"Excuse me?"

"Eh, there can I 'elp ya?" Came the gruff but light hearted reply from the center of the growing ring of chairs, the dwarf still holding one of them in his hands easily.

From the top of the stairs stood a young Dark Iron woman, her skin even gray in the low light of the basement of Stoneblade, her hands rubbing together as she looked about the room. A summoning circle of mismatched chairs, an old weather beaten rug, a long table holding a stack of ceramic cups, and in the center the thick gruff dwarf who looked back her. His hair was slicked back and dotted with as much salt as the pepper it might have been long ago, the beard just the same as it was braided tight down to his belt. He looked every bit the stereotypical Ironforge dwarf except perhaps the pair of half moon spectacles that rested on his hawk nose.

Again the gruff voice asked again of the young woman at the top of the stairs. "Ya need something?"

She quickly began to shake her head, her steps already backing the way she had begun. "No, no I think ah'm in the wrong place."

The chair the dwarf had been carrying set down with a soft thump as he clopped his might form over to the base of the steps, a heavy scarred hand coming to stroke his beard as he looked up at her. "Well what place are ya lookin for?"

Again she hesitated.

"Ah'm Tovar," the gruff voice said again, his eyes looking over the top of his glasses at her. Tovar was already reading over some clear signs on her from the red eyes, blotching of yellowed skin on the normal grey, and the sheen of sweat that was hardly from the fires of the Great Forge. "Ya in trouble?"

"No, I think I need to go."

Again she would back up, her hand already reaching for the handle of the old door as she turned her back to him now.

"A'rite, but just know we're always here for ya. No judgement, no resentment, and no politics," Tovar's hand would lower from his beard, though a sadness could be felt in his gaze his words would not push it. "You can be who you need to be and how you need to be. If ya need help, we know how to do that."

"Hell I can do that, even if I can always do et fer myself!" There was a weak laugh that echoed from Tovar, reaching up to run a hand through his thinning hair on top of his head. "But when I or we can, we do. Groups or one on one."

"It's jus up to ya."

The final phrase was enough for the Dark Iron woman, already she was slumping down on the stairs. Her shoulders shaking as Tovar began to head up the steps, to lay a comforting hand to her shoulder and offer a hand.

"No need fer tears yet, come on. We'll get ya settled."

Tovar Copperfen is a sponsor and member of the Stoneblade Anonymous, a group of people who gather to help with their addictions. A close friend of Grumvald and one of the first members of the group, he's come a long way from the horrors of his own self destruction and nightmares of his past in the war-torn lives within Ironforge. BIOGRAPHY.

El has lived an absurdly long life with an unbelievable amount of adventures, and they're still kicking. It's more than I care to condense into a bio, frankly. Thus I'll be giving an overview of their earliest years. Further details can be found in the timeline.

ELMINSTER WAS BORN IN THE small country village of Heldon, Athalantar. Their early days were spent peacefully, tending sheep and learning at their parents' feet. Then it was lost in a blaze of dragonfire. They were twelve years old when the Warring Princes of Athalantar sought out their hidden brother, El's father, to lay low him and all his issue. From then on, El was forced to make their way as an outlaw and a thief — or else be slaughtered by their uncle and the mages puppeteering him.

Seven years past before they could hide no longer. They entered Mystra's temple intending to burn it down, but left under Her divine guidance. There was nothing El hated more than mages and their goddess, but he couldn't thwart them by learning spells more powerful. First they were a cleric. Then they were a wizard. Then they were the face of a revolution. They rallied their allies and drove the tyrant and his mages from the land. However, El chose not to take the throne in the end. They wisely abdicated to Helm Stoneblade. Then they left, never to return, lest his reign be destabilized by their presence.

This was not an end for Elminster, merely a greater beginning. They'd hardly made it out of the capital of Hastarl before Mystra offered them a divine blessing — and divine burden. If El willed it, they would become Mystra's Chosen to serve Her will and further the Art across Toril. They accepted. They have thus outlived their natural lifespan by over a millennium, and have suffered grief and torments beyond any other. Still, they persist. Their greatest comfort lays in helping others; so long as they can be a force for good, they are satisfied.

"A moral to the tale, no doubt," Toc commented wryly.

"Indeed."

"And here I was planning to spend the night tossing bones with Senu and Thurule."

Senu snapped, "Come and eat, Stonearrow!"

Uh oh, I think I just overstepped the familiarity thing.

Ascension: Year 2 Collector’s Edition (Storm of Souls & Immortal Heroes). I got out of CCGs just as foil chase cards were starting to be a thing - I think I still have a few from Decipher’s execrable Lord of the Rings game - so I’ve never gotten to actually play with this kind of shiny card 😄. The Ascension Collectors’ editions get marked down occasionally online and I’ve been able to get some of the older ones at pretty good prices by putting on a price drop alert at Miniature Market. I wouldn’t pay list for sure, but they’re very nice sets and have all the promos. The foil cards aren’t quite as usable as the standards ones (harder to read and shuffle) but they do look pretty cool 😄. I always felt like the year two sets were peak Ascension, but going back to them now after playing a bunch of Dreamscape, Gift of the Elements, and Delirium ... yeah, there are a *lot* of good Ascension sets. The only ones I’m not really a super fan of are Rise of Vigil, Valley of the Ancients, and Skulls & Sails, and even they’re OK. It really is impressive that 10 years later Ascension is not just still chugging along as one of the best games in this space, but has been often “imitated” but rarely have the imitators been even close to as good. It is still basically a 2 or 3 player game, but the Alliances expansion does have a really good team play mode.
