Opera. The event: a ballet titled “H.P.” for “Horsepower,” a dance that hasn’t been replicated since — probably for good reason.
“H.P.” featured an array of agricultural products (bananas, tobacco) dancing onstage with a company of sailors, a siren and various gold and silver nuggets. An advance dispatch in the Philadelphia Inquirer promised 10 pineapples and as many dancing swordfish. If Carmen Miranda ever had a Marxist fever dream about the flow of commodities from the global South to the industrialized North, it might have resembled this ballet.
Overseeing choreography of this danse bizarre was ballerina Catherine Littlefield; Mexican composer Carlos Chávez crafted the score. Serving as co-creator as well as costume and set designer was none other than Diego Rivera.

Documentary/Book Post
Have you ever wondered how Pelé became Brazil’s greatest player ever? Me too! This is the exact question I had and I watched his Netflix documentary to find the answers. The documentary goes through his life starting at his childhood in Brazil. It talks of his father who was a soccer player for a club in Brazil. He was recruited to that same club and then eventually recruited to the national team at a very young age. The documentary gives good background knowledge on historical and political events that were going on in his home country. It shows how much of an influence he was on the people of Brazil. He gave them hope during difficult times. It also talks about his difficulties of losing the World Cup and the fear he had of losing again. This is something he overcame and eventually won three World Cup championships throughout his career.
The documentary answered the question I had at the beginning by simply showing his perseverance and hard work. As a soccer player, Pelé had the determination and drive to win and be great. He was so dedicated to the sport that he even mentions that all the political drama didn’t really have an affect on him as a player. The documentary did a great job at appealing to emotions and keeping the watchers intrigued with the music and showing clips of him playing. It wasn’t just a straight forward interview with him. They got the viewpoint of his teammates and coaches who all had good things to say about him. I would say there was slight bias because of this as they only interviewed people who liked him.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and learned some intimate details about his life outside of soccer as well as his career. Coming from something small and making something big for himself at a very young age. It was very inspirational to watch and I would highly recommend it to others. Although it did make me wonder why certain people didn’t like him such as one of his coaches who was fired.
Tumblr media
I also recently read a book called “Champions” By Bill Littlefield. The author is a former radio host who seems to take an interest in sports and writing books for young readers. It is a rather short book, but it caught my attention as it had a brief chapter about Pelé. I thought it would be another great source for my research to give me a little bit of information about him that may not have been in the documentary. Within the chapter there was a painting of Pelé that was done by Bernie Fuchs. This painting was a great addition to the book as it gives readers a face to relate the information to.
The chapter begins by talking about the dismay among him and his father that was caused by hearing that Brazil had lost the 1950 World Cup. It also describes that his mother, Celeste, was disappointed not because of the loss, but because him and his father loved the game so much that it brought them sadness. It talks of how she didn’t like that her son was following in his fathers footsteps with dreams of being a professional soccer player. The author does a great job depicting how poor Pelé’s family was by describing how he would play shoeless with his friends and be made fun of for it. Throughout the chapter his major achievements were mentioned just like in the documentary. Something that really stood out to me was that at the end the author mentions a deal that was made with the Pepsi-Cola Company. He quoted Pelé saying, “I won’t take your money for going to cocktail parties, but I’ll take the job if my part is to h help set up clinics to teach soccer to children.” I think this was a great quote that appeals to the readers emotions by showing the wholesomeness that was Pelé. Overall, I think it was a good source because it gave me a few more details and information about his life that I had not gotten from other sources. I also think it was informational without being difficult to read. It flowed throughout the story very nicely.

Players respond to the colorism in Genshin Impact
The creative choices made by the developers of Genshin Impact in regarding there newest addition to the in-game universe were not well received. In particular many players of color were frustrated at the perceived deception. As in other areas of life people of color(POC) have been fighting for accurate, well-rounded representation in media. Yet time and time again, what is shown is a mixed bag of good and bad elements or is out right offensive. The issue is compounded by other fans who support what the final product. This is where you start to run into to quote Bonilla Silva "racism without racists". Better known as "colorblind racism, it is an ideology people(usually white) will use to rationalize the various forms of racism and prejudice they use against minorities. The discourse between fans took place all over social media and while not all of the fans who defended the game developers were white the tactics used would make one question who is writing these responses. For example comments such as " A Chinese company can't be expected to cater to everybody" or "light -skinned characters sell better" to name a few. These statements are meant to invalidate or downplay the harm that centuries of discrimination have taken on minority communities and provides an excuse for the oppression of the dominant group. The second statement stood out me especially because here in America we have a unique relationship with "mixed-race" people. A community that was once seen as an antithesis to the myth of biologically separate race ideology have become an unwilling mascot racial unity. As such when a non-white racialize group is needed a biracial type character is brought into existence. This has become a way to avoid accusations of lackluster representation. The "one-drop" rule has taken on a new identity with these depictions. By making the characters slightly darker in a way that can be mistaken for a tan the company has willing chosen to downplay the real issues at hand. For the fans that see no issue with this have also for reasons of their own made the choice to ignore the problem and not hold the company accountable. To add insult to injury these same fans have lashed out against the fans who brought the problem to light in the first place. I will discuss this further in my next blog.

Digital Citizenship and Conflict: Social Media Governance
The omnipresence of social media and the ever-evolving landscape of networked digital communities has resulted in a unique online experience for the individual. But is it for better or worse?
Social media governance is a key element of digital citizenship, taking place on all levels of online activity, from macro to micro. The many positive affordances of social media and its ability to facilitate the connection of individuals and enable their contribution to society beyond traditional realms have unfortunately also resulted in the potential and means for conflict to occur online. State actors and governments, social media companies, educational institutions and moderators of independent online communities such as Facebook groups or discussion threads have all been forced to adapt with codes of online conduct and regulations to ensure digital citizenship is upheld, whilst still serving their own interests.
Tumblr media
Consequently, online harassment can be difficult to define and almost impossible to govern at all levels of internet usage. Referred to as “networked harassment”, Marwick and Caplan argue that new forms of cyberbullying including “doxing, revenge porn, social shaming and intimidation” were “pioneered” by members of an online controversy known as ‘Gamergate’ in 2014 (Marwick & Caplan, 2018). The high profile harassment that took place during the anti-feminist and right-wing campaign within the video gaming community have since been leveraged by other individuals and online communities, as well by governments and other state actors to enact similar forms of online abuse (Marwick & Caplan, 2018).
Tumblr media
Similarly, the term “gas-lighting” has become a key phrase in contemporary online culture, utilised as an umbrella for techniques of harassment that typically surround women being manipulated by their abuser. Members of #MeToo movement suffered online gaslighting when survivors stories were dismissed, and former president of the USA, Donald Trump, has been accused of gaslighting the American public through his claims of “fake news” (Gleeson, 2018).
Prior to the passing of The Online Safety Act 2021 which became part of Australian law in January 2022, there was only grey areas of law that could be utilised to protect individuals against online text and image abuse, as well as generally harmful online content. Nonetheless, cyberbullying “persists as a dominant category of digitally mediated violence”, and McCosker claims that the expectation of all online users to engage in digital citizenship is “aspirational” (McCosker, 2016). 40% of all internet users in America report having experienced a form of online harassment, and as the ubiquity of social media continues to extend, one can expect that online hate will only become more pervasive and refined in its nature (McCosker, 2016).

I really appreciate your posts about June and Luke's communication styles. Do you think June and Nick have better communication?
Yes and no, and that's mostly because the situations are different. Most of the time, they only have/had minutes together so they have to fit as much info as possible into few words. And Nick and June are also just more in tune with one another physically so they have a lot of nonverbal communication.
In the first season, their relationship was primarily June communicating with Nick, and Nick just absorbing it which is how it was in the book. Then we don't see any of their domestic conversations when June was in hiding in the Boston Globe, but we know they spent several nights together for 2 months.
There are instances in 2x06, 2x07, and 3x06 (these are just the ones off the top of my head) that show they can be very direct with each other while having brief conversations and come to solutions/get on the same page within just a few minutes.
I know that Lizzie and I think either Bruce Miller or Warren Littlefield have said that June and Nick are like a long distance relationship who barely get to see each other so when they do they sometimes don’t want to rock the boat with the heavy stuff and just want to enjoy each other’s company. Which I think is very accurate, and I think this is where their biggest communication problems lie.  During the 2 months at the Boston Globe, June didn't ask about Nick's past and he didn't disclose it, and it’s because when it comes to the real bad Gilead stuff they kind of have an unspoken agreement that “you’re going to have to do shitty things because it’s fucked up here let’s not waste time discussing it.” Which is fine for the short term when your meetings are few and far between, but for anything long term that could pose a problem.
For their meeting(s) next week... I don’t think Nick is going to tell June that he was the one who bombed Chicago. If he is going to be deployed again, got promoted, is married, is about to be married, or is moving to a different distract, etc, I don’t think he’ll tell her. And I don’t think June will talk about Luke, her testimony, yelling at Serena, or making it to Chicago. Because they’re just going to want to enjoy their rendezvous and talk about Hannah and most likely Holly.
So if June and Luke have consistent indirect communication about nearly everything that builds up, I think Nick and June’s communication problem is that they compartmentalize so much because of how little time they have that they border on almost being deceitful because of what they choose to omit. But then that ends up not mattering to them because they are always consistent about directly communicating their feelings for one another, so they are nearly always on the same page.
