Today Apple was honored by the Royal Television Society Craft & Design Awards with nine nominations for critically acclaimed hit series including “Prehistoric Planet,” narrated by Emmy Award winner Sir David Attenborough; “Bad Sisters,” from BAFTA Award-winning filmmaker Sharon Horgan; “The Essex Serpent,” starring Emmy Award winner Claire Danes and Emmy Award nominee Tom Hiddleston; Slow Horses,” starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman; and season three of the heartwarming drama “Trying.”

New Kid by Jerry Craft

Targeted Age: 3rd to 6th graders

Quick plot synopsis: Twelve-year-old Jordan Banks is less than enthused about going to his new school. As one of the few students of color at the distinguished private academy, Jordan learns to navigate the struggles that come with class and racial differences.

Why I chose New Kid: New Kid won a Coretta Scott King Award in 2020, which celebrates Black authors and illustrators of youth literature. In addition, Craft’s graphic novel also won a Newbery Award in the same year. Jordan’s story is presented realistically, showing the reader both the highs and the lows of being a young Black boy in a predominantly white school. This book has unfortunately faced numerous bans/challenges over the past year. A ban near me, at Katy Independent School District of Katy, Texas, made national headlines for alleging that New Kid violated Texas law. This censorship is concerning, as Jordan’s story is important and stifling this book only makes kids like him feel more alienated than they already are.

Evaluation:

As a graphic novel, visual representations of the character, story, and setting are integral to New Kid. We see Riverdale Day Academy through Jordan’s eyes, both his actual experiences and his interpretations in his own sketchbook. The connections between the two give depth to Jordan’s character. His humor and emotions are easy to see in his own personal sketchbook, but they also appear in the full color “real life” parts of the text. For example, background characters move and behave like zombies on the first day of school and when Jordan’s parents argue, Jordan is represented as a baby sitting between them (Craft, 2019). Additionally, the exaggerations and caricatures in Craft’s artsyle enhance the awkwardness of the situations Jordan finds himself in. Through Craft’s illustrations, the reader is right alongside Jordan for every high and every low.

New Kid is full of wit, humor, and well-placed allusions. Each chapter heading references another popular media. For example, “Chapter 2 The Road to Riverdale - There and Back Again” is a reference to The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. The illustration supports this, with a map that evokes J.R.R. Tolkien’s own style (Craft, 2019, p. 16-17). The humor of the story often pokes fun at the unfortunate behavior of Jordan’s teachers and peers. On page 129, the school librarian recommends a book to Maury, another Black student. She asserts that he’ll relate to the fatherless, poor main character only to be told “Thanks, Miss Brickner, but my dad is the CEO of a Fortune 500 company” (Craft, 2019). The humor apparent in the school librarian’s mistake points out how absurd similar behaviors can be.

Insights into the very real problem of seemingly “harmless” interactions that are actually racist are a major focus of New Kid. Throughout the book, incorrect assumptions are constantly made to the detriment of students of color at Riverdale. Craft uses these insights to encourage the reader to consider similar problems faced by themselves or their peers. All of Craft’s scenes are well thought out and poignant. One in particular stuck out to me— when Jordan’s white teacher insists that he should be happy to be different, he asks if she’d teach in his predominantly Black neighborhood so she could feel special too (Craft, 2019, p. 221). This scene challenges the idea that white society should be seen as a "reward" for people of color.

Do I recommend it?: Definitely! Jordan’s story offers a mirror for kids like him, and a window for others. His experience is true to life and is told with humor and kindness throughout. New Kid can (and should) be enjoyed by anyone of any age.

Believing that my hobbies are not just as it is

#A.W.A.R.D.S.- These 6- lettered acronym would just speak for itself... How I see my hobbies as something that would turn into something big and not just the things that I love to do but the dreams that I really wanted to pursue...

#1) A-cting

From having 'Idols' that I really look up to especially in the field of acting, singing and dancing, I could say that I really understand the feeling of being a FANGIRL. Seeing my favorite artists on tv and giving their best at acting out either comedy, romantic or heart warming scenes always leads me back to my first dream job; being an actress. But though I know now that it's not that easy to fit myself in that industry, I still embrace my interest and love for acting by challenging myself to play different roles in school plays and theater shows. Who knows? Maybe it's not yet too late for me to dreammmmm ;)

#2) W-riting

I just looove writing. Making poems, writing songs, creating stories, even doodling and drawing. Wherever I go, I just cannot lose a pen in my pocket, while the oaky smell and possessed roughness of pulped woods that were crafted into thin pieces of papers gave me thrills and nothing more that I could ever ask for. Every single day that I lived, from the days that I learned how to write the ABC, I just felt that this fits me. Writing had been my friend where I can express my feelings, share my thoughts, funny secrets and pointless jokes. There are a lot of people who cannot write and it saddens me for I believe that they would have loved it to. If only they could also feel that enjoyment that writing brings me, and for the the people that can write but merely cannot see its beauty, I just wonder... how fun all we could be with just a pen a good stationery. :)

#3) A-rt crafting

Growing up with an older brother that I can say is as great as the greatest artists ever known, because of his skills in drawing, painting, art craftings and more, I also get interested in these stuffs. As I encounter more performance tasks in Art subjects through my schooling, I have loved bringing the best of my creativity in every projects that I craft. Well, nothing more is better than seeing your outputs hanging on the wall of your classroom or when my teacher gets to display my works on the top shelf. ^-^

#4) R-eading

Reading is a place where one could find a home. An adventure of possibilities and reeling full of hope... This is how i see reading for I don't just find it as my hobby, but also a friend, like writing that takes me to another world as I jump onto another book, and see all the world at its darkest and brightest perspectives. I'll surely continue reading through and through and I hope it would be everyone's happy place too! (:

#5) D-ancing

I wanted to be a ballerina. I've dreamt to be a theater performer. I hoped to be a trapeze woman, and day dreamed about being a tap dancer. How I love dancing is just as how I love traveling. It takes me to other places, planets, universe, or just as many dimensions that I imagined from living this colorful art. I love dancing and it was just that ineffable to be showed in the words I utter. Every point of my feet, every glance that I meet, any glitch from those beats, everytime, I still broke into bits. I cannot say that I am really good at this but the happiness it suits me is enough to be listed in my hobbies. =)

#6) S-inging

Regardless of every twists and turns or ups and downs of my cracking voice, I still continue singing and singing through the welcoming melodies of my favorite musics. Whether it be jazz or theatrical, or may it be rock and punk, it's just that hard to figure out why it just brings the best out of me. Though it already had the lyrics where I'll just have to sing along, I still get to express my feelings and relate to every word that's been marked in every songs I sing. After all, as said in a song, "I ask it all honesty, what would life be without a song?"... and so I just lived and loved singing more. >_<
