They are something worse*. (addition for clarification: compared to what you think of when you accuse someone of being a nazi/fascist nowadays). They are no conviction no lean people, Shiv included. Who do not care whether the next US president gets his ideas from Hitler, so long as the president is in their pocket.

they will fuck anyone and quite literally everyone for their own selfish interest.

Roman pushing Mencken win because Mencken favours Roman and has spoken to him nicely and told him they're going to go far. So Roman steps onto the floor and pushes the narrative, pushes them to call. (also funny the "we're gonna go far" thing esp compared to roman x gerri implosion).

Kendall who for a few second considers how this shit might affect his daughter (a far cry from caring about people in general but hey). That is until his ego is bruised by Shiv's scheming and he decides to agree with Roman... Pathetic, and tragic. Also a bad father, but overall yeah not a good person really. Just chasing his own validation/interest.

And Shiv. Shivy shiv shiv. Who has always been on her high horse because she was the one working for a left leaning politician. She was the one unmarred by ATN and all these duplicitous deals that happen. Until she wasn't. Until Logan dragged her into the narrative and then kicked her a bit just to test her. Until she was consciously part of the abuse cycle bcs up until then she was at least in her opinion much better than her brothers. Until she was making lawsuits and witnesses go away. Shiv who has always cared about people until they are NRPI, right? And Shiv who when given the chance to find common ground between Jimenez and the Roy bros throws it into trash because I guess she knows... she knows that if she calls Nate up she might be able to get something done.

So, she doesn't. She pretends to call and lies to her brothers because when weighing her own benefit (scheme w/ Matsson) against the well-being of the entire country (not having a nazified douche for president) - Shiv Roy chooses her own self-interest. She appeals to the brothers that they need to call for Jimenez, without trying to broker a deal which she now knows might be a no-go for them. But she doesn't sacrifice her self-interest to get them there. She doesn't talk to Nate or Jimenez, or tell them valid reasons why they should probably block the trade (general behaviour, dodgy numbers etc etc).

And this is why ALL of them are worse than just saying "oh my fave turned out to be a nazi"... nah they didn't. They are worse bcs they're flighty as fuck, trying to sit on the highest nicest chair, eat their cake, and benefit while shit hits the fan.

And they're still doing it because of a man who has died and has never listened to what either of them was saying, or wanted. They're still trying to validate themselves by proving to Logan that they're the best one. But Logan is dead, and wouldn't have approved anyway.

What use does roman even provide outside of ATN and A Good Time? Mencken might give in a bit to his emotions every now and again but, when push comes to shove, he'd probably be willing to throw Roman out should he prove to be a liability somehow. It's just how capitalism is and by extension, how fascism is. Roman can't get what he wants if people keep treating all of this like they're transactions and their relationship is founded on one. Besides, Mencken can only keep up the performance so long until the cracks start to show because unlike Logan, he can't just be diefied. He's ultimately a human being who can't actually be the Ideal Father in Roman's view, and Roman won't give him the same treatment he does his father because the circimstances of their relationship are fundamentally different.

succession s4 e7 recap: 🍆🍆🇺🇸

this week's recap is nothing short of a trauma dump from this here political operative.

never in my life did i think i would relate to nate, but there truly is nothing scarier than election eve....

we start the episode off the disguisting brothers, preparing for a long night at ATN.

tom has seemingly still not slept and greggory peggory is still recovering from his night on the town with one lukas mattson.

a few levels up, team shiv and team roman are also gearing up for a long night.

other than the distinct lack of booze, i'd say the vibes are pretty realistic.

roman with mencken was always my least favorite version of roman. this episode is no exception.

in fact, i think i'm demonstratively anti-roman in this episode.

and gerri is nowhere to be seen:((

shiv is worried about mattson letting greg in on their little plans.

as she should. rule number 1: don't talk to greg.

rava has to deal with kendall yet again.

this woman is a saint. someone save her.

ken is still on his "everything i do, i do for my children"-shit. you know, everything except ensure that a fascist doesn't make it to the white house.

honestly, this episode is really, very good.

i never wanna watch it again.

mencken bonds with roman over the fact that they both hate the word 'narrative'.

he is prepared to lose and for a millisecond i was hopeful.

this is the right wing politics that i know. 10/10 great representation.

basically, there's a fire in wisconsin and ballots have been lost. historically, those votes have been overwhelmingly democrat, but roman wants them to call wisconsin for mencken, disregarding the burnt up ballots altogether.

he sends his talking points to ravenhead, who goes on an on-air rant, and the rest of the sibs take to the floor at ATN as well, much to greg's dismay.

shiv tries to threaten greg so that he doesn't tell her brothers about her plans with mattson.

as much as i love shiv threatening to pull greg's organs out his asshole, it isn't very effective.

there's an incident with wasabi.

i question a lot of decisions made in this episode, but perhaps most curious of all is the choice of lemon flavored la croix??????

i would laugh more at this if i wasn't so ridden with anxiety.

connor lands an embassadorship in the new mencken administration.

willa is skeptical of the fascism etc but still....

connor makes a speech. i love it when he does that.

we get a brief moment with the old guard, gerri not included.

we get basically no karl:/

instead we get roman being an asshole scene after scene after scene.

kendall is torn between team shiv and team roman, presumably because he can't decide what outcome will be most helpful to his own ambitions.

oh and there's the whole "my daughter might be in danger if mencken wins", but that seems to be secondary.

because he was vulnerable with shiv for a minute, he feels even more betrayed when he learns about her plans with mattson.

the hugging era is truly a thing of the past.

i wish i had more jokes, but honestly this episode just made me very, very sad.

roman, ken and tom decide to call the election for mencken, despite shiv's desperate attempts.

and i just have to say, i know shiv isn't altruistic. i know she thinks a jimenez win will benefit her more than mencken will. i knooooow.

it's still very sad.

they call it for mencken.

me every single election night.

roman is very much in the camp of nothing fucking matters, and i guess he is right in a way.

it won't really matter to him or kendall.

that being said, i don't think he's a very reliable partner for them.

in the end, mencken will do what is good for mencken. the same goes for roman.

shiv makes a final rallying cry to mattson, but it somehow feels hollow to me.

this shiv girlie is starting to lose hope.

anyway, rava doesn't want ken to come over to see the kids because he prioritized his own project of becoming his dad over keeping them safe.

i guess i agree with him that the poison does, perhaps, drip down.

You've told us something that's probably never gonna happen. Could you give us an example of something that you think could happen with Roman and the Mencken storyline that would work for you? I love speculative scenarios.

At this late date (*shakes fist at Jesse*), if it were up to me, we'd get a scene between Roman and Mencken at the end of 4x07 to take us into 4x08. Regardless of whether their sexual relationship was revealed to the other siblings tonight or not, it's necessary for the audience to at least have a sense of how it works and what Roman is feeling in regards to Mencken so that his actions in 4x08 have that context. Shiv smiled at the end of 4x05, Kendall smiled at the end of 4x06 - I'd have Roman smiling in bed with Mencken at the end of 4x07 (maybe that scene would start with them...finishing up, and then Mencken turning over to sleep. Then Roman would smile - it would be a callback to Tern Haven when he woke up next to Tabitha looking troubled).

After that, I'd want to see Kendall/Shiv/Connor find out about Roman and Mencken in 4x08 when they fight over the election results. And I'd want it to be messy - you know Shiv can sling some homophobic insults when her temper is up (not the f-slur but things consistent with the homophobia she's shown all season). And then...idk, honestly.

A lot of the time when Roman fucks up, his phone is involved. Naomi in S2, dick pic in S3, text from Logan this season. So it seems likely that something from his phone might be used to expose how he allowed Mencken access to ATN broadcasts (and Joy might back that up by letting people know she got fired for speaking out against Mencken). Either way, their relationship isn't surviving Mencken losing the election. So, I guess that's where it would end.

To me, this is still plausible, but certainly not likely. Sadly, I feel the show has probably elected to pretend there was zero sexual tension between them ever and just go with Roman's motivation to steal the election for Mencken being a combination of Logan's death and Kendall winning big by telling a big lie in 4x06. Roman may think that if he lies big as well, there will be no consequences and he'll be able the secure his position by having an open line to the president.
