putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

that big, chunky, ink artstyle is a lot of fun to do. it's very, very forgiving, much more so than my usual painting. if i resize something and it looks artifacted, i have to paint back over it. in the ink one, that's actually not a bad thing since it feeds back into the gradient map and gives the colour somewhere to latch on to. the faster you go, the less care you take, the more you fuck up your lighting and dpi and go back over your lines, the better it turns out!

one thing i will be interested to see is how they handle the initial stages of louis and armand's attraction. they expanded a lot upon louis and lestat's courtship, but they kind of had to if they were going to present it straight away as a romance because that element doesn't come out until much later in the novel. whereas louis and armand's meeting in the book is, if not quite love at first sight then certainly 'i've got to have him' at first sight. it wouldn't need retooling to be romantic.
however they do have a whole season to explore the second half of a not very long book, so obviously they're going to have to expand quite a lot on elements and i think devoting more time to how they fall in love would be an obvious element to build up.
i'm kind of torn because i really like how instantly they are dying to be together but i do also think there's some interesting ways they could slow things down like louis perhaps feeling uncertain about having romantic feelings for someone again after his toxic marriage or armand initially being intrigued because of the connection to lestat but then becoming obsessed for real. there are definitely elements they could explore before diving straight into the 'how do we ditch all our existing commitments to run away together' stage.

i have some quotes from nlh saved on my phone in hebrew bc that's the language i read it in. and i looked for their equivalent in english for reasons that don't matter rn. and woag it's interesting to see the difference in entire vibes between the languages, wholly from the translation style. the hebrew version feels like there's way more emotion behind every line while the english version sounds... soulless (which, given the story, can def be the right vibe). idk how the original is so i can't tell which is more accurate but it does make me. Hm.

Dogs felt so fucking prime on our run today! Running on Friday def made Slash more level headed this run, he was much more focused. One problem that I’m dealing with with him is that he absolutely HATES having to turn around (this is a common problem amongst sled dogs, when you have an out and back trail they understand they are going home and the run is ending when you turn around which is why the best trails are loops). Always something to work on!

an old lady came in today, followed by a frantic and hovering younger woman
Old Lady (to my coworker): “Can you see about a book I had placed on reserve?”
Younger Woman (to OL): “Ma’am, are you sure you’re alright?”
OL (to coworker): “I think it was in last week, but I didn’t get a phone call...”
YW (to OL): “I have my insurance card in my truck, are you sure you’re okay?”
OL (to coworker): “Oh, do you have a paper towel? I’ve gotten mud on your counter... I just got hit by a car.”
Me and my coworker, who had been trying to parse this relationship: “?!?!?!?!?!!?”
The Younger Woman had side-swiped the Older Lady in the parking lot and knocked her down, and the Older Lady’s priority was literally the book she put on hold. O_O
#library#the Older Lady had been walking a straight line towards the library and the truck was cruising next to her#but the OL stepped to the side to avoid slush/snow chunk in the parking lot and walked into the broad side of the YW's truck#the OL seemed to be okay but shaken and we kind of bullied her into sitting in a chair and telling us her dtr's phone number#so we called and texted the dtr who luckily lives in town and got there in about 20 minutes#and my supe called the 911 dispatch and i guess absolutely nothing else was happening in town bc the ambo was there in literally 1 minute#and fire came too (they like to feel useful) and a police traffic officer came to get statements and stuff#the OL was like 'i'll drive myself home' and i was like 'I WILL DRIVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL MYSELF'#the paramedics were absolutely wonderful with this lady. they were so gentle and kind (she was easy to be kind to... but still.)#and after all that?? the OL's book and come and gone but the phone notifications glitched last week and didn't alert anyone#so that poor OL didn't even have a book to read in the emergency room (her dtr and son-in-law came to get her)#my brother (also a paramedic) once ran a call for an older lady who was having chest pain and was afraid she had a heart attack#it turns out she did NOT have a heart attack-- she had been scrubbing her bathtub and the pressure from leaning on the side of the tub#LITERALLY BROKE ONE OF HER RIBS and she didn't know it until later that evening when it started hurting to breathe#so even though our Old Lady today didn't think anything was broken... :| she's 81. so yeah we harangued her into going to the hospital#'what did you do today merry?' 'i bullied an old woman into going to the hospital'#long tags

please help me- i used to be pretty smart but i’m having so much trouble grasping the concept of diegetic vs non-diegetic bdsm!
gfkjldghfd okay first of all I'm sorry for the confusion, if you're not finding anything on the phrase it's because I made it up and absolutely nobody but me ever uses it, but I haven't found a better way to express what I'm trying to say so I keep using it. but now you've given me an excuse to ramble on about some shit that is only relevant to me and my deeply inefficient way of talking and by god I'm going to take it.
Tumblr media
SO. the way diegetic and non-diegetic are normally used is to talk about music and sound design in movies/tv shows. in case you aren't familiar with that concept, here's a rundown:
diegetic sound is sound that happens within the world of the movie/show and can be acknowledged by the characters, like a song playing on the stereo during a driving scene, or sung on stage in Phantom of the Opera. it's also most other sounds that happen in a movie, like the sounds of traffic in a city scene, or a thunderclap, or a marching band passing by. or one of the three stock horse sounds they use in every movie with a horse in it even though horses don't really vocalize much in real life, but that's beside the point, the horse is supposed to be actually making that noise within the movie's world and the characters can hear it whinnying.
non-diegetic sound is any sound that doesn't exist in the world of the movie/show and can't be perceived by the characters. this includes things like laugh tracks and most soundtrack music. when Duel of Fates plays in Star Wars during the lightsaber fight for dramatic effect, that's non-diegetic. it exists to the audience, but the characters don't know their fight is being backed by sick ass music and, sadly, can't hear it.
the lines can get blurry between the two, you've probably seen the film trope where the clearly non-diegetic music in the title sequence fades out to the same music, now diegetic and playing from the character's car stereo. and then there are things like Phantom of the Opera as mentioned above, where the soundtrack is also part of the plot, but Phantom of the Opera does also have segments of non-diegetic music: the Phantom probably does not have an entire orchestra and some guy with an electric guitar hiding down in his sewer just waiting for someone to break into song, but both of those show up in the songs they sing down there.
now, on to how I apply this to bdsm in fiction.
if I'm referring to diegetic bdsm what I mean is that the bdsm is acknowledged for what it is in-world. the characters themselves are roleplaying whatever scenarios their scenes involve and are operating with knowledge of real life rules/safety practices. if there's cnc depicted, it will be apparent at some point, usually right away, that both characters actually are fully consenting and it's all just a planned scene, and you'll often see on-screen negotiation and aftercare, and elements of the story may involve the kink community wherever the characters are. Love and Leashes is a great example of this, 50 Shades and Bonding are terrible examples of this, but they all feature characters that know they're doing bdsm and are intentional about it.
if I'm talking about non-diegetic bdsm, I'm referring to a story that portrays certain kinks without the direct acknowledgement that the characters are doing bdsm. this would be something like Captive Prince, or Phantom of the Opera again, or the vast majority of bodice ripper type stories where an innocent woman is kidnapped by a pirate king or something and totally doesn't want to be ravished but then it turns out he's so cool and sexy and good at ravishing that she decides she's into it and becomes his pirate consort or whatever it is that happens at the end of those books. the characters don't know they're playing out a cnc or D/s fantasy, and in-universe it's often straight up noncon or dubcon rather than cnc at all. the thing about entirely non-diegetic bdsm is that it's almost always Problematic™ in some way if you're not willing to meet the story where it's at, but as long as you're not judging it by the standards of diegetic bdsm, it's just providing the reader the same thing that a partner in a scene would: the illusion of whatever risk or taboo floats your boat, sometimes to extremes that can't be replicated in real life due to safety, practicality, physics, the law, vampires not being real, etc. it's consensual by default because it's already pretend; the characters are vehicles for the story and not actually people who can be hurt, and the reader chose to pick up the book and is aware that nothing in it is real, so it's all good.
this difference is where people tend to get hung up in the discourse, from what I've observed. which is why I started using this phrasing, because I think it's very crucial to be able to differentiate which one you're talking about if you try to have a conversation with someone about the portrayal of bdsm in media. it would also, frankly, be useful for tagging, because sometimes when you're in the mood for non-diegetic bodice ripper shit you'd call the police over in real life, it can get really annoying to read paragraphs of negotiation and check-ins that break the illusion of the scene and so on, and the opposite can be jarring too.
it's very possible to blur these together the same way Phantom of the Opera blurs its diegetic and non-diegetic music as well. this leaves you even more open to being misunderstood by people reading in bad faith, but it can also be really fun to play with. @not-poignant writes fantastic fanfic, novels, and original serials on ao3 that pull this off really well, if you're okay with some dark shit in your fiction I would highly recommend their work. some of it does get really fucking dark in places though, just like. be advised. read the tags and all that.
but yeah, spontaneous writer plug aside, that's what I mean.

Okay so I'd been putting off watching shadow and bone bc I was worried they'd do my favourite books dirty but 10/10 recommend.
It's so far from the og content it's almost completely separable while still keeping the most important bits from the source material.
Y'all I am so picky about tv and I usually hate fight scenes but they were done so well. I'm gonna watch s2 tomorrow and I really hope it stands up to s1
