Book 363
London / Honcon 1980
Shinro Ohtake
Yobisha 1986
I first encountered the art of Shinro Ohtake (b. 1955) it was album cover art for the band Throwing Muses. I think it was their live album, The Curse, released in 1992, and I was immediately taken with it. So when I came across this book some years later, I snatched it up. In 1980, Ohtake found himself in London and every day on the same park bench he would simply sketch. Later that year, he traveled to Hong Kong—to the isles of Xianggang, the port of Honcon—and continued his quick sketches. Taken from those journals, this art/travel book is the result. Enclosed within a very cool box, London/Honcon is a small and beautiful glimpse into the creative process.
