A confirmation has arrived that three Chinese taikonauts from the Shenzhou 17 mission reached the Chinese space station Tiangong with an automated docking maneuver. They blasted off about 6.5 hours earlier atop a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. They form the sixth crew of the Chinese space station and will remain there for about six months, the standard duration for a mission.
The three taikonauts, as the Chinese call their astronauts, of the Shenzhou 17 mission are Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie, and Jiang Xinlin, whose names were announced only the day before the launch, as is customary for the Chinese.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Director: Yu Hongbo Starring: Wang Ning / An Weiling / Xue Wen / Sang Ping / Song Xi / Li Yu Genre: Comedy / Romance / Costume Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Date: 2022-06-19 (Mainland China Internet) Type: Retelling
Summary:
"The Bottomless Pit of Laughter" is a nonsensical romantic comedy movie that tells the story of a series of love entanglements that occurred after Tang Monk met a white rat spirit in a bottomless pit. The White Mouse Spirit (Xiao Bai) turned out to be a white mouse in Lingshan. She was knocked down to the mortal world for stealing lamp oil in front of the Buddha. When Xiaobai was in Lingshan, she was taken care of by Jin Chanzi, the second disciple of Tathagata Buddha, and she never forgets Jin Chanzi. Xiaobai, who fell into the mortal world, devoted himself to cultivation, hoping to return to Lingshan as soon as possible and reunite with Jin Chanzi.
The Red Rat Spirit (Xiaohong) was originally a little red mouse in the mortal world. Because they were sworn brothers to the White Rat, the two became sisters. Under the inspiration of the White Rat, they practiced together and transformed into human form. The two lived in the bottomless cave of Zengkong Mountain and depended on each other. One day, Xiaobai went astray in her cultivation and became a demon and her life was in danger. She needed to find someone from Zhiyang to replenish his energy in order to survive the crisis. It happened that Tang Seng's master and apprentice passed by here, and Tang Seng happened to be a man of great beauty.
Xiaobai transformed into a woman in distress and was rescued by Tang Seng. Xiaohong followed secretly on the other side. The two designed to take Tang Seng away and trap him in a bottomless pit. When Tang Monk woke up, the White Rat Spirit launched a fierce offensive against Tang Monk, and said that she did not want to hurt him, but only wanted to spend the night together. Tang Monk was indifferent to the various temptations of the White Rat Spirit, and resolved his refusal with wit and cleverness. He only wanted to escape from the bottomless pit. At this time, Wukong arrived, and Xiaohong fought against Wukong. Wukong was defenseless due to the heavy evil spirit in the cave, and was forced to jump out of the cave after a few rounds.
While fighting with Tang Seng, Xiaobai accidentally discovered that there was the same mark as Jin Chanzi on the back of Tang Seng's neck. Xiaobai was very excited. It turned out that Tang Seng was the reincarnation of Jin Chanzi, but Tang Seng had forgotten his previous life. Xiaobai tried to make Tang Seng remember his previous life.

On cue the crew of Shenzhou 17 was announced today (25 Oct), a day before launch. The Commander will be Senior Colonel Tang Hongbo of the PLAAF, aged 48. He was selected in 2010 (China Group-2) and previously flew onboard Shenzhou 12. That was the first mission to Tiangong which then only consisted of the Tianhe core module. This raises the possibility he will oversee the arrival of the second core module, Tianhe-2 (presumably), however an official said today they would first launch the Xuntian crew tended free flying space telescope before the 'extended module'. Tang Hongbo will be the first Chinese astronaut to visit Tiangong for a second time.
The other two crew are launching on their first mission and little information has been released about them. Operator Tang Shengie (no relation to Hongbo I presume), aged 34, is also a pilot in the PLAAF but was selected in 2020 (China Group-3) the third crew member is Jiang Xinlin, possibly a research engineer or payload specialist because he is said to be a 'professional tank driver and pilot with 1,000 hours of flight time'... that's a lot of flight hours for a tank driver. So maybe he is an army test pilot (does not say what kind of aircraft), they did not say he is in the PLAAF or any military service. He was also selected in 2020 (Group-3).
Other snippets of information from the press briefing... Shenzhou 16 will undock and land on 31 October, but before it departs the crew will photograph the assembled Chinese Space Station in HD, presumably from the orbital module of Shenzhou 16.
The new crew, during what will be CSS Expedition 6, will conduct an EVA and perform 'experimental maintenance' on the station for the first time (as opposed to outfitting and equipment testing), they suggested this may be associated with the solar arrays. I wonder if they are planning to move the original wing like arrays of Tianhe 1, now somewhat obscured by the two science modules, to the ends of the large arrays on the ends of the two science modules, as depicted earlier in some illustrations of the completed station. Presumably they would have to retract at least two of the big arrays to do that, it would be a major task.
In future only one Tianzhou supply ship will visit the station per year instead of two, because from Toanzhou 6 onwards the craft have a bigger payload capacity, in both terms of mass and volume, and also they have improved their inventory management systems.
The selection of Chinese astronaut Group-4 is expected to be completed by the end of 2023 when a further 12 to 14 astronauts will be selected from the current group of finalist which include candidates from Hong Kong and Macau.
In a parallel of NASA's commercial resupply program the CMS (China Manned Spaceflight) program have invited Chinese commercial companies to submit proposals for commercial supply ships for the station using Chinese commercial launchers, four proposals have been selected for further detailed design studies. In addition Universities and car companies have been invited to design lunar rover vehicle, currently 11 industry teams have submitted proposals.
Launch of Shenzhou 17 is scheduled for early Thursday morning our time at 04:14BST, docking will be six hours 30 minutes later, at around 10:45BST at the front axial port of the Tianhe core module.

Astronauts complete first Chinese space station spacewalk
Hausjärvi, FINLAND — Two Shenzhou-12 astronauts conducted a spacewalk late Saturday to carry to install equipment required for the long-term operation of China’s space station.
Liu Boming opened the hatch of the Tianhe module at 8:11 p.m. Eastern June 3 and was later joined outside by Tang Hongbo. Activities were completes at 2:57 a.m. June 4, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).
Wearing new-generation Feitian extravehicular activity suits the pair worked outside Tianhe while orbiting around 380 kilometers above the surface of the Earth.
Liu worked attached to a robotic arm while Tang worked along handrails on Tianhe.
The astronauts installed foot restraints and an extravehicular working platform on Tianhe’s mechanical arm. They later raised a panoramic camera.
Shenzhou-12 mission commander Nie Haisheng remained inside Tianhe and operated a small robotic arm to assist his colleagues.
The spacewalk is China’s second, following nearly 13 years after Zhai Zhigang’s 22-minute EVA during the September 2008 Shenzhou-7 mission.
Footage from the Beijing Aerospace Flight Control Center (BACC) broadcast by CCTV showed multiple angles of Tianhe and the astronauts’ point of view. Communications between Tianhe and the ground are facilitated by Tianlian relay satellites in geostationary orbit.
youtube
Nie assisted Liu and Tang in testing the Feitian suits July 1 in preparation for the spacewalk. They also checked the Tianhe docking hub which contains an EVA hatch.
A second spacewalk is planned to be conducted during the three-month-long Shenzhou-12 expedition to Tianhe.
Tianhe is the first of three modules which will form a T-shaped space station. The 16.6-meter-long, 4.2-meter-diameter module will provide regenerative life support and the main living quarters for astronauts as well as propulsion to maintain orbital altitude.
Shenzhou-12 docked with Tianhe on June 17, six hours 32 minutes after launch from Jiuquan.
Shenzhou-13 is being readied for an emergency rapid response launch but is otherwise expected to launch on schedule in October. The Tianzhou-3 cargo spacecraft will deliver supplies for the mission to Tianhe a month earlier.
Experiment modules named Wentian and Mengtian are expected to launch in 2022. Each will be manipulated into position by Tianhe’s 10.2-meter-long robotic arm.
Xuntian, a co-orbiting optical, Hubble-class space telescope will launch around 2024. The Chinese space station could also be expanded from three to six modules if main phase construction proceeds as planned.
