Arches of Fantasy & Cinderella Castle by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: The Rokinon 12mm 2.8 fisheye lens I use is the cheapest lens I own, but also probably the most fun to shoot with. The image quality is good (but not quite great) paired with the Z7. My biggest complaint I suppose is that the front element tends to come loose and then the images are out of focus. If you aren’t pixel peeping, you may not notice the shots aren’t tack sharp. I had this happen on a few different occasions during the week. But again, for a $375 lens purchase I can overlook these shortcomings for what it does offer. Most exciting of all is the ability to get compositions like this one that just don’t work as well with a regular wide-angle lens.

Fantasyland in Motion by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: Having shot so much around Walt Disney World it’s refreshing when the weather offers something new you can capitalize on. In this case, fast moving clouds always look really cool with a long exposure. To boot they were just thin enough to allow some stars to shine through.

The Arch Of Time par William McIntosh Via Flickr : OK…so technically I was still getting over the flu and bronchitis and Eric was still dealing with a kidney stone, but there was a new moon and both of us had been stuck at home for two weeks…and our doctors didn’t really SAY we couldn’t pull an all nighter while shooting in 20 degree temps….so...of course... off we went. Last Friday, we headed out around noon to beat the traffic and even though we got stuck in the holiday malaise and had to fight our way out of the Cajon Pass, we pulled into Lone Pine around 4 PM and grabbed some early dinner at Carl’s Jr while we strategized. It was decided that we should bail on the Alabama Hills as it would most likely be a zoo on a holiday weekend and head instead to the White Mountains. I was kicking myself at this point for not remembering that we would be shooting above 9000 feet and while I remembered the big jacket, I left the warm socks, gloves and cap at home. We made it up to Shulman Grove just before sunset and had an epic view of the snow capped Sierras across the valley as the beams of the sun died away. After scouting our favorite tree to see when we could expect the Milky Way, we thought we should explore a bit more. We were bummed to see that the road to Patriarch Grove was closed due to “Heavy Snow” but we were in the FJ and figured the park rangers were just being overly cautious. So….we MAY have driven around a barricade or two. After driving in about 2 miles or so, we could see very clearly that the rangers weren’t exaggerating with their warning. The drifts were now at least 5 feet high and what wasn’t covered in snow was buried in mud. Not wanting to be the idiot who drove past all the warning signs only to get stuck, I shifted into 4 wheel drive and cautiously made my way back to Shulman Grove. As a side note, it you are planning to shoot the Patriarch grove this Summer, it might be a bit of a wait as there was a TON of snow up there only after 2 miles in. And it’s almost June! One of my main goals in shooting in the white mountains on this trip was to get the full arch of the Milky Way above a Bristilecone pine. Many of the trees in this area are over 3000 years old. I was freezing my butt off as we began shooting, and it steadily got colder as the night wore on. Eric and I shot for around an hour or so before we saw some headlights. About 15 minutes later we were joined by Mike Kukucska who was a fellow landscape photographer from Ontario, Canada. Mike was also into low level lighting and he and Mike began to experiment while trying to get the right glow on the tree we were shooting. We shot until almost 2 AM and then it was time for the long drive home. I love the juxtaposition in this particular shot as this tree, which has been alive for most of recorded human history, is set against the arch of the Milky Way, which has been glowing for billions of years. The ancient against the eternal. In terms of settings, I took this shot with the Rokinon 12mm 2.8 fisheye which has been my go-to lens on many of my recent Milky Way trips. Single exposure, F2.8, ISO 3200 at 25 seconds.

Wirecutter's best deals: Save $250 on a Vizio Soundbar with Dolby Atmos
Tumblr media
This post was done in partnership with Wirecutter. When readers choose to buy Wirecutter's independently chosen editorial picks, it may earn affiliate commissions that support its work. Read Wirecutter's continuously updated list of deals here.
Vizio SB46514-F6 Soundbar
Tumblr media
Street price: $950; deal price: $700
Down to $700 from a street price of around $950, this is a new low that we expect to see more regularly on this soundbar. This new top pick includes built in Bluetooth and Chromecast for music streaming, as well as a connection panel with every type of input you could possibly need.
The Vizio SB46514-F6 Soundbar is the top pick in our guide to the best soundbar. Wirecutter Editor Adrienne Maxwell wrote, "The Vizio SB46514-F6 is a full-featured soundbar that comes with everything you need to create a 360-degree sound experience. While many other high-performance soundbars require you to pay more to add a subwoofer or rear speakers, Vizio includes a wireless 10-inch subwoofer and wired rear speakers, as well as four built-in up-firing Atmos speakers to produce a fully enveloping soundstage."
Rokinon 12mm F2.0 NCS CS Ultra Wide Angle Lens for Fuji X Mount
Tumblr media
Street price: $300; deal price: $250
Matching the previous all-time low we saw for this pick, this lens is down to $250 from $300. This deal price, though growing increasingly common, is a solid drop if you're in the market for a budget wide lens.
As the budget pick in our guide to the first Fujifilm lenses you should buy, we like the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 NCS CS as an option over $100 less than our other picks. Amadou Diallo wrote, "This lens's 18mm-equivalent focal length is wider than our main pick, the Fujifilm 14mm f/2.8, and with a fast f/2.0 aperture it lets in twice as much light as well. You have to focus this lens manually; there's no electronic autofocus communication between it and the camera."
Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS, 44mm)
Tumblr media
Street price: $420; deal price: $380
Down to $380, this isn't the lowest we've seen on our top Apple watch pick, but it matches previous deals we've posted before. Praised for its iOS integration, the Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS, 44mm) offers the best combination of style and additional features of any smartwatch for any platform.
The Series 4 Apple Watch is the top pick in our Apple Watch guide. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Nick Guy and Dan Frakes wrote, "It's the first redesign since the device launched, and its bigger screen is a major improvement that you'll notice no matter what you use your watch for—it's a big enough difference that it's worth paying the premium. A faster processor, more-reliable Siri, a new Digital Crown, and better heart-rate and health-tracking features only sweeten the deal. Of all the smartwatches we've tested—for both iPhone and Android—the Apple Watch Series 4 offers the best overall package."
Jabra Elite 85h
Tumblr media
Street price: $300; deal price: $250
This drop to $250 on the Jabra Elite 85h is only $13 more than the short-lived, all-time low we saw during Prime Day. Along with their great sound and great design, these headphones have an intuitive set up and easily accessible controls, making them a great choice if you're in the market for Bluetooth headphones.
The Jabra Elite 85h is the top pick in our guide to the best Bluetooth wireless headphones. Wirecutter Senior Staff Writer Lauren Dragan wrote, "Whereas other Bluetooth headphones can have confusing and fiddly buttons that often cause you to trigger the wrong task, the Elite 85h has straightforward controls and a painless pairing process across all device platforms. This pair works with the Amazon, Apple, and Google digital assistants, too. The sound quality is great for both music and phone calls, the headphones fit comfortably, and the set features a 36-hour battery life. Plus, you get passable noise cancellation and a two-year warranty against rain damage. Overall, the Jabra Elite 85h headphones embody ease of use, and they're just plain enjoyable to pick up and wear."
Because great deals don't just happen on Thursday, sign up for our daily deals email and we'll send you the best deals we find every weekday. Also, deals change all the time, and some of these may have expired. To see an updated list of current deals, please go here.

To Dump Would Be An Awfully Big Adventure by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: Here’s another shot with the Rokinon 12mm fisheye. I like how it curves the frame just a bit here along with the lights in the upper left corner. I ended up doing a slight crop removing some space from the right and the bottom that made it just right. Enjoy.

Circadian Rhythms of the Tree of Life by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: This trip, the wife and I decided to do something we haven’t done in a very long time, spend an entire day at Animal Kingdom. It’s a park we have historically spent very little time in and as a result I have far fewer photos of it than any of the other parks despite it offering tons of great photo opportunities. While my wife decided to sit down and rest for a while I opted to pop my Rokinon 12mm fisheye on and go wander around the Tree of Life. With the sun beginning to set the leaves on the tree really popped with the golden light. Combined with a bit of golden light and a long exposure to smooth out the water from the waterfall makes for an exciting frame. Enjoy! Arc of the Galaxy by snowpeak Galaxies are not curved, as ours appears to be in this image; they are more or less flat or rounded discs in space. The curved appearance results from perspective and other distortions created by the compression from a wide-angle lens. Nevertheless, some might consider it an intriguing view, especially with the juxtaposition of a foreground taken with a much less extreme wide angle lens. The stars were photographed a couple of weeks ago during darkness of a new moon using a Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 fisheye lens, taken a few hours after the milky way rose above the eastern horizon. I took a stack of 20 images with my Nikon D800E, each a 30 second exposure at ISO 3200 and with the lens wide open. I used StarryLandscapeStacker to align and stack the frames and apply median filtering to reduce image noise. I made the foreground image long ago with a Nikon D90. It was taken during the post-sunset blue hour, providing soft lighting. Both images were shot in the Bisti Wilderness of northern New Mexico. I can’t help but note that our galaxy has maybe 100 billion stars, and there are perhaps 500 billion galaxies in the visible part of the universe. Yet one can make a case that, if the universe is finite, though mind-bogglingly large, this scene might well be unique. https://flic.kr/p/26zRu9Q

Wayne Pinkston at Double Arch — REPOST: @wayne_pinkston from http://ift.tt/1WIhwba chosen by @tracyleephotos --- #milkywaychasers to be featured or post on http://ift.tt/1WIhwba. Tag a friend who might enjoy this Milky Way image and journey! --- From Wayne about this image: --- PANO - Fisheye panorama Rokinon 12 mm fisheye lens, f 2.8, ISO 10,000, 30 sec., 10 images This image was 2 years in the planning. In 2014 I was just starting night photography and on a whim I tried to get a panorama of the entire inside of Double Arch, including the 2 arches as well as the roof opening, with a Sigma 15 mm fisheye lens. It worked out OK but I was just barely including the whole roof opening. Not quite wide enough to be satisfactory. I wanted to return with an even wider lens and try to do better. I went in 2015, but was unsuccessful. I tried in 2016 with the Rokinon 12 mm fisheye and this is what I got. The lens was just right to cover the area in a panorama, but I ended up with distortion I could not fully correct. Here is what I learned: The distortion was greater with the 12mm fisheye than the 15 mm fisheye (not surprising, lol). The increased distortion makes it absolutely critical where you stand. This is hard to judge until you stitch the images together. I was better centered on my first attempt in 2014 (by accident). On this image I needed to be standing more to my right to balance out the 2 arches. Maybe I will try again in 2017 for attempt no.3. :-) This lighting is Low Level Lighting (please see lowlevellighting.org) done with multiple dimmable LED light Panels with warming filters. I believe I used 4 to get all the interior dimly lit. This was the hardest light setup I have encountered thus far, with the setup and light adjustments taking about 1.5 hours. There was a lot of climbing up and down. It was difficult to photography well over 1/2 of the cavernous interior of the arch, get somewhat uniform lighting, and still hide the lights (behind boulders).
