Are There Objective Moral Facts?
Tumblr media
Lyx: Di ba kuya as Christians we believe na there are universal values/things that are inherently good? How do you usually justify it without using the religion card haha
Me: Tungkol sa existence ng objective moral values ba ang tanong mo? I think they are self-evident. Sabi mo nga, there are things that are “inherently good.” Even those who give lip service to relativism know this. Subukan mong nakawin ang wallet ng kaibigan mong relativist, at magagalit siya sa’yo. Kahit mga liberal activists na relativist pagdating sa sexual ethics are quite dogmatic against things like racism and homophobia. So it seems impossible to deny the existence of objective moral values.
Test yourself. Is rape sometimes good? Is torturing babies just for the fun of it morally right? These diagnostic questions will let you know if you are a moral realist or a Jeffrey Dahmer—kung kailangan mo ba ng philosophy lesson or ng psychological counseling.
Speaking of philosophy, moral realism is the majority position among moral philosophers today. Contemporary defenders of moral realism include philosophers like Nathan Nobis, David Enoch, Christian Coons, Michael Huemer, and Terence Cuneo.
Persuasive sa akin yung argument ni Terence Cuneo. Simple lang siya, and it’s in the form of a “companions in guilt argument.” The idea is this: There is this thing which you cherish. But if objective morality has to go, then you must also let go of this other thing which you cherish. For example, epistemic facts. Importante sa’yo ang epistemic facts, otherwise, why are we having this conversation?
But moral facts are like epistemic facts, argues Cuneo. So then:
If there are objective epistemic facts, then there are objective moral facts.
There are objective epistemic facts.
Therefore, there are objective moral facts—that is, moral realism is true.
Lyx: Can you expound more on the assertion “if there are objective epistemic facts, there are objective moral facts” kuya
Me: Moral facts are facts about what we ought to do from the perspective of morality, e.g., “You should donate money to the poor.” Epistemics facts are facts about what we ought to do from the perspective of knowledge and evidence, e.g., “You should believe only what is true or supported by the evidence.”
The fact that we’re having this conversation right now is indicative that you care about epistemic facts. You care about what counts as justified true belief. But kung babalikan mo yung definition na binigay ko above, moral facts are parallel to epistemic facts. Both are normative, that is, both contain the property of oughtness. And both are objective, that is, they’re independent of what you or I think.
Sa kanyang librong The Normative Web: A Defense of Moral Realism, Cuneo points out at least six more parallels between epistemic and moral facts. So whatever objection one might throw against moral facts, the same can be applied against so-called epistemic facts. But if that is the case, then why should we believe the claim that “Moral facts do not exist” or that “We are not justified in believing in Moral Realism,” *if* these are epistemic facts?
Lyx: Ahhh oki oki gets. Last na kuya, how would u differentiate “good” and “right.”
Me: Siguro I would adopt the distinction that William Lane Craig makes. Good/Bad, he says, are moral values. Right/Wrong, on the other hand, are moral duties. What’s the difference? Well, value has to do with worth, but duty has to do with obligation. Obviously, just because something is good, does not mean it is obligatory. For example, it might be good for me to become a lawyer, but I’m not morally obligated to become one. After all, it might also be good for me to become a pastor. It’s important to make this distinction because in seeking the best explanation for moral facts, the best explanation should be able to explain both.
Lyx: Would you say na what counts as good is subjective?
Me: No. Kaka-argue ko lang that objective moral values are objective. That is, they’re truth-value is independent of human opinion. For example, the laws of nature hold true whether we acknowledge them or not. Kapag tumalon ako mula sa isang gusali, babagsak pa rin ako kahit sabihin kong di ako naniniwala sa law of gravity. I believe the same is true about the laws of morality. For example, to say that the Holocaust was wrong is to say that it was wrong even though the Nazis who carried it out thought that it was right, and it would still be wrong even if the Nazis had won WWII and succeeded in brainwashing all of us, so that everybody believes that the Holocaust was right.

Calatagan Gaming!
Missed these peeps. Mikey and Pau were my elem and highschool classmates. Kian is Mike's girlfriend.
The place. Uhm, what can I say?!? It's good! Or maybe we were blessed to be on the perfect spot. Beach front under the tree. The people were all there taking selfies. Nakakaumay hahaha guess I was being a killjoy tita here. Pero grabe naman, why not enjoy the scene, the beach, the serene, the sunset! And some people offer you drinks even when you were just passing by. Parang fiesta! And we were about thousands siguro. The place is well-regulated and organized. Kudos people!
I love how spontaneous this trip was. Last minute. Fluid. Road trip. Camping. Great food. Super great! It's been a long time since I have a good, deep talk. Adulting is hitting us, bigtime! Reminiscing on how epic our high school was - from our failed grades in geometry to extended trigonometry class. Silly crushes and kilig moments. Our friends and how they were before and what happened now. They open up about failed relationship and finally I open up about my dirty laundry - the skeletons in my closet. Oh it feels liberating haha! Finally. I was heard. My version of the story is different from what they know. It's funny, hearing that story 😂.
Did I not say I got really drunk this entire trip? We started drinking once we set up and settle our camp which is 11:30am until four am the next day, drinking beer and rum and wine. Plus our campmate were an all-queer-slash-gay group and they were hitting on Mikey hahaha! Perks was they bought us more beer cuz we ran out after midnight. Yeah, good looks pay off! And who wouldn't remember John Terence Ibe? That frickin gay whose harassing everyone by this card game and how the party shouldn't be over by 3am because that's how he partied in manila blah blah and shits like that. I argued the hell out of him and guess what? Only Mikey calm him down. Again, good looks pay off! ✌️
The next morning we have to wake up really early cuz I have work. Yes, I'm kj like that. So to cure the hungover we went at the ever famous Leslie's Tagaytay and man, the bulalo is just sooo good! And the brewed coffee is to die for. The. Brewed. Coffee. Worth it kahit mejo pricey! 🤤
Sorry guys, I missed your last invite in Zambales. Bridesmaid duties! But I promise to be there next time cuz I missed you badly! Hopefully next time sumama na yung iba. Again, adulting won't make our schedules match. Hehe. I love yous!

Jail Time Ahead For Student Who Embarked On Campaign Of Cyberstalking Following Law School Rejection
Tumblr media
The University of Texas Law student, Ho Ka Terence Yung, who pleaded guilty to cyberstalking an alumni interviewer after he was rejected from Georgetown University Law Center, was sentenced to almost 4 years in prison on Wednesday. Yung was arrested during his 3L year at UT for an 18-month campaign of cyberstalking that a federal judge described as “a disturbing mix of violence and sexual degradation that actually resulted in complete strangers approaching the victim’s home.”
As reported by Law.com, Georgetown Law issued a statement that it “appreciates the diligent efforts” of the law enforcement in the case.
The actions of Yung took against the interviewer who dinged him are chilling:
[Yung] created personal ads online for the purpose of sending people with an interest in violent sexual activity to the victim’s house in the middle of the night, authorities said. He was successful in at least one instance. Police stopped a man responding to one of Yung’s ads outside the victim’s house on one occasion.
He also posted “violent and sadistic statements” about the victim online, prosecutors said in October, when Yung pleaded guilty. In one case, Yung posted statements falsely claiming that the Georgetown interviewer had been involved in abducting and raping an 8-year-old girl. He also circulated false information on the Internet implicating the victim in activities such as lynching and molestation.
As U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, David Weiss said last year, “The defendant’s conduct offers a disturbing example of the destructive potential of the Internet and social media.”

Published: June 04, 2019
OXON HILL, Md. (June 4, 2019) — Teofimo Lopez is one win away from a shot at fulfilling his world title destiny. Standing in his way is fellow unbeaten Masayoshi Nakatani, who is intent on spoiling his plans.   Lopez and Nakatani will lock horns in a 12-round IBF lightweight world title eliminator Friday, July 19 at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The Lopez-Nakatani winner will be the mandatory challenger for the victor of the June 28 ESPN-televised bout between IBF champion Richard Commey and Ray Beltran.   In the highly anticipated chief support bout — also a battle of unbeatens — Maxim “Mad Max” Dadashev will take on Puerto Rican puncher Subriel Matias in a 12-round IBF junior welterweight world title eliminator for the belt currently held by Josh Taylor.   Lopez-Nakatani and Dadashev-Matias will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+, the leading multi-sport streaming service, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The combatants in this special doubleheader have a combined 57-0 record with 47 knockouts.   The undercard, including the 10-round super featherweight contest between the unbeaten Erick De Leon and former world champion Jason Sosa, will stream on ESPN+ beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.   Promoted by Top Rank, tickets for this world championship event priced at $100, $75, $50 and $25 (not including applicable fees) go on sale Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m. ET and can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com or in person at the MGM National Harbor.   “I’m excited to come back, especially for my first headlining bout, one of many to come,” Lopez said. “After Nakatani, you will see me face the winner of Richard Commey and Ray Beltran. If you think you’ve seen it all, you haven’t. My goal is to be a worldwide star, and Nakatani is not going to stop me. Expect another badass knockout, and rest assured, I have something special planned for the celebration. For this fight, we’re doing a nine-week training camp, and I am going to be in the best shape of my career.   “The Takeover is coming July 19 to MGM National Harbor!”   “This fight is just a stop on the way to becoming world champion,” Nakatani said. “I hope all boxing fans in Japan and around the world will enjoy what I bring to the table.”   Lopez (13-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 4 by the IBF, was born in Brooklyn, raised in Florida, and represented his parents native Honduras at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The 21-year-old’s rise up the professional ranks has been meteoric, as he made his debut on a Manny Pacquiao undercard in November 2016 and was the consensus 2018 Prospect of the Year. In 2019, he’s graduated to contender status. He knocked out former world title challenger Diego Magdaleno in seven brutal rounds Feb. 2 in Frisco, Texas. Lopez returned April 20 as the pay-per-view co-feature to the Terence Crawford-Amir Khan bout at Madison Square Garden. He thrilled the hometown fans, knocking out two-time European lightweight champion Edis Tatli in five rounds.   Nakatani (18-0, 12 KOs), from Osaka, Japan, is ranked No. 3 by the IBF and has gone the 12-round distance five times. He has held the OBPF lightweight title since 2014 and has made 11 successful defenses of that belt. Nakatani has won four in a row via knockout, and against Lopez, he will be making his first ring appearance outside of Japan.   Dadashev (13-0, 11 KOs) is a three-year pro who has made a seamless transition to the pro game. A former amateur standout for his native Russia, he won a reported 281 bouts in the unpaid ranks before turning pro under the guidance of famed manager Egis Klimas. Dadashev holds victories over former world champions Antonio DeMarco and Darleys Perez and has won nine of his last ten by knockout. He made his 2019 debut March 23 in Costa Mesa, California, knocking out Ricky Sismundo in four rounds. Matias (13-0, 13 KOs), a southpaw from Fajardo, Puerto Rico, has blown through his competition with ease, as seven of his fights have ended in the first or second round. He made his American debut last October in New Orleans, blowing away former two-division world title challenger Fernando Saucedo in one round.   “It doesn’t matter who I fight or where I fight. I am looking forward to the opportunity in front of me,” Dadashev said. “Matias is a dangerous fighter, but I am ready for whatever he brings. I have fought every kind of style as an amateur and a professional, and all of my experiences have led me to this fight.”   Sosa (22-3-4, 15 KOs), from Camden, New Jersey, upset Javier Fortuna in June 2016 to win the WBA world super featherweight title. He made one successful title before relinquishing his belt to pound-for-pound great Vasiliy Lomachenko. Sosa has won a pair of fights since a controversial decision loss to Yuriorkis Gamboa and knows that a win over De Leon (19-0-1, 11 KOs) will move him closer to another crack at the brass ring.   De Leon, a Detroit product, was a top U.S. amateur who won three consecutive National Golden Gloves championships (2009-11). He turned away Adrian Yung via unanimous decision last July in New Orleans, winning despite injuring his right shoulder in the opening round. De Leon returned to action March 23 in Costa Mesa, California, knocking out Jose Luis Gallegos in seven rounds.

Morning Docket: 03.01.19
* Reps. Jim Jordan and Mark Meadows have referred Michael Cohen to the Justice Department, claiming that they have evidence that Trump’s former fixer “committed perjury and knowingly made false statements“ during his testimony before the House Oversight Committee. [CNN] * Meanwhile, thanks to Cohen’s testimony, Allen Weisselberg, the longtime chief financial officer of the Trump Organization who has already been granted immunity by SDNY prosecutors, will be called to testify before the House Intelligence Committee. [Daily Beast] * Almost time to say hello to Judge Neomi Rao: The nominee to replace Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the D.C. Circuit got through the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote, and the full Senate is likely to vote her onto the bench. [NBC News] * Lawrence Tu, the chief legal officer over at CBS, has resigned from his post and will be leaving the company in April. His leave follows the ouster of former CEO Les Moonves, who allegedly sexually harassed several employees. [New York Law Journal] * Much to the Justice Department's chagrin, a three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit unanimously ruled that not only may AT&T acquire Time Warner but that such a combination would be unlikely to harm competition. [Wall Street Journal] * Ho Ka Terence Yung, the ex-UT Law student who pleaded guilty to terrorizing an admissions interviewer after he was rejected from Georgetown Law, was just sentenced to almost four years in prison for one count of cyberstalking. [Law.com] * Lincoln Bandlow, a Fox Rothschild partner who some have referred to as a "porn copyright troll," got sanctioned $750 by a federal judge after missing court deadlines in at least two dozen of those porn infringement cases. Pandacan Fiesta January 2018 The best talaga si Terence pag may mga get together na ganito, akala ko di ako makikifiesta sa Pandacan this year pero bigla akong chinat ni Terence if pupunta daw ba sa kanila, may handa daw kasi silang konti, so ako naman G lang kasi gusto ko makikain. So yun, movie marathon, kwentuhan and soundtrip lang kami kila Terence then nagkaayaan na uminom kila Trishia so after namin kila Terence nag tricycle kami papunta kila Trishia at nag game at nagwalwal.
