A Sanabria Story
A Sanabria origins story
My mother's father was the only grandfather I actually knew. Gustavo Sanabria was an amazing man and a great father figure for me. He loved his family and he was able to teach many wonderful life lessons to his grandchildren as, I'm sure, he was able to do for his own children.
I remember that my Grandfather passed away a year before my daughter was born. So for me that was towards the end of 1998. I was able to get some stories from my mother about the life that he lived, at least the little she knew or heard of. The narrative from her is only partial although with amazing detail (at times forcing me to ask her if she was actually there, and if she wasn't I would follow that up with a question on what her sources were, this question was usually dimissed as it distracted from the story, which was obviously more important than the truth). The narative of course is subjective, incomplete, and certainly inaccurate in places, and yet, as I discovered from my grandfather, it is sacred.
I am not sure what year he was born, but by my calculations, he was born in the mid 1920’s (assuming he passed away in his mid 70’s). I knew my great grandmother, Gustavo’s mother, we knew her as “la mama Eduvina” I went to her funeral when I was in college, around 1992 or 93. I never knew his father, whose name is Domingo. From what I heard, Domingo Sanabria died when my grandfather was fairly young. Evidently, he had many siblings, and this was unclear to us. Many of us became aware of many relations that were part of his clan, but it was never clear who they were. The only ones I knew for sure were Tia Lucila and Abigail, who were his youngest sisters, and Tio Benjamin, his brother. The picture below is one of the oldest we have of the family. It is thought that the man standing on the right may be my grandfather (or the man in the white shirt next to him).

As you may have picked up from the Celeita Clan post, my mother was not in contact with her own father because her mother had separated her at birth, and she was initially raised by her maternal grandparents. My mother then does not have much credible stories of Gustavo's early life. My only guess is she may have heard of some stories from others, and this she kept (and possibly edited). One such story is that my grandfather was a good businessman, and after the passing of his father, it became his responsibility to develop the family financially. His father had left him with an estate, farm, and a chain of restaurants. But, Great Grandma Eduvina messed this up a bit. She became engaged to a second husband (who at the time was dating her eldest step-daughter, Maria Esther). Supposedly, the man was charismatic but conniving. He was also considered a drinker and a gambler. He had convinced her to place his name on the property deeds that she had inherited from her first husband. He then went on to divorce and displace the family through legal trickery.
This is my mother's story, and it is corroborated by my uncle Domingo (the eldest son of my grandfather). It will be good to see how other family members will corroborate or edit this rather colorful story. In either case, the story places Gustavo in the difficult responsibility to find ways of developing the family resources. Evidently, what we do know is that he had an entrepreneurial spirit. It seems that he would manage obtaining a truck and began his career trucking goods from one place to another. He then entered into (or inherited) the restaurant business owning a chain of restaurants that were called "las Amazonas" and "La Mazorca." He would also enter into financial investments, and one that would employ my mother for a time was with a petrol company known as Eco-Petrol. Gustavo was an accomplished businessman. I recall that he tended to dress formally, and he was great at networking with others.
As for his personal life, what we gather is that he had relations at least twice before he formally married a woman by the name of Evangelina. Before that union, he had two daughters, Carmella and Bertha, my mother. Once he married Evangelina, he had four boys, Domingo, Vicente, Gustavo, and Wilson, and three girls Maria Eugenia, Estella, and Jacqueline.
As I mentioned in the Celeita story sometime around the age of 16 my mother became aware of her father's existence through her uncle Ramon. Knowing that she could not count on her mother she involved (blackmailed) Ramon to inform Gustavo that his daughter lived. Ramon became the go-between in an elaborative plot to reunite them. This involved calculating a time where her mother had to be away for most of the day. She then had a small bag of items stored and ready to go. Ramon informed her that her father would be at a specific bus stop reading a specific newspaper (they had not seen each other yet) in the outskirts of Bogota. She had to journey to this location. Evidently her mother did come back earlier then expected and forced a confession from Ramon. She then went out to get her before it was too late. But alas, the contact was made. My grandfather Gustavo rushed her in the bus and they left before Cecilia got to her. Once all the papers were signed to give him the guardianship over my mother he contacted Cecilia to visit with them at a cafe, if she meet and confessed her guilt in from of my mother they would not prosecute her for her crimes against him. This she did, and that would be the last time Cecilia would see her until right before she passed away.
As for my mother she was welcomed with Gustavo's home and, as she had not been given an education by her mother, she was eventually dormed in a private school for a couple of years to catch up. My mother portrays herself as a responsible sibling who was not only seen as the oldest sister but as the second authority in the house next to Evangelina. She has many stories of having taken care of her siblings and assisting the housekeeper Judy. My mother then went to work for Eco-Petrol and dated a singer named Enrique Salamanca. She was given another opportunity to be a secretary for one of the execs, but my grandfather did not allow her to pursue that. He also advised her on not marrying the singer because he did not approve that lifestyle for her. She is now very thankful for her father's protective stance towards her, but it is curious that after those decisions were made, she began plotting her sojourn to the United States.
By this time, in the mid-1960s, Tia Lucila and Great Grandma Eduvina were already in the US. My mother plotted with them to get the visa she needed to work in the states. She kept this from her father. Around Christmas time, maybe in 1967, Lucila and Eduvina came from the United States. They brought her the paperwork she needed to enter the country. The day her aunt and grandmother were ready to leave, she went with her father to take them with a small bag that she hid from him. It was then she told him that she was going g to join them, it seems like he thought she was joking and let her pretend to go until she pulled out the documents and money that allowed her to board the plane. He was surprised but she convinced him it was just a temporary tourist visa so he let her go. It was actually a worker visa, and she would eventually become a permanent resident.
Eventually, my mother would assist in bringing her father and her step-siblings from his side to the US. I had the pleasure of getting to know my grandfather when he lived in New Rochelle. He carried himself off as a businessman, but I also saw how he very much cared for his family's well-being. He was the patriarch of the family who connected us all together.
The last time I went to Colombia in 1996 and I stayed with him during that time. He shared with me much of his wisdom and felt the need to help me develop a professional look by having some tailored made suits. He loved to tell stories. He was fond of giving little gifts, especially jewelry to his grandchildren, and each gift had a story behind it. As I got older, I tried to have him get to the point (my failed attempt to Americanize him). He did not get upset, but he looked at me as if I suggested something very foolish. He would not compromise the story. For him, the narrative contained a deeply spiritual context that gave meaning to all people and items. At the time, I found that to be a very subjective approach. How does one get to the truth if narratives can differ. But as I became older and began to appreciate the postmodern approach with its emphasis on contextual narratives, I began to appreciate the Latinx wisdom that my grandfather taught me. Context is sacred, this is a truth recognized by the various contextual theological disciplines including Liberation Theology and Latinx Theology. As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, this sacred narrative is only a partial glimpse into the family I was born into. It is a partial narrative and hopefully it will fit into a larger tapestry as others weave their own sacred story to mine.
