-------------------------------------------------
Feat: Chifuyu Matsuno x F.Reader!
A/n: Got the idea from @introvert--weeb and I had to do one for this beautiful boy <3
------------------------------------------------------
Chifuyu Matsuno
“Maybe I got here way too early”the blonde wondered as he looked around the half empty entrance of the newly opened aquarium. You had promised to go with Chifuyu to the aquarium on Saturday since that was the only day Chifuyu was free and you promised to make time out of your schedule for him
He stood there, playing with the hem of his hoodie as he restlessly looked at his phone every few seconds to see if you had sent something
‘Did you forget that it was today?’ or ‘Did you get attacked by another gang?’his face turned pale, mind filling up with only the worst possible scenarios. He cursed himself for not asking to pick you up from your house. Not planning on wasting anymore time,he turned and headed towards his bike
“Wait! Chifuyu! Where are you going?”a familiar voice asked as her hand gripped his wrist in an attempt to stop him.The blonde whipped his head in the girls direction, pink dusting his cheeks as she smiled brightly at him
“What’s the hurry, partner?”she asked,giggling at him
’Partner’.That was the name he had given her when she joined Toman and now it was the one name that got him the most flustered. At some point Chifuyu had realized that he had fallen for her, pointed out to him by Takemichi of course.Sure he read a lot of Shoujo mangas but experiencing it was a completely different thing. Was it the way she’d always make time for him? or the way she’d walk back home from school only with him?.He wasn’t sure when it started. Was it when he first saw her hanging out with Baji at school?Or was it when he met her at a Toman meeting, standing beside Baji of course. He wondered if you two had been dating since you two were inseparable and even questioned the male only to get a disgusted reply as a response
“Ew! There’s no way I’d date my own cousin!”he hissed as the blonde nodded in agreement
Ever since that day he had attempted to talk to you but never really found the right time to approach you, until one day of course
Flashback starts
“Ah! I like that manga too!”you yelled, pointing to the book in his hands as the male looked at you wide eyed
“You like it too?!”he squealed as you nodded your head vigorously
“I love how he’s always there for her and how he takes care of her so well”you admitted, eyes sparking as you spoke about the love interest of the heroine
“Right? They’re perfect for eachother!”he excitedly replied back
“Wait-Haven’t I seen you somewhere?”she questioned, hand gripping her chin as she tried to remember where
“You mean in our school and the toman meetings?”he teased as the girls cheeks turned pink
“Oh please,I knew that”she lied as she took a seat beside the male.He giggled at her, extending a hand out to her
“The name’s Chifuyu Matsuno,Nice to meet you partner”he said, waiting for her to shake his hand
“Partner?like friends?I like that!”she excitedly stated,shaking the males hand
“My names (F/n) (L/n),Nice to meet you partner”she grinned widely as the male only grinned back in response
Flashback Ends
At that time, the word ‘partner’ had meant something different to him.It was more like a buddy but now to Chifuyu it was definitely a romantic term. ’A lover’ would fit that perfectly
“You took so long that the next olympics started”Chifuyu whined as the girl only looked at him in disbelief
“I didn not! You got here way to early”she stated as the boy only looked elsewhere, knowing very well that what she said was true
“I wanted to look good today and that’s what I get?”she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.Chifuyus eyes scanned the girls attire, cheeks getting warmer as he realized something
You hated skirts so much. The only reason you’d wear it was because you were forced to and didn’t want to do anything that would cause any problems to you or your family and here you were, dressed in a beautiful white blouse whose front had a ruffled collar. That was paired with a maroon pleated skirt that reached your knee. The shoes consisted of a pair of navy blue pumps
“Why do you look like you’re wearing a different version of our school uniform?”he teased as the girl looked at him in disbelief.Of course it was a lie.He couldn't take his eyes off of her. He’d only seen her in the school uniform and hoodies at home so seeing her like this drove him insane
“I’ll have you know that HIna and Emma helped me pick this out”she said, visibly upset by his comment
“I’m kidding,It looks beautiful on you”he admitted, now looking straight into the girls eyes.she flinched and looked away
“A-Ah well, thank you”she said taking a step away from the male
“Shall we head in?”he asked, offering a hand to the girl. She nodded excitedly before holding his hand.It was a thing that they did.Holding hands was normal to them but it just felt different today
“Let’s go see the sharks first!”she demanded as the boy eagerly nodded, the two running to see the sharks
“Woah! That looks like Baji doesn’t it?”she asked, laughing as the shark only came closer to the glass, displaying its sharp teeth to the two
“Woah! I’ve gotta take a photo and send it to him”he hurriedly fished out his phone from his pocket and snapped a quick photo of the shark before looking at you.You had a wide grin spread across your face as you looked at the shark. His heart couldn’t take it anymore. He quickly snapped a photo of you, mentally telling himself to set it as his lock screen after he got back home
“Let’s go see the dolphins now!”she exclaimed running to where the dolphins were, leaving the boy behind
“(F/n)! Wait for me!”he called out as he chased the girl only to find out that she got lost in the crowd
“What the-Where did all these people come from?”he mumbled as he pushed through a group of people only to find her standing near a souvenir shop
“I told you not to run”he whined as the girl didn’t reply. Her eyes were glued to a penguin plushie. It was a bit chubby and had a tiny bow around its neck but the most noticeable feature was its blue eyes
“You like it?”Chifuyu questioned as the girl nodded, eyes not leaving the plushie
“How much is it old man?”he questioned pulling out his wallet
“Y-you really don’t have to,I don’t think my parents would want me spending money on something this silly”she assured as she gave him her usual smile
“It’ll be 600¥”he stated
“That’s way too costly”he argued as the old man only raised a brow at him
“I’ll give it to you for free if you kiss her”he stated,a smile spreading across his lips
“W-What the hell are you saying?”Chifuyu asked, face turning red as he processed what the old man told him
“Goodbye then”he blankly said before getting back to reading the newspaper
“Chifuyu,let’s go shall we?”
“No! You really liked it so”he started before gently grabbing your shoulders to face him
“A-A kiss is nothing right?”he asked, face beet red from embarrassment.Your face mirrored his as the male leaned in,only a few centimeters away before something hit Chifuyu on the face.He quickly grabbed the plushie before looking back at the old man
“You really think I’d ask you to do that?Youngsters these days are so eager to kiss”he laughed as Chifuyu looked at the man in embarrassment ,bowing his head down to apologize to him
“Take good care of her”the old man grinned as Chifuyu nodde before handing you the plushie. You smiled at the male, unable to look him in the eye after the incident that took place
“Let’s go see the penguins last okay?”he suggested as you nodded, now holding his hand so you wouldn’t get lost
After almost an hour you two finally made your way to where the penguins were. The whole time you were unable to make eye contact with him.Your heart was racing every time he spoke or every time he held your hand.you really couldn’t take it anymore and just wanted to curl up into a ball from embarrassment
“We’re here!”he excitedly announced as you snapped out of your thoughts ,looking at the adorable penguins swimming around.Completely forgetting about what you were troubled about, you ran to the glass and excitedly looked at the penguins, eyes sparking
“They’re so adorable Chifuyu!”you exclaimed
“I can’t take it anymore”you heard him mumble.you turned to face the male only to see his lips inches away from yours. You panicked and placed the plushie that was in your hand between the two of you.His eyes shot open as he met (e/c) eyes, face flushed in a deep shade of red
“I-I uh-”you stuttered.Chifuyu lowered the plush toy from his lips and looked at you for a split second before his hands made its way to your cheeks, cupping them as he placed his lips on yours. The plushie fell from your hand to the floor as your eyes widened slightly before closing to enjoy the kiss
He pulled back, cheeks flushed as his hand still cupped your cheeks
“I’m obviously gonna say that you’re the cutest thing to see at the aquarium”he stated as you blushed
“S-Since when have you liked me?”you asked,Confused as to when it happened
“Beats me,I guess i realized it on the day we went for the festival”he sheepishly stated ,eyes still glued to yours
“I-I wanted to confess first though”you pouted as the male giggled
“I’d say that this is better than any other shoujo manga I’ve read”
“How did i ever fall for you I wonder”you said,as you chuckled at his words
“Don’t know but would you still like to be my partner?”

Horikoshi’s writing of Shouto and the problems I have with it
If you’re a fan of the way Shouto’s treated in the manga, don’t read, we’ll end up disagreeing on everything and you’ll probably end up offended lol. Because I’m not (satisfied, that is).
This post is spoiler-heavy for anime onlys, and for manga readers not up to date with the last arc (and last chapter for that matter, which is 301).
So, about Shouto and how he’s handled, along with ‘his’ story.
I don’t get how Horikoshi, whose writing I respect immensely, managed to depict such an incredible and alluring storyline with the Todoroki family, with some of the most complex character writing I’ve seen, but fumbled the one character he had to actually focus on.
Literally more than half the people in the Todoroki storyline are more interesting and more developed than Shouto at this point. Hawks, Endeavour, Dabi, Rei… a good bunch of fans are way more invested in their story than his, and I am too. It’s really sad, because if you asked me two years ago Shouto would have probably been one of my favorite character. But he was completely shafted, given no internal conflict, and at this point, I have the same interest in him as I do for Fuyumi and Natsuo, which basically means his only interesting feature to me is that he’s Endeavour’s child (oh, and he does have a cool design, but that can only get you so far).
Deku and Katsuki are more popular than him by a landslide compared to before if we believe the Japanese popularity polls, because Hori actually bothers to give them focus, conflict, and cool moments (even though, sometimes I feel like Horikoshi forgets Deku’s his main character lol). It’s a testament to how great Shouto was and how much potential had that he’s still that popular despite everything. Because, let’s be real, Endeavour and Dabi have taken the focus because they have much more emotional energy, while Shouto is just stuck in the crossfire, as a punching ball and stress relief (and eventually as the person who’ll save him I guess) for Touya (see how he was relegated to first aid during the big fight against Tomura? how he did absolutely nothing against Touya who was burning him alive? And how Touya had no interest in Shouto outside of the fact he was Endeavour’s son? Story of the way Hori treats him). He has no particular interesting insight to give on the Todoroki family either as he was too small to remember the important events, so even on this point we can’t count on Horikoshi to write something for him, everything comes from Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Rei. He's really had one great moment in S2 and S3 and that’s it. The way Horikoshi struggles to give him a personality doesn’t help either (he admitted some time ago he was hard to write sometimes, and… yeah, I can see that).  I’m really trying to like his character but the manga gives us nothing, and keeps developing Endeavour, Dabi, and Hawks, which is great (I really love all three of them) but makes no sense given who’s supposed to be the main focus.
In the Endeavour agency arc, Endeavour’s thoughts and struggles were heavily touched upon, and Bakugou and Deku are in sync for 90% of it while Shouto’s just… there. as fodder for Endeavour, and maybe as a link between Endeavour and Bakugou/Deku too. He’s supposed to be a part of both these storylines, but instead, he just ends up as a way for them to overlap. we don't even take a peek in his thoughts, even though it's supposed to be an arc about the Todorokis!
I say all this as someone who eagerly waited for the day Horikoshi would portray Shouto, Katsuki, and Deku as a trio, but yeah, Shouto feels more like a third wheel than anything. if he wanted to establish them that way, he should have done it right after the sports festival arc, but after this arc, they have no scene together, and the focus shifted on Deku and Katsuki. Too little too late I guess.
To come back to the Todoroki storyline, I feel like Horikoshi simply woke up one day and decided Endeavour was more interesting to write lmao. at this point, it’s more Endeavour’s storyline than Shouto’s, even though Shouto’s supposedly one of the main characters. it has come to a point where, even though I know it ought to focus on Shouto because he’s (at least he should be) the main focus of this particular storyline, I’m hoping it won’t, because that’s just the least interesting aspect of this whole thing.
I’d say even Ochako’s treated better by the story, because at least Horikoshi tries to challenge her views and beliefs (even though for now it’s not very conclusive), while Shouto’s inner growth hasn't been put into question in how many chapters?
(btw, by inner growth, I’m not talking about his problem with his fire side, because that’s just been rinse and repeat for more than 200 chapters. I mean, srsly it’s been already 3 times since this problem has caused him to lose/fail... and it's not even satisfying like Katsuki or Deku (except for the first time in the sport festival, because that was when his character was still handled very well by Horikoshi). Why? Simply because when he loses, the stakes aren’t high, it’s all training or exams, so he’s just like, "oh, I have to maybe learn how to deal with it!", but there’s no real pressure he’s under. It’s not like Deku, who, if he does not progress, will break all his bones, and who failed to rescue Katsuki because of his broken arms (=and had a mental breakdown immediately afterwards and blamed himself). It’s not like Katsuki either, because Katsuki has a personality that makes low stakes feel like high stakes, which isn’t the case for Shouto. just compare Shouto's reaction when he loses because of his setbacks to Katsuki's reaction when he lost to Deku the first time (mental breakdown), or when Katsuki failed the provisional license exam (another mental breakdown, not caused just by his failing, but yeah). And anything else about Shouto's inner growth is tied to his reaction to Endeavour’s arc, which isn’t a flaw, and 100% depends on the way Endeavour acts. Apart from this, he has 0 internal conflict).
Sorry, I’ve gone off on a tangent lol.
To get back to the point I was making, and to further develop my analogy with Ochako, let’s look at their relationship with Deku, because there’s a major difference there, which is clearly in favor of Ochako.  Deku has a big impact on Ochako, yes, but the reverse is also true. People complain she’s all about him (which, yeah, probably), but at least, she made a big impact on him too. She was the main reason ‘Deku' became his hero name. Shouto and Deku have a nice friendship, and Deku clearly considers him one of his best friends. but... it’s all one-sided in terms of impact, I can’t think of a single thing Shouto has done who changed/motivated Deku, while Deku literally changed his life. Because of this, he’s not one of the people who’s intrinsically tied to Dekus character development, because he’s not Ochako, Inko, Katsuki or All Might (and probably soon Tomura).
His writing feels so fast compared to the others too. Shigaraki / Deku and Toga / Ochako have been paralleled for ages, have had a conversation at least once, and have had deep encounters early on. Nonetheless, both Deku and Ochako are just coming to terms with the fact these villains aren’t so different from them. However, Shouto’s only interaction with Dabi is a ten second eye contact when Dabi kidnapped Katsuki. Dabi had more interactions with Endeavour for fuck's sake! Shouto then learns Dabi’s Touya, and speed runs the development of Ochako and Deku. He doesn’t even need 10 chapters to process they’re ’the same'. Where were all the reflection and doubts? Okay, it’s his brother, so the parallels are easier, but still, it shows Horikoshi doesn’t allow Shouto to have that much introspection, and I feel it’s because Horikoshi just doesn’t care that much. Even worse! Horikoshi introduces another hero parallel to Dabi in the character of Hawks. A parallel much more interesting and compelling, because it parallels Dabi MUCH BETTER. They’re opposites in every ways (particularly in regards to their relationship with Endeavor), and know each other. Touya and Shouto don’t even seem to have spoken to each other...
And so, the only thing that still was interesting and that Horikoshi still bothered to develop was Shouto’s relationship with Endeavour, but in the end, even that was overshadowed by the much more complex, fucked up, and challenging relationships of Endeavour and Touya (and Endeavour and Hawks) as seen in 301 and before. Clearly the one Dabi’s fixated on is Endeavour.
one last thing: Shouto's stuck in a weird loop where Horikoshi kind of makes him comes close of the Bakugou and Deku duo, and then when we start to think they’re an actual trio, he does everything in his power to make it very clear how that’s NOT where he belongs either, since OFA/All Might/Deku/Katsuki is another storyline. It’s as if Horikoshi doesn’t want him here (see: how he decided the ‘win all might’ scene didn’t have to include him), but puts him there sometimes anyway. It’s probably because Shouto’s so popular, which, yeah, would be fine, if he could stick to it!
His supposed admiration for All Might (I feel like everybody forgets it's a part of his character, and I don't blame them) is brought up once every blue moon, which compared to Deku and Katsuki, is just ridiculous. And, once again, All Might has a much deeper and more interesting relationship with Endeavour than with Shouto. At this point, I don’t even know what Hori could do to make me want to read about him. I much prefer the dynamic of Hawks/Endeavour/Touya and Katsuki/Deku/All Might.
I hope the future will prove me wrong for his character. Actually, I hope everything I’m saying is wrong and idiotic, and Horikoshi will make every scene I criticized worth it and a means to an end. I mean, he clearly has the talent and writing ability to pull off some of the best character development I’ve ever seen, so anything’s possible. but yeah, I don’t really believe it for now, and I’m frustrated, because Shouto had so much potential.
tldr; I liked Shouto as a character, but he dwindled after some time, and now I feel as if he’s not the focus of his own storyline, because this place is occupied by the much more dynamic relationships of Endeavour, Touya and Hawks. And I’m not even mad, because their dynamic is much more interesting. However, I feel like Horikoshi grew bored of Shouto, and has put much more soul into Katsuki and Deku as of late.
I’m welcoming any responses, if people are seeing an aspect of his character I don’t, please enlighten me! I miss enjoying his character, and I’m not opposed to seeing him in a different light. I just needed to put down my thoughts in writing to make sense of them lol.

Warning!! Long post ahead (LOL)
I’ve been meaning to do one of these for a while now. Quite a few friends and followers have asked me ‘what big influences can you think of that have inspired you as an artist/creator?’
A lot of movies, games, books, tv series, artists, and writers have influenced my drawing style and storytelling - some of them more so than others. (As represented by the larger squares in the image)
So here we go!! The numbers for each inspiration were chosen at random, the order doesn’t have any significance lol
1. Cardcaptor Sakura - (and the works of CLAMP in general I suppose because I read them all) Cardcaptor Sakura wasn’t my first manga but it holds a really special place in my heart because it’s lore and depictions of love has influenced my storytelling a LOT. I was obsessed with CLAMP and their art style when I was young to the point I would trace their drawings to learn and emulate their style.  To this day I feel like it left a big impact on my art style especially.
2. Cyborg 009 - When I was a kid my parents told me and my brother that we couldn’t afford cable TV and reduced our service to the news channels and public broadcasting.  We didn’t have cable TV for several years and when we finally got it back when I was 12, one of the FIRST TV programs I saw was Cyborg 009. I was just beginning to understand what anime was, since the only anime I’d seen was before our cable got cut, and I was so young I didn’t know it WAS anime. I immediately fell in love with Cyborg 009. I  loved the characters, the story, everything - and I still do! It was the beginning of my exploration of the anime genre as a whole haha
3. ‘The Twelve Kingdoms’ book series  - Around the same time I started watching Cyborg 009, I began getting into manga. While browsing the section in the bookstore one day I came across the first novel in The Twelve Kingdoms series. I was surprised to find a novel in the manga section and decided to browse through it. I couldn’t put it down! The rich world building and storytelling pulled me in and left me wanting more. I devoured the entire book series and the way the world was brought to life really stuck with me and influenced my own world building.
4. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - my very first Final Fantasy game, and it was a spinoff title to boot! I was drawn in by the dark, melancholic world and cute graphics. I played this game a lot with my friends and even though multiplayer was a nightmare to set up, we had so much fun. I wasn’t able to beat it until I was 16, and the story left me in tears. The Crystal Chronicles games as  whole have left a HUGE impact on me, but the first one especially so.
5. Sonic the Hedgehog - My first game ever! My brother and I first played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when we were around 3 or 4 years old. We were hooked on our parent’s Sega Genesis system and Sonic was our favorite! When we’d get home from school we’d fight over who got to play first in single player, eventually we settled on a system, My brother would play sonic, and since Tails couldn’t die even if he ran out of rings, I would fight all the boss battles as Tails while my brother tried to keep Sonic out of the way. Using this system we made it all the way up to Metal Sonic but could never beat him. We’d have 99 lives too because we knew ALL the secrets of the game LOL. I’ve played most of the Sonic titles since then, including my favorite, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
6. Sailor Moon - my ‘first’ anime. I was very young when I first saw this anime. I didn’t even know what anime was! But the portrayal of girl power and how strong all the female characters were really stuck out to me, raised as I was in a women-are-inferior-and-should-serve-their-husbands religious household. Sailor Jupiter was my favorite because she was a tomboy and wore ponytails just like me haha
7. Fullmetal Alchemist - I think I’ve touched on this before, but I have had really weak bones since I was a little kid. In middle school I was constantly on and off of crutches or in and out of wheelchairs with broken bones and such. (I blame being a huge clutz) It got to the point my classmates started calling me ‘calamity Jane’ and making fun of me. To that dorky middle school girl with crutches and leg braces, Edward Elric was my HERO. Disability representation matters folks! It certainly helped me through a rough time in my life.
8. The works of Studio Ghibli - My first Ghibli movie was My Neighbor Totoro, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I actually managed to get my mom into them too, so now we can have mother/daughter quality bonding time over new Ghibli movies when they come out. It gives us a lot of fond memories together and I enjoy those times I get to spend with her. Mom and I may not see eye to eye all the time, but I truly treasure the memories I have of watching Ghibli films with her.
9. Odin Sphere - This one is more recent, and one I blame @heebiejeebiejade for. I love everything about it. The story, the art, the characters!   It tore my heart out and the writing is just superb I love it so much. and the ART my god it’s so beautiful.
10. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles the Crystal Bearers - I decided I needed to make this one separate from the earlier Crystal Chronicles section. Mostly because this game HEAVILY influenced and changed my life. Not only is it my favorite game ever, it brought me to many of my current friendships! If not for this game I never would have met @heebiejeebiejade @killerkitty4 @indestructiblemoog @shadyfolk @ninjamonkeystudios and SOOOOO many others. These friendships mean a great deal to me. They’ve changed and shaped who I am today and I’m truly grateful for them, and they never would have been possible without Crystal Bearers.
11. Dragonball - Another one of those I never knew it was Anime cartoons I watched as a young child. I loved Dragonball and later Dragonball Z. The characters, the storytelling, the fight scenes, I loved it all because it was so different from what I was used to seeing in American cartoons. My brother and I would have Super Saiyan battles in our backyard throwing Kamehamehas at each other and laughing and generally annoying our neighbors XD
12. Over the Garden Wall - Another more recent influence. Over the Garden Wall was one of the first new cartoons that grabbed my attention due to it’s great pacing and creepy Americana storytelling. Mysteries, ghosts, the afterlife, purgatory, this show dealt with a lot of creepy things while simultaneously making it funny and endearing. I rewatch it often and it’s one of my favorites.
13. Legend of Mana and the Seiken Densetsu Series - Again, I blame @heebiejeebiejade entirely for this. She sent me a huge box with every game in the Seiken Densetsu series in it along with the guidebooks saying “you HAVE to play these.” I knew she liked them so I gave them a try and YEP as per usual with anything Jade introduces me to, they COMPLETELY DESTROYED ME. Love, sacrifice, life, death, and rebirth, are a huge part of these title’s storytelling and they drew me in completely. Legend of Mana and Dawn of Mana especially. Their world building and plot devices may or may not have heavily influence my own XD
14. The ‘Stravaganza’ book series - The first time I picked up a Stravaganza book title was when I was twelve and found this really shiny book in a used bookstore for $3. It featured a picture of Venice, and a pair of violet eyes staring at you from behind a shiny silver mask on the cover. I’m not sure why It spoke to me, it just did. I bought it and finished it within a day. That book was titled City of Masks and I loved it a lot! And then I found out there were more! An entire series! The books featured time travel and dimensional travel, espionage and intrigue! I read and devoured them all and to this day I hold out hope for a final volume to finish the series.
15. Avatar: the Last Airbender - At age 12 I dismissed Avatar as a kid show originally. I scoffed at it and laughed at my little brother for being so into it. Then I saw the first episode. And it was then that I knew what a mistake I had made. I know a LOT of people love Avatar, and for good reason! I don’t have to go super in-depth here because I’m sure most of you already know how great it is. It’s definitely influenced both my art style and my storytelling.
16. Hikaru no Go - This one’s special. When I was in high school I was bullied a LOT. Like, people writing DIE YOU WHORE in my textbooks and putting thumb tacks in my gym shoes kind of bullying. They’d touch me and then pretended that they’d die of the plague. That if anyone had a crush on me they were worse than trash. The kind of bullying that made me a bit suicidal in my teen years. Lucky for me my mother had bought me a copy of Monthly Shonen Jump in early 2005, She knew that I liked manga and thought it would be the perfect magazine gift for me for valentine’s day. Boy was she right and one of the manga featured in it was Hikaru no Go. I loved the art style, and the storytelling. I was instantly captivated by the characters and I wanted to know what happened next. I soon subscribed to SJ monthly and eagerly awaited the next installment each month. What this meant was that whenever I was feeling like I wanted to end it all, I’d remember that I didn't’ know what happened next and would wait. I honestly believe that Hikaru no Go is at least partially responsible for me making it out of high school alive, and I treasure it to this day. (Also I’m on anti-depressants now so don’t worry about me y’all okay? XD) There was another manga like this, but I'mnot sure how to feel about that one anymore :(
17. Magic Knight Rayearth - I know I’ve already listed CLAMP as a heavy influence on me, but I felt Magic Knight Rayearth deserved it’s own place because it was my first manga ever! I’d seen the commercial for the anime on one of my old DVDs way back when, and I was already intereseted in it when I happened to find the manga in a bookstore! I bought it and reread the first volume a dozen times before I even found the second ahaha. I must have read the complete set a hundred times now and let me tell you the twist ending of the first part kills me every time! The first of my manga obsession ahaha
18. Tales of the Abyss and The ‘Tales of’ game series - Tales of the Abyss was my first (and still my favorite) Tales game, and since then I’ve played almost all of them! They definitely influenced my character designs, most of my friends comment on how Tales-like my costumes are ahaha
19. The 'Riyria’ book series - The most recent novel series I’ve read. It’s got everything I’d ever want to see in a novel, it’s so great and the story is so deep and intriguing! I recommend everyone to read it, it’s a MUST READ for sure!
20. Journey - The first time I played this game I cried for three hours. I felt like I’d just had a religious and spiritual experience far beyond what I’d ever experienced in a video game before. It was just something so… beyond me. I recommend everyone to play this game at least once in their lifetime. I can’t really form the words to express what it means to me. It’s just something you’d have to experience for yourself.
21. Ico: Castle in the Mist and Shadow of the Colossus - Another famous one lol a LOT of people love these games but In particular I want to bring attention to the Ico novelization, Ico: Castle in the Mist. I really enjoyed the novel and it’s worldbuilding. The games will always be special to me, but that novel man. That novel.
22. Yu Yu Hakusho - One of my guilty favorites! I first saw Yu Yu Hakusho when I was 16 and I’ve loved it ever since! I’ve always been fascinated with spirits and the occult, but I definitely had to hide this one from my religious parents.
23. Black Cat - Honestly this one surprises me. I love those secret identity and hidden horrible past animes and this one definitely fits that bill. I think this one established my favorite tropes in my life more than anything else.
24. A Bride’s Story - Two words. THE ART. MY GOD THE ART. This manga, in addtion to being a really great read, has some of the most detailed artwork I’ve ever seen. It’s influenced me greatly and I encourage everyone to read it.
25. Bravely Default - Bravely Default definitely influenced my story building and characters, it was one of the first 3DS games that really captivated me and drew me into its world!
26. Yu-Gi-Oh!! - Another series I had to hide from my parents ahah This anime was something I really loved in my childhood. Again, I really love ghosts and spirits and things like that so this anime was probably what started it all!
27. Fire Emblem Awakening and the Fire Emblem Series - Awakening was my first Fire Emblem game (Cue whining from the FE purists LOL) but since then I’ve played them all! (Including the JP only ones don’t start with me haters ahahahaha) The storytelling and bonds between the characters really resonated with me and it’s become one of my favorite game series!
28. The ‘Legend of Zelda’ game series - The repeating themes of good vs evil throughout the Legend of Zelda games really struck a chord with me, especially when I was young. Twilight Princess and Wind Waker especially influenced me. “A Sword has no strength unless the hand that wields it has courage.” Is something that has suck with me for a long time, and something that encourages me and helps me get through my everyday life.
29. The Final Fantasy Series - Final Fantasy has had a HUGE impact on my life. I already gave Crystal Chronicles it’s due, now it’s the numbered titles turn! Final Fantasy has influenced my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined ten years ago even! I’ve played them all (Except 11, curse having no internet as a teenager!) and they’ve definitely shaped my lore and world building skills!
30. Naruto - Okay I’ll admit it! I was Naruto weeboo trash in highschool!!! Oh woe is me!! Just kidding! I honestly still love Naruto, and it’s something that really stuck with me for a long time, since it’s one of the first anime I saw (after learning what anime was ahaha)
31. Gravity Falls - How can I put this… Hmmmm. Gravity Falls has heavily influenced my character building. I love it’s characters. Don’t get me wrong I love the story too! But the characters are honestly what kept me coming back for more! Not to mention that epic foreshadowing in season one. Yep.
32. Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning - Another one of my favorite manga in Highschool that oddly helped me through my depression. The main character’s struggles sort of resonated with me and helped my healing process in my late teens and early twenties.
33. Final Fantasy XII - Okay WORLDBUILDING. Let’s talk about worldbuilding because MY GOD has Final Fantasy XII have it. I love the Ivalice games in general, but the amount of effort put into 12 having a world that feels like it’s alive is astounding to be honest. The world truly feels like it’s alive, and it drew me in for over 400 hours of gameplay on Playstation 2. To this day it’s the game I have logged the most hours into.
34. Radiant Historia - What drew me in here was TIME TRAVEL and STORY AND WORLDBUILDING. This game is a hidden gem in the Nintendo DS’s extensive library. It doesn’t have the best graphics or even the best gameplay mechanics, but it didn’t matter to me because the story kept me coming back for more! By far one of my favorite games ever. (Pssst go play it, it got a remake for 3DS)
35. Final Fanasy XIV - This one is a favorite, not just because of it’s story and world building - both of which are excellent btw - but because of the connections I’ve made through it. I have made so many friends online through this game, friends that make me feel better about myself as a person, and who’ve stuck with me through the hard times along with the good.
36. Mushishi - We’ve established that I love ghosts and spirits and things, but this series made me love connecting it with nature, something that has heavily influenced my writing and my own webcomic!
37. Voltron - Mostly the first two seasons. Beast King Golion was one of my first super sentai anime as a child, and I loved seeing it remade! It was like getting to revisit my childhood
38. Gundam SEED and the Gundam Series - Okay Gundam has influenced me throughout my life, starting with Gundam Wing when I was six years old, and continuing on to this day. The one I’ve watched the most times though, is Gundam SEED, and it’s influenced my characters and storytelling a lot!
Wow, congrats to whoever manged to read this far. You’re really determined I’ll give you that! Thanks for reading!

We list ten reasons why My Hero Academia is one anime you should be watching.
[dropcap size=small]E[/dropcap]very once in a while, an anime comes along that’s just what you needed to see at a time when you needed to see it the most, and for me that anime is My Hero Academia (or Boku No Hero Academia).
I’ve never felt more compelled to write about an anime in my life, so after some careful consideration, I’ve compiled a list of 10 reasons why My Hero Academia is worth your time.
Before I begin, here’s a little rundown of what My Hero Academia is all about (without spoiling too much, of course):
The story follows Izuku Midoriya, a middle school student who dreams of one day becoming the greatest hero. In a world in which 80% of the population have superpowers known as Quirks, Izuku was born completely normal with no superpowers to speak of. Undeterred, Izuku decides to pursue his dream anyway and finds himself enrolled into one of the world’s most prestigious hero academies. At its heart, My Hero Academia tells the story of how an ordinary person without any special superpowers can find their own strength, and make their dreams come true in the face of adversity.
Okay, grab a cup of tea and a snack or two, and get yourself ready for some top ten goodness. Let’s get stuck in!
10. The second season is just as good as the first (so far).
There’s no better way to kick things off then by telling you that My Hero Academia is consistently great to watch. The second season began at the beginning of April, and as it currently stands we’re now 5 episodes in. Every single episode has kept me wanting more (just as each episode of the first season did), and I still find myself eagerly awaiting every new episode each week.
Waiting for new episodes got me like:
9. It’s well paced and keeps you invested.
Happily tying into reason 10 in our top ten list, MHA nails its pacing with the perfect blend of suspense and action to keep you invested. The flow keeps everything fresh and interesting, and it doesn’t fall victim to any filler like some other anime shows.
8. It’s packed with humour.
Never discount the laughs. A generous sprinkling of humour throughout the series adds to the viewing experience in the best way possible, making it all the more charming and fun. Several characters won me over with their hilarious antics (I’m looking at you, Iida).
7. But it can also make you cry.
The feels are strong. So so strong. Yes, you will find humour in MHA, but you’ll also find plenty of tears too. Filled with bittersweet moments and inspirational events that strike you square in the chest, this anime has it all. Happy tears, sad tears, fist-pumping tears – you name it. If you’re anything like me, we recommend you have some tissues on standby (better safe than sorry, right?).
6. It’s also got an amazing soundtrack.
The soundtrack is its own character. The music marries soft and uplighting with badass rock guitar riffs perfectly. In short, the soundtrack to My Hero Academia is like adding the most epic icing onto what is already one delectably good cake. Just listen.
5. It has killer animation.
MHA is so well animated that you won’t ever want to tear your eyes away from the screen. The bold lines, vibrant colours and slick sequences are all done so superbly, it truly makes each and every episode a feast for the eyes You’re sure to find yourself captivated by what you’re seeing plenty of times throughout the series.
4. And epic fight sequences.
The fight sequences are always a highlight if they pop up in an episode, and that’s largely thanks to the (aforementioned) stylish animation. There are so many fight sequences that will stay in your mind long after the episode is over, and they’re truly the best kind. Whether it’s a full-scale battle or a test of strength, every single fight has been suspenseful and engaging, and when coupled with a song plucked from the amazing soundtrack, they are truly a sight to behold.
3. It has a whole host of interesting, fleshed-out characters.
The diverse range of characters and their array of different Quirks are at the heart of why this anime is so good. Beyond our protagonist Izuku Midoriya, we meet a host of characters that all have their own story arcs, which adds a lot of dimension to the supporting cast. From All Might to Todoroki, and Eraser Head to Uraraka, each and every character will pique your interest. Simply put: the character design is magnificent.
2. It’s based on the amazing manga series by Kōhei Horikoshi.
Where there’s a good anime, there’s almost always a good manga. When I started watching MHA, I immediately ran out and bought the first two volumes of the manga, and it is easily one of the best I’ve read in a long time. After the first three chapters, I could already tell it would make its way into my top five manga titles, and for me, that’s the best praise I could ever give it. Whilst it might not be to everyone’s tastes, I love Horikoshi’s art style. Sure, it can be goofy and exaggerated at times (which I find charming), but it’s not afraid to hit you hard with some darker moments, and Horikoshi’s use of bold lining makes it feel as though every moment is jumping off the page. The pace of the storytelling in each volume so far makes it a real page-turner, and I found myself flying through the chapters and thoroughly enjoying every second of it.
Phew, you still with me? Good. If you’ve stuck around for reason number 1 then you’re pretty great, because this is the best reason of all.
(Fanfare music)
1. It’s inspiring.
Izuku is constantly surrounded by others telling him he’ll never make it as a hero without a Quirk, but he keeps moving forward against all the odds and fights to make his dreams come true. I’m getting emotional just thinking about how admirable Izuku’s drive to succeed is.
I had reached a crossroads in my life when I stumbled upon this anime. At a time when I had convinced myself it was no longer worth trying because I would never amount to anything, Izuku taught me that if I believe hard enough in both my dreams and in myself, I can make it too. It’s saccharine and cliche, I know, but I don’t care, because My Hero Academia helped me have more faith in myself, and that’s not something you come by every day. In the simplest of terms, MHA pushed me to try harder
Okay, sure, you might not have the same personal experience as me, but regardless of what’s going on in your own life, this anime has one heck of an uplifting story that will leave you feeling like you can do anything if you put your mind to it.
We all need a little inspiration sometimes, and I truly hope this anime helps you as much as it helped me.
Honourable mentions:
Great voice acting – I watched MHA in Japanese with English subtitles, so I can only vouch for the incredible Japanese voice cast, but I’ve heard only good things about the English dubbed version.
Great OPs and Outros – The openings and outros to both the first and second seasons are fantastic. They capture the spirit of the anime perfectly and I never want to skip past them.
If this has convinced you to give My Hero Academia a go (yay), you can watch both seasons on Crunchyroll or Funimation*
*This article was in no way sponsored by or affiliated with either site, we’re just directing you to the best place to stream MHA (plus, I think both sites are pretty rad).
