Seaweed is versatile; it provides habitat for marine life, shelters coastlines, and absorbs carbon dioxide. But in the United States, scientists are setting out to see whether seaweed has another particularly valuable trick hidden up its proverbial sleeve: to act as a salty, slimy source of precious minerals.

Within the US Department of Energy is the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), a scientific branch devoted to tackling challenging, high-risk projects on energy technologies. ARPA-E takes big swings and looks for big rewards. And so far, the agency has awarded US $5-million to three ventures investigating whether seaweed can serve as a practical source of critical materials, such as platinum and rhodium, as well as rare earth elements, including neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium, and dysprosium.

These valuable elements, which can be captured and concentrated by seaweed, are essential to the green energy transition—and to technology more broadly. Seaweed could represent an alternative to conventional mining and other prospects, such as deep-sea mining.

“There are a lot of complexities in the entire process, and that’s why it’s in the category of ‘very exploratory,’” says Schery Umanzor, a seaweed expert at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a lead researcher on one of the projects funded by ARPA-E. “The chances of success are low. But if we succeed, then the implications are huge.”

Two key principles underlie this research, Umanzor says. For one, seaweed grows quickly and sucks minerals out of the water to do so. For two, seaweed’s cell walls are structured from sulfated polysaccharides—compounds made of long chains of sugar molecules. Sulfated polysaccharides are negatively charged, meaning they attract positively charged minerals floating nearby. “It’s pure chemistry,” Umanzor says. “Positive with negative, and then it just collects.”

Der Spätsommer war lau, und die Türe zum Klassenzimmer stand offen.“ So beginnt „Der Schüler Gerber hat absolviert“, wie der Originaltitel des 1930 erstmals veröffentlichten Romans lautete. Längst ist das Buch zu einem Klassiker der deutschen Literaturgeschichte geworden, längst hat sich Friedrich Torberg eingereiht in den Dichter-Olymp Österreichs. Und „Der Schüler Gerber“ ist ein Buch, das schwerlich vergessen wird, nachdem es einmal gelesen wurde.

Eine Erinnerung an den Inhalt: Kurt Gerbers (genannt „Scheri“) Kampf um die Matura und gegen den Mathematiklehrer „Gott Kupfer“. Das letzte Schuljahr ist für die Oktava angebrochen, der fast klischeehaft böse Lehrer Kupfer zum neuen Klassenvorstand geworden. Einer, der seine Macht genießt, der sich wirklich als Gott empfindet, wenn er seine Schüler vernichtet. Ein boshafter Mensch, „abgrundtief schlecht“, wie es im Roman heißt. Kurt Gerber wird kämpfen und verlieren, seine Niederlage wird durch zusätzliche Umstände forciert: Seine Jugendliebe Lisa wird er nicht erringen, sein Vater erkrankt schwer. Das Ende ist Selbstmord, obwohl er – der Leser erfährt es in der letzten Zeile des Romans – „von der Prüfungskommission für reif erklärt worden war“.

Der Roman fasziniert durch großartige Schlüsselszenen. Unaufhaltsam wird man hineingezogen in diese düstere Version der „Feuerzangenbowle“, die Streiche und Scherze verlangen hier Blutzoll. Unvergesslich etwa die erste Mathematikprüfung in der Gerber, den rettenden Spickzettel schon in der Hand, von Gott Kupfer erwischt wird. Ausnahmslos jeder Leser erschauert bei diesen Beschreibungen, fühlt sich selbst ertappt und in seine Schulzeit zurückgeworfen. Oder die zarten Bilder zwischen Kurt und Lisa, das Skifahren im Gebirge etwa oder die nächtliche Zugfahrt im Dunkeln.

Eine Erinnerung an die großartige Klarheit und Eindringlichkeit von Torbergs Sprache: Glasklar und doch intensiv führt uns der Autor durch die Strapazen einer Jugend. Der Erzähler ist ein allwissendes Wesen, das mühelos in die unterschiedlichsten Personen schlüpft. Und gerade in der Darstellung des jeweiligen Gedankenstroms brilliert Torberg: Wie etwa am Ende des Romans der Schüler Gerber zunehmend in Verwirrung, Verzweiflung und Panik verfällt, ist bis heute auf selten erreichte Weise dargestellt. „Das ist ein lebendiges Buch“, urteilte Kurt Tucholsky begeistert.

Friedrich Torberg, 1908 in Wien geboren, starb 1979 ebendort. „Der Schüler Gerber“, sein erstes und zugleich erfolgreichstes Buch schrieb er als 21-Jähriger, als er gerade selbst, nach einer Wiederholung, maturierte. Autobiografisch ist diese Abrechnung mit schulischen Machtstrukturen, aber auch angeregt von Zeitungsberichten über Schülerselbstmorde. Viele Bücher folgten Torbergs Erstling, der von seinem Mentor Max Brod an den Wiener Zsolnay-Verlag vermittelt wurde. 1975 etwa die anekdotisch geprägte „Tante Jolesch“, ein Longseller. Dazwischen lagen Verfolgung durch die Nazis, Emigration über die Schweiz und Frankreich in die USA, 1951 schließlich die Rückkehr in sein geliebtes Wien. In der Nachkriegszeit gründete Torberg die einflussreiche Kulturzeitschrift „FORVM“, übersetzte Ephraim Kishon und setzte den – politisch motivierten – Brecht-Boykott an den Wiener Theatern durch. Als „Jud vom Dienst“, wie er sich selbst belächelte, bespielte er die Kulturbühne, wurde eingeladen zu Rundfunk und Fernsehen und war im Gesellschaftsleben der Stadt schon damals ein intellektueller „Star“ – auf den man hörte. quelle

I was actually looking to find more music/information about the '70s hard rock band Birtha, but in my search on archive.org I came across this band who I'd heard of before and must've listened to at least one of their songs years ago, but who I'd forgotten about. Lucky for me, actually, because that meant I got to lose my mind all over again over the fucking AMAZING FLUTE played in a HARD ROCK BAND! Not to mention the fact that the flutist is also the lead vocalist, AND according to the information on this single, "Icarus," on discogs, Chris Scheri also played guitar on the original recording (along with Cris Bonacci who I know of from her time with Girlschool). Oh, and Chris Scheri (lead vocalist, flutist, guitarist) also wrote this song (so, also songwriter). You can listen to a much better quality recording of the song here.
