As for us, we spent the evening at Marson’s farm with Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, the Danny Dankers and the Walter Langs stopping in to wish yours truly and my favorite doctor a happy New Year.

Clark Gable is still top man in the movies, by every contest and by every vote. In addition, his friends vote him the most regular fellow they know. He has the world at his feet – all but for one thing. He hasn’t for over two years been able to marry the woman he loves – Carole Lombard.
Both Carole and Clark have listened to the chit chat that Mrs. Gable would give her young husband a divorce the movement he asked for it. Both of them read interviews in fan magazines that Ria (a contraction of her name, Maria) would oh so gladly legally free her famous husband if he desired his freedom. But Mrs. Gable, after being told via the public print that he wanted nothing so much as to be able to marry the vivacious, blonde Carole Lombard, still professed that she didn’t believe he wanted his freedom.
Perhaps she expects Clark to send her an engraved card asking for a divorce. Clark has tried in every way to let her know that he loves Carole and is waiting for her to make the next move.
Mrs. Gable Well Paid
Mrs. Gable has been paid well in a generous settlement. Is she holding out for still more money? I dislike to believe that of her, for she was a woman of independent means when she married Clark and she is attractive enough to make a life of her own – so why should she stand in the way of his happiness? 
It’s no secret in Hollywood they weren’t getting along well for a year before they finally separated. 
When Clark met Carole six months later, no one was surprised to see him fall in love. To know Carole Lombard is to love her. She has a devastating sense of humor. She is always doing some kind thing for people less fortunate than herself. When Los Angeles was flooded she sent her entire check paid her for a radio broadcast to the flood sufferers. She adores Clark and she is good for him, as he is for her. Nowhere in Hollywood is there a pair better suited than Carole and Clark, two people who love the real things in life, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and horseback-riding.
Before Clark and Carole fell in love she was known as a girl who loved gay parties. She always wore the last word in smart clothes and was applauded for the original parties she gave. Today Carole surrounds herself with only a few close friends. She goes to very few big social events. She looks after Clark’s welfare, sees that he eats the right things, takes the proper exercise and encourages him in his career, which has gone to new heights since she became head woman in his life.
Clark May Sue For Freedom
If Mrs. Gable doesn’t divorce Clark – and from what she told intimates after it appeared in print that he wanted a divorce, she will need plenty of coaxing – it wouldn’t’ surprise me to see Clark go to Reno in case she still holds out and refused to let him have his precious freedom. Clark is first of all an innate gentleman. He hasn’t wanted to hurt the woman who was once his wife. But if I know Clark, and I think I know him better than most people since he is one of our closest friends, I look to see him give Mrs. Gable one more chance to divorce him and if she doesn’t, to see him file the suit himself.

Clark Gable and the girl friend Carole Lombard were among the film celebrities at the ringside as Henry Armstrong out-mauled Baby Arizmendi at Los Angeles. They saw Henry win fifth battle between the pair.

At the motion picture relief weekly radio show. The $10,000 paid each week for 16 weeks will build a home for destitute former picture stars. …. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard look in for a minute to give the proceedings their blessing. Carole’s face is as somber as her clothes – which are black. Being in love with Mr. Gable has effected a change in Miss Lombard’s personality. She is positively serious. (The smiles will return when Mrs. Rhea Gable takes that long-discussed trip to Reno).

Carole Lombard is an incurable ribber as her new contract with her agent, Myron Selznick, helped to bear testimony. 
Selznick had signed and forwarded it for her signature. In due time, it was returned and was deposited in his safe. 
Next day, Carole phoned a demand for 10 percent of all his earnings. She had had her attorney prepare a sheet to that effect and inserted it.

The long-awaited Clark Gable divorce, exclusively predicted by this column, will be obtained in Las Vegas by Mrs. Gable, who left for Nevada city to establish a residence. The Nevada law requires six weeks residence to obtain a divorce, after which it is possible to remarry. The deal to purchase the gorgeous Raoul Walsh estate in the San Fernando Valley was closed at a reported price of $65,000. Clark takes possession next week, moving his horses into the famous Walsh stables. Since he will be free to marry Carole Lombard in about two months, they are undoubtedly planning to make their home there until such time as they either sell the Northridge property Clark recently acquired, or build the home they originally planned on a picturesque knoll.

When Clark Gable marries Carole Lombard – in about seven weeks – their joint annual income will touch the $700,000 mark. I shudder to think of their combined income taxes.

March 6 Is Believed Gable-Lombard Day
Although Clark Gable and Carole Lombard refused to comment, the romance-makers of Hollywood Thursday were betting the popular film couple would be married on March 6.
On that date, they pointed out, Gable’s present wife, Mrs. Ria Gable, now in Nevada for divorce, will receive her divorce decree or at least she will be eligible to receive it, since she will have completed her six-week residence in the state.

Tennessee Metal Devastation Fest Descends on Lexington, TN
Lexington, Tennessee is not unlike many small towns dotted across the southeastern United States. The people, by and large seem friendly, the town is quaint with not a whole lot appearing to be going on. Settled between Memphis and Nashville, the town found itself in the middle of some controversy recently as a brand new heavy metal music festival landed on the sleepy town as its location of choice to host their inaugural festival. So much attention, that it even garnered an article from the local news station which captured some of the hysteria from the very Christian community alleging that, among other things, the event would “open a portal to hell”. And of course, in typical metal fashion, the festival relished the concept.
Drama aside, the festival was a celebration of underground music. 13 bands from all over the United States made their way to Tennessee to play for a crowd of around 1,200 attendees, an impressive feat for a first year festival, especially one celebrating underground heavy metal. The 13 acts were, Casket Robbery, DeOcculted, Devil Be My Judge, Eyes of the Living, Forever Broken, Grave Next Door, Gravehuffer, Hierarchy, Sleuthfoot, Spillage, Summoner’s Circle, The Red Mountain and Tommy Stewart’s Dyerwulf.
The music wasn’t the only thing that set the festival apart. There were a number of awesome vendors selling everything from delicious barbecue, vegan baked goods, various taxidermy animals, and even a booth selling awesome battle jackets and patches. SmithOddities had the cool set up with all of the awesome animal bones and taxidermy while Amish Mike’s Deadly Threads were dolling out the bad ass battle jackets. Another bad ass note to the festival, there was no charge for vendors to set up and no cut of their merch sales taken, the same applied to the bands.
In spite of all of the lead up and fears from the locals, the festival went off quite successfully. Everyone at the festival was awesome. Zach Moonshine and Raven Moonla, who organized the event, spent the day at the festival tent. They wore so many hats from collecting toys for the children of veterans and even handing out the laminates for the day. All of this while also stopping for pictures and saying hello to the legions of fans who stopped by. The incredible vendors, the crew, and most especially the fans, everyone respected each other and had a great time. That’s the beautiful thing about metal, especially underground metal, while the outside world tries to tear it apart or drive wedges into it, metal has and looks to always be, a community of individuals who have often stood on the outside of society looking in. Not that any of us ever did so with envy, we’d much rather carve our own niche in the world and, while it might seem weird to those in “normal” society, we wouldn’t have it any other way. No word on whether or not the opening of the pit to hell was successful or not, we’ll all just have to make sure to attend the festival next year. Which Zach and Raven have already promised, to see if it has happened or not. I read the Lexington Letter (the supplementary material that’s available for free on Apple Books) and there’s so much insight! Normally, I’m of the opinion that series shouldn’t need materials outside of the main source, but I was pleasantly surprised and delighted. (There’s also a LinkedIn profile for Lumon Industries???)
Spoilers:
Anyway, the main takeaways that I got are:
Innies are definitely childlike in nature. We’ve seen in that in the show: Dylan is like a little brother always annoying the rest of the crew and always expecting rewards, Irving is basically the know it all kid who goes by the book and definitely asks for homework, etc. 
Peg (our protagonist) is somewhat shocked that her innie is called Peggy. This is because Peggy was her childhood name and hasn’t been called that in years. 
The Letter goes into great depth about the work of the refiners/incentives, etc. We’ve seen this in the show already, but it’s an affirming source for how weird and eccentric the company is. 
The Letter also states that Peg is making 4x as much money as a bus driver for simply categorizing numbers.
At one point in time, the code detectors weren’t able to detect symbols/drawings. Hence, the reason why Peg and Peggy weren’t caught in correspondence because no one knew about Peg’s childhood language she made up with her sister. (I’m pretty sure all symbols are now prohibited because the detectors have since been updated). 
(Also... it’s implied that some memories might come back to those who are severed. Was Peggy naturally reintegrating? Or was knowing this secret language a passive ability?)
The file names are heavily implied to be names of cities. The Lexington Letter is a reference to Peggy’s assignment that she worked hard on. Merely two minutes after finishing her file, six people died in a car explosion. What is most astonishing is that it happened to Dorner Therapeutics (rival and main competitor for Lumon Industries). Peg says that it must have been corporate espionage, citing that several of Dorner’s prototypes had been destroyed. 
So, it seems that the emotions elicited from refining directly affects the city from the file they are refining? Something like that.
What is most interesting is that Peg herself even states that Lumon has hands in a lot of pies.
When she had first discovered Lumon was offering job opportunities, she was experiencing a lot of negative emotions from her previous job as a bus driver for kids. She said that she “hated her job” or something to that of affect and the radio began playing the ad. 
The ad itself was vague about what the employees were doing, but there was emphasis on “changing the world” and “changing your notion of work”.

There was also email correspondences concerning the Lexington Letter. The corresponds were Daria Thorne... and Jim Milchick.
So, which begs the question: Does Seth Milchick from our original MDR the brother/relative to this Jim Milchick stationed as a news reporter?
Seems like it’s true... Lumon definitely has their hands in many pies. 
The Lexington Letter also includes the Handbook for MDR and it’s genuinely interesting. The reason stated that people can’t go to different departments was because they wanted to minimize spread of infection/sickness. They even went as far as saying that the employees should wash their hands ten times a day. 
Very interesting.
Anyway, if you’re interested, you can find and read the short story yourself. It’s honestly really well written and gives Peg and Peggy a nice, well rounded character. The lore is fantastic and I can’t wait for next week’s episode! :D

“We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. Today, as one united people, we mark yet another year since the pivotal events of July 4, 1776, the day in which the 13 colonies of then British North America officially declared independence from the United Kingdom as the first of the great republics of the modern world, the United States of America, through an historic act made by several representatives of the Second Continental Congress - Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman – in the city of Philadelphia, Pennslyvania, and approved by almost the whole Congress on this very day 244 years ago led by its president John Hancock, which was the climax of a month-long efforts by its delegates on the future political destiny of the colonies, which had been at war against the Royal Navy and British Army for over a year. It was the definite act that sealed the decision made just 2 days ago by the Congress that given the circumstances faced by these colonies, the Congress, acting on the wishes of the whole people for independence, offically resolved that such is the desire of such a sovereign chamber representing the interests of the peoples of these colonies and thus it is their responsibilty to formally declare the political separation of these colonies from the British government and Parliament in London under the republican form.
The shots fired at Lexington and Concord 245 years ago was only the spark that began the long road towards the independence longed for by the American people and her armed forces supported by the governments, people and armed forces of France and Spain in the Revolutionary War,which would end in 1781 with the victory in Yorktown and the subsequent Treaty of Paris much later. It was only the first of many events that would shape the identity and character of our homeland to the superpower status and fame it enjoys today as a beacon of liberty and independence to the millions all over the globe. Today the billions of Americans remember with deep pride and honor the millions of men and women of her Armed Forces, the National Guard and state defense forces, as well as of the local state and community police and fire departments, beach lifeguard, forest firefighting and emergency management service units and the federal law enforcement organizations who in times of peace and war have offered their lives for the defense and protection of our homeland and people, many of them paying their ultimate sacrifices for the cause of the freedom and independence of the republic born out of the great revolution of 1776, as well as the people who through their time and talents brought glory and honor to the homeland and spread to their world the American way of life and culture, as well as our place as a sporting powerhouse, and ordinary citizens of all ways of life who even risked their lives to save others and thus placed their marks on the altar of our independent republic. In this wide land streching from the Pacific to the Atlantic, either in the snowy expanses of Alaska, the tropical lands of Hawaii, and in our vast and diverse landscape, whenever the people of all races, genders, nationalities and religions live, work and gather, as the nation has changed so much in these past 244 years, the character of this people will never change – a people humble, happy, loving, friendly and ready to share with others and the world at large.
We celebrate this great day in the dire circumstances of millions of Americans having suffered and died from the COVID-19 pandemic that has severely cripped the country, couped with a nationwide desire to unite millions of people to end the stigmas that have long divided this country by race and way of living. In these past months, the world witnessed how much this country has endured yet another sad chapter of its long history, first, thru the sacrifices and hard work of the millions of medical workers who have been working very hard to treat the sick even at the cost of their lives, especially those who have been afflicted by this pandemic, which has claimed thousands of lives nationwide, thru the hard work by those who have been making PPEs for the medical workers and face masks for the millions, as well as manufacturing equipment for the hospitals and medical centers, thru the best efforts by the medical profession to help produce vaccines and drugs against this pandemic, thru the hard work by those in the private sector who are still working to provide goods and services, thru the hard work and sacrifices by those working in agriculture, industry, the media and many other critical sectors, thru the brave services rendered by those who are a part of the armed forces, the National Guard, state defense forces, federal and local law enforcement and emergency units, and by the simple actions of millions in this great country not just to keep safe and healthy in the midst of this global crisis and support all those who have suffered a lot by it but also to ensure the preservation of national unity and the need to end the various social problems that this country and her people have encounted over the centuries.  Having endured both national and global crises before, it is the fervent wish today of her millons of people that, united as one nation and people they will overcome these trials, rise above expectations, and become once more a beacon of hope and a helping hand to millions everywhere in the globe. It is the prayer of millions of her citizens of diverse faiths that the country recovers from this crisis as a united nation and for the unity and prosperity of all her citizens, the indigeous communities and the expat communties that call it home.
It is with great honor that Americans everywhere mark this great day with great but simple celebrations as the whole country celebrates yet another year of independence and recalls once more the sacrifices of the millions of men and women in the federal and local uniformed services, the hard work and labor of her people in all fields of endeavor and the proud culture and tradition it shares to the millions of people everywhere in the globe. In these evolving times for the Union, her people and the uniformed services of the republic and the local communities, together with the nation’s industries and corporations, united more than ever as one, are determined, standing under one flag, to show the world that no matter what happens every American man and woman will be ready to risk life and limb to live the values that are part of the heritage of our vast country as the beacon of freedom and independence, the hand of assistance to the suffering of disasters everywhere, the strong arm of defense of the free nations of the world and the spirit of friendship, cooperation, excellence, sportsmanship and fair play of her people. To all our dear military, police, fire, EMS, forest service and border guard servicemen and women, agents and detectives and our  veterans of military and civil security operations within the country and abroad, as well as to all our national athletes and coaches in sports, we remember you today with our deepest respect and gratitude, for the service you gave for this country will be honored for generations to come. Today and always you will always be the beacons of hope for the youth of our tomorrow and for the millions of the people of the world an inspiration and guide towards a brighter future for all of humanity. In conclusion, may we who join the American people in celebration of this the 244th year anniversary of the historic declaration of the independence of the United States of America declared on this day in Philadelphia by the delegates of the Second Continental Congress, as one united people, mark this important day with fitting tributes and always hold on to the legacy and promise of this great land for the inheritance of our future generations and joyfully celebrate the very day in which the American people broke the chains of British colonial governance, which brought great suffering to the peoples of the colonies which make up the first states of our Union, and opened wide the door of a new era of the history of humanity with the creation of this the first independent republic in the American continent and in the modern world!

she stares at the handwriting she’s become familiar with, with a particular scrutiny. his letter is much too soon. normally, they’d come after a few weeks. maybe a month, if his regiment was on the move. but she just sent off own letter the other day. no way he’s gotten it so soon. and yet.
i know this letter is early. no kidding. but i couldn’t wait for yours to arrive. you’ll have to forgive me for putting this in writing.
claire brushes a stray strand of hair behind her ear and forces herself to sit still in her chair. her roommate is already squirming in her own seat, waiting for her reaction.
if i know you, you’re waiting for me to get to the point. but first, tell rachel i said hello. she does, and her roommate’s smile only grows wider. so, whatever this is, she’s in on it. i’m coming home soon. within the month. but that’s not why i’m writing. claire only realizes she’s biting her nails when she begins to taste nail polish. claire, i want to start a family. with you. i know this is sudden. but i wanted to give you some time to consider. i’ll - and here the handwriting shifts. still his, but rougher. - understand if you say no.
i can’t wait to see you. i love you.

she reads it. and reads it again. and once more, before she shoots up from her seat, letter still in her hand, eyes boring into the paper.
‘so?’ rachel asks, sing-song.
‘rachel, find my stationary, please,’ claire responds, eyes not leaving the letter. rachel bolts from her chair and runs into their room. she returns carrying a piece of paper and pen.
claire sits, turns back to their kitchen table. a family.
dear nate, she writes.
start thinking up names.

‘that vault up there has quite the interesting history,’ deacon says, after they’ve had their breakfast in her kitchen.
whisper blinks at him from across the kitchen table. ‘and what’s that?’
he leans forward, elbows on the table like her mother hated. ‘never been opened. everyone knows about the other vaults in the commonwealth, but 111?’ he clicks his tongue. ‘nothing.’
she frowns. ‘you want to go vault diving?’
‘i would, but it’s locked up. no one’s ever been able to get in, either.’
she shrugs. ‘as long as monsters don’t come out of it, it doesn’t matter to me. wonder what’s down there, though.’ she avoids his gaze, looking down at her pipboy, pretending to double-triple check their next destination.
deacon chuckles. ‘yeah, i wonder.’

preston approaches them before they leave, giving deacon a casual nod. ‘if i could talk to the general for a moment, uh, dingo?’ whisper nods, and deacon strolls over to dogmeat to play fetch, pretending he’s not going to be listening to their conversation anyway.
‘is everything okay, preston?’ she asks with a hand on her hip. she knows she’s been gone longer than she’s been here, leaving preston in charge of sanctuary and the budding minutemen. but he’s built them up well. even a few of the newer faces are dressed uniformly, carrying their own laser muskets.
he tears his gaze away from dogmeat bowling into deacon. ‘more than fine, general. in fact, with the other settlements you’ve established, we’re having trouble communicating with them all. it’s a good problem to have,’ he assures her. ‘the only way we can get further word out right now is from carla; she’s the only caravan that’s come this far up north. otherwise, i’ve sent out one of our newer scouts, but it’s not ideal.’
‘so we need a way to communicate more easily. like - another radio station? broadcast updates on each settlement so we know if anyone needs help or extra supplies.’ she looks up at him and his bright eyes. ‘you have a plan.’
‘i do.’ he practically vibrates with an excitement she never saw in him, weeks ago. at least, not before she agreed to help him. he’s a far cry from when they first met. ‘the minutemen used to have another headquarters, far out east. before the war, it was called fort independence. but we knew it as the castle.’
she has a vague image in her head of fort independence. too much information crammed into her head in college now useless and discarded. that, and she and nate hardly traveled far from boston’s city limits. ‘used to. what happened to it?’
he grimaces. ‘they say a monster from the sea breached the walls. all anyone knows is, most of the minutemen leadership died.’ he drops his gaze, voice going thoughtful. ‘i think that’s where all of our problems began.’
‘a... sea monster?’
‘uh, yes. but i think if we retake the castle and reestablish radio freedom, we stand a better chance of keeping our allies, and the greater commonwealth, safe.’
she blinks. ‘a sea monster,’ she repeats. ‘okay. that sounds reasonable - ’
he steps closer. ‘should i have a group meet us outside the castle?’
‘ - but i think we’ll have to table it, for now.’ she watches his enthusiasm fade. ‘preston, it’s a great idea, don’t get me wrong. but if there is some... giant sea monster, it doesn’t do the minutemen any good if both of us die taking back the place. train up a few more people. i’m going to clear out sunshine tidings co-op, make a few more... stops.’ she chances a gaze at deacon, sitting on the side of the road rubbing dogmeat’s belly. ‘and we’ll come back to this, okay?’
he salutes her. ‘yes, ma’am.’
whisper frowns. ‘hey.’ she gently lowers his hand from the salute. ‘i’m sorry i haven’t been around. but you and the others are doing a wonderful job here. we’ll take the castle, i just have a few loose ends to tie up before i throw myself at a sea monster.’
preston squeezes her hand. ‘yes, ma’am,’ he says again, softer.
she withdraws, slowly. ‘i should go get de-dingo. he gets restless.’ she turns to see deacon tying what looks like a third bandanna around dogmeat’s neck, to complement the small pair of welder’s goggles upon his head. preston keeps his eyes on her. ‘i’ll try to be back soon.’
he steps away. ‘stay safe, general.’

‘what do you know about the castle?’ whisper asks deacon along the way to the co-op.
‘a lot of your people - minutemen,’ he clarifies, ‘died there. it’s a mirelurk nesting ground now.’
she hums. ‘those would be the sea monsters preston mentioned, then.’ she rubs at her eyes. ‘great.’
they cross a bridge over to the co-op, weaving around abandoned cars. he helps her over a barricade as the first set of buildings looms over the hill. a short gravel path leads them up a hill into the co-op proper. wind blows heavily through the co-op, kicking up dirt from the expansive planting grounds that surround a large barn.
the puttering sound of an approaching mister handy prompts them to draw their weapons. the robot stops in front of them, seems to look them over, then, in a rough voice, says, ‘groovy,’ long, drawn-out, and airy, and floats away.
whisper lowers her gun. ‘deacon, what just happened?’
‘you take me to the best places, partner,’ he says, grinning.
in the barn, she accesses the logs on a dusty computer. ‘oh wow,’ she whispers. then laughs. ‘this was a hippie commune, pre-war. they... stole and reprogrammed a mister handy. they, uh, named him professor goodfeels. i guess that’s where the graffiti comes from.’ she waves a hand toward the wall and the painted free the robots on a piece of plywood. she turns to deacon. ‘origins of the railroad?’
she imagines he rolls his eyes at her. ‘funny. this place is... mostly quiet. wonder why no one’s picked this place back up since.’
‘you’re the intel guy.’ she pulls herself away from the terminal. ‘shall we see why?’
they see why. beginning at the first house, they explore counter-clockwise around the co-op, clearing out the feral ghouls sleeping in the buildings. in a far building, up another hill, they find the first body that isn’t a skeleton. someone else apparently had the same idea as the minutemen, but didn’t survive the ferals. the mess hall completes their circle in addition to housing another group of ferals, easily sniped through the broken windows. radio beacon up, whisper returns to the terminal.
‘what to do with the professor?’ there’s a few options listed on the terminal: return for repairs, guard protocols, and... just be.
‘i say leave him. if anything, he’s good for a laugh.’ on cue, professor goodfeels floats by with a slurred whoa man.
whisper sighs. ‘people are going to think we’re crazy.’
‘maybe that’s my plan. discredit the minutemen with beatnik mister handys.’

deacon suggests they head back to hq to see if there’s anything else that needs doing. now that the railroad has another heavy, it’s only fair they take on another job so glory can have a day off. besides, she can check in at goodneighbor along the way, see if hancock has found anything on kellogg. they head west across the commonwealth, traveling north of boston and weaving south of lexington. deacon draws her into the shadows near the corvega factory, and they pass by without incident.
that is, until the sound of gunfire brings them to the outskirts of the town. curious, whisper grabs deacon by the wrist and pulls him against the side of a building. ‘sure you want to do this?’ he asks over her shoulder. ‘looks like gunners got someone pinned down there.’
she peeks around the corner. ‘close to bunker hill, aren’t they? maybe it’s a caravan in danger.’
‘not the gunner MO, partner. behind that car.’ he points, and she sees it, a head poking out behind a rusted bumper.
whisper squints. ‘hang on. that’s - that’s maccready.’
‘the merc that hangs around goodneighbor? what’d he do to the gunners?’
‘doesn’t matter.’ she crouches, edges around the building to get closer to the gunners. a bullet whizzes past her, flying off down the road. too close. ‘deacon.’
she feels, doesn’t see, deacon’s rifle lower next to her. ‘one on the right is mine.’
whisper aims deliverer at the left gunner. near the hip, just below the plating of his combat armor. the gunners don’t notice them, too busy aiming at maccready. she counts down from three. in sync, they fire. deacon’s gunner goes down in a shower of red, head missing. hers shouts, drops his gun, and grabs at the hole in his hip. the third gunner only has a chance to look at his comrade before deacon finishes him off. her gunner falls to his knees. she finishes him off with one more quick shot.
‘you good?’ she nods, rising. he puts a hand on her shoulder, stilling her. ‘don’t be so quick to rise above cover, there. never know if there are more. or a sniper.’
she remains in her crouch, at that, his hand still on her shoulder. one moment passes. another. then, ‘boss? did i hit you?’ maccready yells, his voice growing closer. deacon releases her then, using the same hand to help her up.
‘i’m okay, maccready.’ she gestures at the dead gunners behind him. ‘this have anything to do with those two at the third rail?’
‘winlock and barnes? yeah, guess someone saw me picking around the commonwealth.’ he sighs. ‘gunners don’t like it when their people leave and start taking jobs away from them.’
‘huh,’ she says. ‘so they’re going to hound you until... what? they bring you back in?’
maccready laughs, bitter. ‘i doubt that. they’ll kill me and be done with it. i hoped to buy them out before that. get them off my back.’
‘good luck with that,’ deacon pipes up.
‘what can i do?’ she asks him.
his eyes widen in surprise. ‘what?’
‘i’m offering to help you, maccready. you already have most of my caps, though. what else can we do?’
‘i know where they’re stationed,’ he says quickly, as if she’s going to take it back. he looks between her and deacon. ‘mass pike interchange. there’s a lift up to the interchange, that’s where they’re stationed.’
‘what kind of resistance are we looking at, maccready?’ deacon eyes him.
maccready winces. ‘a dozen or more gunners, plus defensive turrets. barnes usually wears a suit of power armor.’ he pauses. ‘and an assaultron.’
‘jesus,’ deacon curses under his breath. ‘you really want to do this?’
whisper shrugs. ‘he’s in danger unless we do. i’m sorry, i know you said - ’
‘glory hates days off anyway,’ he finishes. ‘any plans?’
‘we’re three snipers,’ she says. ‘and maccready knows the layout. we hit them before they can hit us.’

Wow 13 years of Taylor Swift! I can’t really remember a time in my life without knowing Taylor Swift. Being 22 now and 9 when “Tim McGraw” came out is kind of crazy to me. At 9 years old I was going into fourth grade, my last year of elementary school. This was also the year I visited New York for the first time, which is a weird coincidence I think. Now, I have graduated college with a bachelors degree in biology, and I have proudly seen Taylor Swift 5 times. I saw her for the first time in Lexington, Kentucky for the Red Tour. Then I saw her in Nashville, Tennessee for the 1989 World Tour. Finally, I saw her three times for the Reputation Stadium Tour in Louisville, Kentucky, Columbus, Ohio, and Nashville, Tennessee.

Taylor Swift has been a big part of my life, and has been my role model since I heard her song 13 years ago. I have grown up listening to her songs, and falling in love with her lyrics. Loving and supporting her through everything. I went through some rough times during these last 13 years, and she has been there through it all. She has been there through my parents getting a divorce, heartbreak, and making memories with my best friends.
I haven’t met Taylor personally, but I feel like I know her and that she is one of my best friends. I hope to one day meet her, hug her, and tell her how important she has been in my life. This past August I was lucky enough to see her in Nashville, and she brought out Faith Hill and Tim McGraw to sing “Tim McGraw”. I was so happy that she sang that song, because that’s the song I fell in love with. I sang this in the back of my dads truck with my cousins, and sang it any time it came on the radio.
Thank you Taylor Swift for 13 years of happiness! Now that I’m 22 I am honestly happy, free, confused, and lonely in the best way! Thank you for memories I will never forget, and most importantly thank you for being you.💕

Vanity Hour with Carlos Vara: Handling the Seasons of Life

In American culture, the search for independence comes at the age of 18. For Carlos Vara, this was exceptionally true. At 18, Vara moved to Nashville in search of a life separate from the emotional cuff to his father who had previously owned nightclubs but had abruptly found religion in the small town of Lexington in South Carolina. This along with the struggle of being closeted in a small town naturally pushed Vara to search for newness in a city rich of musical history.
At 21, Vara has somewhat of a grasp on his day to day life. Bouncing back from Nashville to Los Angeles, Vara has completed his anticipated October 4th release of “Have You Ever Seen a Boy Break Down” -  an EP meant to encapsulate his past few years bouncing from season to season in the versatile chapters of his life.
“When I was a teenager on X-Factor I thought I was going to be…well I loved songwriting and I loved singing, but I didn’t necessarily know who I was at the time. I was in the closet in the suburbs and I was growing up as a preacher’s kid so there was that phase. Then there was the phase of me moving to Nashville at 18 and coming out and discovering myself and exploring the boundaries of my mind and challenging myself and my ideas… I think that phase of my life lead to the music I made at that time and now I’m in a completely separate phase…what I create now are journal entries of specific eras of my life.”
In my interview with Vara, a clear conflict arises - a conflict found in the lyricism of his past couple releases. Vara shares, “I do have experiences where I’m like out and I’m like ‘Am I this person?’…because as I said I’ve gone through so many different stages in my life.”

Vara says, “The people who knew me at 18 would think I’m this quiet shy person. It’s like imposter syndrome for yourself it’s almost like you don’t think you have the right to be this brand new version of yourself. I feel it especially because I’ve been through so many extremes but I think now I’m in a stage where I’m like ‘why can’t I just embrace every single emotion?’ ‘why can’t I just live through these phases’ they are the best parts of life and it’s freeing to be what you want to be whenever you want to be.”

Totally Vain: Your life has had clear chapters from your upbringing in North Carolina, to the X-Factor, to your time in Nashville and LA. When you look back at these past few years, how do you compare your artistic vision from then to now?
Carlos: “It’s interesting you say that because it is so true… I think …well actually I was talking about this yesterday when I was stoned with my friends that I feel like I’ve lived distinct phases of my life. I think through the process of growing up, my artistic vision and the way I think has changed. My music is always changing, depending on how my environment changes..because it stays so true to that. To me, my writing is based off my reality at the time, I will always be satisfied with it because I make music to be able to express myself and to be able to purge”
TV: Your environments have all had very distinct setbacks and advantages, how have they affected you in relation to the music industry?
Carlos: “I remember being a kid and watching TV and award shows and listening to music in the car…I knew I had a passion for music but being in South Carolina meant I didn’t have an uncle who was an executive, or any relation to the industry itself. I didn’t see anyone who had come out of South Carolina, all I saw was people coming from New York or Los Angeles so I just never had that hope. Senior year of high school I moved to Nashville by myself and finished graduating online. I was working restaurant jobs. I worked so many restaurants from 18 until last year before I got signed. I think that moving to Nashville was the first time in my life when I felt like I had some possibility to make it. Thank God for Instagram and Spotify and Apple music. I think that really became a way for me to connect to people who appreciate music the same way I do and connect to artists as far as co-writes. Especially in Nashville since it is a songwriting community, it definitely helped when it came to writing. Moving there was the first time I was able to discover who I am as an artist and figure myself out, retain my thoughts and grow up and figure out what I believe and have the opportunity to collaborate with people around me.”
TV: An overarching idea in your releases is confidence, both the reaction to confidence and personal self-confidence, from where do you think that idea stems from? And what kind of conflicts or internal struggles do you still have?
Carlos: “My friends know me as a very extreme person meaning I truly feel every emotion I have. I’m either going fucking crazy at a party or I’m like I want to go home. There is no in-between. I feel like for me since I am so emotional, I tend to feel it all at once and songwriting allowed me to be able to go home at 2 A.M. and smoke and just sit at the piano and play whatever is on my mind. I think it’s a way of me being able to work through any struggles I may have and for me to fully comprehend those emotions and see it as a full picture…for instance, I am extroverted but I’m sensitive and insecure so those feelings are both there at the same time. I mean it. I’ll be at a party being the loudest one there and thinking everyone hates me so it’s like I think that when I write, I want to be able to capture what that feels like. When I wrote “Confident,” I was in LA for the summer and it was my first time being out here for a super extended period of time and I had just turned 21 so I was able to get into all the gay clubs and it was exciting but it was stressful. I wanted to appear like I was cool and kept up with everyone but I just remember going to a club and being like shwasted and like going home and crying in the Uber. I’m just out here pretending to be confident and I was mad at myself and angry at myself for faking confidence and I went home and wrote a few lines for “Confident.” I think from an outside perspective people think I’m this super confident boisterous person and I guess I am but internally it’s rooted to a lot of sadness because I am freaking out inside.”
TV: Who were the artists who spoke to you the most growing up and what did you pull from in their work that you apply to your own?
Carlos: “I think of it in phases. My mom had me when she was 21 so at that time my mom only listened to pop radio and like Christina and Britney, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston all these pop vocals and also my parents owned nightclubs so I was always surrounded by an energetic musical atmosphere. Around age seven, my parents became more religious and my dad became a pastor we went to a church with a big African American community so they were soulful in their gospel and that’s when I allowed myself to become more emotional with my music and I wanted to create to provoke emotion. When I was 16/17, I went online and I discovered the things I wouldn’t normally have access to like the Beatles and the Beach Boys and Queen and Freddie. Those three eras, have all formed me today. I don’t know if I have one specific source of inspiration but it was a melting pot for sure.”
TV: As you’ve been coming to find an artistic persona, what have you found your overarching message to be?
Carlos: “I want to always be real to myself as an artist. Growing up I was always the weird kid and I never felt that I had someone I could relate to. Now I feel I’ve been blessed to have been able to reach out to kids that feel that same way I felt and I want to make music whether it be a fast fun bop or an emotional ballad, I want the music to be passionate and dramatic and I want to be a part of the world in that way, I want to create. It’s a spiritual thing, it comes out and I know how it makes me feel and I hope that when other people hear my EP, I want them to be able to feel that emotion and have a small escape or a meaningful feeling.”
TV: Can you give me a little breakdown on what kind of lyricism and sounds we can expect from your upcoming EP?
Carlos: “The cool thing about this EP is I was able to create both in Nashville and in Los Angeles. Living in Nashville, it is very much a lyric community and in Los Angeles, there is more of an emphasis on melodies, so it’s been cool and inspiring to have access to both. For me, this EP embodies real lyricism and dramatic melodies. It’s a real and vulnerable introduction to who I am and what these past 3 years of my life have been like.”

CD Review: Flogging Molly - Life Is Good

Genre: celtic punk
Okay, I wasn’t going to add this, but then I remembered the days when I used to listen to “Shipping Up To Boston” on repeat, and the nostalgia compelled me. That said, I think it’s general knowledge that Flogging Molly is “better” (read: less agro) than Dropkick Murphys, but both deal in the same celtic-influenced, string-section-led, high energy punk that you’d probably hear when you order a Guinness in Boston. It’s not all great, and the tracks that sacrifice some of the energy to make more of a political point (8’s Jericho referencing) suffer for it, but when FM is on, they’re on, whether it’s the slower, ending-credits feel of 7 and 10, the faster pace of 11 and 3 (the latter about a dying boomtown, one of the political songs that works), or the three-movements-in-four-minutes of 2. Yeah, it’s a bit cheesy, but the protein is probably good for you. Probably.
