I keep thinking about Woo Young-woo's mother, Tae Su-mi and the choice she made.
The drama hasn't told us anything from her perspective yet, but there are some indisputable facts and some likely possibilities.
She was in her early 20s, a promising student with a bright career in law ahead. She fell in love and got pregnant and suddenly her whole future looked dark. She was considering abortion, but at the desperate pleas of the man she loved, she agreed to go through with the pregnancy. She stayed at home for 9 months, risked her reputation and her life to give birth in a home where she must have faced constant hostility from her parents, and then gave the child up.
I have a lot of admiration for this woman.
She didn't have to go through the pregnancy. She didn't have to take a long leave from school causing rumours to arise which followed her around for decades. She didn't have to stay stuck at home for so many months, in a likely cold household where she would have faced immense pressures to abort the child.
She went through all of it because the father wanted the baby to be born and Tae Su-mi respected that choice.
From Young-woo's perspective, her mother abandoned her and that's a fact too.
But I can't see Tae Su-mi as the villain when she clearly went through an extremely painful period of mourning for giving Young-woo up. It seems clear to me that she only decided to keep the child because she knew she could trust Young-woo's dad to raise her well.
And while I absolutely love Woo Gwang-ho, Dad, I can't see him as just the valiant hero.
He gave up his career and made his own life extremely hard. Then he made Young-woo the center of his existence to the point where he thinks he has the right to decide whether or not his Junior can use his daughter to needle her mother.
"You can do it just once! I will permit it once!" he tells the woman, as if hurting Tae Su-mi is a justifiable action and using Young-woo as the weapon is an acceptable price to him.
But Young-woo isn't his possession.
And Tae Su-mi isn't a villain for choosing not to be with this man.
I really do love Dad for how wonderful he is with Young-woo, but he did make that story way too much about himself.

When Youngwoo had asked her younger brother to extend an invitation to their mother for her and Junho’s wedding, she hadn’t really expected her to turn up.
“Are you leaving?” She says as she catches up with the older woman outside the hall, Junho right behind her.
Tae Sumi turns to face her. “Yes. I have… somewhere I need to be, but I wanted to… well. I just - congratulations,” she settles for. “I left you a wedding gift on the table.”
Still feeling a little stunned, Younfwoo is glad when Junho opens his mouth and speaks for her. “Thank you - and thank you for coming. I know it meant a lot to Youngwoo that you did.”
“Yes,” her estranged mother says, and glances between them before bowing her head. “Well - enjoy the rest of your day.”
“We’re expecting,” Youngwoo blurts out before she can turn away, and Tae Sumi’s eyes widen.
“What?”
“We’re expecting,” she repeats, “and by expecting I don’t mean ‘something about to happen’.” her hand goes to her belly, still mostly flat to anyone who wasn’t specifically looking, but she can feel the ever so slight curve of her abdomen as she rests it there. She feels Junho’s hand on her back.
Tae Sumi’s gaze flickers between where her hand rests, and her and Junho, seemingly unable to find words a moment, before she gives herself a shake.
“I see,” she replies, and forces a smile. “Well. congratulations.”
She makes to turn away and Youngwoo hurries on.
“I wanted -“ she waits until her mother turns back to face her. “I wanted to ask if…” she glances at Junho who gives her a nod. His hand is still warm on her back, and she focuses on it, the feeling grounding her. “This child will be your granddaughter,” she continues. “You weren’t a part of your daughter’s life at all, but… but if you would like to be part of your granddaughter’s… well, I think she would like that too.”
Tae Sumi appears frozen, face going through a number of subtle expressions Youngwoo can’t identify. After a moment she speaks. “You’re having a girl?”
Youngwoo nods. “Yes. I’m four months along, at the last scan they were able to identify her gender. We haven’t decided on a name yet but the name ‘Has’ means ocean, so it’s one we’re considering to be a part of it, since Junho says we can’t name her golae.”
A flicker of a smile appears briefly on Sumi’s face at that. “I’m glad one of you is sensible,” she agrees.
Youngwoo shuffles on her feet. “Okay,” she says, content that she’d said what she wanted to, and nods at Junho, turning to head back inside.

Got me thinking since they pulled this last minute Kwon Minwoo redemption plot. Think they might do the same with Tae Sumi?
See again,I'm not opposed to Attorney Kwon's redemption arc or his perspective. Looking back, as much he was a MAJOR ableist asshole towards Young woo,he seemed to be a kinda go-okay-ish friend to Junho. He seems to be passionate about his job. Does he have the same ethics that Young woo has? Probably not. He works for money (which generally speaking imho isn't a bad thing) from the looks of it but then again I really do not know. I like my characters grey but his redemption arc should've been written a lot better and definitely not from a romantic POV which in my humble opinion was also sloppily written. Could've paired them up at the end ,show some blossoming feelings. Hints of a romance after he had FALLEN DOWN ON HIS KNEES AND BEGGED YOUNG WOO FOR FORGIVENESS.
Lol I sound like a broken recorder. I'm just so dissatisfied haha.
Anyways going back to Tae Sumi, correct me if I'm wrong but she is a daughter of some bigshot lawyer? and she inherited Taesan law firm from her dad and was the CEO and then stepped down and went back to the field and now is on her way to becoming the Minister of Justice? My ADHD brain glosses over these facts so I hope I got that right lol
So what I'm assuming is she probably had lots of expectations and I guess her family were big names. A baby out of wedlock would've been a huge scandal and caused lots of issues. So,then I could understand a scared young girl with lots of expectations on her. After that scene when she finds out that Woo Young Woo is her daughter,I thought I saw hurt and regret. Even when she pulled the whole Boston thing. I was mad mad at her but then I also thought of that being the possibility of her protecting them. I would've considered that possiblity until that interaction with Kwon Minwoo where it seemed it was never about her regret or protecting them or her daughter or making amends. It was the fear of losing everything but then again I don't know.
Then we have CEO Han too. Can't say I'm totally surprised but damn I didn't think she would do it like this.
Again I don't know how it's all going to play out.
Young woo can leave that stinking Hanbada and go work with Attorney Ryu or the firm Attorney Jung opens up when he is better. He better be 👀.
All I want for her is that she continues doing what she loves and she has the people she loves and who love her by her side. Her dad,her friends, her mentor (s) and her boyfriend ,Junho (they communicate and work through their issues like the healthy couple that they are)
In the end, I just want my darling to be happy.
And she better see them dolphins or whales..

in defence of tae sumi
(rewatching the finale again, and i got to the part of her public apology(?) in front of the reporters after sanghyeon’s witness statement in court)
we know from sanghyeon that she has been a good and fair mom to him. We also know that as a lawyer, she’s good at her job, being heralded as “King” in court, as well as showing it to us in ep 7-8.
so, i think that this whole minister of justice thing, coupled with the revelation of the child she already gave away years ago, has been affecting her mentally and emotionally. even though for the past 27 years she’s been working hard in every aspect of her life, the way everything suddenly feels like its derailing and getting out of hand, anyone would have a hard time, to say the least. and then she finds out that her own son is the hacker in a case her own law firm is on the prosecutor side of, and she breaks.
yes, i still think that was selfish of her. to put her own career and public image above what her child wanted and needed, which was to receive his due consequences for his actions. to go as far as to get the police on her side, and to send her son off to another country to evade his punishment. all just so she could be the minister of justice.
but, i’m glad both sanghyeon and youngwoo pointed this out to her, and helped her see that it was wrong, because ultimately she needed that. in her tunnel visioning selfishness and self preservation, it was her children’s words that got her out and see the big picture. the child she abandoned and tried to hide, and the child she’s been raising to be a good person. she needed both of them to remember how to be a good mother and a good person.
even though i still don’t have a totally favourable opinion of her, i am excited to see tae sumi in season 2 and how the writers will continue to develop her character.

Kwon Min-woo did not change in the end
let me explain why I am upset with Kwon Minwoo's redemption attempt in case you too were conflicted about liking him at the end cause something still felt very, very off.
It was because they redeemed him for the wrong sin.
Kwon Minwoo has been called a tactician and strategist throughout the show so much that even the writer seemed to think that his main problem was that he was too cautious and liked to stay safe by playing up to authority and refusing to challenge it.
So his final arc was written to inspire some courage in him so he would stand up and defend his colleagues instead of pandering to his senior's ego.
And the inspiration was injected through Soo-yeon's affection for him.
So finally the cowardly lion found some "foolish" courage and all was well.
EXCEPT IT WAS NOT.
Kwon Min-woo was never hated by the fandom because he was too cautious to stand up for his friends or take any risks.
The man walked into Taesun and blackmailed Tae Su-mi.
Stomp on that silly notion right now.
KWON MIN-WOO IS AN ACE OPPORTUNIST.
And his biggest sin was not his cowardice or even his ambition but the fact that he treated Woo Young-woo as a misplaced alien who was taking up resources and attention that he wanted for himself.
The flaw his character should have been redeemed for WAS NEVER ADDRESSED.
Because Kwon Min-woo never had a moment when he showed remorse or even realisation of his own prejudice.
Even the SHOW didn't challenge Min-woo whenever he ranted about Young-woo's "advantages".
Attorney Jung Myung-suk politely told him off for bringing up punishments for Young-woo once but didn't sit the man down to address the underlying reasons for his hostility towards his colleague.
Soo-yeon could only stare at him baffled and later could only beg him to become a braver person.
None of which is an adequate call out of his behaviour.
Everyone just ignored his behaviour like it'll go away if they pretended nothing happened.
HOW CAN A CHARACTER BE REDEEMED WHEN HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE DID WRONG??
And this is on the writer and director!
You guys created this man. How did you forget his main flaw? 🫣
Now, Kwon Min-woo - the character - was initially an excellent piece of writing. The actor Joo Jong-hyuk poured a wry charisma into his skin and made him remarkably memorable.
He was instantly familiar to a majority of the audience as that guy who always saw the worst in people and situations. Who would never extend a hand of help because he wouldn't want to "look weak". Who would ignore workplace unfairness so long as it didn't affect him and would only quietly observe to calculate if the situation can directly benefit him at all!
We all poured out unique experiences with someone "like him" into Kwon Minwoo, but ultimately we all hated him because he was mean to Woo Young-woo and it was unjustified.
And the story forgot that.
I don't blame anyone for wanting his redemption. Everyone deserves the chance to change.
BUT KWON MIN-WOO NEVER CHANGED.
Two failed high fives and an awkward smile doesn't mean a thing when it comes after a thoughtless betrayal just a few episodes ago.
He revealed to the reporter first that Young-woo was Tae Su-mi's birth mother. He knew nothing of her situation or her relationship with Tae Su-mi but he did this anyway so Young-woo would suffer.
Then he mailed evidence in her name to their rival to get Young-woo fired.
When a character falls into the pits of evil, you have to show a massive effort of conscience to convince the audience that he climbed all the way out.
We got nothing.
and that's why you and I are upset.
Cause Kwon Min-woo had real potential for a great redemption arc and the drama failed him AND US.

“Though there are many sayings, life is to gladly become a piece of coal for someone other than myself. From the day the floors grow cold to the day spring comes, the most beautiful thing in the streets of the Korean peninsula is a truck that fervidly climbs up the hill with coal. As if it knows what it has to do, coal burns endlessly once its body catches fire, but I was oblivious even though I had warm rice and soup every day.
Because I feared becoming a lonely lump of ashes after loving others with my whole being, I haven’t become coal for anyone. When I think about it, life is to shatter myself into pieces. I had never thought of clearing the streets for others to tread when the world is slippery from early morning snow.

minwoo needs to stop obsessing over destroying youngwoo and focus on learning and becoming a better lawyer bc while he’s wasting his time investigating youngwoo, she’s out there kicking ass, so connections or not, she’s going to be the one signing a long term contract at the end of the year not him
