Look, I side-eye Viserys I a lot for:

A. Letting Aemma’s health get ruined by repeatedly putting her through pregnancies

B. Basically forcing Rhaenyra to marry Laenor against her wishes

C. Letting the greens consolidate power in King’s Landing while keeping Rhaenyra away in Dragonstone (even though he always intended for her to be queen) which weakened her position at court and allowed the greens to eventually do what they did when Viserys died

BUT

He loved Rhaenyra. He was a flawed father and husband and king but Fire and Blood made it clear that Rhaenyra was his most beloved child. Nowhere in the book was it suggested that he ever neglected her for not being a boy, if anything, he and Aemma showered her with love as their only surviving child. The reason he used to talk about a son was because of social norms, not because he himself saw Rhaenyra as lesser than. He named Nyra his heir when she was eight, not a teenager like she is in the show. He didn’t change his decision after having not one but three sons after her because he loved her that much. He wanted that crown to be hers. The fact that Viserys tried to change the succession norm after benefiting from it himself, all because of the love he had for his daughter was an interesting angle. And they really decided to take that away and make him a one-dimensional shitty father, constantly making his daughter feel devalued through text and subtext until the day came when he couldn’t bear to have his brother as his heir anymore. They didn’t have to do the character this dirty.

AND DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON GIVING AEMMA THE HORROR C SECTION THAT SHE NEVER HAD IN THE BOOK (Alyssa Velaryon did) AND MAKING IT VISERYS’ CALL TO CUT HER OPEN WHILE SHE WAS PROTESTING IN A DRUGGED STATE. NASTY.
