Sonic Icebound: a mock write-up for a psychological survival horror game.
Tumblr media
Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: SEGA
Genre(s): Survival horror, psychological horror
Platforms: Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Mode(s): Single-player
ESRB Rating: T
Release Date: TBD
Synopsis: A secret expedition to Antarctica goes catastrophic after the Tornado 1 wrecks near the South Pole during polar winter with Sonic aboard. Woefully unprepared and equipped with little more than a flashlight, a map and a radio transceiver (where Tails is the only one on the other end back home — and the only one aware of Sonic’s whereabouts), poor visibility and unpredictable terrain stifles Sonic’s running ability. With rescue unavailable for 72 hours and the evacuation site over 2,000 kilometers away, Sonic must arrive in time for the Tornado 2 to retrieve him. En route, Sonic must combat his own fears of isolation and paranoia of being trapped in such a remote place while keeping his mind sound in order to survive.
(Full information can be seen within this document or below the cut in plaintext. The document and this post may be updated at any time.)
Gameplay: Sonic Icebound is a psychological survival horror game with action and platforming elements. It is played from the first-person perspective. At the beginning of the game, Sonic’s map is only marked with his location at the South Pole and the location of the evacuation site. He has 72 in-game hours (roughly four hours in real time) to reach the site before Tails arrives there. A small circular zone surrounding Sonic’s initial spawn point serves as a tutorial for the player to get used to the controls and mechanics.
Unlike other Sonic games, rings are not used as health or energy. Instead, Sonic has a fixed health meter; he can heal himself passively over time but the rate of replenishing is slow. Alternatively, first-aid kits can be found in some man-made structural remains and heal Sonic faster. There is an increased chance of injury when some actions (e.g. sprinting) are performed. Sonic dies if the health meter reaches zero, resulting in a game over; the player is sent back to their most recent save point (or to the start of the game if no save point had been reached prior to death).
Throughout the game, Sonic’s intense survival mentality makes him an unreliable narrator; among other things, he often hears sounds which have no traceable source and are of an indiscernible nature, and the pitch-black night gradually increases his anxiety, thinking he sees hostile entities in his peripheral vision. No such entities truly exist, but there are other dangers that threaten Sonic. They are mainly geological hazards, such as deep sub-glacial lakes covered with snow and/or thin sheets of ice or tall mountains with unforgiving terrain. Some hazards are meteorological or biological.
Basic Controls: (PC controls shown only)
WASD = movement
Move Mouse = look around
Left Click = interact
Right Click = zoom vision
F = toggle flashlight
Space = jump
Space (while jumping) = homing attack
Q = toggle sprint
Left Shift = crouch
C = go prone
M = view map
R = use radio transceiver (if possible)
Enter = pause game
ESC = close prompt
Items & Mechanics:
Flashlight: Sonic will use this almost constantly as the sun does not rise. Best used for finding paths, major landmarks, and remains of manmade structures.
Radio transceiver: Sonic’s only lifeline; Tails can give Sonic concise directions to the evacuation site, but time constraints force Sonic to ration his own use of the device.
Map: Empty at the start of the game, Sonic will gradually begin marking major geographical features on it as he encounters them; these features also serve as save points for the player.
Homing attack: Sonic can attack in rapid succession to climb obstacles, reach hidden paths, or break through thin ice and snow.
Sprinting: Can be useful for getting Sonic across large chunks of relatively flat terrain. Sprinting increases the probability of getting injured.
Crouching: Sonic can crouch and then walk to move through spaces he wouldn’t be able to pass while standing up. This is occasionally required at certain points in order to keep Sonic warm.
Going prone: In some places, Sonic must go prone to crawl through extremely tight, narrow spaces. No tools can be used while Sonic is prone, including his flashlight.
Map: (Sonic’s path marked)

The Deli - Spacetime (Cold Busted)
8DPromo · The Deli - Spacetime (Cold Busted)
Austin’s acclaimed hip-hop beatrepreneur The Deli embraces the celestial on his latest album, Spacetime. After the massive success of his album Vibes 3, its follow-up Jazz Cat, and the infectious track “Flowers” (over 50-million plays on Spotify so far), there’s been anticipation for his next long-player for Cold Busted. Look to the skies — Spacetime arrives like a cosmic gravity wave, sonic transmissions soundtracking happenings out among the stars. Load these tunes up for the next space mission and prepare to cruise. Spacetime opens with “welcome2space,” bringing a sense of weightlessness with gentle piano chords and a sparse rhythm. “paracausalzone” lightly boosts the thrusters, with shimmering pads and unidentified percussion objects. There’s a perilous journey through the “astroidbelt” accompanied by jazzy, muted horns and languid beats; and a visit to the “spacecafe” where sub-bass with a side of vibes is on the menu. Spacetime is a 17-track mission, closing with the imaginative “goodbyelullabye.” On this final cut, bouncing bass blips, smooth synth lines, and stereo glimmers welcome our spacefaring listener back to Earth. But these galactic beats make a repeated returns to orbit quite inviting.
Anatoly Ice (Icebound) – “Very cool fusion of chill and dubby J Dilla kind of swing.” Al Patterson (Vinyl Athletes) – “The Deli always delivers the heat.” DJ Osric (Black and Blue Show) – “This is sensational. The Deli never fails to bring the goods, and this is up there with his best work.” Andy Wilson (Ibiza Sonica) – “Top quality head nodding beats. This is dope.” Aja Allsop (Ketch A Vibe Radio Show) – “This is just our bag. We love it!” Matt Sonzala (Radio KAOS) – “This dude is amazing. Been a fan for a while now and always happy to hear new jams from him. Excellent!”

Following up on the Icebound post from yesterday, I was considering having Sonic take a different route (or provide some combination of these routes as options for the player). This might result in cursory details of the game's story changing, but I think I'd be able to make it work without too much hassle.

Just a quick check-in: I'm strongly considering revisiting Sonic Icebound but I haven't any further ideas for how to expand on the concept or otherwise. Therefore, I am now reiterating that I am accepting ideas and material contributions to Icebound! Whether via inbox or via my Discord, I'd love to gauge what you people would like to see.

Sonic Icebound: Outposts
Tumblr media
You may recall Icebound featuring locations known as outposts. And you may have wondered what exactly they were. Wonder no more! The Sonic Icebound document has been updated to include basic lore about these outposts and a brief history of them.
To read the section by itself, check under the readmore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Outposts” are the umbrella term for any man-made research station, residential community, or other shelter or structure in Antarctica, both on the mainland and its surrounding islands.
The first outposts were constructed independently by expeditions that pioneered scientific research on Antarctica. Only a handful of these independent outposts were built, however, as brutal conditions made year-round residence in Antarctica nearly impossible.
Some time shortly after the ARK raid, G.U.N. and the United Federation commenced an extended joint scientific expedition to the South Pole. Strategic efforts were spearheaded by G.U.N. commander Abraham Tower, with the UF federal government providing funding and logistical support. As part of the program, research stations and residential communities were built en masse at the South Pole, with the expedition’s scope eventually expanding to cover the entire Antarctic continent. The expedition ran on-and-off for seventy-five years.
The expedition carried out research on virtually all aspects of Antarctica, from its climate to its flora and fauna to its potential viability for permanent human life. Researchers meticulously tested every kilometer of the continent, from the windy peaks to the frozen underground.
Unbeknownst to the public, the program also collaborated in secrecy with wealthy associates of the Robotniks. Some years later, Eggman would become directly involved in the expedition himself. He agreed to provide logistical support to the venture on the condition that the UF cede territorial control of parts of Antarctica to him personally. Eggman ostensibly planned to build power plants fueled by Chaos energy, but ultimately constructed multiple military bases and Badnik factories instead.
Not long after the Finalhazard incident, G.U.N. conducted what was to be a regularly-scheduled research evaluation. Upon arrival, however, all outposts were completely abandoned. Many of the researchers’ clothes and other personal belongings remained, suggesting the desertion was involuntary or forced. The most recent journal entries from many researchers seem to support this theory, but some earlier entries contradict later ones. Though multiple investigations were conducted over the next several years, the fates of the researchers are still unknown.

Although I haven't checked up on it lately, (I have problems reading bigger amounts of text sometimez,) Your Sonic Icebound things have inspired me to create my own Sonic game concepts!
Oh Anon! I’m so overjoyed to hear this!!! I’d love to see your concepts sometime (if you don’t mind, of course!).
I’d love to continue expanding upon Icebound, though I’ve been lacking in the ideas department for quite some time…
And the document definitely gets wordy, so I can definitely take note of how to improve readability there.
But I’m super excited to hear my concept has inspired you!

A suggestion for the icebound game, based on actual experiences: i think that, amongst the indiscernible sounds from nowhere, Sonic hallucinating his friends faintly calling his name like they’re far away would add to the horror. Especially if he’s hearing Tails trying to contact him from the radio transceiver, only to realize that it’s still broken. I can’t tell you how often it freaks me out to hear my dad’s popping joints from when he walks, while he’s asleep at 2am.
Oooh, I just might expand on that concept… a lot of stuff you could do with that.

I feel like Sonic should be given a couple alternative routes in Icebound but I'm not sure if that would disrupt the gameplay. Thoughts?

Quick word on Icebound: I’ve got stuff lined up for it but I may have to hold off on releasing an update until the Sonic Prime hype wears off during Christmas week. If you would like me to do it anyway, however, please let me know
