The Pitching Staff Model for Human Relationships
I was thinking about friendship and human relationships and finally solved them, so I wanted to share with the world so the world may benefit from my research.
Inspiration was the Ron Swanson perspective on knowing other people and the Seinfeld "I already have like 3 friends" scene. The Dunbar number (you can only know like 150 people) is frequently tossed around, but it may be bullshit. Or not.
The point is I only have the energy to care about a handful of people. (Likewise, parasocial relationships are weird to me, why do I care what a guy who fake screams at video games does?).
Anyway, I was thinking about this in the shower, where all great ideas happen, and it came to me in a flash of enlightenment the Buddhists call satori. The answer was baseball. It always is.
Specifically, managing your social relationships is exactly like managing a pitching staff.
To wit:
The Starters
Tumblr media
The five best guys usually start your games. Think of these as "The Boys". (See above illustration). ((I know there are 4, but the 5th one is you, because we're friends now)).
These are the people you would call if you were in jail first because they would probably help bail you out and not ask things like "Did you do it?"
The roles are:
#1: Your ace pitcher, the best guy on the team. In human relationships this is your best friend, maybe your partner. Barring a big blowup, they're signed for life and replacing them is a pain in the ass. If you don't have one, you're probably in a world of shit. Comps: Shohei Ohtani, Gerritt Cole.
#2: Your second-best guy. Your best friend if you have a partner. Not quite as good, but still up there. Also a pain in the ass to replace. Comps: Jameson Taillon, Taijuan Walker.
#3: Probably the most undervalued starting pitcher, the #3 starter is steady, reliable, and always there for you. You're not quite as close as the first two and they maybe aren't as good, but they're damn good and they're reliable and less of a pain in the ass. I think of Mike Mussina, maybe late-period Andy Pettitte here.
#4: They're really good but also easier to replace, you can probably pick them up on the free agent market if you need to. You need one but it's not a high priority. They can still surprise you and bring the heat. This could be an older pitcher on his way out like Kershaw, or on a stacked roster like Scherzer (#4 starting pitcher in usage on the 2022 Mets, look it up).
#5: You need a fifth starter if you want to win it all, but you can also pull from the bullpen, minors, maybe let someone pick up a spot start here and there. May be on their way up or down.
The Bullpen
Just as critical in baseball as in human relationships are your bullpen staff. These guys probably aren't people you talk to every day but still serve useful roles in the organization. Pictured below.
Tumblr media
Bullpen management is both art and science, but there are some set roles like:
Set-Up Guys: Reliable guys that maybe aren't as good as your closer, but together they are more than the sum of their parts, one contributes where the rest lack.
Closer: Who is going to come through for you when absolutely everything is on the line? Maybe not your best friend day to day, but in short periods, when you absolutely need them, they got you.
Long Relievers: You probably don't want them starting regularly for good reasons, but every now and then, they can step in and eat some innings. You definitely want them, but they are fungible commodities, and there's probably some kids in the minor leagues that can do it if you need to.
Specialists: The guys who do one single thing or serve a specific role and do it well but that's all they do. Your guy who fixes your car or knows how to score drugs or concert tickets or drugs and concert tickets. You probably don't hang out with them a lot for good reasons, but they're useful to know. The LOOGY of human relations (RIP The LOOGY).
The Minors
Tumblr media
Your organization doesn't, strictly speaking, need a good minor league system to win one year, but your life will be a happier one with a rich and robust minor league organization. Ideally you have a AAA of friendship where you can call upon guys for spot starts or eventually come in and make the major league staff. Cultivation of one's friendship talent is important for longer term health of the organization, however, and no general manager worth his salt neglects the minor leagues.
Anyway, all human relationships are solved now. You're welcome.

New York Yankees Home Baseball Stadium Yankee Stadium
#NewYorkYankees #Yankees #YankeeStadium The New York Yankees is a professional baseball team from the Major League Baseball (MLB) American League East District. Headquartered in Yankee Stadium, New York Bronx, NY. Known as one of the most prestigious teams in the Major League Baseball, it has 40 American Championships, 18 Regional Champions since 1969, 40 World Series appearances, and 27 Championships. This figure is far behind other teams, compared to the San Francisco Giants with 20 runners-up in the World Series and 11 St. Louis Cardinals with runner-ups. Started as Baltimore Orioles when the American League was founded in 1901, it was directed by John McGraw. However, due to the conflict between American League President Johnson and McGraw, McGraw moved to the New York Giants of the National League and created friction with the National League, but eventually decided to move to New York, and in 1903, he moved to New York. Moved as Highlanders. He relocated to the New York Yankees in 1913 after relocating the home field, acquired Babe Ruth from the Red Sox in 1920, and then reigned as a powerful team in the ball world, with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe -Produced star players such as DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, etc., and it has been a team that has always attracted attention since then, such as Reggie Jackson in the 1970s, Derek Jeter in the 1990s, Alex Rodriguez in the 2000s. Yankee Stadium The old Yankee Stadium, which has been in use since 1923, has become obsolete. Provisionally agreed. The plan was temporarily frozen when Michael Bloomberg became Mayor of New York in 2002, but the decision was made to build a new stadium and a groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 16, 2006, the 58th anniversary of Babe Ruth. [4]. Construction costs were $ 1.5 billion. An open match against Chicago Cubs took place on April 3 before the 2009 regular season, and the Yankees won. The first official game will be held on April 16 against Cleveland Indians. The construction cost of $ 1.5 billion raised ticket prices, and the average seat price per seat was $ 70 (at the time of opening, the exchange rate was about ¥ 7000). On June 5, 2010, Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Kot, a professional boxing WBA world super welterweight title match, was held. This is the first Yankee stadium of course, but including the old stadium, it is the first time in 34 years since Muhammed Ali vs Ken Norton in September 1976. The college football game, Army vs. Notre Dame, took place on November 20 of the same year, and Notre Dame beat Army 27-3. A college football game was also held on December 30. After that, college football games are held in the off-season of MLB and MLS. In the summer of 2012 and 2013, soccer pre-season matches and international friendly matches were also held. On January 26, 2014, the NHL (North American Professional Ice Hockey) game was held for the first time including the old stadium. Since 2015, MLS (Major League Soccer) New York City FC has been using it as a temporary home stadium until the construction of a dedicated stadium. Major League Baseball roundup: Tigers lose game, Cabrera
Ehire Adrianza smacked his first career grand slam, lifting the Minnesota Twins past the host Detroit Tigers 6-4 on Tuesday night.
Jun 12, 2018; Detroit, MI, USA; Minnesota Twins shortstop Ehire Adrianza (16) hits a grand slam in the seventh inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
The bigger loss for the Tigers, was Miguel Cabrera. The veteran first baseman left the game in the third inning with ruptured left biceps tendon, and he will undergo season-ending surgery.
Cabrera sustained the injury on a swing and miss at a Jake Odorizzi breaking pitch.
Adrianza’s seventh-inning homer, his third of the season, gave the Twins a three-run lead. Adrianza had three hits and scored twice.
Yankees 3, Nationals 0
Didi Gregorius homered twice, leading New York past visiting Washington.
Gregorius recorded his fourth career multi-homer game and third this season. He set a team record for multi-homer games by a shortstop in a single season and homered for the first time since May 23.
CC Sabathia (4-1) allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings and became the fifth pitcher to get 1,500 strikeouts for the Yankees. He joined Andy Pettitte, Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing.
Phillies 5, Rockies 4
Aaron Nola pitched 6 2/3 strong innings, and Scott Kingery homered and knocked in four runs to lead Philadelphia past visiting Colorado.
Nola (8-2) allowed just one run on four hits and no walks. He struck out 10. Philadelphia led 5-1 through eight innings, but Colorado scored three times in the ninth before leaving the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Rockies starter Jon Gray (6-7) gave up four runs on just three hits in six innings. He walked four and fanned 10.
Brewers 4, Cubs 0
Chase Anderson, Taylor Williams and Jacob Barnes combined to pitch a two-hit shutout as host Milwaukee cruised to a win over Chicago.
Travis Shaw finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and a season-high four RBIs to lead the Brewers at the plate. Anderson (5-5) allowed one hit and two walks while striking out six in seven innings.
Willson Contreras and Addison Russell tallied the only hits for Chicago, which was blanked for the fifth time this year. The Cubs lost to the Brewers for only the second time in 10 meetings this season.
Rays 4, Blue Jays 1

Sport - as it happened cheap blackhawks jersey
Bartman, pilloried at every turn and advised by the police not to go into work, goes into hiding. To this day he has not spoken about the incident that carries his name.It was his misfortune to have added a further slice of ill luck to a club burdened by a cake full of the stuff. Eric Neel summed up the despair felt by the fans. "We're just like Icarus today, cheap nike nfl jerseys baby, nothing but a close-but-no-cigar mess of wax and bones. The Cubs didn't lose, the Cubs are losing itself. We define the concept so that winning has meaning. We are the yardstick, the baseline. You get me?"
As ever the anonymous reactions on the internet are ugly and chilling examples of mob rule. "Death to Steve Bartman" message boards are set up. There are pictures of Bartman in Saddam Hussein's bunker and mug shots of Bartman as the lead suspect in the Washington DC sniper shootings. He is vilified.
Jay Mariotti, a sports columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, nfl cheap jerseys writes: "A fan in that situation should try his best to get out of the way, even if he isn't of the mind to see Alou approaching, as Bartman claims. Still, he's also a human being who was reacting in a tense, unusual moment. And the resulting verbal abuse and trash-hurling, followed by the Neanderthal threats and creepy reaction on the internet, hasn't reflected well on Chicago's sports culture. As it is, everyone thinks the prototypical local fans are those mopes from the Superfans skits on Saturday Night Live."
Meanwhile, the ball, which, perhaps inevitably, was ambulance-chased by a Chicago lawyer, is sold at an auction in December 2003 and purchased by Grant DePorter for $113,824.16 (£70,091) on behalf of Harry Caray's Restaurant Group. On 26 February 2004 it is publicly detonated by the special effects expert Michael Lantieri, cheap nfl jerseys free shipping with the remains of the ball being used by the restaurant in a pasta sauce.Boringly, health and safety considerations come in to play, preventing any part of the ball adding some much needed chew to the bolognese. Instead, the steam of the ball is captured, distilled, and added to the final concoction. A style of cooking we haven't seen enough of during this year's Masterchef: The Professionals.
On the small screen, an episode of Law and Order features a character called "the foul ball guy" who is murdered in a bar. "It was gratuitous," is the verdict of Bartman's lawyer, Frank Murtha. And now Alex Gibney, cheap soccer jersey who directed Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, is making a documentary about the poor man. "It's not the search for Bartman," he has said. "It is about how does one become a scapegoat?" Which may not completely reassure the fan who reached out too far.
The New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 yesterday to complete a three-game sweep of their division series and set up an American League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels rallied to beat the Red Sox 7-6 in Boston to complete a sweep of their own.
New York's Alex Rodriguez, who tied Friday's game with a home run in the bottom of the ninth, tied the score at 1-1 in the seventh with a long homer off Minnesota starter Carl Pavano. Two batters later, Jorge Posada cleared the wall in left with another solo shot. custom baseball jerseys cheap The visiting Yankees added two more runs in the ninth to set up the meeting with the Angels, the winner earning a spot in the World Series."We want to win a World Series," Yankees starter Andy Pettitte said. New York's last Fall Classic win came in 2000. "We took a step here to move on. We're going to have a nasty series. It's going to be a war between us and the Angels."
New York's seventh-inning surge broke up a pitchers' duel between Pavano and Yankees left-hander Pettitte. Pettitte, who tied John Smoltz for most the post-season wins with 15, gave up three hits in 6 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out seven as New York improved to 10-0 against the Twins this season.Pavano, sports jerseys cheap a former Yankees pitcher, went seven innings and struck out nine without issuing a walk. A base-running blunder ruined a Twins rally in the eighth after Nick Punto had led off with a double off Yankees reliever Phil Hughes.
Denard Span followed with a high bouncer up the middle and Punto charged around third base with an eye toward making a dash to home, but shortstop Derek Jeter did not try to throw out Span at first base and instead threw to catcher Posada at home plate.
It was the last Twins game to be played at the Metrodome, and as the Yankees celebrated in the middle of the diamond, ground staff began digging up home plate to move it across the street to their new park.
Minnesota's manager, Ron Gardenhire, saluted the Yankees. "That's a great baseball team over there," he said. "You have to tip your hat to them, the best record in baseball. They just keep running great hitters up there."They deserve all the accolades. Great bullpen, broncos jersey cheap bench, the whole deal. I hate it when we play against them because they kill us, but I enjoy watching Jeter and A-Rod and those guys play." Minnesota Twins all but put the Chicago White Sox out of the play-off picture with a 8-6 win, which also keeps the Twins within reach of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. Nick Punto had three RBIs and scored two runs for the Twins and Brian Duensing improved to 5-0 as a starter. Jermaine Dye hit two homers as the White Sox went down to a fourth straight defeat.
Detroit clinched its three-game set in Cleveland as the Tigers beat the Indians 11-3. A two-homer, four-RBI night from Carlos Guillen sealed it for Detroit, who had a four-run first inning off Justin Masterson. cheap nba basketball jerseys Miguel Cabrera added a two-run home run in the fourth. The New York Yankees celebrated their play-off spot by rounding out a series win with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. I first discovered six time Juno Award winner Serena Ryder a couple of years ago when I heard a live concert broadcast on CBC radio. I liked it. She had a different sound than a lot of newer artists. When she was booked to play Kingston a short time after, I bought tickets to attend. I have been a Serena Ryder fan since that night. I was amazed by her powerful voice and her five-octave range. She did not disappoint on Friday night at Ottawa Jazz Festival. It was another stellar performance by the Millbrook, Ontario native.

Serena got the show started with her smash hit “Stompa”, from the album, Harmony. The crowd was singing along with her throughout the evening and even dancing to her newest single  “I’ve Got Your Number”. During the middle part of the concert, the band took a break while Serena entertained with some acoustic songs, interacting with the crowd all the while. When a fan called out one of their favorites, Serena didn’t hesitate to change guitars and oblige the fan.

During the evening, we heard some of the new songs from Utopia, such as “Got Your Number” and “Electric Love”, as well as many of the songs we have come to know Serena for such as “Heavy Love”, “Baby Come Back”, “Oh What I Wouldn’t Do”, “Mary Go Round” and “Weak In The Knees”.

If you have yet to experience Serena Ryder live, do yourself a big favour and go when you get the chance. Her energy, showmanship, unique voice and songwriting ability, combined with a great band, make her one of the best artists to experience live. She is a favourite of mine to be sure.

Oakland Athletics 1 cheap sports jerseys
Andy Pettitte was very good, going seven strong, allowing three runs on just seven hits. It wasn't enough tonight against Wei-Yin Chen who was just a touch better. These teams have played it very tight so far, and I can only expect for it to be close the rest of the way. cheap hotels in jersey city This is shaping up to be a classic series with two teams that know each other well. It feels epic, and yet it has only been two games.
The teams have an off day tomorrow and then we'll be back to cover Game Three from Yankee Stadium. In the mean time, we have two games for you tomorrow, first the Cincinnati Reds look to finish off the San Francisco Giants at 530EST followed by Detroit vs. Oakland as the Tigers look to sweep the A's at 930EST. blackhawks jersey cheap The story of the game? That would be Barry Zito. A total joke at the start of the game, Barry Zito pitched 7 2/3rds scoreless innings and has almost single-handedly forced a NLCS Game 6. I cannot even fathom what just happened here, but it happened.
The St. Louis Cardinals still have two more chances to win one game and head to the World Series to face the Detroit Tigers. However, the Cardinals will have to do it on the road. NLCS Game 6 will be 7:30pm EST on Sunday, the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter vs. the Giants' Ryan Vogelsong and we will have coverage here at the Guardian. That will do it from us today. Thanks to everybody who read and everybody who contributed. dallas cowboys jerseys cheap Ciao!Cueto had the shortest postseason start in eight years when back spasms forced him to leave while pitching to the second batter of the game. Reliever Sam LeCure and scheduled Game 3 starter Mat Latos held the Giants scoreless until Buster Posey's leadoff homer off Latos in the sixth. If Cueto's injury isn't serious, he could come back and take Latos' spot in the rotation in Game 3.
Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce homered off San Francisco' Matt Cain - the first earned runs Cain had ever allowed in the postseason, ending a run of 23 1/3 innings that was the fifth-longest ever. cheap insurance in new jersey Cincinnati had taken the lead on Phillips' one-out homer in the third that also scored Drew Stubbs. Bruce added a solo shot in the fourth. It was the Reds first postseason win since 1995, having lost seven straight since then in the 1995 NLCS to Atlanta and the division series two years ago to Philadelphia.
Cueto's outing was the shortest start in the postseason since Atlanta's John Thomson also only retired one Houston batter in Game 3 of the 2004 NLDS. He threw just four pitches before leaving injured. The Detroit Tigers ride Justin Verlander's 7 inning, 11 strikeouts pitching performance to a 1-0 ALDS series lead against the Oakland Athletics. Game two of the series is tomorrow at noon. Despite Verlander's performance, which was dominant and fun to watch, cheap nike nfl jerseys I think what I'll remember most about this game is Pat Neshek coming out and being effective out of the bullpen for the Oakland A's so shortly after losing his newborn son. Sometimes we overrate what athletes have to overcome, but in Neshek's case, I don't really think that's possible.
That's kind of a bummer note to end tonight's baseball coverage here from the Guardian, but maybe we can take some solace in the knowledge that his wonderful game can help take our mind off of troubles, even if for the shortest bit of time. cheap nfl football jerseys The Rangers had been aiming for their third consecutive World Series appearance. The Orioles advance to play the East champion Yankees, the AL's top seed. The teams split 18 games this season as Baltimore raced New York neck-and-neck until the last day of the regular season.
The Rangers had high hopes of another shot at the World Series after being in first place of the AL West for 178 days - the longest any MLB team has ever led its division but not won it. The Rangers lost the AL West crown on the final day of the regular season, after being swept in three games at Oakland for a stretch of nine losses in their last 13 games.
Their worst slump of the season came at the wrong time for Ron Washington's team, which a week ago had a four-game division lead with six games to play. cheap nfl jerseys free shipping Because of that, they couldn't avoid the AL's new winner-take-all wildcard game, and then couldn't get past their Orioles with their top pitcher on the mound.
When the Rangers committed more than $107 million last winter to acquire Darvish, they did so with the anticipation he'd be on the mound for many big games. They would not have anticipated him being outdueled in a playoff game by Joe Saunders, a late-season addition by the Orioles who had lost all six of his previous starts at Rangers Ballpark with a 9.38 ERA.
Darvish struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. At one point, manager Ron Washington and pitching coach Mike Maddux had to be accompanied to the pitching mound by Darvish's translator, Joe Furukawa, when the pitcher looked injured. The six umpires conferred before allowing the translator to come out while Darvish kept stretching and then threw a couple of pitches.

Athletics and Cardinals cheap cowboys jerseys
Wily Peralta (11-15) gave up five hits and walked five in five-plus innings for the Brewers. The Cardinals put the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, but closer Jim Henderson got slugger Matt Adams to strike out to end the game and earn his 26th save.Oakland's Coco Crisp hit a three-run homer, and Daric Barton and Jed Lowrie each had solo shots as the Athletics overpowered the Minnesota Twins 11-7. cheap authentic soccer jerseys The Athletics, who had MLB's fourth-lowest, opening day payroll at about $65 million, clinched their 16th division crown and 25th postseason appearance when Texas lost 4-0 at Kansas City earlier.
Sonny Gray (4-3) gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings, while Oswaldo Arcia homered and drove in six runs for Minnesota. The 22-year-old left-hander allowed one hit and four walks in 4 2-3 shutout innings. Brandon Gomes (3-1) followed and struck out Manny Machado with a runner on second.
The Kansas City Royals blanked the Texas Rangers 4-0 after Justin Maxwell hit a two-out grand slam in the 10th off former Royals All-Star closer Joakim Soria. Eric Hosmer hit a two-strike double leading off the 10th against Neal Cotts (5-3). Soria intentionally walked Billy Butler, and an infield single by Salvador Perez loaded the bases. At New York, after honoring Mariano Rivera in a pregame ceremony and celebrating Andy Pettitte's last regular-season home start, cheap custom football jerseys the Yankees saw their AL wild-card hopes dim in a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.
In other AL games, the Cleveland Indians downed the Houston Astros 9-2, the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3, the Seattle Mariners edged the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2.In the NL, the Cincinnati Reds trounced the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3, the New York Mets edged the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3, authentic nfl jerseys cheap the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the San Diego Padres 1-0 and the Arizona Diamondbacks were 13-9 winners over the Colorado Rockies.
I love the idea that the Yankees, who for decades were run by an owner who was suspended by baseball not once but twice, whose current GM tells his players publicly to "shut the fuck up" are seen as this classy organization, but I suppose that's another conversation.Back to business - what's left of baseball purists will likely believe that the best way to keep opponents from celebrating in your pool is not to have one in your stadium in the first place.
This is just the latest case of baseball players proving themselves to be the world's most sensitive athletes - is it me or does it seem like every week brings about another unwritten baseball rule controversy? Now the Dodgers are supposedly "classless" because they jumped in a pool (didn't you know, that's in the book also?). cheap soccer jerseys from china I suppose that the D'Backs consider the pool to be some sort of sacred ground, but I still have to disagree with the reaction from Bloomquist.
The Dodgers completed one of the more dramatic turnarounds in baseball history, going from the basement in late June to a division title, and that is certainly an achievement worthy of a celebratory dip. After toweling off, manager Don Mattingly and his band of $200m stars will attempt to find the balance between getting some rest while staying sharp. Mattingly would be wise to keep his regulars on the field for most of the remaining season, baseball being a sport of timing and repetition that can only be honed by playing in real games, even if they mean little in the standings.
The Texas Rangers are in the midst of their second consecutive late season collapse. cheap soccer jerseys for sale However, unlike a season ago, this current Rangers slide could see them out of the playoffs altogether. With just 10 games to go, With just 10 games to go, Texas are fighting for their postseason existence, mired in a muck of soul destroying baseball. On August 31st, Texas were in the thick of a race for the American League West division title, up a pair of games on their rivals, the Oakland A's, and seemingly in control. They had just finished off their best month of the campaign, winning 20 games, despite the loss of slugger Nelson Cruz to a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. In fact, their offense had not slowed down a bit - even without one of their key cogs in a lineup that averaged close to six runs per game in August. Meanwhile, the pitching staff put up their best numbers of the season during the month, and so the team was cruising - coolstandings.com put their chances at October baseball at 97.1%.
Then, suddenly, as the calendar flipped over, their bats died, slumbering to under 3.5 runs per game while a handful of their pitchers completely forgot how to throw. Next thing you know the division race was virtually over and the panic was back in Arlington, where they recently dropped six games in a row. Altogether, cheap stitched nfl jerseys they are 4-13 in September, now battling a pack of six AL teams trying to shoehorn themselves into two playoff spots, 6.5 games behind Oakland - that's a swing of more than eight games in 19 days, during which their chances of reaching the postseason has plummeted by more than 30%.
This is a different story to 2012, when the Rangers coughed up a five game AL West lead in the blink of an eye. On September 24th, with just nine games to go, cheap cruises from new jersey they had a 95% chance of winning the division, only for their season to fall apart at a blistering pace. The freefall made the A's unlikely division winners - the consolation prize was a one game wildcard game at home to Baltimore. They lost 5-1. Just like that, a season in which a third straight World Series appearance was well within in reach, was over.
This time around the agony seems destined to be spread across an entire month rather than 10 grim days. When the Rangers went out and acquired Matt Garza to bolster their pitching staff, cheap nike jerseys they couldn't have thought they would be getting a pitcher that would allow more than eight runs per nine innings in September. Derek Holland is another rotation stalwart who has just killed Texas down the stretch - his ERA is approaching eight this month. Ian Kinsler and Adrian Beltre, two major pieces that just couldn't slump with Cruz out, have been abysmal. All manager Ron Washington can do is go out there and play his best team, while deflecting speculation that the swoon will cost him his job. Washington told ESPN radio in Dallas:

Warm temperatures brought massive crowds to the festival grounds in Sainte Aga-Pit, Quebec for closing night of Festival Country de Lotbinière featuring James Barker Band and Tim Hicks.
James Barker Band performs at Festival Country de Lotbinière photo by Ron Pettitt
Although I interviewed and featured James Barker Band while they were part of the Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist competition a few years ago this would be my first time actually catching a full performance, and boy they would not disappoint.
Currently touring across Canada from festival to festival in a giant tour bus, that is unmistakable seeing as it has the bands name in giant letters written on its side, these guys are riding a wave of success that has followed them since winning the 2015 Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist showcase which landed them a deal with Universal Music Canada.

They arrived in Quebec hot on the heals of the release their debut EP Game On and boasting a #1 single on Canadian country radio “Chills”. But when they took to the stage they performed like a seasoned group of performers with years of performances under their belt.
The boys kicked off the show with “Throwback” and with that a fuse was lit, the guys rolled through each some on their EP and even dished out Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” which whipped the crowd into even more of a frenzy.

Luckily James slowed things down a tad with a solo ballad performance of Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine”, that gave fans a chance to cool down a bit before they turned things up again with “Chills” and their first single “Lawnchair Lazy”.
Its an exciting time in Canadian country music when it comes to emerging country bands. We’ve got James Barker Band, River Town Saints and Cold Creek County all going strong and showing no signs of slowing down.
Tim Hicks performs at Festival Country de Lotbinière photo by Ron Pettitt
The headliner for the evening needs little introduction, what haven’t we already said about Tim Hicks? He’s a class act, one of the finest in Canadian country music.
When Tim Hicks is on the bill you’re guaranteed an amazing show and the crowd in St. Aga-Pit got just that.
Tim Hicks performs at Festival Country de Lotbinière photo by Ron Pettitt
From “Shake These Walls” all the way through each of his hits including “Here Comes the Thunder”, “Dust and Bone”, “She Don’t Drink Whiskey”. “Slide Over”, “Get By” all the way to, crowd favourite “Stronger Beer”. The show didn’t end before Tim gave the crowd of some new music he wrote with, fellow Canadian, Deric Rutan while in Nashville recently.

As should be expected both Tim Hicks and James Barker Band have busy summers ahead playing festivals all across Canada. Tim Hicks will be returning to Ottawa Bluesfest this July to open for Tom Petty and James Barker Band will visit Montreal in August joining Keith Urban at the Bell Centre.

That’s a wrap for the third annual Festival Country de Lotbinière, do yourself a favour and add this event to your festival bucket list. It’s got an incredible small town feel and has every bit of potential to become one of the top country music festivals in Canada joining events like Cavendish Beach Country Music Festival, Havelock, Boots and Hearts and Dauphin’s Country Music Fest to name a few.
Special thanks to the organizers for inviting us out to cover the event this year and special thanks to the communities of St Aga-Pit and St Apollinaire for their warm hospitality and for putting up with our horrible French all weekend, we’re already looking forward to next summer.
We’ll have full details on the 2018 edition of the event as they come available, also be sure to bookmark www.countrylotbiniere.com

To say that we’ve been anticipating the 2017 Festival Country de Lotbinière for a while would be a massive understatement. We’ve been watching this festival develop from the sidelines and hearing stories about the country crazy crowds in Quebec from our friends the River Town Saints and Cory Marquardt so when the opportunity finally arose for us to actually make the trip east to the village of St. Agapit it felt like forever before this weekend finally arrived.
After a week of hot sunny weather the weekend approached with a forecast of rain and lots of it…we were determined to make it to St. Agapit and make the best of an incredible opportunity to take in a new festival in a province where we have never covered anything before.
By the time we had arrived at our hotel the worst of the rain had passed so we took some time to get settled into our rooms before making our way down to the venue about 7 km away from where we are staying.
The afternoon rain put things a bit behind schedule but the crowds took advantage of the delay to start a parking lot party that would’ve made Lee Brice proud. I walked past a group that was jamming out on their guitars while others danced, it was literally the most country thing I’ve ever seen.

We made it into the venue just before The Washboard Union’s pre-show concert in the VIP tent and had a chance to grab one of the best poutines I’ve ever had.  Going into this weekend’s event Tim Hicks is the only artist on the lineup I have seen live before. I’ve heard amazing things about both The Washboard Union and Alee from team members who have seen them perform in other regions.
As I mentioned earlier, the Washboard Union put on a short pre-show concert for the VIP ticket holders and media and I knew immediately that they were something special. Think ZZ Top but country with about a million more times the energy of BFG and Dusty Hill. The pre-show was a tease and I was looking forward to catching the full show on the big stage.

Edmonton’s own Alee was first up on the main stage and had the task of warming up the crowd that had braved about an hour delay, caused by a lot of rain earlier in the day, and was ready to party. And boy did Alee bring it.
Alee started her set slow, much like a workout, you don’t want to jump right in for fear of hurting something. Ever so gradually she increased the tempo and raised the energy bar just enough to keep the crowd with her.

There’s a certain elegance to what Alee brings to the stage, whether playing the guitar or the piano or just standing in front of the mic without an instrument she just looks like she belongs there.

Alee took the crowd through her best known songs but the moment that stood out for me was when she stepped into the spotlight front and centre stage and absolutely nailed Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine”.
I had the chance to chat with Alee for a few minutes at the end of the night, look forward to a more formal chat this summer at Boots and Hearts…perhaps we’ll even subject her to 20 Questions LIVE.
One thing that continues to blow my mind is how we run into fans, readers and supporters at festivals all over Canada. Even here, right outside of Quebec City, I cross paths with a fan who made sure she came and said hello. Just knowing that people like Donna are tuning in and loving what we do is motivation enough for us to keep doing it.

Continuing the western Canada theme for the night were Vancouver’s own the Washboard Union. A minor mic malfunction didn’t stop this powerhouse group from raising the energy meter really really high.
These guys were one of the most incredible live country acts I’ve ever seen. Their style is classic country with a modern bluegrass twist and a dash of classic folk rock.

Over the course of their, roughly, 90 minute set they cranked out some of their biggest hits including “Head Over Heels”, “Maybe It’s the Moonshine” and, of course, their current single (just released this past week) “Our Time to Shine”. But they didn’t leave it at that, it’s not uncommon for artists to cover each other when performing live so it wasn’t a huge surprise to hear them cover Jon Pardi’s “Dirt on My Boots” or even Dean Brody’s “Bounty”…the surprise came when they covered Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”. I’m a diehard Queen fan, they are, to me, the greatest band to ever walk the earth after the Beatles and to see another artist pay such an incredible tribute to them was incredible.

Washboard Union capped off their set by blowing the crowd away, again, with an incredible cover of yet another one of my favorite bands’ songs…”Seven Bridges Road” by the Eagles. The harmonies in this song have to be bang on for it to work as it’s sung a-capella at the start and boy did these guys ever nail it. The crowd loved every second of it as the energy peaked during the performance.
The Washboard Union is honestly a new personal favourite, many had told me how amazing they were before tonight but now that I’ve witnessed them perform for myself I’m already looking forward to the next opportunity, and so should you.
Sunny skies and warm temperatures return for Saturday at Festival Country de Lotbinière but the lineup is sure to give you “Chills” because it’s Game On to “Shake These Walls” and have a “Hell Raisin’ Good Time”. If you thought the party on Friday night was crazy, something tells me St. Agapit has never seen a party like Tim Hicks and the James Barker Band are bringing into town. If you’re in the area today and looking for a guaranteed good time $30 will get you in the door. For more information visit http://countrylotbiniere.com
