Early in the crisis, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen appealed directly to Danes’ samfundssind. “We have to stand together by keeping our distance,” she said at a press conference on 11 March as the country locked down, one of the first in Europe to do so. “We need community spirit. We need help. I would like to thank… all who have so far shown that this is exactly what we have in Denmark – samfundssind.” Danes responded enthusiastically. Private companies helped ease pressure on healthcare services by procuring medical equipment through the Denmark Helping Denmark campaign – the response to which showed “incredible goodwill and community spirit,” according to the Danish Medicines Agency's Director General Thomas Senderovitz. Several of Denmark most-loved attractions also stepped up: the Lego factory began manufacturing visors for healthcare workers; amusement park Tivoli Gardens turned into a temporary kindergarten, with social distancing guidelines in place; and double Michelin-starred Alchemist pivoted from serving exclusive 50-course tasting menus to cooking pasta for 12 homeless shelters around Copenhagen.

Community spirit

I saw a story on the news the other day about how the Danish word "samfundssind", which translates to something along the lines of community spirit, is a thing the international press talks about a lot these days.

Samfundssind is when you keep the welfare of your community in mind and put your own needs aside (temporarily or not) in order to help your community in some way. It's a word that was first made popular in the 1930s.

Samfundssind is a VERY used word now that we struggle with covid-19. You go into self-isolation if you have even the slightest suspicion that you have covid-19 -also if you ain't really showing much symptoms. Even if you'd rather party with your friends or go to work/school. You do this because of the samfundssind. You put your own needs and wants aside in order to protect the people in your community safe JUST IN CASE you really have covid-19.

You wear your goddamn face mask in public because of samfundssind. Not because it's fun or convenient to you but because it reduces the risk of vulnerable human beings in your community getting covid-19. Just because it's made (temporarily) law doesn't make it something the government does to annoy you or to decrease your freedom in any way. It's law, yes, but you do it out of samfundssind. You can complain about how awful it is to wear a face mask because you are now confronted with your own bad breath and all that. But out of samfundssind you don't get to not wear it when you're close to other ppl in public. You wear your mask and you keep your distance to ppl you don't know because of samfundssind.

Last Friday the Danish government decided on new restrictions regarding facemasks starting from Thursday. So now we have to wear facemasks when we go grocery shopping (among a few other things), as well as when in public transportations and while not seated in restaurants and cafes. And many people started wearing maskes while grocery shopping within 24 hours of that announcement. They started it on Saturday even when they could wait until Thursday. But it's what you do when you keep the samfundssind in mind. It's extremely inconvenient and all that, but we will still do it. We want to protect the vulnerable people in our community. We want to protect our health care system. We want to keep our community as open as possible without ppl dying from it and we do that by wearing face masks.

I hope that ppl all around the world will do their best to reduce the risks of vulnerable humans getting covid-19 by remembering the samfundssind. And please stop accusing politicians of trying to take your freedom away by telling you to wear a mask. They are trying to save your country and they need your help to do so by telling you to wear a mask. They are not telling you to give blood. They are not telling you to chop off your arm. They are not taking away your god/gods. They are trying to save your country and community.

Today the new restrictions started in Denmark where you have to wear a facemask when you go grocery shopping.

I still find it inconvenient to wear a mask but I do it out of samfundssind. And I will keep doing it because of samfundssind.

And today I thought... it could actually be a really good thing for me, my wallet AND my dream of weight loss! Because now I can't just go shopping whenever my cravings or whatever tells me to. Now I need to actually PLAN when I go shopping because I have to wear a facemask (and I don't plan to always have one in my bag).

So perhaps now I will actually only spend money on necessities (saving money) and I might even lose weight because of that because I won't go to the store just because I suddenly can't resist my cravings anymore.

I choose to see this as a good thing, even though I'm not that fond of wearing facemasks. :)
