I mentioned the other day that my brother is reading Problem Sleuth but didn't explain why

He's been trying for years to get me deeper into Star Wars, which has been basically his biggest fandom obsession since he was a little kid. I enjoy Star Wars and have seen all the movies but have been dragging my feet getting into the extended universe stuff because there's just so much of it and some of the shows sound more interesting to me than others

So the other day he proposed a deal: if I would agree to catch up on all of Star Wars, then he would finally read Homestuck.

That... seems like a pretty fair exchange to me.

Anyway I now have a file on my desktop titled "StarWarsHomework.txt" that lists every show or movie in chronological order. I've already watched the first 3 episodes of Tales of the Jedi. Next up, Phantom Menace rewatch.

#I had him start with Problem Sleuth partially to help him get all the references to it later #and partially because if he DIDN'T enjoy it then I was going to let him off the hook and not make him read Homestuck itself lol #the format and writing style is not for everyone after all #but thankfully he seems to like it so far! #anyway I might need a tag for this because I'm sure I'll have shit to say about all the SW stuff as I go along #SW HS exchange #the Dooku episodes of TotJ were really good btw. Favorite season: we just have sunny and rainy season here in the philippines, but i prefer the October to February period where it’s cold and windy but not too rainy. idk i just like being cold lmao

Favorite flower: uhhh aesthetic-wise, carnations. but the only flower i can recognize by smell is sampaguita.

Favorite scent: new books. old books. BOOKS. and jollibee chickenjoy.

Coffee, tea, of hot chocolate: if we’re talking hot drinks, then hot chocolate in the only one of those i can stand. i only drink iced or ice-blended coffee and milk tea bc i don’t really like hot drinks. wait. i can drink coffee hot but like after you pour a gallon of creamer on it so it’s basically milk.

Average hours of sleep: 5 to 6 hours. up to 12 hours on weekends if i’m recharging.

Cat or Dog person: both, really. but i guess i’m more comfy with dogs now since we have no less than 15 dogs in the house.

I CAN’T BIKE. i mean i know how to ride a bike. i ride bikes well! but i don’t know... how to... stop. i always crash. I’M A DISASTER.

since people only started calling me ‘Ali’ after college and at my first job, whenever someone i knew BEFORE that calls me ‘Ali’, i get whiplash and i’m like... shook... like... dude... who’s Ali?

usually people don’t like listening to music with lyrics when they code or write, but i HAVE to be singing words while coding or writing.

i am eldest of five siblings, but i usually feel like i have six younger sibs, instead of four, bc of two cousins live next door but are always in our house anyway.

i wasn’t comfy wearing dresses and skirts until third year college, i always felt like i’m not the type to wear them, and i didn’t have the confidence to be ~cute~. ‘till my best friend said i should wear a skirt on our movie date (it’s a trade-off, in exchange he shall shave his ugly goatee that i hated) and so i wore a skirt and holy shit i have seen the light, my thighs are free and they’re comfy and after that i finally let myself love and wear skirts and dresses and typically girlier stuff. :D

Fwufhdggh?? Tales of the Jedi episode 4?? Just fuck me up

Dooku's breaking point being the death of Qui-Gon is something that never crossed my mind holy shit. And the little scene with the tree where he reminisces about Qui-Gon as a boy.... that was basically his son, FUCK

#going in to work a little late today so I'm sneaking in an extra episode of SW #legit did not expect to be this invested this fast. I hope rewatching Attack of the Clones doesn't ruin this characterization for Dooku #because this is some QUALITY sad villain backstory right here #god the way it parallels Anakin's later downfall... how they're both just frustrated by the beauracracy preventing them from helping people #until they're faced with the loss of someone they love and they just SNAP #oh boy. oh man. I know I'm barely even getting started but I must concede we're off to a strong start #SW HS exchange #*bureaucracy (dammit I'm on mobileand in a hurry adjddfjsk)

...Okay well damn, season 2 is way better than 1 was. I'm actually getting kind of invested now

#ignore me #SW HS exchange #just finished s2e6. the one that introduces Barriss? and that was just a genuinely good episode #along with the one before it tbh! for such an action-heavy arc this has been a surprisingly attention-holding series of episodes #and even before that. the season opened with more of this Cad Bane bounty hunter guy and I'm REALLY liking him #every episode with him so far has been a winner #really the only sorta-mediocre episode this season has been the unconnected one-off (of course) with Padme acting as a spy #and that one would also have been good honestly if I hadn't been cackling like a hyena the whole time at Anakin's horrendous romantic drama #the opening scene of that ep was GENUINELY so sweet and nice with him bringing Padme dinner and them being all mushy together #but then the HYPOCRITE OF ALL TIME tells her that he has to go do Jedi stuff because ''duty comes first'' #AS IF HE HADN'T JUST SPENT A WHOLE EPISODE LAST SEASON WHINING TO HER ABOUT HOW SHE CHOOSES HER SENATE DUTIES OVER HIM #AND THEN HE TRIES TO BOSS HER AROUND AND KEEP HER FROM GETTING INVOLVED BUT SHE'S JUST LIKE ''actually eff off I do what I want'' #(which had me cheering out loud tbh. thank god Padme at least calls him out on his bullshit) #and then she kinda goes out of her way to piss him off and has a whole flirty thing with her old pal that's in love with her and ghdsjfa #it's so stupid and cringe and I couldn't help but love and hate it in equal measure

Just re-read all of Problem Sleuth to better discuss it with my brother as he goes along, but now I'm staring impatiently at the first page of Homestuck wanting to re-read that too but forcing myself to wait until he's at least done with PS

#SW HS exchange #PS is so silly and the ending is to this day one of the most elegantly tied-up conclusions to a big complicated story that I've ever read #there is SO MUCH going on in that chaotic mess and yet it all comes together and basically every single detail gets resolved neatly #anyway yeah it's just made me big time nostalgic for HS itself and I am sending my brother a psychic barrage to hurry it up lmao

.... lmao I defended Episode 1's honor as much as I could, but Attack of the Clones remains unwatchable

#SW HS exchange #the Anakin half at least. the Obi-Wan stuff is fine. maybe even interesting. but GOD every scene with Ani is rough #no chemistry no braincells no likable qualities at all really dfhajsfdk #he's such an unsettling CREEP it's just OOPS ALL RED FLAGS #which SUCKS because the exact same story can be told with exactly the same amount of tragedy and inner conflict #WITHOUT him being a pushy leering weirdo #(which is why moving forward I will be largely ignoring the canon version of his relationship with Padme #and mentally replacing it with something sweeter lmfAO... just to lend it the emotional weight the series wants it to have) #anyway this movie's like two decades old I know this has been discussed to death already. I'm just. gdjahsfdjsa #gotta get my thoughts out as I go y'know. that's the whole point of this exercise

Have been challenging myself to watch ~5 episodes of Star Wars stuff for each episode I let myself watch of TriStamp, to help motivate me through the slow seasons and get to the better arcs. Thought it'd double as a good way to make myself slow down and savor the new Trigun stuff, y'know?

Anyway I just finished episode 3 and I think I've made a terrible mistake

Hot take but Phantom Menace isn't as bad as it's made out to be, or even as bad as I remember it being

If you approach Jar Jar with an open mind and refuse to take his speech patterns as comedy, then he actually becomes an okay character. He's a klutz and doesn't think through every minor action, but most of the stuff he says and does is actually pretty reasonable for a regular dude being thrown into such a high-intensity situation. There are one or two slapstick moments that are still annoyingly unnecessary, but they're brief and he's not the only one guilty of those.

And while baby Anakin's acting is still pretty bad, it's also not as egregious as I remember. As for the writing, if you take some of the dumbest stuff he says and kinda overlay Christensen's face on him in your mind, you can see that he is written surprisingly consistently. Teen Anakin would be making exactly the same snarky boasts and "oops~ did I do that" excuses.

Plus since I watched Tales of the Jedi first, I know that there's a line where Qui-Gon tells Obi-Wan "You're a wiser man than I" that directly parallels what Dooku once said to him, and even though that's meaning that was added retroactively I still think it's rad as hell. More food for thought on the Dooku-was-kind-of-right train
