My entry for Starfall this year, Cosmic Roseate!
I'm rather proud of how this one came out to be honest. A bit sad it's in the skin range rather than accent, but oh well.

@cutedragonsfr I hear your inbox is empty, so!
Here’s Wit (he/they), one of my gen1 obelisks from the release day, who just got an accent (Sunset Astros by Raire) to make him even more of a colourful spectacle
They’re a stage magician whose performances are more slight of hand and mechanical wonders than actual magic. His mission in life is to bring a smile to the face of anyone who needs it

Lair Review for Raire #24178
(My lair review thread is here. If images don't display, please view this post on a blog rather than on the dashboard.)
Starting off right at the beginning, this is a very nice accent, and I particularly like that you've matched it with the Thresher's Flatfins. I think the pattern on the fins pairs really well with the interplay of sunlight and water shown on the accent. Also, I like the way that the highnoon hat cuts off the upper portion of the flatfins -- nice layering!
Ooh, gold ... pretty! I like how the transparent colors of the accent's wings highlight the colors already present in the shimmer secondary. Very nice choice of a dragon to go with that accent!
OK, three for three here at the start of your lair. I happen to like Spruce quite a lot, but what I really admire here is how well her colors match the celebration sage stuff -- it's as if that set were made for her! You've got the same shades of orange, red, and green in the apparel that you do in the dragon. Also, the slight orange tint to her pearl? Choice.
That's such a pretty, subtle accent and you've found a great dragon for it. There's almost a parchment or tattoo effect that comes from that accent over her secondary. I enjoy how her tertiary matches her secondary and how the accent purple in her primary matches the subtle purples in the accent.
The subtle circuit on his wings is really cool; combined with the accent, he gives me Subnautica or Abzu vibes: ancient ruins deep in the ocean. Also love the color match between his apparel, especially the collar, and his iridescent. And I like how the glowing clawtips mimic the little glowy spots in the accent.
This is a gorgeous skin to start with but I think the Marigold Flower Crown really adds to it. Nice choice!
Beach dragon beach dragon! The Seashell Mantle can be pretty hard to work with -- I've only managed to work it into an outfit once. But this is a great use of it; I love that you found an accent that matches it so well. Nice job on familiar matching, too. Okeanos' genes are really nicely coordinated as well: normally I'm not a big fan of Freckle, but of course it works very well for a beach-themed dragon.
Ooh, more fantastic accent use. I love the way this accent matches his primary and secondary but I especially love the little hints of Sand Hex peeking out at the top of his wings -- it gives this sweet almost aquarium-like look, making me envision the shore near which all these sharks are swimming.
I love the neat, subtle accents on Galaxy and Borealis, too.
Wow, her crackle does an amazing job matching that accent and giving an impression of ice. It looks especially good against her darker primary.
Oooh, bioluminescence! I love your choice of skin here and even though you've only used one apparel item, it's chosen perfectly. Plus, her tert matches the accent color of her primary and secondary, which is always a big plus for me.
I really like this skin, first off, and I also like how the coppery buckles and such on his clothing match his orange eyes.
A gorgeous skin that you've combined with great apparel! Purple and gold is a great, regal color combination, and I especially like how her eyes match her body colors. And, even though bios aren't the focus of this review, I enjoyed her bio as well. She and my Talise would get along well, I suspect.
I like the accent you've chosen for Hubble but what I really like is his lore. It's cool that he's tied into Nebula not only in her role as a seer but as a star-themed dragon, and the notion of Nebula looking at him and instantly knowing he needs a home is very sweet. I just like him TBH; he seems like he would be a nice dragon to know.
Wow, that skin is gorgeous, and it works so well with his primary! Nice choice.
I've never seen Orca Iridescent before and good lord, it's gorgeous. Also, nice lore! I really like the idea of him working very hard for justice and truth in ways that are typically underappreciated. (And having a legal department or law firm among your dragons is a very cool and original idea.)
Ohhhh. What an accent! What a dragon to use for that accent! She's gorgeous! I also love the art in her bio, especially the pixels and chibis.
Another great accent, and I like how you've matched it to the green silks, the Voltaic Stormclaws, and to her existing Circuit. A very nice choice! I also enjoyed how you've described her in her bio. I definitely got a picture of her personality!
I like the way the curve of the accent at the edge of her wing mimics the curve of the seraph gene on at the middle of her wing. And Stonewash Seraph matches her Ice primary and tert beautifully.
I love the muted colors produced by her Stained -- it's a fantastic gene that creates beautiful color combinations. Also, the way you've layered the sylvan stuff to create similar muted colors is absolutely gorgeous.
Ooh, I really like the way his colors go together. I love the green tint to the White Shimmer and also the way it turns brownish at the edge of the wings, matching the Beige and Stone.
Moooore scales! Such a cool accent. And I enjoy the match between the accent color in the Tarnish Poison and the Abyss.
What a cool accent! And a nice choice of dragon to go with it; I especially like the okapi on his tail, which matches the heavy black lines in the accent, and the splash of color across his eyes.
I really like Fragari's lore -- the idea that he was happy with himself but had to come to terms with his perception of others' expectations. That's an important thing for anyone to be able to do, and I liked reading about how he'd realized that he and his desires were enough.
As with Sargasso: rad accent and very nice color matching.
Oh, he looks so good in the Tree Warden's Garb! And I like the effect of the accent on his tail. (Also I just noticed that his tongue matches his tert, which is neat.)
Satellite's colors are just neat. I love the backlit look of his wings.
That combination of Shimmer and Ghost looks very nice. It's also cool to see so much of the Lightning festival apparel together.
What a cool accent, and what a good dragon to put it on. Her primary and tertiary match the corals very nicely, while her dark secondary provides a good backdrop for the accent's focus. Also, that scarf goes excellently with her colors, especially her little pink toenails.
Copper is a really cool color, and the match between it, Robin, and the accent and apparel you've used is great to see. The way the accent layers over the opal on his leg is especially nice. And good job on the matching familiar, too.
Ooooh. Good skin. Nice choice of name for a Fire ambassador, too.
Wow, Tarnish Tapir and Camo Shimmer look really good together. And the layering of the cloaks creates a beautiful color that matches the bluish green on her face and legs excellently.
Oh ... pretty! I can definitely see the name "Universe" for him. That accent goes so nicely with his colors, as does the kelpie mane.
Wow, she works really well with all the Lightning stuff -- very nice colors. Nice matching familiar, too.
Now she looks like she's up to some cool stuff -- I'm getting monster hunter / supernatural detective vibes. I like her name, and another good accent.
Oh, I love that Aqua Thylacine -- it goes beautifully with the Ivory Shimmer! Look at her little green tongue. It's great.
Such good, soft colors -- I love the Platinum Facet and Lavendar Okapi together. And, once again, nice accent.
I like how the sakura flowers match her secondary, and the silks do a nice job of bringing out the little hint of green from her tert.
His outfit looks so simple and clean -- it's nice! I like how the waistcoat and vest layer together.
Ooh, that accent -- you've found the perfect dragon to use it on. Nice job accessorizing it, too.
I love how that accent looks against the blue of his wings. A very sunshiney, stained-glass vibe ... It reminds me of the art in Tangled, actually.
Beeeees! A very fun accent and a nice choice of dragon to go with it. I especially like how the Sunshine Facet matches the drips of honey on his body.
Ooh, her colors are so nice! I thought she had stained for a second because that's usually the case when I see nice muted colors like that, but nope. Love the Silver Shimmer and Slate Iridescent together.
All the eerie cyan stuff is so pretty on her. At first I thought she was wearing another great accent, actually, with the pendants and stuff. Once again, a great layering job with the two grasps -- I love how you've created a shade of blue-green that matches her very well. Also, some really intriguing lore there. Thank you for showing me your lair; I quite enjoyed it!

hoooly shit son. what a pretty boy. i looove the bright primaries with the black+ white apparel. that accent is so gorgeous on him! the blue bits match his primary just enough while still being nicely contrast-y, and the gold looks so good with his wings, and the reds match his belly aasdfdsa. im in love
Tumblr media
a handsome man... i love how well denim petals and aqua toxin match, being such different colors! his apparel looks so cozy and perfect for an adventuring type. i love that hat, i wish we had a version without the tools, i'd use it all the time. and his lil accent! i almost didn't notice but it's the perfect little final note.
Tumblr media
hoo boy i love me some browns+ creams, and this is such a good example of why. her belly's mostly hidden but the cream color is still there in her apparel! wow i never noticed how those gladeboughs matched the thorns apparel so well... i love the little tinge of blue on her wings too, it kinda matches the blue shadows on the kelpie mane. all in all a+ good brown girl i love
Tumblr media
what a sweet looking snip snap! she looks so cozy in her lil sweater n scarf, and her accent looks so so good with her colors. the black of her glasses n sweater matches her wings and balances her out, i think without them she'd look very lopsided.
Tumblr media
a very very good windy gal... with a watery accent? either way she looks super good, the spotty scales are so nice against her seafoam green. she's very balanced, she's complex looking without being too busy. and the magenta spines actually look good with her other colors!

Cher journal,

Nikolai had been told that he was going to meet a reconnaissance specialist and been given a name, but species would have been more useful. At the most exotic, he had expected another machinist. He did not expect the khaytni male, with polished claws and wearing nothing except a belt and few anklets. He had thought the name was odd, but there were many odd enough ethnic groups that it hadn’t made him think non-human.
“Are you done staring?” Rair asked, the accent strange and flat, the stresses on the words all wrong, but the best an inhuman throat could do.
“Ah,” Nikolai said. “Yes,” he added, taking a step back to allow Rair inside the hired room. He was not done staring. Rair moved with a sinuous grace. Nikolai had never seen khaytni in the flesh. He had memories of biology classes and the videos that sometimes made the rounds on the networks, usually of hunts or weird sex.
“I have never worked with anyone like you,” Nikolai said carefully. He did not want to offend. He did not know how to read the expression in those eyes. For all that Rair was over a head shorter, he made Nikolai feel like something small and fuzzy in front of a predator. There were a lot of sharp teeth in that mouth.
“I have worked with humans before,” Rair said, with a flick of the tail. There was language there that Nikolai did not understand. Rair flared his wings his wings slightly, a little worryingly in the small space of the room.
“Aren’t you a little obvious for this mission?”
Rair cocked his head and made a chirrup in his throat that could have been anything from amusement, to thoughtfulness, to annoyance. Nikolai had no idea how to even measure that one. “They will not see me.”
Nikolai cast a look over Rair’s skin. The scales were jet black, with a purplish sheen. There were the wings. And a tail. “Really,” Nikolai said, raising an eyebrow, but Rair was no better at reading his expression than Nikolai was Rair’s.
“They might see me,” Rair said. “But it will be the last thing they see. And you will delete the surveillance.”
“Your plan is to kill them all?”
Rair made some sort of huff. “I do not know why else I would be hired.”
“No one told me that.”
Nikolai twitched as Rair coiled the tip of his tail loosely around his ankle. “We are to break in, and to retrieve some information, yes? I do not know your people’s technology, so I was told you would do that part.”
“Yes,” Nikolai accepted. Most of his briefing had been on how to perform the data breach.
“I think we were not informed about much,” Rair said.
Fortunately the room was furnished with cushions and a low table, so Rair could actually settle on one when Nikolai invited him to sit. Rair neatly coiled his tail around himself. Nikolai had no idea what to offer. “Do you take tea?” he asked.
“I ate yesterday,” Rair said.
“Er,” Nikolai said, without any idea how to respond.
“I generally do not take food from humans,” Rair said.
“No, it is a drink.”
There was a curious click in Rair’s throat. He took out something from one of the pouches on the belt and unfolded it into a screen. After a moment, he said, “It is unlikely to poison me. I would like to try.”
Nikolai stepped over into the kitchenette to make the tea, serving it in the small, delicate tea cups they favoured here. Rair picked it up with the tips of is claws and sniffed it. He tasted it by dipping the tip of his tongue into the liquid. Decreeing it drinkable, for the next taste he copied how Nikolai sipped it.
“I do not think killing them all will be acceptable,” Nikolai said. It was interesting how Rair’s presence didn’t trip his conditioning. Too non-human? Wrong body language?
“We have to discuss our plan, then,” Rair said.

How to make accents for Flight Rising
Hi folks! I was asked how I make accents on Flight Rising, so I figured I'd give a step by step guide on some aspects of it to make it clearer to any new FR skin and accent artists how some things work.
Full disclosure, I usually work on Photoshop for skins and accents even though I do most of my art in Clip Studio Paint. There might be differences in other programs that I can't explain since I do not have experience with them.
Alright, first things first, let's look at how the layers in the template files for each dragon and gender combo is set up, by starting with a female spiral file:
Tumblr media
There are two folders - the base folder (named Skin Parts) that serves as reference, and the accent/skin area itself (folder named Accent Parts). The Skin Parts folder consists of a basic silhouette layer (called Flats), and a few details on top of it (such as the lines, which go on top of the shadows, which go on top of specific subarea layers, like the wings and belly).
So usually, what is supposed to happen according to the tutorial, is using the Skin parts as reference, you draw your actual accent or skin on the layer called "Accent goes here", which I've marked with a red star in the following image:
Tumblr media
You'll notice that the shadows and lines layer on the accent folder is "clipped" (that little arrow going down from Clip lines and the clip shadows pointing down that I've circled in the next image). This means that whatever is on the "clipped layers", will only show up that layer's art on the areas that have been drawn in the layer it has been clipped to.
Another Tip
Here's another tip, which is how I generally make my accents. You don't have to only draw on one layer like a single painting.
What I do is make a separate folder I often just call "Accent", and use different layers there to create overlap effects. I'll deconstruct part of one of my accents to show you how I use different layers. I'm going to use my accent Sunset Astros
Tumblr media
This is what my accent folder looks like for it:
Tumblr media
It consists of three subfolders: the wings, the legs, and the belly. This is to keep things organized so that I know what I'm editing at a time.
The legs subfolder consists of a few layers that overlap with each other:
Tumblr media
The base layer, named "Gradient", is just a flat purple that has been edited to fade out at certain points:
Tumblr media
On top of it, I painted a layer with "tentacle" swirls that I named, appropriately, "Tentacles":
Tumblr media
On top of the tentacles, I added the light golden claws as a detail and name the layer "Claws". It's on a separate layer so I can play with different shades of gold to see what I like best:
Tumblr media
Finally, I add "glowing orbs", using Photoshop's layer effect outer glow:
Tumblr media
Building up on each layer, I finally have something nicer to look at. I do something similar for the other body parts until I build up something I'm satisfied with, drawing, or in the case of the belly, painting within the silhouette and belly area.
Once I finish the basics of the accent, which I've been working on without the lines and shadows on top of it, because those are in the "Accent Parts" folder, I have something that looks like this:
Tumblr media
Once I like how it looks, I copy or duplicate the "Accent" folder, and then merge all the layers in the copied folder into a single flat layer. In my experience, you right click the folder in the drawing software and then find the option to merge or flatten that specific folder. Not sure how it will be in your software.
Once that is done, I move the new "Accent" single layer into the "Accent Part" folder, underneath the "Accent goes here" layer. Then I delete the "Accent goes here" layer, which also automatically unclips the shadow and lines layers above, making them show all over, not just where the accent is:
Tumblr media
This is wrong, so what I do is right click the shadows layer, and click on "Create clipping mask". Then I repeat that process for the lines layer. That's when I am almost at my end result.

From there on, it's coloring the shadows and lines. For fun I'll share what my unclipped shadow layer looks like to show you how I change color for specific part of the accent. In this case, I have moved the layer setting from "Multiply" to "Normal" so you can see the colors but otherwise that layer always stays in Multiply. Make sure your layer is always on Multiply so that the shadows work well.

This is where I make sure to turn off and thus make invisible the "skin parts" folder (which in this case I had colored in that gradient of teal to darker blue-almost-purple). Then I have my end result:

I save it then, and then resize it to 350x350 pixels, save as a transparent png, and voila, I am ready to submit the skin/accent! I also make sure to also undo the resize in the Photoshop/non-png file so I don't accidentally save a smaller version in case I decide to make changes.
Erasing outside pixels
You might have stray pixels - pixels that are outside the lines. I do two things to erase those: I create a layer that I put at the bottom of the layers. I then fill it with a color that stands out against the other colors I've used in the accent so they stand out and are easier to see and erase. I also use the wand tool, go to the layer of "Flats", and select outside the actual silhouette of the dragon, and then just erase everything outside it - which isn't perfect, but will help you get most of the outside pixels. You want to have as few pixels outside as possible.
Hope this helps! If you have any questions let me know!
