Maigret enjoying male company
Tumblr media
Apart from when he is with his wife (played in the Rupert Davies series by Helen Shingler), very rarely does Maigret interact with women other than as witnesses, suspects or victims.
Tumblr media
He clearly prefers the company on gentlemen. Preferably pipe or cigar-smoking gentlemen.
Tumblr media
This is a particularly good example: a beefy, handsome, mature, cigar-smoking gentleman. I like to imagine they are working towards putting their drinks down and heading for bed... I know I wouldn't turn either of them down.

Quatermass II (BBC, 1955)
"Enemy territory ahead. Hard, unwinking stars. No atmosphere to deceive us. We're seeing them as they really are. And somewhere ahead... an object. Constructed, if it is constructed, by creatures whose very existence makes us fools. Somewhere. Boneless creatures able to make energy at will by changing their mass; able to transmit experience; to maintain power over other creatures."

Robinson does visibly struggle with some of the scientific jargon and dense#technobabble but he's generally p good. alas‚ a taut and harrowing 5 episode set up is all but undone in the profoundly disappointing part#a mixture of shoddy fx‚ bad science and a sudden grinding halt to the action ends one of Kneale's darkest works on a resounding whimper#still it's a minor miracle we have the whole series to enjoy and the preceeding 5 eps are a superb example of very adult sci fi for tv#also what a cast! a pre stardom Rupert Davies crops up for one ep‚ baby Roger Delgado is very tragic‚ oscar winner Hugh Griffith is#Quatermass' right hand arm... a special bit of old tv and a damn good story that still stands up today

Some vintage TV heaven - plus Maigret's Memoirs!! #maigret #rupertdavies
Something perhaps a little different here on the Ramblings today, as I wanted to go on a little about a wonderful televisual experience I’ve been having over the past year!! Regular visitors will know that I’m not much of a television watcher (apart from a good documentary or – guilty pleasure – Susan Calman doing silly travelling programmes!) However, I love vintage TV (original Doctor Who was…

Rupert Lisburn Gwynne Davies - 1916-1976
I know it couldn't be too long before I re-visited this handsome man.
Tumblr media
I just spent an evening with Brian smoking our pipes and watching Maigret smoking his (before getting up to other things...).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although he was best known for playing Maigret (and in my view has never been bettered), he was also known for many other dramas, including being the first to play John Le Carré's George Smiley in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With moustache as well! I also love the glasses and that increasingly thick neck.
Tumblr media
Here, Davies with pipe and a fellow actor smoking a cigar. Now that is what I call a meeting of men. I'm imagining them getting a little closer together until they're locked in a hot, smoky, passionate kiss.

Man in a Suitcase: The Man Who Stood Still (1.14, ITC, 1967)
"A letter, Mr. McGill. Addressed to you and found in your clothing. A letter from the FAI - the Anarchist Federation of Spain, which fought against the present government in the civil war."
"Wait a minute, friend, don't let this grey hair fool you that much. That war finished about the time I was born."
#man in a suitcase#the man who stood still#itc#1967#classic tv#raymond bowers#peter duffell#richard bradford#rupert davies#cyril shaps#alex scott#philip bond#jeanna l'esty#neville becker#hira talfrey#ricardo montez#harry h. fielder#unique among MiaS eps for being the only episode Albert Elms didn't record incidental music for; instead Freddie Phillips provides some#very nice spanish guitar tracks. yes we're in Spain‚ for a twisty turny (but essentially pretty light hearted) plot that relates to the#spanish civil war. i remembered almost nothing of this episode‚ possibly bc little me didn't fully understand the nuances of the#various characters political affiliations‚ or maybe bc this is an ep which sort of sidelines McGill; he's very much a passive traveller in#the store here‚ pushed and manipulated by bigger personalities. Davies had been a fairly big film star in the uk and of course had starred#as Maigret on the bbc earlier in the decade; he was just making the transition to character actor at this point and would spend the rest of#his life playing older support in horror films and the like (he died aged 60 in '76). having McGill on the sidelines means we get less#nice little character bits from Bradford‚ but he shines in a scene in which he attempts to tell Davies' much put down wife (and non english#speaker) how beautiful she is in his broken spanish. the minor twist in the ending wasn't in the original script and may have been worked#out by cast and crew during rehearsal
