April 1, 2023 - Emerald Swift (Sceloporus malachiticus)
These swifts are found in parts of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. They feed on insects, foraging in the early morning. Unlike many species in the same family, they are ovoviviparous, meaning their eggs hatch while inside the female and she gives birth to live young.

Desert Spiny Lizard - May 2023
There are lizards all over the place here at Catalina State Park. They scurry across the paths as you approach and dive into the grass when you get too close. The little ones are extremely fast. Bigger ones, like this Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister) which I saw on the Oro Valley Bike Trail, move a little slower. They are still usually out of sight by the time I can get a good image, but this particular one let met get close enough to zoom in for a pretty good image.

One endemic creature I'm always happy to see when I visit central Florida is the lovely Florida Scrub Lizard (Sceloporus woodi). That blue deserves to be on the state flag

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Lyme disease is a serious issue in North America, but there is an unsung hero keeping this illness at bay: the Western Fence Lizard. A protein in their blood eliminates the bacteria that enters their bodies, and by extension clears the tick of all disease!

Found on a suitcase in my storage locker this morning. Like me, I guess he’s got an urge to travel.
Clark’s spiny lizard (Sceloporus clarkii) in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Once the weather warms up he’ll relocate to the trees, and start showing some turquoise and sapphire colors for mating season. You can see examples of their colorful scales here.
