Tens of Thousands of Ancient Roman Coins Found off Sardinia
A diver who spotted something metallic not far from Sardinia’s coast has led to the discovery of tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins.
Italy’s culture ministry said Saturday that the diver alerted authorities, who sent divers assigned to an art protection squad along with others from the ministry’s undersea archaeology department.
The coins dating from the first half of the fourth century were found in sea grass, not far from the northeast shore of the Mediterranean island. The ministry didn't say exactly when the first diver caught a glimpse of something metallic just off shore Sardinia, not far from the town of Arzachena.
Exactly how many coins have been retrieved hasn’t been determined yet, as they are being sorted. A ministry statement estimated that there are at least about 30,000 and possibly as many as 50,000, given their collective weight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“All the coins were in an excellent and rare state of preservation,” the ministry said. The few coins that were damaged still had legible inscriptions, it said.
“The treasure found in the waters off Arzachena represent one of the most important coin discoveries," in recent years, said Luigi La Rocca, a Sardinian archaeology department official.
La Rocca added in a statement that the find is “further evidence of the richness and importance of the archaeological heritage that the seabed of our seas, crossed by men and goods from the most ancient of epochs, still keep and preserve.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firefighter divers and border police divers were also involved in locating and retrieving the coins.
The coins were mainly found in a wide area of sand between the underwater seagrass and the beach, the ministry said. Given the location and shape of the seabed, there could be remains of ship wreckage nearby, the ministry said.

Fashion first. Lab safety second. Ethics never. This is "Off The Deep End."
Welcome to Seabound Style: The Official Remaster.
Just like with my Twitter arrival in Spring 2021, I'm ringing in my triumphant return to The Superior Hellsite with a line of couture fashion sketches inspired by Ninjago: Seabound (without building a solid follower base first, of course, because of course I won't do that). This particular power suit, inspired by our favorite regicidal squid man Kalmaar, is the first in the series - and boy, do I have a lot to say under the cut.
(A quick note if you don't plan on reading further and just want to look at the art: this design and all future designs are meant to be viewed on a fullscreen desktop, so don't be afraid to zoom in!)
Affectionately nicknamed the Kalmaar Power Suit, this isn't just a design sketch - it's a whole origin story. These notes are going to be unreasonably long, but I promise they're worth a read. (You'll get some bonus content out of it, too!)
First off, the part you probably already know if you've seen my work before: Giles Panton's performance as Kalmaar in Seabound immediately clawed its way to the top of my list of Favorite Voice Acting Performances of All Time, where he's been slapping most other contenders off of the summit ever since. I was obsessed with Kalmaar's terrifying-yet-hilarious insane grad student energy right away, and I knew I had to do something about that. At the time, I was just dipping my toes into fanfiction for the first time and didn't think I could do him justice that way. (Still don't, by the way. Absolutely unhinged energy there, as proven by the Kalmaar Voice Request Open Season of November 2022.)
And then, the super secret part two of the story that I've never told: I took a closer look at Kalmaar's physical design and accidentally made the best design gamble of my life. Oh, and kicked off a very niche brand of fanart.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE KPS AND MY COUTURE SKETCH HOBBY: A TIMELINE
April, 2021: Thanks to my involvement in another internet project, I have an art app on my Chromebook and a short background in fashion concept design, so I figure: let's give Kalmaar a shot! I jot down some preliminary notes - okay, they basically just say "POWER SUIT FOR POWERFUL BOY", but they are notes. Concept out of the way? Cool. Time to grab that color palette.
For reasons I still don't get, Tommy Andreasen rings in Panton's participation with a high quality image of Kalmaar power posing. I snag that and start eyedropping colors, and then I notice something weird - something I had initially passed off as body markings.
Tumblr media
Is... is that the edge of a jacket?...wait. My concept has a jacket involved. Okay, well, I guess we're committed whether or not that's a jacket or body markings! It's too good of an opportunity. Having never done a design on this scale (and only knowing how to use three brushes in my art app), I fumble my way through what is - at the time - my magnum opus. (Oh, 2021 me...)
April 20, 2021: I join Twitter, throw the design at Panton in the midst of his fanart-reaction and fan-engaging spree, and damn near die when he responds, even though this is par for the course at the time.
April 25, 2021: "The Tale of Benthomaar" airs. Having mostly forgotten about the body-marking-or-jacket debate from earlier, I get smacked in the face by the image of kid Kalmaar wearing.... hold on, that's not what he looked like last time.
Tumblr media
Sailor suit? Sailor suit. That's a sailor suit!
Listen. Look at that clasp. Look at the wrist markings. THERE IS A DISTINCT COLLAR THERE THAT CONTINUES DOWNWARDS. I am, apparently, some kind of fashion oracle. A question that no rational human has ever asked - "Do humanoid squids wear clothing?" - has been answered.
And, in my first real foray into fashion design, I have apparently subconsciously picked up on it. Empowered by my surprise title of Fashion Oracle, I keep going, and pretty soon I've posted an entire thread that I've titled Seabound Style.
Every Date After That One, Up Until Now: I keep doing character-inspired fashion sketches and eventually graduate to bringing in hefty doses of analysis. I learn more about my art app and get good at using it.
And what do I do with those skills?
Something social media loves to see: I look back at my old designs and realize that I can do better.
And now, here we are.
Updates And Symbolic Breakdown
It should be noted that - for the most part - Kalmaar's about as deep as a tide pool. It's a refreshing change, honestly! Ninjago's got a rich tradition of villains nursing highly specific grudges for ridiculous periods of time, which is wonderful. Kalmaar, on the other hand, just hates everyone. Equal opportunity discrimination at its finest. Some people cite that shallow motive as a reason for Kalmaar not being a great villain, but I actually think it's a neat narrative strategy. Sometimes, people are just horrible for no reason! No grudges, no real wrongdoing, just a nerd who spends a little too much time researching eldritch horrors and practicing taser skills.
As it happens, displaying that shallowness through symbolism is not easy. I will admit that - as with a lot of my art - the elements sometimes happen first, and the symbolism comes later (usually on accident!). Sometimes, I do get a symbolic idea before I start sketching, in which case I'll build off of that. Mostly, though, it's all happy coincidences. In this case, I tried to preserve most of the original design, then elaborated on what was already present. Most of this design is and always has been based on his physical appearance, although I've slipped in what symbolism I can.
For reference, here's the original version of the Kalmaar Power Suit, in all its untextured glory:
Tumblr media
Yeesh. Good foundation, I'll give my past self that - but I can do better now. In the new design, I introduced all kinds of fun symbols and techniques.
First up: technical stuff, like shading, proper textures, better lineart, and a refreshed color palette. Most of this manifests in the base of the suit itself, which I've given a speckled texture and a slight blush tone to better reflect Kalmaar's canon appearance.
Presenting even more dangly chain bits! Looking back, I've realized just how much of Kalmaar's appearance and the KPS carry over into my body of work now (you'll see what I mean as I work on transferring my other art over and progress through this series). Truly a style icon. In conjunction with the spearhead pins, the chains on the collar, waist, and hand jewelry are meant to call to mind Kalmaar's armored belt and asymmetrical chest drape.
I kept the honor-society-esque lapel pin and chains to lean into Kalmaar's scholarly background, but I turned the collar pins into tiny anchors as a subtle nod to his subtle weekend hobby of sinking ships. (I mean, not that subtle near the end, but he didn't seem to have to work too hard to hide it...) The other pins, such as the blazer clasp, boot dangly accents, and lapel pin, are all traced from the spear-like emblems dangling from Kalmaar's armor.
Kalmaar's gill-like torso slats have been reimagined as false pockets (so shallow there's literally nothing in there!)
The blue and pink edging embroidery are now 1. visible and 2. arranged in the right way.
The Merlopian representation is sparse to reflect his loyalty to himself - it tops out at the Art Deco shell texturing on the lapels and skirt lining. I chose this pattern because it closely resembles the throne room: his first major attack site and a goal he kept under wraps until the opportunity to stage a coup (couppertunity?) arrived.
You might have noticed that there's no amulet representation! As with the original (yes, I remember my excuse now), it's weird to think he'd tote both of them around with him in any capacity. The minute he got the Storm Amulet, the first thing he did was rush it home and fire it up. I did originally toy with incorporating the amulets into the handbag or the jewelry, but it ended up looking like too much (and not in a fun Kalmaarish way, either). Besides, those aren't his to control...
Speaking of the handbag, that got a complete overhaul! Both iterations represent his trident in some way. The original clutch purse is a more obvious representation, but I ended up not liking it when I began work on this revamp. A friend of mine (thanks, Nora!) suggested I lean into the Art Deco influence and go for something a little more avant-garde. Enter a handbag inspired by a glass nautical float, with copious fringe and a trident-shaped closure up top. I opted for a sickly acid green colordropped directly from Kalmaar's eyes for the glass ball (mainly because it was a cool shade I hadn't gotten to use), and wrapped it in a golden net. Historically, fishermen used these floats to keep their nets afloat, which I think has a fun double meaning here. One, it reflects Kalmaar's strategy of manipulation and entrapment via false innocence; two, he definitely took one or two of these from shipwrecks as souvenirs. I bet he used them as paperweights.
Although I did like the personal touch that it lent the finished art, I decided to nix the handwritten titles in favor of bringing in a texturing some custom lettering from Canva. Unfortunately, I made a very bad choice of font (after it was too late to change it, of course). It's not that I dislike the font - I fully intend to keep it for this series and possibly others - but I woke up the morning after I finished this piece and realized I'd accidentally made the damn thing look like a loading screen tip.
Which leads into the promised bonus content: this awful thing I made as fast as humanly possible.
Tumblr media
I can't defend this. I won't try. This isn't quite as insensitive as the underground infamy that is "Ice Bear Is In", but it does not feel right.
So let's do some nicer bonus content, shall we? Here's the backdrop for "Off The Deep End," which you can use as a wallpaper, if you'd like to! I'm trying to make all the backdrops as cool as the pieces they support.
Tumblr media
Anyway, you made it to the end! Yay! I promise the next posts won't be as long now that I've got the backstory out of the way. If you have any questions about my work, please ask me. I love feedback. I live for feedback.

Who are we: the indigenous inhabitants of the planet or the descendants of impudent invaders?
Tumblr media
Today, in scientific circles, the idea is actively exaggerated that before the appearance of the first Neanderthals, our planet belonged to aquatic primates. The Swedish naturalist Jan Lindblad spoke about the fact that intelligent life originated in water bodies in the last century. Lindblad put forward a hypothesis that intelligent waterfowl lived in numerous fresh lakes. With the onset of the global glacier, their range has greatly decreased. Some of them had to adapt to life in the seas, and some moved to land. It is from those who could survive on the earth's firmament that our species originates. By the way, this theory goes well with the well-known fact of the confrontation between Neanderthals and our direct ancestors - the Cro-Magnons. If official science, by separating these two species, cannot reliably determine where the latter came from, then the Swede's hypothesis explains everything logically. At the same time, if we follow Lindblad's way of thinking, then it is worth looking for our siblings on the ocean floor. His version is confirmed by numerous legends and myths of almost all cultures of the world. Even the ancient Sumerians had a legend about the mysterious and wise race of fish people. The chronicle source says that in ancient times these creatures came out of the depths of the sea and settled among people.
Tumblr media
Oannes. Sumerian mythology. Tradition has preserved even the name of their leader. By the way, there is no question of any conflict in this case. Fish people did not take over human settlements as they were much smarter. More advanced, they offered gifts to the human tribe. It was not gold and precious stones, it was knowledge. Sea creatures taught man to process metals, to properly cultivate fields as well as as teach people with writing skills. Legends about them, although unusual, have been preserved as grateful memories. A Sumerian written source describes the sea ruler Oannes as follows: “His whole body was like the body of a fish, under the fish head he had another head, and below his legs, like a man, but attached to the tail of a fish. His voice and language were human and articulate; the idea of him is still alive." Not only the Sumerian chroniclers talk about the mysterious underwater race. There are many references to aquatic creatures in ancient Indian literature. The inhabitants of the sea depths in it are called "nivatakawachi", which translates as "dressed in invulnerable shells."
Tumblr media
In the Mahabharata epic, there is a chapter in which god Indra demands payment from the hero Arjuna for training in the art of war: “I have enemies - danavas, they are called nivatakavachs; but it is difficult to reach them: they live, climbing into the depths of the ocean. They say that there are millions of them, as for selection, they are equal in appearance and full of strength. Defeat them there! Let this be your payment to the teacher." According to the Indian chronicle, it turns out that an almost omnipotent god sends his best disciple to destroy some previously unknown sea race. It seems that the inhabitants of the seabed greatly interfered with the new masters of the planet. The bloodthirstiness of the gods of the Indian pantheon is not surprising but the Mahabharata allows us to draw another conclusion. It seems that the inhabitants of the underwater world were (and maybe still are) the indigenous inhabitants of the Earth and the gods, whether Indian or Greek, act as uninvited guests. They broke into the fragile ecosystem of the planet uninvited and began to reshape it at their own discretion. Who knows, perhaps there are no more intelligent terrestrial endemics left, and all of us are distant descendants of arrogant invaders. This explains the barbaric attitude of human civilization to the ecosystem of the "native" planet. Perhaps our collective unconscious still perceives Earth as a temporary home. Read the full article

Here, have a rec list of games where the sole qualifying criterion is that the protagonist is a little whatsit in a hood and robe whose only visible features are a pair of glowing eyes:
Argus Panoptes – A puzzle-platformer with shades of the frustration genre (e.g., Getting Over It) whose core mechanics might best be described as “miniature golf from hell”; not for the faint-hearted. Features some very striking low-bit artwork.
FAR: Lone Sails – A contemplative walking sim (a recurring genre for this list!) with some platforming where you guide a landship across a dry seabed. Note: the glowing eyes are not visible on the protagonist’s tiny in-game model, but appear in official art.
The Last Campfire – A hybrid walking sim mixing linear exploration with Legend of Zelda block-pushing. The puzzle difficulty sits mostly at children’s game level, but the themes turn toward heavy mortality stuff in the final act; fair warning!
Path of Giants – A turn based environment-manipulation puzzler where you play as a trio of colour-coded whatsits trying to make their way up a mountain, which somehow involves pressing lots of buttons. The puzzles are good; the party banter is better.
The Treehouse Man – Here’s an odd blend of genres: a pseudo-turn-based bullet hell walking sim. Based on that description, you either love it or hate it already, and that initial impression is probably accurate. Grindier than you’d expect.
Unbound: Worlds Apart – A precision puzzle-platformer whose protagonist can warp the local laws of physics, with effects ranging from transforming objects to reversing gravity. Fantastic art direction and worldbuilding, though the animations are stiff.
Wizard of Legend – A wizard-centric action roguelike where your character build and your spellbook are the same thing. Not much story to speak of, but if you’re looking for a fireball-chucking fix there are few better options.

Look, Louts! Lilies! - Yuri For A Hope-Flung Present and Hopeful Future
Look, I’ll be frank. I typically try to keep to a more formal tone when I write for this blog. I’m not in a formal mood. It is June October 2020, and I, like the rest of you, have been under quarantine for a little over three almost seven months now due to the Covid-19 virus. Throw in a eensy, teensy bit of massive political movements and change in response to police violence and racism, and an increase of police violence and racism in response to those movements, and I think it’s fair to say it’s been a tumultuous couple of months. Except, strangely, it also hasn’t been, because so much of this time has been characterized by ennui and isolation. Stressful, yet soul-numbing. In short, it’s been a very weird place to be in.
So, we’ve all found our different ways to cope. My sister’s way has been getting really into succulents(?), and my way has been buying digital manga and video games. I’ve finished stuff I’ve put off for literal years and bought stuff I had heard was good but wasn’t that hyped to get into. And somehow, the one thing I’ve really gotten into has been yuri?
Now, yuri has a very long and rich history, as well as its own sets of conventions and nuances, so it is with a great, great, GREAT deal of respect that I say that I’m going to simplify it for this essay as “Japanese media with a particular focus on romance between women” for brevity’s sake. If you want to know more, there’s actually quite a lot that’s been written about it in English, but I’m aiming this essay at English-speakers who have had at least a little experience with yuri and more than just passing knowledge.
Because you see, I’ve found that yuri fans have a lot of things to say about yuri! And a lot of those things really bug me!! “Yuri is only fetish quasi-porn written by men,” “yuri is only bland wholesome fluff,” “yuri is only high school drama,” so on, so on. It made me mad, but it also made me realize something: a lot of people simply must not know how big this field of lilies truly is! How else can we get people saying “yuri is oversexualized” and “yuri is sexless” as gospel truth? Something’s not adding up here, guys!
So, all that is to say I’m doing something different for this blog: I’m writing up a recommendation list of yuri. A large chunk of it will be stuff I’ve read and can officially give my seal of approval to, while some of them are just titles I’ve heard of that I think will interest others. All of them have been specifically chosen to counter common untrue things I’ve heard about yuri as a whole. I hope you can find at least a few things on this list that you will enjoy and help you keep your head as the encroaching darkness lurches yet a few inches closer!
1. “Yuri is all schoolgirl stuff! Where’s the sci-fi, the period pieces, the action, the fantasy?”

Otherside Picnic
What It Is: A light novel series written by Iori Miyazawa (illustrated by shirakaba). Ongoing, four volumes at time of writing. The story is being adapted into a manga by Eita Mizuno, and an anime adaptation directed by Takuya Satou will be airing in January 2021.
What It’s About: It was on her third trip to the Otherside that Sorawo Kamikoshi almost died, and it was on that same trip she was saved by an angel. Toriko Nishina is a beautiful and confident young woman who also happens to have intimate knowledge of the Otherside, a dangerous yet captivating world that Sorawo can’t help but being drawn to. Toriko convinces Sorawo to join her on her expeditions to the Otherside, fighting off bizarre creatures that have somehow been ripped out of Japanese urban legends and finding strange artifacts in order to make a little extra cash-- all the while keeping an eye out for someone dear to Toriko’s heart.
What I Think: Otherside Picnic is heavily inspired by the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and features several creatures and scenarios from ghost stories, net lore, and-- there’s no other way to put this-- creepypasta. On paper this sounds deeply unoriginal, so it’s pretty surprising that OP has an incredibly strong identity. The idea of fusing horror with a yuri love story excited me enough the moment I heard about it, so when I finally got to read it for myself, I was delighted to find that the horror elements and the romance elements are both quite strong.
I will say that thanks to the author’s commitment to following his sources of inspiration to the letter sometimes causes him to undercut his own writing (good example: in one arc there’s an ominous train that keeps being mentioned, causing the reader to dread its arrival with each passing page, but seeing what’s on the train will inevitably fall flat in comparison to the reader’s imagination), but those moments are made up by the more original moments-- the things that are left unseen and unexplained.
The place where the story truly shines is the relationship between the two leads. Sorawo and Toriko are great characters, both incredibly charming and deeply flawed, and they achieve a great chemistry with each other right off the bat. Sorawo is a very interesting protagonist, one who turns out to have a deeply tragic past that has made her into a reclusive, somewhat selfish young woman. What’s great is that Toriko, vivacious and confident, everything Sorawo isn’t, accepts this part of her, in a way. Toriko flat out admits she’s not looking for a particularly virtuous person to accompany her, but an “accomplice.” A big part of the appeal of OP is seeing these two “accomplices” bounce off each other, and eventually come to care about each other, all playing against a background of some genuinely spine-crawling horror. Otherside Picnic is a truly underrated series, and I deeply hope that the anime adaption next year will finally get it all the eyes it deserves (menacing phrasing very much intended).
Where To Get It: The light novels are published by J-Novel Club and can be found via various digital platforms and bookstores. The manga will be published by Square Enix Books starting May 2021. The anime will start airing on January 4th, 2021.

Goodbye My Rose Garden
What It Is: A manga by Dr. Pepperco. Three volumes, complete. It inspired a stage play that ran for a while in Japan, but not much information is available about it in English.
What It’s About: Hanako has two goals: to meet Victor Franks, the mysterious author who pens the books she adores, and to become a writer herself. Despite having the mettle to travel to England on her own to pursue her dreams, she soons finds that it’s difficult for a young, unwed Japanese woman to dream in 20th century London. However, her luck seems to turn around when she meets Alice Douglas, a noblewoman who offers her a job as her maid-- as well as a surprisingly warm friendship. Alice even offers Hanako a way to meet her idol… but at the price of a horrifying request.
What I Think: In the afterword of Volume 1, Dr. Pepperco openly admits that Goodbye, My Rose Garden was the result of them trying to marry all of their favorite tropes (“Victorian maids! Loads of frills! An English family manor!” are some standout items), and this is apparent in the best way possible. GMRG is a lush period piece that will likely appeal to fans of movies like The Handmaiden and Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, with loving attention paid to details like clothes and settings.
The relationship between Alice and Hanako is quite charming, with Alice supporting Hanako as much as she can while still taking every available opportunity to tease her, while Hanako constantly surprises Alice each time she shows her moxie and strength. It’s an adorable, sweet dynamic, yet a dark, melancholy weight lurks in the background in the form of Alice’s request-- in short, it’s a relationship that feels tailor made for me. Still, I believe this “darkness” never threatens to overwhelm the story, only enhance it in such a way that the reader will soldier on, hoping for a happy ending for our two leads. With an engaging plot and gorgeous art, this is a great manga for both longtime yuri fans and newcomers looking for an introduction to the world of yuri.
Where To Get It: Seven Seas Entertainment has translated the first two volumes, with the final one coming to English soon all three volumes into English.
Tumblr media
Seabed
What It Is: A visual novel by paleontology, a Japanese doujin circle.
What It’s About: Mizuno Sachiko is a designer who is haunted by visions of Takako, her vivacious childhood friend and former lover. Narasaki Hibiki is a psychiatrist who wants to help Sachiko make sense of these hallucinations. Takako is… confused, trying to figure out why she keeps losing her memory and why she and Sachiko drifted apart despite being so close. Seabed is a story that spans the pasts and presents of these three women as they attempt to find and understand the truth.
What I Think: At first glance, Seabed seems simple, but it’s a bit of a hard story to explain. In a way, there isn’t much to explain-- it’s a very slow, down-to-earth story that gets almost tedious at times. I think it would be a hard sell to someone who isn’t used to visual novels, but I could imagine it being challenging even for fans. All I’ll say is this: if you give Seabed a chance, it will draw you into a surreal, gentle, melancholy tale akin to slowly sinking beneath the water of a strange, yet not unfriendly sea. For its simplicity, it’s got quite a few surprises in its long, long runtime, and any attempt to explain further will just ruin an experience that’s meant to wash over the reader over time. The only thing I’ll say is the one thing I think everyone knows: the climax will make you cry.
Where To Get It: Seabed is published in English through Fruitbat Factory and is available on Steam, Itch.io, and Nintendo Switch.
Tumblr media
SHWD
What It Is: A manga by Sono. Ongoing.
What It’s About: Sawada is one of the few women working for the Special Hazardous Waste Disposal, and the only one in her office. But that changes when the stunningly-strong yet staggeringly-sweet Koga is hired, and the two become close in no time. Sawada trains Koga and soon the two go on their first mission to dispose of the “hazardous waste” left after a recent war… the dangerous, organic anti-human weapons known as the Dynamis.
What I Think: SHWD opens with several close-ups of Sawada’s arm muscles as she works out. I have found that page alone is sometimes enough to convince someone to read SHWD, and if not, pictures of Sawada and-- especially-- Koga are often enough to do the job. In all seriousness, what I love about SHWD can be summarized by something Sono said in an interview about the manga:
‘The first motivating force was "I want to write a yuri manga featuring strong women." I was very drawn to strong female characters by watching "PERSON of INTEREST" and "Assassin's Creed Odyssey." However, I felt that I should differentiate myself by doing something other than a "strong woman" and "weak woman" dynamic. So, I thought about coupling women with different types of strength. This is why all of the SHWD main characters are "strong women."’
It’s a mindset I love a lot. Koga is remarkably strong in a physical sense, but her mental fortitude is fragile due to her past experiences with the Dynamis, and as such, it’s Sawada who uses her immense mental strength to support her. Indeed, every character in SHWD so far bears intense trauma born of the Dynamis in some way, and it’s hard to see how their pasts still hurt them in the present. But that just makes it satisfying to see these women come together to support one another. SHWD drew me in with a unique and often dark action-oriented story with horror elements, but it’s this idea of “strong women” who make up for each other’s weaknesses that really makes it dear to me.
Also, it can’t be stated enough that Sono is so so so so so (etc) good at drawing muscular women.
On a completely unrelated note, there’s a side story about Koga and Sawada playing sports together. This includes judo. I am saying this for no reason.
Where To Get It: The English translation of the manga is released in chapters by Lilyka Manga.
Tumblr media
Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked Me Out, So I Teamed Up With a Mythical Sorceress!
What It Is: A two volume light novel series by Ameko Kaeruda, illustrated by Kazutomo Miya. Possibly complete.
What It’s About: Tanya Artemiciov is an absurdly talented Mage. So why the hell was she kicked out of her adventuring party? Her leader and former friend sums it up in four words: “You’re a woman, Tanya.” In a fit of rage, Tanya channels her anger into a “venting” session that involves swearing her head of and casting a volley of Explosion spells into the wasteland… and accidentally releases a legendary sorceress! Luckily, Laplace is actually quite nice, and just as powerful as the legends say, so the two decide to team up so Tanya can have her revenge!
What I Think: So, this is a silly one, but after a couple of darker entries I think it’s a good palate cleanser. Sexiled is a loud, not-even-remotely subtle, unabashedly feminist take on the “power fantasy” light novel, especially the “revenge fantasy” subgenre-- and even if that sounds awesome on paper to you (ex. me), it will probably feel over-the-top at times to you (ex. me). But in a way, that’s actually kind of its charm.
I like that Kaeruda utterly refuses to let up on what she wants to tell you, especially because the story was inspired by a real case in Japan. One may be tempted to think “this story is ridiculous, no one would ever be this cartoonishly sexist!” and then you read a news article about how in a famous Japanese medical university was found rigging the test scores of women, and you realize, “oh, people are still this cartoonishly sexist.” So I’m fine with Kaeruda letting it all out in this story. At the same time, I think Sexiled is best when it’s focused not on Tanya’s revenge but on her kindness, and the way her compassion, her strength, and yes, her anger inspires the women and girls around her.
Tumblr media
Sexiled is a fun and often very funny romp about assholes getting theirs, with some surprisingly deep and nuanced moments hiding in a very unsubtle story.
Where To Get It: The light novels are published by J-Novel Club and can be found via various digital platforms and bookstores.
BONUS: Other titles with sci-fi/fantasy/action elements that may interest you!
The Blank Of Describer: A one-shot manga by kkzt about a pair of two dream-builders. And then comes the kicker: the customer asks the two of them to give it features that the both of them “adore the most…” (Published in English by Lilyka Manga)
A Lily Blooms In Another World: A light novel by Ameko Kaeruda (illustrated by Shio Sakura), author of Sexiled, about Miyako, a Japanese wage slave reincarnated into another world based on her favorite otome game. However, she’s not interested in her would-be love interest, but in Fuuka Hamilton-- the game’s villainess! After Miyako confesses her love, Fuuka decides to give her a challenge: if Miyako can make her say the words “I’m happy” in fourteen days, she’ll stay by her side! (To be published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, coming in April 2021)
2. “Yuri is all stories about teenagers! Where’s the stuff about adults?”
Take a look at the previous section: there’s the stuff about adults! Otherside Picnic, Goodbye My Rose Garden, Seabed, SHWD, Sexiled, The Blank of Describer, A Lily Blooms In Another World, and Superwomen In Love are all stories with adult-aged protagonists! But if you’re searching for a more down-to-earth romance, I’m happy to report there’s quite a bit of options to look into!

Still Sick
What It Is: A manga by Akashi. Three volumes, complete.
What It’s About: Makoto Shimizu is an office lady with a secret: she’s a yuri fan who draws doujinshi. She’s able to keep her two lives separate, all until the day she comes face-to-face with her co-worker at a convention! To Makoto’s horror, Akane Maekawa is amused by her nerdy secret, but Akane may have some secrets of her own...
What I Think: This one was a roller coaster for me: I loved the premise of the manga, but wasn’t sure about the dynamic between the leads… that is, until near the end of the first volume, where something happened and everything changed. Without giving too much away, I implore people to give Still Sick a chance-- it has a much deeper story than one might initially guess, as well as an interesting character dynamic between the two leads with some surprising turns.
Where To Get It: The first two volumes of Still Sick are published in English by Tokyopop, with the final one coming soon All three volumes have been published in English by Tokyopop.

After Hours
What It Is: A manga by Yuhta Nishio. Three volumes, complete.
What It’s About: After being ditched by her friend at a club, Emi Ashiana is ready to write the whole night off. All that changes when she meets Kei, a DJ who seems to be everything Emi is not-- cool, confident… employed.... But Kei and Emi hit it off and Emi’s life changes as Kei draws her into the world of Japan’s club scene!
What I Think: It’s hard to explain exactly why I like this manga, but I reeeeally like this manga.
Tumblr media
There’s just something about the sleek art, the amazing atmosphere of the scenes set in nightclubs, the chemistry between Emi and Kei, the focus on more mature topics.... it’s a manga that’s remarkably magnetic for how down-to-earth it is. It’s also just interesting to read stories about subcultures that don’t normally get a spotlight in comics. To sum it up, After Hours is just a lovely manga that’s severely underrated that’s perfect for someone who’s looking for a story that’s both fun and mature.
Where To Get It: All three volumes are published in English by Viz Media.
Tumblr media
How Do We Relationship?
What It Is: A manga by Tamifull. Ongoing, five volumes at time of writing.
What It’s About: Miwa and Saeko’s first meeting is… interesting. But despite that, and despite their clashing personalities, the two of them become fast friends. Well… actually, perhaps more than friends. You see, pretty soon the two of them learn that the other is into women. With that in mind, Saeko suggests they try dating each other-- might as well, right? “Might as well” seems like a strange place to begin a relationship, but perhaps even something like that could end in true love?
What I Think: “Why do romances always end when they decide to start dating?!” That’s the question Tamifull poses in the afterword of Volume 1. And it’s a great question! What makes How Do We Relationship? an interesting manga is how oddly realistic it is, highlighting things like the compromises people make in relationships, people who get into relationships for pragmatic reasons rather than love, the whole “thing” about sex… as well as highlighting the additional issues queer people have to deal with. That may sound like a heavy story, but it’s actually quite light-hearted, as well as very, very funny at times. With a cute art style and surprisingly deep premise, HDWR is a great manga for older yuri fans who are craving a more mature story.
Where To Get It: The first volume has been published in English by Viz Media, with more on the way.
BONUS: Other titles with adult protagonists that may interest you!
Even Though We’re Adults: A manga by Takako Shimura about two women in their thirties. Ayano and Akari meet each other in a bar and almost immediately feel a sense of chemistry between them. There’s just one problem: Ayano is married to someone else. (To be published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, coming in January 2021)
Doughnuts Under A Crescent Moon: A manga by Shio Usui. Uno Hinako wants nothing more than to be seen as a normal young woman, but she just can’t seem to make a “normal” romance work. But maybe Sato Asahi, a woman who works at the same company as her, can show her a new kind of normal? (To be published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, coming in February 2021)
Our Teachers Are Dating: A manga by Pikachi Ohi. Hayama Asuka is a gym teacher, Terano Saki is a biology teacher. One day, they come into work both looking suspiciously happy… because they’ve started dating! (Published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment)
I Married My Best Friend To Shut My Parents Up: A one-volume manga by Kodama Naoko. Morimoto is sick and tired about constantly being badgered about finding a man to marry, so her kouhai from her high school days offers a solution: marry each other to make her parents back off! (Published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment)
Now Loading…!: A one-volume manga by Mikan Uji. Takagi has just snagged her dream job at a games publisher, but being put in charge of a mobile game that’s barely pulling in any attention isn’t exactly what she was hoping for. What’s worse, she’s drawn the attention of her strict higher-up Sakurazuki Kaori… who also happened to design her most favorite game of all time?! (Published in English through Seven Seas Entertainment)
3.  “Yuri is all schoolgirl stuff! Where’s- wait, didn’t we already do this one?”
Yes we did. And you know what? I’m making a stand! There’s a lot of really, really good yuri stories set in high schools, and I think more people need to give them a chance! Here are some high school titles that I think are worth a second look for one reason or another!
Tumblr media
Bloom Into You
What It Is: A manga by Nakatani Nio. Eight volumes, complete. A twelve episode anime aired in 2018, covering about the first half of the series. A three volume spinoff light novel series written by Hitoma Iruma was also published.
What It’s About: Yuu Koito has long dreamed of the day she’d find That One, Storybook Romance that would make her feel like she was walking on air, but the day that a boy confesses to her, her feet remain firmly planted on the ground. When she meets Touko Nanami, a girl who seems to have the same strange, distant relationship to romance as she does, Yuu feels like she has found a comrade. But what will happen when the next person to confess to Yuu… is Touko?
What I Think: What can I say about Bloom Into You that hasn’t already been said? There’s a reason it’s basically considered a staple of yuri despite being only five years old. The art is beautiful and delicate, the story has a deft mastery of comedy, drama, and romance, and the characters are deeply loveable. Really, the only reason this one is here is to tell you to get to reading this manga (or watching the anime) if you haven’t already. So get to it!
Where To Get It: The entire series-- as well as the spinoff light novel series Regarding Saeki Sayaka-- has been published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. The anime is currently streaming on HiDive.

Yuri Is My Job
What It Is: A manga by Miman. Ongoing, seven volumes at time of writing.
What It’s About: Hime wants nothing more than to be adored by everyone and to someday bag a rich husband. Of course, being loved by all takes a lot of work, and she prides herself in keeping her perfect, adorable facade so well-maintained. But of course, the one time she slips up, she ends up injuring the manager of a local cafe! Hime finds herself strong-armed into working for this cafe under their star employee, a kind, graceful girl named Mitsuki. But things aren’t quite so simple-- you see, this cafe has a gimmick in which all the employees are constantly acting out yuri-inspired scenes for the customers, so in a way, the employees also have their own facades. And under her facade, Mitsuki… hates Hime’s guts!
What I Think: Yuri Is My Job is an odd duck, but in a good way. It’s advertised and initially framed as a comedy, but it becomes a surprisingly thoughtful drama about the personas people adopt and why they do so (though, luckily, the comedy never truly goes away). There’s an interesting web of relationships between the girls, and having those interactions take place in a setting where they must act out a completely different sort of drama adds an extra level of drama and intrigue. The cute, polished artwork is just the icing on the cake. YIMJ is a good manga for those who are already familiar with yuri tropes and those who are interested in a drama that doesn’t get too heavy.
Where To Get It: Six volumes have been published in English by Kodansha comics, with the seventh on the way.
Tumblr media
Riddle Story of Devil
What It Is: A manga written by Yun Kouga and illustrated by Sunao Minakata. Five volumes, complete. A 12 episode anime aired in 2014.
What It’s About: At Myojo Private School, an elite all-girl’s academy, Class Black has a secret. Twelve of the thirteen girls are actually assassins who have been offered a dark deal-- one wish will be granted to whoever manages to kill Haru Ichinose, the thirteenth student. But there’s still hope for Haru in the form of Tokaku Azuma, one of the assassins who has decided to defect to Haru’s side-- and defend her from the other girls at any cost.
What I Think: I’m not sure… if I can say Riddle Story of Devil is “good.” It’s definitely something. Although its premise is vaguely similar to Revolutionary Girl Utena, its tone and atmosphere remind me a lot more of the Dangan Ronpa series. It’s schlocky and ridiculous and often over-the-top and at times exploitative. It’s pure junk food, basically… and I believe that’s where the charm comes from. It’s my guiltiest of guilty pleasures. It may not exactly be good, but more often than not, it’s fun. It’s hard not to be immediately interested in a yuri battle series, you have to admit.
And if it does have one undeniably good element, it’s Tokaku and Haru’s relationship. They contrast each other nicely, and while one might expect Haru to be boring and helpless, she’s actually quite proactive at times, and some of the most interesting, engaging parts of the series come from seeing how the two work together to fend off the latest assassin. It’s a short read and if anything, it’s worth it to see how each girl ends up. I recommend it for older viewers who are okay with violence and ludicrous battle scenarios.
Where To Get It: All five volumes are available through Seven Seas Entertainment. The anime can be watched through Funimation.*
*Please don’t watch the anime.**
** At the very least, please don’t watch the anime unless you’ve read the entire manga. Riddle Story Of Devil was one of those unfortunate cases where the anime adaption was produced before the manga reached its conclusion, and as such it has a very strange, rushed ending that includes none of what I enjoyed about the actual ending. Several scenes were also changed, and if I recall correctly, fanservice was added in several places where there was none previously. All in all, I’d really only recommend it for big fans of the series.

Side By Side Dreamers
What It Is: A light novel by Iori Miyazawa, illustrated by Akane Malbeni. One volume, complete.
What It’s About: Saya Hokage has been suffering from insomnia, but one day finds relief in the form of Hitsuji Konparu, a strange girl who can put people to sleep. As it turns out, Hitsuji is a person who has the special ability to move freely in their dreams, known as a “Sleepwalker.” The Sleepwalkers have been battling beings that possess people through their dreams, and it turns out they want Saya to join them in the fight.
What I Think: Side By Side Dreamers is short and… well, dreamy. I really enjoyed the premise and I think it’s a good novel for people who think Otherside Picnic may be a little too much for them. I also enjoyed each dream sequence-- I tend to find that the writing in light novels is a little dry, so the use of figurative language to describe these scenes was really refreshing and interesting. SBSD is a fun oneshot that I think is especially ideal for newcomers to yuri.
Where To Get It: Side-by-Side Dreamers is published by J-Novel Club and can be found via various digital platforms and bookstores.
Tumblr media
Cocoon Entwined
What It Is: A manga by Yuriko Hara. Three volumes, ongoing.
What It’s About: Hoshimiya Girls' Academy is a strange, almost otherworldly paradise with a peculiar tradition. For all three years, each girl grows out her hair to absurd, breathtaking lengths, in order for it to eventually be cut and weaved into uniforms for future students. Perhaps it is these strange uniforms that seem to whisper about the past that makes the school seem frozen in another time… picturesque, yet stagnant. But one day, a shocking incident shatters the quiet peace of the academy, and the tumultuous feelings that have long been hidden in the hearts of these girls come rushing into the light.
What I Think: Cocoon Entwined is, in a word, eerie. It’s not marketed as a horror story, and I don’t think it’s intended to be one, but I’ve seen some that say they get horror vibes from it. I definitely understand that-- there’s a deep sense of unease that permeates the entire story in a way that’s a bit hard to articulate. The running thread of uniforms made from human hair definitely doesn’t hurt (it does-- I’ve seen many people understandably turned off by this element), but it’s more than that. It’s the sense that everything at Hoshimiya feels frozen and fragile. It’s the sense that everyone is burying their true feelings under countless layers. It’s the fact that in one scene, Saeki reaches out in a dark room full of uniforms and feels her arm touched by countless hands made of hair.
Tumblr media
Cocoon Entwined is a strange manga, and I feel it’s not for everyone-- besides the way many are put off by the central premise, the way that the story jumps around in time can be a bit confusing to follow. But in my opinion, I love it for these elements: the uniforms and their marriage between beauty and grotesque, the sense of frozen time, the delicate artwork that feels like it might be shattered by the weight of your gaze, the strange, airless atmosphere, the girls and their clear exhaustion of having to be ideal women. It’s a strange little series that I think should be given a shot, particularly if you want something a little more out there, or a darker take on Class S tropes.
Where To Get It: Yen Press has currently published two volumes in English.
BONUS: Other high school titles that may interest you!
A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow: A manga by Makoto Hagino. Konatsu Amano has just moved to a new town by the sea, and must deal with her new school’s mandatory club policy. Luckily, she meets Koyuki Honami, an older girl who runs the Aquarium Club. Recognizing her loneliness, Konatsu decides to join her club. (Published  in English by Viz Media)
Flowers: A four-part series of visual novels published by Innocent Grey. Flowers focuses on Saint Angraecum Academy, a private high school that prides itself on overseeing the growth of proper young ladies. One notable thing about the academy is the Amitié program, a system that pairs students together in order to foster friendships between the girls. But friendship isn’t the only thing blooming… (Available in English from Steam, J-List, and JAST USA)
Adachi And Shimamura: A series of light novels written by Hitoma Iruma and illustrated by Non that has recently received a manga adaptation and an anime adaption. Adachi and Shimamura are two girls who encounter each other one day while cutting class. Little by little, the two girls become a part of each other’s lives, and feelings begin to form. (The light novels are published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, the anime is licensed by Funimation)
And there we go! 24 different yuri titles. I didn’t even go into the series that I tried but personally didn’t like that still might interest other people. I primarily made this list to gush about yuri that I liked, but I also tried to include a fairly wide range of things so that, hopefully, any random person who read this whole list could find at least one new title that interests them. And I hope that includes you!
The yuri scene is quite large and wonderful if you know where to look, and it too often gets a bad rap. I hope that this list could give you a new perspective on what kinds of titles are available, and I hope it gives you something new to try. And remember: if you want something specific, try looking for it! There’s a good chance the story you’re craving is already out there, waiting to be discovered!

Similarities between Quintet games
The Quintet Trilogy
There are a few connections between Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma:
Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma deal with world regeneration and all three games deal with the concept of reincarnation.
Blazer and Will (in form of Shadow) have the technique of launching the spirit of the Firebird/Phoenix and apparently in Terranigma the weapons of the Hero, Ark, are shaped like a phoenix, too.
In both the Japanese and PAL versions the Soul Armor of Soul Blazer, appears in Terranigma.
In Illusion of Gaia, Will uses his powers to attract "Gems" like Blazer.
In Neotokio, the most advanced city in the world, Ark fights a ghost hidden in a garbage can, there by reviving the Quintet programmers, including a chicken, who are creating the game Illusion of Time 2 that is Terranigma. In the Japanese version the game, he is developing 天地 創造 (Tenchi Sōzō), they were literally making Terranigma. Also, in that version, you could answer a questionnaire (Quintet Quiz) if you were an expert in the games of the company, among them Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia.
Some characters and locations seem to appear in more than one game with different names:
All three games feature a dog named Turbo: in Soul Blazer, he appears in Greenwood; in Illusion of Gaia, he's at the Diamond Coast; in Terranigma, he's Meilin's dog.
In Illusion of Gaia, "The Moon tribe" people, are in the form of a Soul Blazer enemy: Ghost.
The enemies of Illusion of Gaia, Dinapedes and Nitropedes are similar to Metapedes of Dr. Leo's Lab in Soul Blazer.
Both Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma deal with Dark and Light Gaia.
In Illusion of Gaia the secret boss is Metal Mantis, who was the first boss of Soul Blazer.
Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma share a painter in their story.
The "Tulip" that appears in Illusion of Gaia in the of Edward's Castle Prison, is the same as those that appear in Soul Blazer.
Terranigma has Capetown in South Africa (though it can't be visited) and Illusion of Gaia begins in South Cape.
Mu exists in Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.
In Soul Blazer there is a place called St. Elle's Seabed, in Japanese "Palace of St. Ells" (セントエルズの宮殿), name like Elle (エル) of Terranigma.
Some characters are equivalent to the same ones from Soul Blazer:
Guardian of the Forest = Ra Tree
Queen Magridd = Bloody Mary
Magridd Castle = Sylvain Castle
Dr. Leo = Beruga (Dr. Leo says  "I am not passing away, rather, I am going to sleep. When a scientist with my knowledge is needed, I will be back.", and Beruga was alive in the ancient world, before it was revived by Ark).
Connection of the Quintet classic games between Quintet Trilogy
ActRaiser and ActRaiser 2: For being the beginning of the Quintet Trilogy and their complementary games (Robotrek and The Granstream Saga), there are different references in these:
In Soul Blazer, The Master (a non-playable character this time) is represented as a serious, kind, understandable, positive, and pious deity. He forgave King Magridd and never gave up hope that Blazer would triumph against Deatholl.
In ActRaiser 2 The Master has the power to turn into the spirit of the of Firebird/Phoenix for a few moments to attack the enemy.
In the Japanese version of the ActRaier 2, "Tower of Souls" is the "Tower of Babel" (バベルの塔戦]), which appears in Illusion of Gaia.
In Angel Village, appear enemies similar to Ramskulls which are from ActRaiser.
The outside of Angkor Wat temple of Illusion of Gaia is very similar to ActRaiser's Marahna temple.
In Terranigma, you can see two paintings: The Master of ActRaiser 2 painted by Matis and located in Mati's, which is in Loire, and the other in Britain in Sir Rich's mansion. Like some statues of one of three angels that help him in ActRaiser 2, specifically The Warrior Angel in Loire Castle.
ActRaiser and ActRaiser 2 are of the games that appears in the Quintet Quiz of Neotokio in Terranigma in the Japanese version.
In Terranigma the virus created by Beruga, "Asmodeus" is a reference of ActRaiser 2 the boss: Deception, in Japanese version: 欲望|Lust. Deception, apart from his attacks, sludge spit, fireball and bomb; he teleports to escape and uses his "Teleportation orb" to take The Master to another site on the same battlefield. Unlike "Asmodeus", that demon teleports the combatant, but doesn't erase him forever.
Although in interview of Koji Yokota by John Szczepaniak of his book The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers: Volume 1, he revealed that The Master is part of the games Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia. It's believed that he is also Light Gaia and Tanzra is Dark Gaia. This is believed because of the opening of Terranigma, (both in the original and the European version) which says, "They came to be called 'God' and 'Devil'."
The damaged sound effect of Blazer is the same of the ActRaiser when The Master is damaged.
The sound effect when defeating an enemy can be heard in ActRaiser, Soul Blazer, and Illusion of Gaia.
Sound effect of the enemies attacks bullet firing can heard in ActRaiser and Soul Blazer.
Robotrek: The game is a parody of the Quintet company's themes; such as is creation and destruction, human ambition, the use of science for good and evil, the theme of immortality that is implicit in Nagisa an assistant android with the resemblance to the deceased mother of the protagonist, problems between neighbors and among others. In addition to having some elements found in the ActRaiser and Quintet Trilogy, Robotrek would be the complement of those games:
The "Blade 4", in the Japanese version is called "Soul Blade" (ソウルブレイド), which could be the replica of the legendary weapon of the hero of Soul Blazer, with the technique of launching the spirit of Firebird/Phoenix.
The form of Tetron (bipyramid) resembles with the "Shrine of the Master" from Soul Blazer.
In the Clock Tower of Count Polinky's mansion where there is an enmity of some dolls with the mice of the place, this part of the game could be a reference to Soul Blazer in parody form.
In the Japanese version, the chicken on the farm is called "Catherine" (カトリーヌ), which is made a small mention in Terranigma, and are the only Quintet Super Nintendo Entertainment System games where chickens appear and the main character can talk to them.
On Robotrek "Rococo Town" (ロココ町) is a reference of the art style that originated in Paris in the late 17th and early 18th century. In Terranigma, Ark buys for 800 Gems: "Rococo Apartment" (ロココアパート).
In the computer of the main character (Hero's house) and that of his father, mentions ActRaiser 2 and Illusion of Gaia (in the Japanese and American version).
With the CyberJack, the player can enter the computer in dad's house and meet the Development staff of Quintet. This secret is present in Actraiser 2 and Terranigma, too.
The outside of Gateau's space fortress is shaped similar to that of the Tower of Babel.
In Rococo Town, The Master is mentioned in one diary where it narrates the preparation of a wedding: "We must thank the Deity" (神), doesn't seem to refer to the deity of South Isle. In addition to the fact that the main character of the game learned to create replicas of The Soul Blade.
Robotrek is one of the games that appears in the Quintet Quiz of Neotokio in Terranigma in the Japanese version.
The opening of Robotrek (Japanese version) the planet Quintenix "Paradise Star"(Gokuraku Hoshi) it's mentioned as small "star" (星):
"Infinite universe Among them, various forms of life were performed. There was a small star called Gokuraku-hoshi somewhere in the universe and there was a town called Rococo". "無限にひろがる大宇宙 その中では様々な生命のいとなみが行われていた その大宇宙のどこかに極楽星という小さな星がありロココ町という町があった…"
In Japanese opening of Terranigma, the planet Earth is also called "star": "The star had two hearts front and back faces Light Side and Dark Side The 4.6 billion years since the star was born... The two great wills are repeating evolution and decline." "その星は 二つの心を持っていた 表の顔 と 裏の顔 ライトサイド と ダークサイド この星が 生まれてからの 46億年という 年月は… 大いなる 二つの意志によって 進化と衰退をくり返している。"
In both the Japanese and American versions, a girl's dog and her grandmother's have the name Turbo (タ ー ボ), a name given to the Turbo that appear in Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma.
In one video "Brute Press" VHS Vol.24 July 1995 (【非売品】ブルートプレス Vol.24 1995年7月号) published Terranigma Beta version. The sound effects can heard is the same of the Robotrek.
The Granstream Saga: It's not certain if the story takes place on Earth or in another planet in a distant future. In American version the story of manual tells us:"One hundred years ago, on the planet of Granstream, a great war devastated the land"; while the Japanese mention "the world" (世界) and "land" (地表) or "above ground (地上): "Going back in time, 100 years ago. The war that divides the world broke out, and humankind was on the verge of extinction. Based on different magical powers as the basis of civilization, the two opposing forces "Magical Empire Army" and "Spirit Alliance Army" do not yield to each other, and finally the empire destroys the enemy's center with forbidden super magic weapons Executed the operation. It shattered the earth's veins and caused cataclysms. The earth's axis tilted greatly and the surface of the earth was completely submerged. And all life and civilization rooted on the earth have perished".
Although in an interview Koji Yokota, identifies Terranigma and The Granstream Saga different from ActRaiser, Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, these two games from different consoles, presented various themes related to the company's previous games, for these that suggest to be possible sequel of Terranigma. Due to the fact that the connection with the others isn't official, it could be considered as another complement to ActRaiser and Quintet Trilogy:
In the game Eon and Arcia make it a goal to raise the other continents to restore the world.
The level of Stalagmite Castle just like Dr. Leo's Painting of Soul Blazer.
A stone appears named: Star Stone.
Among Eon's weapons we find a sword called: "Arc Blazer" that increases damage to enemies that are weak against ice.And the axe of the Spirit King: "Gaia Edge."
The stained glass window of the church is very similar to the one that appears in Terranigma in Litz's church, but not the colours.
Outside of Airlim, the magic control Tower, it's similar to the form of Tower of Babel.
The background of Curio Shop, you can find a vase with two handle, just like Illusion of Gaia.
Appears the enemy "Mimic", like in Soul Blazer.
Eon use"Dried herb" and "Special herb" to heal like the herbs from Illusion of Gaia.
The original form of the Demon King Demaar (Digol) looks like the final form of Dark Gaia of Terranigma.
In The Granstream Saga, if Eon decides to sacrifice Arcia using her pure soul for defeat demon Demaar. In the end, The Master (Deity) appears, sitting on a throne in the Palace of the Heaven, talking to her.
The most powerful weapons of Blazer and their connection with the Quintet's classic games
In Soul Blazer, if you want to use the Phoenix, previously invoked, it's essential to equip the Soul Blade, the Soul Armor and have enough Gems in order to face Deathtoll. The games that followed represented the equipment menu of Blazer and the need have Gems:
Tumblr media
Weapon: Soul Blade (Robotrek: The replica of the Soul Blade).
Armor: Soul Armor (Terranigma: Soul Armor).
Magic: Phoenix (ActRaiser 2, Illusion of Gaia, and Robotrek).
Item: Super Bracelet (the Scepter of The Granstream Saga).

Hey everyone! Happy Ares Appreciation Day! I’ve finally finished that project I’ve been working on, so here it is!
Also Happy Birthday @bring-us-back-light . You can finally drink alcohol!
                                             The Fount
What we know:
The Fount is an area generally believed to be in the South of the Underland, next to the Waterway. It’s controlled by Howard’s family, mainly his mother Susannah and his father York. We can assume Howard and his siblings are generally in the same social class as Luxa, there doesn’t seem to be any official royalty in the Fount, but York is apparently the Chair Governor. Its proximity to the Waterway is definitely reflected in its inhabitants; Howard is trained in water aid and enjoys raw shellfish. The Fount is believed to be smaller than Regalia, but it has similar facilities (They have a hospital that is at least on par with Regalia’s). Other than that, there isn’t much description of the Fount within the books. Enjoy!
=====================================================
A note on timing:
Throughout this document, years have been referenced using the Underland system, but for the sake of readers unfamiliar with this timing standard a short explanation has been provided below:
BD refers to Before Descent, which is the entirety of time there have been no humans in the Underland.
AD refers to After Descent. However, there has been much debate concerning whether years should be counted from the first discovery of the Underland or at the end of the fifty years it took to transfer everyone into the new world. Most scholars, for the sake of consistency, start counting from the first time Bartholomew of Sandwich entered the Underland.
For reference, Gregor Campbell first fell in 377 AD.
History
Backstory:
After Bartholomew of Sandwich migrated to the Underland in 0 AD it took over 200 years for a separate colony to develop. By this time, fliers and humans had developed a strong relationship; whilst riding fliers had been a general method of transport since the original treaty, the concept of bonding was only just starting to emerge around this time. At this specific point, humans held mostly peaceful relationships with Underland species, most notable of which was the Treaty of Klier, which was signed in 116 AD after a particularly brutal war with the Gnawers. This treaty remains the longest kept in Underland history, eventually crumbling after the uprising of Prince Bloodspike (for more reading see “file::TreatyOfKlier/116” in the Regalian library.)
Beginning:
This peace gave humans reason to explore, map and colonize areas within the Underland they had never been before. King Opel especially wished to explore the South, beyond the Waterway. Realising it would be much too impractical to have fliers travel that distance multiple times, he ordered a village, the first of its kind, to be set up just over halfway between Regalia and the unexplored areas. Over a thousand soldiers, families and workers left their Regalian homes to start afresh in this new town. Planning for the future, Lirk of Reyton (who Opel decreed should oversee the building of the village) ordered the construction of various houses upon a cliff. He was famously quoted: “I imagine a beautiful city here. A city of vibrant colour, of joyous life. Of children playing, of friends laughing. I imagine a home.” However, the humans did not have nearly enough resources to create such a large project, and instead of being purposefully created as Regalia was, the Fount started as a just few houses cobbled together on a cliff.
Sustenance:
It was virtually impossible to continue feeding inhabitants with food imported from Regalia, so citizens began to look for their own sources of nutrition. The art of fishing had been lost due to the lack of safe water near Regalia, but over the next couple years people began to set up homes and docks near the shallows of the Waterway. Basic crop fields also sprouted up in the surrounding areas, and despite a small famine for the first few years, inhabitants soon had a steady stream of food. Various tributaries and rivers joined the Waterway nearby, so fresh water was never an issue.
War:
For the first 30 or so years, Regalia kept a tight hold on the Fount, making sure it never developed its own parliament or military. However, increasing action from both Gnawers and Cutters forced Regalia to focus on more pressing concerns. By the end of 268 AD the capital was recovering from a particularly bloody war, and the Fount had developed to have similar size and might as the capital. Fearing another attack, the Regalian council turned to the colony for help, begging them to combine their armies and defeat their common enemy. The Fount agreed, on the terms that whilst the two cities were to be united, they had separate authorities and governments. Accepting these conditions, the two great cities joined together and managed to destroy both the Gnawers and Cutters at the same time, winning a victory that was celebrated for years to come. Over time, the Fount softened and became more under Regalian control, but to this day they are regarded as separate territories and regions.
Peace:
Relative peace ensued between 270 to 320 AD. The Gnawers’ lack of numbers meant they posed no threat, and the Fount continued to develop, enlarging the area it had control over. Connections between the city-state and Regalia had never been stronger; the humans were free to create new technology and continue exploring the Underland. Aside from various attacks from rouge Gnawers, this peace was maintained until the Garden of Hesperides flooding (file::GardenofHesperides) . This, although actually caused by previous grievances, was to set the cornerstone for the war that continued up until Gregor Campbell’s arrival. The Fount assisted the humans, of course, but Regalia’s larger army and royalty meant the coastal city could largely avoid conflict. This, combined with the Fount’s obscure location far away from the Gnawer’s territories are reasons why it is generally believed to be safer than Regalia during times of war.
Ripred:
In what has now become somewhat of an urban legend, Ripred the Gnawer (for more information see “file::Gnawer/0001”) attempted to take over the Fount with an army of Clackers (more commonly known as Lobsters, the Overland term). He, along with several other Gnawers, tried to organise the Clackers into separate attack groups, but the species’ incoherence and confusion resulted in the eventual capture and gentle redistribution of Clackers along the coast. Ripred himself managed to non-lethally injure hundreds of guards before being imprisoned (and promptly escaping less than a day later)
Modern Fount
Physical Description:
Today’s Fount bears almost no similarity to the organized grids of Regalian architecture; having started as a small village and spread out from there, the city is essentially a sprawling mess. It spreads all over the mountain it was originally built upon, some houses are over 400m above the Waterway’s sea level, despite being almost right next to it. The city is almost in reverse; instead of having the palace at the centre, the smallest and oldest homes take pride of place. However, there is something comforting about the way locals can navigate the small alleys and misshapen buildings with ease. The buildings themselves serve as homes, workplaces and leisure areas for inhabitants, and all look cobbled together, somehow teetering on the edge of collapsing but also looking incredibly sturdy at the same time. Due to the Fount’s relative proximity to not only the Jungle but also the flower fields of Kjar, the majority of the Underland’s dyes and paints are mixed and made in the city (various materials from the Waterway’s seabed are also used). This has lead to most of the buildings being painted in an extraordinary array of colours, and first-time visitors - who are usually used to the monochrome palette of Regalia - are often astounded by how beautiful the city is, especially at dawn/dusk.The palace was designed in a very different way to Regalia’s; the eldest city’s royal home is much more blocky and sturdy, whilst the Fount’s palace is slanted, abstract and colourful, giving it a much more vibrant look. The Fount gets its name from the monument outside the palace, the natural geyser, around which was built a beautiful community park (possible, of course, because of the bioluminescent creatures that give off enough light for plants to grow and the fresh water that keeps the soil hydrated). Many ceremonies are held there throughout the year, and it is not uncommon to see weddings or parties taking place. Not to mention, of course, the annual explosion of fresh water due to the build up in the natural pipes (see file::theFount/Geyser), which thousands come to see every year.
Political Structure:
The Fount is ruled over by a single governor, influenced by the Regalian council but also able and encouraged to make their own decisions. Unlike the heredity system used within Regalia, the governor is chosen democratically, with a new election every four years. This governor leads the small council known as The Oligarchy who discuss and impose laws concerning military defence, economic structure and social justice. Whilst both cities follow the Seven Commandments written down by Bartholomew of Sandwich in 2AD, laws passed in each settlement do not apply to each other. The Fount’s justice system is a complicated subject and will not be covered in this document. Governors can be elected no more than twice in a row, and must wait for the amount of time they spent in office before standing for election again. As mentioned previously, the Fount has had a rocky history with Regalia, but as of 379 AD it is almost exclusively under Regalian control, mainly due to the marriage of Susannah Vetring (aunt of Luxa Hawthi, current heir to the Regalian throne ) to York Griye, whose family has ruled the Fount for years. Readers should note that the royal family of the Fount is different to the governor. Susannah is the current leader whilst York is the governor. They have five children, but due to Howard Griye’s pursuit of medicine he has been pardoned of heirship, so Stellovet Griye will rule the Fount after her parents, followed by the rest of her siblings. The Fount abides by the same rules and laws of Regalia, and the two cities share the same social, legal and economic systems. However, a notable difference between the colonies is their justice system; Regalia takes much harsher action on criminals when compared with the Fount’s view on punishments.
Economy:
The Fount has a similar economy to Regalia; although the cities do not have a ‘currency’ as an Overlander would see it, inhabitants obtain necessities by trading goods and services with each other. On a much larger scale, the government also supervises a huge trading system with Underland species, such as trading dyes for silk from the spinners, fish for the safe return of any Overlander’s found by the crawlers and bread for shedded Stinger scales, as they are incredibly tough and are used in armour production. The Fount’s inter-species trading is much larger than Regalia, as the capital is more concerned with military defense.
Daily Life:
There is a variety of jobs Fount inhabitants work as, ranging from fishermen to palace guards, Waterway explorer to simple farmer. Most people are employed in some sense, and the few who aren’t receive benefits from the government. People generally work for 7 hours a day, and the rest of the time is devoted to leisure. Residents have access to a wide variety of recreational activities and centres, swimming being most popular. Almost everyone is able to swim to some extent, and water aid training is mandatory for children. Education is also mandatory for children below sixteen, although there are many further education opportunities after that.
Final Notes:
This document is only an outline of the Fount, various documents in the Regalian library will provide more specific and detailed information about the events and places discussed within this document. For further reading see:

Popuko and Pipimi: “Are You Upset?”
King Records Executives: “We are not upset.”
-          Pop Team Epic (Ep. 12)
This week’s Toonami Trending Rundown is a double-feature for the nights of September 15-16, 2018 and September 22-23, 2018, as we saw the Thrilling conclusion of Pop Team Epic, while Black Clover also concludes the Eye of the Midnight Sun Arc, and Universe 7 battles Universe 9 in the Zeno Exhibitions, among other great moments.
During the night of September 15-16, Toonami, BHNA and JoJo’s would trend on tumblr, while no trends were spotted on Twitter save for some tweet counts. During the night of September 22-23, things were a little better, as Toonami trended in the US on Twitter, while Toonami, #BNHA, Attack on Titan, and Hunter x Hunter trended on tumblr.
Tumblr media
This week’s feature was a new trailer for the upcoming English debut of the next installment of the Naruto franchise in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. You can check it out below.
youtube
Last week, Aniplex showcased a special premiere event for the highly anticipated Project Alicization story arc of Sword Art Online, and for a first for me and ToonamiFaithful.com, I headed up to Los Angeles to cover the event for the Toonami Faithful. I also got the opportunity to talk with Bryce Papenbrook regarding voicing Kirito and the show's success among other things. We’ll have those articles posted as soon as they’re finished but you can check out this moments tab archiving some of the moments from the event as well as the official trailer from Aniplex posted below in the meantime.

Ever since the anime aired in Japan earlier in the year, Pop Team Epic has become a big fan favorite among those who saw the series across the various streaming sites it has been available on as well as being a popular source for anime related memes. Many fans have likened it to one of Adult Swim’s classic animated comedies, and indeed there have been quite a few requests for Adult Swim to pick this one up. Adult Swim eventually did, however the big stunner would be that it would air on Toonami Saturdays, rather than on Sundays as many expected and Pop Team Epic would successfully make its debut on the night of June 30, 2018.
Indeed in recent times, many fans have wanted Toonami to showcase non action programs for variety’s sake, especially with many of Toonami’s acquisitions in recent times being Shonen Jump works. While some might say otherwise, Jason DeMarco has said that he has heard such concerns, and has mentioned that the Toonami crew are looking into creating and acquiring more anime and action cartoons of all kinds to expand Toonami’s scope.
While Pop Team Epic’s acquisition has received plenty of applause, it has also received plenty of scorn as well, mainly due to the reason being it’s style of comedy may be more enjoyed sandwiched next to the likes of Rick and Morty and Robot Chicken, rather than FLCL and JoJo’s. And to say the least, its style of comedy may not necessarily be for everyone. Regardless, Pop Team Epic has been seen as a success in regards to what it needed to do, and this could signal the start of one of potentially many potential experimental shows to come.
12 weeks of Popuko and Pipimi doing…we’ll…stuff…and Pop Team Epic’s run is in the books. During the show’s run, the show successfully trended on Twitter during 11 out of 12 weeks of its run, including in the US during weeks 1 and 5. The show also trended on tumblr during its first week.
Tumblr media
We’ve heard rumblings of a potential second season, but all such talk is just rumors so far. However, if a second season did come to fruition, I won’t be opposed. Regardless, whether it was a failed experiment, or a sign of things to come, Pop Team Epic was quite an interesting experience to say the least. So on behalf of the Toonami Faithful, thanks for the memories, Popuko and Pipimi, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Tumblr media
Tune in next week as Toonami expands to 9pm EDT as Boruto joins the block at 10:30pm Eastern, while Black Clover begins the Seabed Temple Arc at 1am, among other great moments. And just to remind you, the new schedule will include some significant schedule changes, so make sure to get familiar with the new schedule and set your DVRs if need be.
Not much else to say other than until next week, stay gold as always.

This crumbling museum in a bleak town by a dried-out sea has one of the world’s greatest collections of avant-garde art, rescued from Stalin’s clutches. But without urgently needed help, it will die
I am sitting at a huge table at the Ministry of Culture in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, as officials explain what sounds like a wonderful opportunity. There’s currently an international call-out to find someone to run a gallery in the country, one housing the world’s second-largest collection of Russian avant garde art. What an amazing job, I think – raising the profile of a museum that could turn out to be the Louvre of central Asia.
But the dream job may not be quite so dreamy. The next day, at a godawful hour, I get up to fly to Nukus in northern Uzbekistan, where this “museum of forbidden art” is located. En route, I blearily note that even the guidebooks can find little to say about this “unappealing city”. It seems the only other reason people venture there is for a spot of “disaster tourism”. The Aral Sea, once the fourth largest inland sea, has shrunk because of Soviet irrigation systems and chemicals pumped into the water. All the fish are dead. There’s a horribly photogenic landscape of rusting boats on a dried-up seabed that looks like a lunar surface. Toxic dust blows through the area – there are high rates of infant mortality and cancer.
