@directorethxn x @worldfestmedia As the Spicemas festival approaches let’s we have to look back at the origins of the festival. Jab Jab is a culturally significant tradition in Grenada that originated during the days of slavery. It is a unique form of celebration that emerged when enslaved Africans on the sugar plantations were excluded from the Carnival festivities reserved for the colonialists. Jab Jab represents freedom and resilience, commemorating the emancipation of the slaves. During Carnival season, particularly on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, Jab Jab masqueraders take to the streets in black oil or paint, symbolizing their African heritage. They carry chains, wear goat horns, and display red tongues. The music accompanying Jab Jab is created using biscuit tins, oil drums, and conch shells. Jab Jab is a powerful symbol of Grenadian history, strength, and identity, and it is not associated with evil or demonic culture. Jab Jab holds immense cultural importance in Grenada, distinguishing it from other Caribbean islands. It represents the spirit of freedom and the ability to find joy despite hardships. The tradition showcases the resilience of the Grenadian people and their rich heritage. Jab Jab is observed during the Carnival season, specifically on Jouvert, where masqueraders parade through the streets of Grenada’s parishes. They are adorned in black oil or paint, carrying chains and displaying distinct props such as goat horns, cucus bags, and red tongues. The music of Jab Jab is created using drums, biscuit tins, and conch shells. Jab Jab is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Grenada, serving as a powerful symbol of the island’s history and cultural identity. #jabjab #festival #spicemas #carnival
