Like most of the unexpected crap life throws at him, the first swipe goes straight for his head and comes out of someone concocting something so unbelievably stupid it’s a miracle they’ve survived so long.

Mikasa, standing in his doorway with her fist over her heart like her brain isn’t leaking out from her ears, isn’t usually that stupid anymore.

His leg twinges.

Levi, since she doesn’t look any closer to talking sense, asks the question.

“Did you land on your head recently?”

Mikasa’s fist continues to grind into her rib cage. “Please,” she repeats, tact dropped off in whatever ditch she tripped through to come up with this, “marry me.”

She’s a night off from playing ambassador with Hizuru. She has duties she still considers it honorable to care about. She should be packing. He should be drilling Historia one more time about how badly they needed to make nice with people who see them as a garbage island hosting buried treasure and Mikasa.

With a few more names on the list, that’s what Levi would call Paradis. On a good day. But it’s his garbage island.

“Why?” sounds like a better response than, “Sure.”

They aren’t far enough apart. It’s a stupid idea from a stupid kid, and they’ve both lived through enough of those. Their luck should be running out any day now. Tempting it further isn’t their job.

Thinking about everything Mikasa does as a ‘they’ problem isn’t his job either. More of a prolonged mistake he’s stopped resisting. As far as he can tell, Mikasa never bothered with that step.

“No matter what happens,” Mikasa says, “I want to stay an Ackerman. Paradis is my home. You–everyone here is my family. I don’t want to leave with that open for question.”

It’s a stupid solution to a problem Levi can feel resonating. “No one’s making you go.”

“I need to,” she says. She sounds like an adult. The force of nature she’s grown into and he’s spent too much time watching.

She’s still offering up her heart. “But I’m coming back.”

Levi crosses his arms and finds a chair to lean against. “You can make that happen without adding complicated shit in at the last second,” he says.

For the first time since knocking on his door, Mikasa’s eyes drop from him. “It’s not complicated.“

He feels old. She’s the only one he detests it around. It comes from being too good at dragging his feelings out to start. “Lifelong commitments always are.”

“No,” Mikasa says, exemplary in the salute that used to mean an early death. “They’re a yes or no. There is nothing less complicated.” She offers him another moment that he doesn’t take before she continues. “And you haven’t said no yet.”

Levi snorts and walks up to her, tossing her hand out of the salute. Her hand trails next to his, not quite breaking the brief, jolting connection. “I haven’t said yes, either.” He’s close enough to watch the cords in her neck raise her collar. Close enough to feel her reeling him in.

“You make it back,” he says, “and we’ll talk.” Stupid oaths being the theme of the night. “Until then, don’t think a scrap of paper could ever match what you mean to this place. You’re ours. One boat ride can’t touch that.”

Her hand flails in the air around his, and he finds a pocket to shove it in before any more mistakes happen.

“Go rest.”

He can feel her eyes on him like a cloud full of rain, but finally, she nods and steps back. His hand twitches in his pocket. He keeps it there as she turns around.

She stops, though.

“I will be back,” she says, back to him.

It sounds like she’s threatening him.

That’s more his speed than the marriage crap.

“Good.”

It’s not an easy question for a multishipper, but if I consider the biggest amount of fanfiction I read, seek, storage, and write: Darcy and Elizabeth and as you can easily tell: Rivamika.

Yes, most of them… Laury and Jo, Barney and Robin (I will ignore that last chapter for the rest of my life), Hei and Misaki, Dexter and Lumen, Kalinda and Cari, Arizona and Cally, Casilda and Emilio, Cameron and House… except for Jo and Laury, I’m only counting tv series; my books have the ability to break my heart in too many pieces (just thinking of Camila and Cara de Ángel hurts so f much).
