My father, Susumu Yamashita, was a junior executive at the San Francisco branch of Mitsubishi trading company before the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. On April 30, 1942, he was involved in the mass forced removal of the Japanese American community from Berkeley to Tanforan detention center, a former race track in San Bruno, with my mother, Kiyoko Yamashita, and my 18 month-old sister Kimiko. My family was housed in a horse-stall “apartment” from May to September.  When my family was transported to the Topaz, Utah incarceration camp in September 1942, my father was assigned to be the liaison to the Issei (first-generation) residents due to his Japanese-language proficiency, which was gained from his 11 years of education in Tokyo between 1911–1922. This is why he was labeled as a “Kibei,” American born but educated in Japan.  After working 14 months in Community Welfare, providing the camp’s social services, my father was ready for a change. My Cal Berkeley/Harvard Business School-alumnus, ex-businessman father asked to be transferred to the agricultural division to work as a ranch hand. He achieved personal satisfaction from working outdoors as a Kibei cowboy, tanned and healthy, herding cattle astride his favorite horse, Red. At age 39, he was undoubtedly one of the oldest “cowboys” amongst the riders at the Topaz cattle ranch. In 1951 he rejoined Mitsubishi and was charged with establishing its New York headquarters as the new Mitsubishi International Corporation. After Topaz, my father never rode a horse again.

At the Tanforan Assembly Center, Dr. Togasaki set up the medical facilities and led other healthcare professionals. In her first month, she delivered more than 50 babies. She provided care at every facility she was sent to thereafter. Dr. Togasaki continued to serve her community for 40 years after she was released. Over the course of her career, she delivered more than 10,000 babies.

This is an original 1948 photo of Citation at Tanforan.
If any horse deserved to wrest the mantle of greatness from Man o’ War, it was Citation according to those like Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons who saw both horses race. Certainly trainer Jimmy Jones agreed and given Citation’s three year old campaign one would concur.**
Jones always kicked himself for allowing Citation to run at Tanforan Race Track whose surface was notorious among horsemen for being as hard as concrete. Citation came out his sojourn to the west “gimpy.”
Supposedly Warren Wright was helping a friend who had an interest in the track by running Citation there. Another reason often bandied about is that Warren Wright, himself had a strong financial interest in the track.
While Citation won his races there, he missed his four year old season completely due to the injury that he sustained after racing at Tanforan. Citation came back to the races, but was never the same. Once achieving his owner’s quest of being the first horse to win a million dollars, he was retired.
Like many sons of the great stallion Bull Lea, Citation was not a great sire. His best offspring were the talented filly Silver Spoon and 1956 Preakness Winner Fabius.
**After Citation's victory in the Seminole Handicap in 1948 at Hialeah, where he defeated 1947 Horse of the Year Armed, impressed "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, who had trained Triple Crown winners Gallant Fox and Omaha. "Up to this point, Citation has done more than any horse I ever saw," he said, "and I saw Man o' War."

hiii just wanted to say that i really adore your book We Are Not Free!!! we’re studying it right now for english honors and i really came to love your writing. i LOVEEE how poetic it gets. keiko’s chapter had me SO SO floored. im about to start reading twitchy’s chapter. i heard people say it was sad 😭 but anyways thank you so much for writing WANF i love that book.
Tumblr media
—how i imagined yuki
I love this rendition of Yuki! You can tell she's got that Nakano duality of grit and sparkle.
Keiko's chapter was so much fun to write. I loved how the structure of it was an inverse of Yum-yum's chapter in Tanforan: Yum-yum is tallying up the days they're incarcerated; Keiko is counting down the hours until Twitchy leaves. (Twitchy's chapter is also a favorite of mine. But how could it not be? That boy, so in love with life.)
Thank you for sharing your art with me!

hey we are not free nation (@igizzz @snarkiestchicken)… go listen to 1942 by no-no boy (aka julian saporiti)!! it’s a folk album "named for the year 120,000 Japanese Americans were sent off to concentration camps across the US." in writing 1942, Saporiti reflected on his childhood as a half-Vietnamese kid in Tennessee and "chased the yellow threads in the American tapestry" in order to tell the stories of the Asian Americans who came before him.
After moving to Wyoming as an adult, Saporiti began to look into the history of Heart Mountain, a former Japanese-American internment camp, and 1942 is the product of that research. While it focuses on many Asian American stories--Vietnamese refugees who fled to Canada in the late 20th century, modern Boston college kids, Japanese lovers sending letters back and forth between Hawaiian islands--the Japanese-American internment of the mid-1940s remains at the heart of the album, making it a perfect companion piece to Trachi Chee's We Are Not Free.
especially relevant highlights include:
“Pacific Fog” - there's no tangible narrative here, but whenever I listen, I imagine the Golden Gate Bridge emerging from the San Francisco fog like in one of Minnow's drawings.
“Disposable Youth” - Saporiti's "imagining of what it would have been like to be ever experience a Memorial Day BBQ with people who looked like me." A group of teenagers enjoying each others' company in a distinctly American way.
“Heart Mountain” - the tale of two young lovers living at Heart Mountain internment camp in Wyoming and the beauty they found there in spite of everything.
“Two Candles in the Dark” - a moment in time, two kids dancing a clumsy waltz in the dark of a Heart Mountain root cellar Reminds me a lot of Bette and Frankie's dance under the orange lamps outside the mess hall.
“Instructions to All Persons” - A song assembled out of stories Saporiti had been told by some of the former incarcerated Japanese-Americans he met during his research. One of these snippets actually took place at the Tanforan racetrack (though Saporiti changed the name of the racetrack to make the song flow more easily)
and also definitely check out “The Best God Damn Band in Wyoming,” a song off of one of Saporiti’s other albums, 1975–it tells the story of the George Igawa Orchestra, a swing band formed at Heart Mountain incarceration camp in 1942.

81 years ago the US President signed an Executive Order that took 100,000 Americans away from their homes and businesses and placed them in concentration camps. My friend Yuki and her family were taken to Tanforan race track where they lived in horse stalls until the Topaz camp in Utah was ready. Today @vickiknits and I went to @multnomahcountylibrary and picked up a few books, including Elizabeth Partridge’s “Dorothea Lange” that accompanies the American Masters film “Grab a Hunk of Lightning”. I was happy to see a photograph of Dorothea Lange with her Graflex at Tanforan, and thought it would be amazing if in 1942 she made a photograph with my friend Yuki and her family in the frame. If we don’t recognize the history of America, and learn from the mistakes of the past, what Executive Orders may come from future Presidents? 🇺🇦💔🌎💔🌏💔🌍💔🇺🇦 #earth #america #human #family #people #documentary #street #dorothealange #history #legacy #photography #mediumformat #4x5 #camera #bnw @ilfordphoto #film #blancoynegro #blancetnoir #Hēiyǔbái #siyahbeyaz #白黒 #shirokuro #blackandwhite #istillshootfilm #photojournalism #pdx #portland #nw #northwest #oregon 1947 Graflex Super D Kodak 190mm 5.6 Ektar https://www.instagram.com/p/Co3RKwBv6Yp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On This Day - May 3, 1942 – In what has to be considered one of the saddest (and shameful) days in our history, Executive Order 9066, signed by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt, was issued by Lt. Gen John DeWitt from his headquarters in the SF Presidio. It called for the evacuation of Japanese-Americans from Los Angeles effective May 9. Some 110,000-112,000 Japanese-Americans were taken from their homes and settled in 10 relocation camps, the first of which was in Manzanar in Owens Valley, Ca.
In the Bay Area most Japanese-Americans were sent to the Tanforan racetrack where they were put up in stables and later relocated to Topaz, Utah.On 1 February 1943, the all volunteer Japanese/American (Nisei - "Go For Broke") 442nd Regimental Combat Team was activated.
The 442nd RCT would go to fight in Europe and become the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US military - this while their families and loved ones were locked into barbwire fenced  camps with military guards in desolate locations in the interior US. The unit, totaling about 18,000 men, were awarded over 4,000 Purple Hearts, 4,000 Bronze Stars, 560 Silver Star Medals, 21 Medals of Honor, and seven Presidential Unit Citations.
I don't enjoy posting this - but history is history, both the good and the bad. ALL must be preserved and remembered so as to act as lessons and reminders for us to work off of now, and in the future...

"Ida Gooday-Largo was born 1903, a Prisoner of War at Fort Sill Army Post in Lawton, Oklahoma. Her Apache name was Jeek’en Nant’an which means Chief Girl or, in her case, Bossy Girl.
Ida's Chiricahua Apache tribe, known as Warm Springs Apache, were imprisoned (1886-1914) by the United States Army for 27 years after the Apache Wars in the Southwest. When she was about 11 years old, she was sent to Chilacco Indian Boarding School and later to Phoenix Indian Boarding School. It was a policy that students were not allowed to go back to see their families for at least 3 years because the government felt it would be detrimental to their assimilation into the mainstream American ways."
-- Interview with Sisquoc, granddaughter of Ida Gooday-Largo
Exhibition
Dream Refuge for children imprisoned
February 7 – May 18 (closed March 17-24)
Monday – Saturday 11 am – 4 pm
Asian Arts Gallery, Center for the Arts, Towson University
1 Fine Arts Drive, Towson, MD 21204
Through personal stories and the universal images of sleeping children safely dreaming, I provide a healing space to experience compassion, empathy, and new understanding of the unjust incarceration of children then and now in America. I conducted interviews and collected writings of those incarcerated during their childhood. Exhibit attendees can hear their recorded voices expressing portions of their stories broadcasted in the installation space and read the complete writings with photographs in binders.
I began this installation process with “The Innocent Dreamer” the first sleeping child I drew in honor of the Japanese American children imprisoned at Tanforan Racetrack in San Bruno after the Pearl Harbor attack. I stuffed the girl’s mattress with hay and was instantly transported to that time, experiencing the smell and itchiness, and the insult of having to make my bed to sleep in a horse stable. The life size child drawing elicited tearful memories of those who were children in American concentration camps. She touched all kinds of people’s hearts and souls. She brought home the horror of imprisoning children as terrorists in our country.
Then the shock of the treatment of Central American children at our borders bombarded me, and I did what I always do - express my activism through art.
I expanded the project to include more sleeping children to connect the US history of incarcerating children, including Native American boarding school children who were denied their culture and taken from their communities, and the atrocities happening to children being imprisoned and separated from their families today.
Visitors are invited to bring offerings and leave messages on an altar in the exhibit to honor the imprisoned children. The items will be used in future ceremonies and will not be returned. Some examples of past offerings origami, small toys, and paper flowers.
--Na Omi Judy Shintani, artist

The Topaz War Relocation Center, also known as the Central Utah Relocation Center (Topaz) and briefly as the Abraham Relocation Center, was an American concentration camp that housed Americans of Japanese descent and immigrants who had come to the United States from Japan, called Nikkei. President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 in February 1942, ordering people of Japanese ancestry to be incarcerated in what were euphemistically called "relocation centers" like Topaz during World War II. Most of the people incarcerated at Topaz came from the Tanforan Assembly Center and previously lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. The camp was opened in September 1942 and closed in October

San Froyo, 1150 El Camino Real, San Bruno, CA 94066
Tumblr media
Fro-yo girl here. San Froyo is the new name of what used to be the OrangeTree at Tanforan. Can you believe that OrangeTree opened in 2009? It survived for over a decade. The OrangeTree sign is still above the entrance.
San Froyo has 12 self-serve froyo and sorbet flavors with toppings for $0.79/oz. You can get your froyo but an employee has to add the toppings, so it's only partial self-serve. Toppings included fruit, cereal, candy, mochi, cookies, chocolate chips, popping boba, nuts, etc.
The decor is cheerful and bright with bright green walls.
Froyo flavors of the day:
Fancy French vanilla
Cappuccino
Very strawberry (unavailable)
Alphonso mango (unavailable)
Chocolate
Cookies & cream
Taro
Original tart: icy and gritty, mildly tangy
Pineapple sorbet
Raspberry sorbet: very sweet, like candy rather than raspberries the fruit, icy & smooth
Green apple sorbet
The only cups they have are gigantic. The froyo is okay but expensive for average quality froyo. However, it's the only froyo shop at the mall. The mall has plenty of parking. San Froyo is on the lower level.
You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
2 out of 5 stars
