TW: sexual violence
Finished Now and Then, Here and There and my head is buzzing. I think the most upsetting thing was the pro-life bent to Sara’s storyline. Still scratching my head about that because. Genuinely what the fuck ???
Sara, like other girls/women Hamdo captures, is subjected to forced rape by the soldiers for breeding. This is horrifying, and the writing thankfully treats it like the horror that it is, and is never gratuitous. It’s not needlessly there, it’s there to reflect the real world genocides and brutality the series was based on, and fits in with the grim realism the series depicts of war.
Sara kills her would be attacker, escapes from prison hood on her own, and starts a life in Zari-Bars (I can’t rmbr the name of this place sorry😭) All of this would be fair I think, but things get off the rails very fast. In Zari-Bars she’s revealed to be pregnant, which is absolutely horrifying. Sara, a child, seriously struggles with the trauma of being kidnapped, raped, and now pregnant. All of this is VERY serious and distressing subject matter, and the anime really drops the ball in handling it.
The anime shows her in desolation over her trauma, but has a big emotional lesson where she tries to crush her abdomen with a rock and Shu repeatedly puts his hand there to save the baby, after slapping her for saying she wishes she and the baby were dead? The scene paints Sara in the wrong for wanting her baby to die. Then when Sis, the maternal figure who took her in, is on her death bed, her dying words to Sara are not to hate the baby. There’s such a pro-life bent to this storyline, prioritizing the babys life over Sara’s trauma and body autonomy? If she WASNT a child and got pregnant through consensual sex, it would still be weird as fuck for everyone to be going on about saving the baby!!! now factor that in with it was through rape, and she’s also a child!!! What the fuck were the writers thinking?
What makes this all EVEN weirder?? The doctor OFFERS an abortion in the very scene he reveals she’s pregnant. It’s not like she has no access to any safe or healthy abortion methods, and so aborting the child would be a threat to her life. It’s presented to us as existing in this world. Which makes the pro-life stuff, even fucking worse/weirder/more misogynistic.
Ultimately the Sara pro-life bent is the biggest stain on Now and Then, Here and There, and is what I think prevents it from being elevated to top echelon of anime. It’s very disappointing because of the incredibly serious and delicate subject matter, and the severity of the content and themes presented. Everything else in the series about war and violence is done very well, making this even more awful. I also read the anime’s director sexual harassed Sara’s voice actor, who I’m so sorry for, so sexist awful men making sexist awful writing choices. Shame because of how much else the series has to offer. Sara deserved so much better.

Actually the real reason I've strayed away from talking about Now and Then Here and There is that I am Sara Ringwalts most ardent defender and I will have to fight off her mob of haters. She is literally me. She's one of the most hated characters I've seen in anime. She has never done anything wrong

After watching the anime series Now and Then Here and There(今、そこにいろ僕), I’ve been curious as to why Sara decided to keep her child despite the circumstances she had been through and how the child was conceived.
Tumblr media
(WARNING: Post may be triggering as it deals with the issue of rape, as Sara had gone through)
So Sara was abducted by Hellywood soldiers mistaken her for Lala Ru. And she was subjected to a horrible circumstances as she was repeatedly violated by the soldiers of Hellywood to produce offsprings to be used as future soldiers. She finally escaped from captivity and was found by Sis, who took her back to the village of Zari Bars. She ended up being pregnant as a result of her traumatic experience, and tried to abort her unborn baby by slamming a rock into her abdomen, only for Shu to stop her, telling to her keep on living.
Tumblr media
Towards the end of the series, Sis’s dying request for Sara to not resent her own child for her misfortune might had more or less convinced her to stay behind to keep it, as well as to take care of the orphans in her stead.
Tumblr media
As far as I’m concerned, most rape victims wouldn’t even consider keeping their children due to how they’re conceived, let alone letting another man anywhere near her.
While looking on the forums on Myanimelist, the users on there had accused the series of having some pro life agenda behind it, like they were against the idea of Sara keeping her unborn baby, and how rape victims shouldn’t be forced to keep them because of how they would only remind them of their pain.
So why did she chose to keep her child, other than Sis and Shu asking her to not abort it? Did she made the right decision? And I’m fairly certain she wouldn’t let another guy near her again after what she went through.

Sara Ringwalt from Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (Now and Then, Here and There)
It’s Inktober again and I’ve got some pens and markers here. I’d thought I’d go through anime from the 90s. First up: “Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku”, or “Now and Then, Here and There”, is about an optimistic boy named Shu, who is transported far into the future and finds himself in a war torn and deserted wasteland. He is kidnapped, tortured and eventually recruited into an army of child soldiers and has to find a way to survive in a terribly cruel environment. Sara Ringwalt is an American girl, who like Shu, was taken from her time to this world. It’s masterfully done, but always left me emotionally drained after each episode. Every time the credits rolled I had to stare and just contemplate what I’d just watched.

Because ten billion years time is so fragile, so ephemeral...
Oftentimes when I need to decompress or if I have a day off from work, I usually watch TV, movies, anime, or what have you.
More often than not, I will forget about what I saw as soon as the credits roll. It takes something really special for things I see to stay with me for a long time.
One year ago, on Saturday, September 23, 2017, I saw Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (better known by its English title: Now and Then, Here and There) and I was just awestruck by it.
While it's no easy watch, it has left a mark with me and I'm glad I saw it.
I won't give away too much, but basically it's about a naive young boy who is transported to a strange new world where war is rife and water is scarce. That may not sound all that impressive, but it shines a spotlight on things that most of us in the first world have had a luxury to turn a blind eye to.
If you can handle the tough subject matter, I would implore you to set aside a day and watch it. (WARNING: no matter who you are, you'll probably find yourself staring at the ceiling for A good solid hour afterward.)
(Geez, I hope this doesn't sound like posterior kissing.)

4/6 Now and Then, Here and There
Tumblr media
I think there a few interesting things going on in Here and There, Now and Then. First off, there is something simple and pleasing by seeing all these scenes in front of beautiful sunsets. I’m sure this has some deeper meaning like the end of something that will lead to the beginning of something new, but I’m just not completely sure. Especially this scene where Shu and Lala Ru are sitting on the abandoned site smoke stacks. Not much is said other than Shu blabbing his mouth asking questions, but I think something important is said even without words.
I also think there is a clear parallel between the general of Hellywood, Hamdo, and the World War II times in Japan. I may be going out on a limb, but I think that it is comparable to the Japanese government during the war and their overall corruption, and their lack concern for people. I don’t know if i could easily compare Japan to the insane lunatic, Hamdo, especially since he killed and kicked the dead cat. I think characters like Nabuca and Boo and the others were like the military which blindly followed what the higher ups told them to do. I also think that it is interesting that there is an American named Sara Ringwalt in the mix. I feel bad that she is raped regularly by the Hellywood soldiers. I think it is funny how Hamdo’s base location is called Hellywood, like Hollywood. Don't know what that ties to.

Unlucky Anime Characters
Anime has many difficult past origin stories and events that are unlucky to characters. Luck is a word meaning to have good fortune or good things to happen in one's life. Even, St. Patrick's Day would save these people from the misfortune of the world in the slightest. Reika Ko is a pilot of Apollo in Genesis of Aquarion. She might be an important pilot however, others avoid contact with her for how unlucky she is. The constant reminder of her boyfriend's coma, who she thinks herself is the cause of, by fellow pilots traps Reika in a mental prison of self-doubt causing more misfortune. Tsunade might be one of the Legendary Three Ninja in the Hidden Leaf Village of Naruto, but gambling is not her cup of tea. Other than, the Legendary Three Ninja, she is also known as "The Legendary Sucker" for no luck in gambling. When it comes down to it, she knows when the bets are off and releases her "Strength of a Hundred Seal" Jutsu like the Great Ninja War. Anne Happy is an anime full of bad luck with many characters having it. These female protagonists have specific cases like Ruri's lack of luck in love, Botan with very poor health conditions, and An's terrible luck all around. The bad luck of everyone is a common interest and forms a bond over that subject. Yamcha had appearances in three tournaments in which he lost two due to future champions and one whose disguise was really clever. Yamcha's luck in Dragon Ball Z was truly tested in Vegeta's attack on Earth where he was the first person to fall victim to the notorious crater. Unfortunately, he earned the status of Yamcha's Death Pose and tag of "you were Yamcha" meaning recklessness as an insult. Sara Ringwalt starts the series by being a mistake for LaLa-Ru and is imprisoned as a sex slave. Life is not easy for Sara because so much was taken from her in a blink of an eye. The entire mistaken identity causes Sara to blame LaLa-Ru for her misery and says "Keep her away from me or else I might kill her." If you are fortunate, then good for you but remember, everyone has different circumstances.

Seriously, i know I picked it randomly, but I don’t think I can take another trip with Sara.

Sara Ringwalt from “Now and Then, Here and There” (Ima Soko ni Iru Boku)
Just finished watching “Now and Then, Here and There”. It’s brilliantly made, but I needed multiple breaks to process everything. It would be hard to watch it all in one sitting. The themes of child soldiers, violence and war hit hard in each episode.
Out of all the characters, Sara Ringwalt was the one that stood out for me. No one deserves what she went through. I thought that her moonlit escape was both beautiful and sad so, I had to draw something from that scene.
