The increasing menace of stray elephants in the region has forced the government of the state to take drastic steps to curb the situation. The situation has been rendered worse by the constant complaints of the crop damage caused by these pachyderms and the inability of the government to tackle the problem. As a first step, the government of Uttarakhand has tied up with the wildlife institute of India (WII) to tranquilize about 6-10 elephants and fit a GPS enabled radio collars around their necks to start the monitoring process starting December 1.
The Rajaji National park has about 30 villages that have come under attack from these wild elephants, and thus, this monitoring system is set up to initially these local villages and set up an early warning system for the welfare of the same. There is an adjoining forest of Shyampur and Rasiyabad that have also accompanied the process problems involved with tackling the menace.
The course of action thus decided is that a team from WII will track the elephants and record their real-time locations, this information will be shared with the forest staff and guards along with village volunteer groups through the establishment of a mobile application.
A database will also be set up, and Artificial intelligence (AI) will be used to predict future movements of these tagged animals and predict beforehand the motions to be followed. There will also be a task force established to help have dry runs in the villages in order to better equip them to handle such scenarios in the future and how to ensure a minimum damage corpus when such situations arise in the future.
Barricades and trenches will also be brought in to the villages so that the pachyderms are discouraged from getting inside these villages, the problems of encroachment thus can be reduced stated a state official from the ministry of environment.
