At first, you think you can survive this. Your ship is in pieces, your momentum catapulting you away from the wreck, the planet you call Alchera watching serenely as your life burns. You tell yourself, you’ve faced worse. The first time you fought death was the first breath you took, into lungs that weren’t ready, in a body too small and fragile to survive on its own. You struggled for days in a vessel adrift between our stars, an insignificant speck of heat in our cold universe, determined to burn as bright as a sun. When your mother finally held you for the first time, she showed you to us and asked if we were what you were in such a hurry to see for yourself. You have always been ours. You were ours when your father sang you to sleep while we gleamed through the shutters. You were ours when you rose for the first time on unsteady legs because you wanted to see us. You were ours when you felt our power come to life under your skin and understood that we are part of you in ways you’d never imagined. How many times did you palm the glow of dark matter in your hand and imagine you were one of us? But no matter how bright you burn now, it won’t be enough to save you. There is fear, now, but you swallow it back.    The second time you fought death it wasn’t your life you were fighting for. You begged, pleaded, to march into the unknown and rescue a father who didn’t come home, and when no one listened, you turned to us in the dark and begged to take his place. That was when you learned we could be cruel.   We felt your pain, we heard your anger, we wi ditnessed your tears and did nothing. And you forgave us. We wonder if you will forgive us now.

Don't know why I never thought to ask this, since it actually makes a difference to me as a reader, but — would you rather know when starting a long ME3 fic whether Shepard lives or dies at the end? Because on the one hand, the biggest spoiler, but on the other hand, fuck that depressing noise.

F1 AU Shep and Garrus would absolutely pick each other, and it's such an obvious choice that it feels like cheating so:

Shep

Ash. She's like the sister Shepard never had and Shepard is an honorary member of the Williams clan.

Ash is honest, capable, and cares so much about the people close to her, which I think Shepard really values. She's a great sounding board and an excellent person to have in your camp in a cutthroat sport.

I've got a throwaway line about Shepard anonymously paying off the Williams sisters' tuition every time one of them graduates, which I can't wait to find a use for.

Garrus

Tricky one - it's a toss-up between Tali and Sidonis.

His relationship with Tali is based on a strong foundation of incomprehensible arguments about engineering, and I think they get along for a lot of the same reasons Shep and Ash do: honesty, loyalty, and mutual competence.

Garrus and Sidonis were teammates in Formula 2 and Garrus gets him a drive at Archangel. I haven't thought much about the specifics yet, but I like Sidonis as this chronically serious dude who has to be goaded into loosening up (by Garrus of all people).

After Garrus's season-ending crash, Sidonis hands over info that incriminates the rest of the team in the mechanical failure that made the accident so serious, and I think that's the betrayal-equivalent for this AU. They patch up their relationship a few years later, though.

Pai was recruited as a child to train to serve in imperial intelligence, but now that she's finding herself on the front lines it's much harder to make the calls her superiors expect of her.

Jytte is a soldier. The thing that matters most is the mission seeing it through no matter the cost. After losing her entire family, service gave her something to focus on, a way to exist outside that grief and loneliness.

Onhattu wants to be a good jedi. She really does. it's just that sometimes the rules just don't make sense. Why should she spare those who've killed so many? Why should she always have to keep herself separate from others?

Dinah's worked damn hard to become detective at such a young age. She's always been driven, throwing herself into her studies and then her work and rarely making time for herself. Pulling double duty between the police department and the agency should be easy for her. If only her heart wasn't also pulling double duty torn between Nate and Adam.
