Hi this is kinda a weird recommendation ask but I’ve been watching a lot of shows with my dad in quarantine and I want to watch a kdrama with him but I want one that would impress him ya know? So do you have an recs that you think a 50 year old man would enjoy lmao

Fun Ask! I’ll try to channel what my dad would like (he’s probably not as cool as your dad though cause he’d never watch a k-drama with me). If you know the kind of genres he likes, I can probably be more specific with my recommendations but I hope this helps.

K-Dramas for Dad!

Secret Forest: It’s a super well done show. Like, amazing. Featuring a prosecutor who lacks emotions and a brilliant lieutenant who becomes his partner. They work to solve a murder as well as fight corruption at work. This one seems like your dad would be into it!

Terius Behind Me/ My Secret Terius: I absolutely love this k-drama about a secret agent in hiding who takes a job as the next door neighbors nanny. It’s funny, smart, and the characters are great! The villain is excellent and the neighbors add a ton of hilarious moments.

Kingdom: Historical Korea meets zombie outbreak, so a very unique setting. It is fast paced, intense and gorgeously filmed. If he can handle scary (it was a little hard for me!), the actors are sooooo good and the storyline is great. Plus, there are two seasons if he likes it and it’s very impressive to watch. Out of all of the recommendations, this is the one I imagine my dad being the most into.

Healer: A crowdpleaser featuring the cutest super hero known to man (just saying, you don’t have to tell your dad that’s why you want to watch it.) It’s an action adventure with really fun fight scenes and the news reporters that team up with our soft hero fight crime and try to unearth the truth about his father’s death.

I also want to recommend Signal. I personally didn’t finish it as it wasn’t my style of show, but it’s very popular and well loved (I think there might even be a season 2 in the making which is rare). A cop finds a walkie talkie that connects to a cop in the 80′s who helps him solve crimes. It’s very fast paced and I love the lady cop!

Rom Coms (vetted by men I know :-)

Fight For My Way: This is a rom com, so I don’t know how into it your dad would be, but it’s really funny and the couple is great! It’s about an MMA fighter and his best friends. This has a lot of romance so if he’s not into that, maybe skip it (but wait a minute, why wouldn’t he be??)

Shopping King Louie: The perfect example of a k-drama. It’s super trope-y and totally ridiculous but really funny! Seo In Guk plays a rich dude who loses his memory and ends up being taken care of by a poor girl from the country. Forced cohabitation, amnesia, chaebols, all of it.

Tell Dad I say Hi!

Ok, I’ll do this once again, as I did before, some of my favorite genres and my favorite dramas from it:

Slice of life

Can we get married: it’s not an easy watch, most of the characters are quite unlikeable, but there is a lot of great themes and discussions too. If you can get past the annoying mother-in-law dynamic, I highly recommend it because it’s worth it.

One spring night: finished it last week, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s slow-paced and the plot is mostly about this kinda engaged woman and this single father trying to make it work despite the societal pressure. It has one of the most realistic dialogues out there, and the characters are amazing. If you don’t like cheating or think emotional cheating is a thing I wouldn’t recommend it, but otherwise, it’s one of the best romantic dramas I’ve seen.

Heard it through the grapevine: it’s from the same director, and it’s a satirical take on rich families, but with a really clever script and competent actors. Kinda like sky castle, but less makjang. It’s about a couple (a middle-class girl and a son from a traditional family) of teens that get pregnant and have to deal with this new dynamic and make it work with his terrible family. It’s so fun to watch, sometimes infuriating, but there’s a lot to unpack there and the cast is amazing.

Action

Healer: hands down the best of the best, it has romance, action, mystery, secret identities, and it’s just really fun to watch. You’re never bored, the romance is on point, and all the characters are likable/compelling. The villain is good, but the drama is actually great at making time for every story without making you feel lost/tired of watching it. It’s a favorite of a lot of people here, if you haven’t watched it yet, please do.

My beautiful bride: this drama is the definition of love and devotion. The main lead will do whatever it takes to rescue his fiance, and it’s amazing to watch. The action is good, the fight scenes too, and the romance is just so well done. The villain is funny, and there are women doing stuff even though it’s an OCN drama, the concept!!! Really really good. A lot of blood and some disgusting scenes.

Heartless city: the same writer, and oh god, this drama broke my heart. It’s mainly an action drama, the romance is not the main thing about it, but it’s there. The friendship between the trio of bad guys is the best thing about it alongside the friendship between the two women (one of them is part of the main romance, the other part of the main trio). The drama has some weird plots going on, but it’s great and full of plot twists and great characters to cheer on. Best bromance in years. A lot of blood and some disgusting scenes.

School dramas:

School 2013: it’s slow-paced, there’s no romance, but the main leads friendship and the teachers make it work. It’s about trying to do better, how we impact others with our actions, mostly about second chances. The teens aren’t too dumb or too smart, they’re teens, the adults act like adults and there’s enough HS politics to make you engaged with, but not enough that will make you want to kill them. I’d advise it for some graphic scenes such as an attempt of suicide and violence.

Sassy go go: not the best drama out there, but one of my favorite onscreen friendships. The characters are all difficult, complex, and they mostly need a hug. The antagonist is amazing and I love her to pieces, the main romance is good, and Ji Soo is going to suffer in it too. It also deals with heavy stuff such as self-harm, some graphic scenes, an attempt of suicide, and abusive parents.

Seonam Girls High School Investigation: such a gem! probably one of the most unique dramas out there, although the script can be not that great. It deals with this group of girls that decide to investigate a lot of weird shit happening at their high school. It deals with a lot: sexual harassment, abortion, bullying and they actually showed the first wlw kiss in south korea television. It is really good. Even when you don’t agree with their view on some issues (me and the abortion, for example), you can see where they are coming from. It deserves some love and recognition. Jin Ji Hee is the best.

Dramas that are all over the place:

The king 2 hearts: it hurt me. I had physical pain watching this. It was so good! They have a mostly respectful take on north korea (like crash landing on you) although the leading accent is the most annoying thing I’ve heard in my life. The main dude is horrible, it will take you a lot to like him, but the drama has action, drama, romance, some comedy, and a lot of insane things going on. The villain will make you want to kill him with your bare hands. It’s amazing. Also some graphic scenes, but not as heavy as the action ones, tho.

Hello monster: what even is this drama? It’s delightful and so charming. The last episode was kinda iffy, but overall it’s really good. The main trio is great, a perfect chance to see park bo gum and seo in guk together before all that fame. It’s my favorite character of jang na ra and I had the best time watching this drama. It’s about this boy whose father was killed by this dude and was never caught. Now they want to find him, maybe he’s closer than we think. The mystery is not the most important part, but all of the dynamics of the drama. Amazing!

Sungkyunkwan scandal: a girl pretending to be a boy enters this university (it’s a sageuk!) and now she has to live with 3 other dudes and pretend she is a boy for real otherwise her family will probably die (so is she). There’s a mystery going on, but the charm is in its main leads. The three boys are amazing, the stoic lead that has some of the most unintentionally funny scenes, geol-oh as the kinda vigilante and always moody second lead (yoo ah in has the range to be the lead i will never forgive 2010 for this) and yeo-rim (yes, that’s my url, I’ve been geol-oh before too) as the flower boy rich dude totally in love with his best friend (he’s gay don’t @ me). 2010 gave you the song joong ki/yoo ah in bromance you didn’t think you needed before. park min young is incredible and her character is clever, nice, and so charming. I really love this dumb drama and I won’t ever forget the “I am the gay” scene. Perfection.

Kdrama review: Shopping King Louis

Master Kdrama rec list.

“When was the most memorable moment for you?” “Right now.”

The Premise.

Shopping King Louis follows Kang Ji Seong, aka “Louis,” a chaebol heir who loses all of his memories in a car accident. He is found wandering the streets by Go Bok Shil, a country girl who’s made her way to Seoul to try and find her missing brother. Together, they try to survive the big city, find Bok Shil’s brother, and recover Louis’s missing memories. It reminds me of Ouran High School Host Club, but in reverse (absurdly sheltered and rich kid tries to blend in with normal human beings), and with some MYSTERIOUS INTRIGUE thrown in.

Characters. There’s four mains, all of them INCREDIBLY DELIGHTFUL. Our title character...

Kang Ji Seong / “Louis”. The aforementioned chaebol heir who loses his memory, prior to his accident, Louis is known around the world as “The Shopping King” due to his incredible retail game. As a certified Lonely Rich Kid™, he uses internet shopping to fill the emotional void. He joins many other Kdrama leads in the Amazing Tracksuit Club

Louis is THE MOST PRECIOUS. He’s so damn cute they animate puppy features onto him. Adorable, clueless, and a fashionista, he does what he can to help make Bok Shil’s life better (which, sometimes, makes it worse). Confused, bewildered, and stumbling around as a Rich Kid of Instagram discovering instant coffee for the first time, the character makes you want to get him a cashmere blanket and a Godiva hot chocolate. Help him.

Then we have...

Go Bok Shil. Incredibly earnest and adorable, Go Bok Shil has spent most of her life in the remote, rural country and is therefore illiterate with technology at the beginning of the drama. She comes to Seoul to find her younger brother, who has left the countryside in favor of the city. Resourceful and scrappy, she learns quickly and does her best to navigate rapidly changing waters while working with Louis. Everytime she smiles a daisy blooms. Everytime she chases down an old woman who stole her shit an angel gets its wings. Look, her name literally means fluffy [ Elvis Costello’s “She” plays in the background ].

Our Second Lead Dude:

OSKA Director Cha Jong Woon. Director of merchandising at the online shopping company that Bok Shil eventually works for. He is aggressively not here for everything while simultaneously wearing a cravat and tiny, colored sunglasses. Dabs. A total grump who is actually a super nice guy to both Louis and Bok Shil, and gets a crush on the latter. Loves a good profit. Clears his throat and walks away whenever he is unhappy with the situation those two wacky drifters put him in.

Rounding out the mains, we have

Baek Ma Ri. Marie, get it? :D Louis’s childhood frenemy, who develops a one-sided crush on Louis because he’s going to inherit a shit ton of money and power. Not as bad as that summary just made her sound. Gets stuck on wacky and terrible roadtrips with Bok Shil and Louis’s downstairs neighbor. Works at the same marketing department as Bok Shil and Director Cha.

Review.

This is the perfect show if you want a RomCom. Like, perfect. The leads are adorable together, and the second lead dude is respectful and nice for the entire drama. I had a derpy smile on my face the whole time I watched it.

Drawbacks

-None.

-Okay, j/k. This is a Romcom at its heart, so if you’re looking for something with a meaty plot this might not be for you. It’s troperiffic in the best way, with a few, light twists to make it interesting but it’s not intense in terms of plot-driven storylines

-I wanted more with Ma Ri. Of the four, she got the least attention and I was hoping we would get a little more focus on her than what we did. Her storyline didn’t feel resolved to me

Reasons to Watch

-FLUFF. This is the fluffiest show I’ve ever watched. There are a few sad moments tied in for the #dramz, but overall this is just ridiculous cute and adorable. Perfect for if you’re feeling sick or having a rainy day

-COMEDY. I legit laughed out loud nearly every ep. For those that don’t know me, I don’t emote. So that’s a triumph in itself. The Rich Kid Out Of Water trope is one of my favorites, and the show executed it perfectly. The super-imposed animations and soundtrack cuts (“She” by Elvis Costello in particular) totally had me rolling

-The romance! Seo In Guk (Reply 1997, Master’s Sun) and Nam Ji Hyun (Suspicious Partner) are hilarious and adorable and you’re rooting for both of them the whole way through. There’s also a background pairing between Louis’s butler and his grandmother’s maid, who used to be a gang leader known as THE HAMMER OF BUSAN that is so A+++

We’re so ecstatic to have reached yet another milestone in such a short time. How long has it been? seven months? Time flies by when you’re having such a great time.

What’s your top 5 of Korean actors:)?

I love so many actors and actresses...this is so hard! Ok, I’ll do only actors since that’s what you asked (and besides, I’d never be able to narrow it down to 5 with both actors and actresses).

Below are the actors who I like so much that even if a show is 100% garbage, I’ll still give it a chance just to watch them.

Yoon Shi Yoon: I’ve started and dropped many a show for this dude - he knows how to pick some bad ones, but I know I’m going to try them anyways :P He’s just such a funny and dynamic actor I get so much joy out of watching him do his thing. No one could have played the Psychopath Diary role as well as him - he MADE that show. And Flower Boy Next Door & The Best Hit? I can’t imagine anyone else but him in those.

Lee Junho: I know he hasn’t been in a ton of films but he is my bias wrecker (don’t ask...I’m working on this issue)? He stole my heart in Just Between Lovers and he has great chemistry with everyone. I even watched Confession, while super good is NOT my cup of tea at all. It was worth it just to see him! I think he has a knack for generally picking interesting dramas too. #hearteyes for my triple threat cat lover.

Seo In Guk: Hello Monster, Shopping King Louie, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes... All of these are in my top tier of dramas I love. He’s quirky and unusual, and his duality of playing super silly roles as well as damaged trauma babies is incredible.

Ji Chang Wook: I’m still salty about Melting me Softly but I love Ji Chang Wook. He doesn’t always pick amazing roles but he’s so effin’ soft and adorable to watch. You all know he’s my bias so I find anything he does hard to resist. I mean look at that image! His face is just astonishing to me. Plus he was Healer and that just never goes away.

Yoo Ah In: You can tell that Yoo Ah In is a literal movie star. He nails all of his k-drama roles from The Secret Affair to Chicago Typewriter but is also really great (though weird) in movies like Burning. Like Seo In Guk he just brings an usual and unique feel to all of his roles and has something really special about him.

I feel like I’m missing people but I went with my gut reaction!

Ji Chang Wook

Favorite Role: (Seo Jung-Hoo, Healer)

He is the softest, sweetest and constantly napping super hero to exist. I love that he did a lot of his own stunts and his behind the scenes videos from Healer and Suspicious Partner made him my bias.

Lee Junho

Favorite Role: Lee Gang Doo, Just Between Lovers

2pm’s Junho was not even on my radar until I saw him play a traumatized puppy who falls in love with another traumatized puppy. Lee Gang Doo is one of my absolute favorite characters of all time and seeing him speak fluent japanese at a fan meet made him my bias wrecker. And now I’m super into his cheesy music too! What happened? Pls send help now that he’s in the military D:

Jung Hae In

Favorite Role: Ji Ho, One Spring Night

This boy has the puppy-beta-male-who-loves-a-noona-DOWN, and that’s totally my aesthetic ;-) I first noticed him in while you were sleeping and instantly was charmed by him.

Favorite Role: Da Bong, The Best Hit

I find Yoon Shi Yoon to be such a dynamic and funny to watch actor. I love his range and he’s just a beautiful goof. Does he always pick good parts? Heck no. Will I watch all of them anyways just to give him a chance? Of course.

Seo Kang Joon

Favorite Role: Nam Shin & Nam Shin III, Are You Human, too?

Ok. I know that Are you Human Too isn’t a solid show, I know that. But. Have you met the sweetest most beta, most gorgeous AI alive? It’s worth watching just for the lead couple. He’s a good example of how I actually like Nam Shin III as opposed to liking an actor.

Favorite Role: this is hard…Kim Moo Young, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes maybe?

Dude is so talented that it’s hard to choose between Shopping King Louis and The Smile has left your eyes (plus hello monster was great). He’s an idol turned actor but definitely an amazing actor in his own right, plus ummm his lips?

Favorite Role: Do Min Ik, The Secret Life of My Secretary

I had honestly never seen him in anything before but listen, he’s my style ok? Tall, thin, his LIPS - I saw adorable gifs of Gogh’s Starry Night and have it on my watch list now since I’d like to stare at him a little longer.

Yoo Ah In

Favorite Role: This one is also hard… Best Kiss: Chicago Typewriter. Best Character: Lee Sun Jae from Secret Love Affair

Yoo Ah In is not normally my “Type,” but he’s a good example of how his characters made me fall for him. The combination of those two shows clinched him as one of my favorite actors. If you saw Burning you’d know he’s a super star (though uhhh what a weird problematic movie?) He’s a super hard worker and lives with a chronic pain illness (he was exempt from the military because of this) and I admire his hard working spirit. I just also like the way he kisses? It’s unique to him, like he can’t really help himself but also seems torn? I love it lol.

Go Kyung Pyo

Favorite Role: Speaking of Chicago Typewriter…Yoo Jin Oh

Go Kyung Pyo is usually type casted as my favorite type of boy. He plays soft beta males in Strongest Delivery Man, Jealousy Incarnate, Flower Boy Next Door and Chicago Typewriter. What a cutie.

Kwak Shi Yang

Favorite Role: Chef in Oh My Ghostess

Sometimes I just have a type and he is it. I love tall skinny boys that aren’t super built… Anyways, I’ve been told I have a type LOL. I love him! He never plays anyone nice, and he’s rarely a lead. I’m just putting this out there: He’s CUTE make him a nice beta romantic lead for ME!

Park Seo Joon

Favorite Role: Dong Man, Fight My Way

Park Seo Joon is the perfect example of someone who is NOT MY TYPE (he’s very built ok?) but played a role that made me love him. After he was in Fight My Way and I saw him in Witches Romance (those kisses!) I was in.

Lee Min Ho

Favorite Role: …..

Ok, to be fair, he was the first hallyu actor I ever liked (i know i know, very predictable!) so I’ll watch him in most things. These days, I’m pretty aware that he’s not the best actor and some of his roles are extremely problematic. But I’d feel like I would be betraying him since I loved him in Legend of the Blue Sea and Boys Over Flowers was the first kdrama I saw. Plus he IS my tall skinny with prominent nose type and that’s still true :)

Yoo Seung Hoo

Favorite Role: Bok Soo, My Secret Hero

Honestly I think this guy is another one of those “just my type” people because I think he is just gorgeous. BUT he’s also really good at emoting love and sadness which makes him a fun romantic lead to watch.

Shin Hyun Soo

Favorite Role: (Hyun Oh, 12 nights)

I’ve only seen him as a soft beta male which might be why I like him so much and he is a tol.

Yong Se Jong

Favorite Role: Woo Jin, Thirty But Seventeen

Honestly he’s just cute and look at his smile. But in Thirty But Seventeen he was also a soft precious trauma baby which makes him very attractive to me.

Yeo Jin Goo

Favorite Role: Hae Sung, Reunited Worlds

I have a love hate relationship with a lot of his dramas, but the boy can act and he is seriously gorgeous. It must be weird leaving the house everyday with a face like that.

Kim Jae Wook

Favorite Role: No Sun Ki, Coffee Prince

Stylistically in Coffee Prince, boy ticks all the boxes. He wears black nail polish and his hair, I’m in love. But nowadays he plays more adult roles and he has this chiseled look I normally don’t go for but I can’t deny he’s stunning.

Jang Ki Yong

Favorite Role: Nah Moo, Come And Hug Me

Come and Hug me was the perfect combination of tragedy, romance and trauma so obviously I fell in love with both leads. Like, his teared up eyes, I can’t. And lets face it, he was the perfect boyfriend for our noona in Search: WWW.
