Katarina Waters To Compete in ROH Women's World Title Tournament

Katarina Waters has won championships around the globe, and now she is headed to Ring of Honor looking to add another title to her resume.

She brings two decades worth of experience to the tournament to crown a new ROH Women’s World Champion. She joins previously announced competitors Nicole Savoy, Suumie Sakai, Angelina Love, and Kellyanne. The 16-woman tournament kicks off with eight first-round matches at Quest For Gold in Philadelphia on April 24th.

Born in Germany before relocating to England, Katarina is a two-time former Knockouts Champion, having defeated Mickie James both times to win the title. She is also a former TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champion, a title she won alongside fellow ROH wrestler Angelina Love.

After beginning her career in the UK, Katarina traveled to France in 2005 and won the World Queen of Chaos Championship in a Rumble match against competition from all over the world. She successfully defended the title in France and Switzerland for 387 days before relinquishing it to sign with WWE.

While competing on a show co-promoted by ROH and Frontier Wrestling Alliance in London in 2003, Katarina made waves in a six-person hardcore match by diving off the balcony.

Some feuds are born so naturally that they don’t require much thought, and this is certainly one of those feuds. When CM Punk, the Straight Edge Superstar, came to prominence in Ring Of Honor, his adversary was born out of a former admiration turned to pure disdain. Raven became a mainstay at ROH, and the punk rock kid who grew up thinking he was alone had followed Raven for much of his career, seeing something of a guiding light in the leader of The Flock. However, Raven’s issues with substance abuse turned CM Punk away from him, with such brutal force that a feud was born out of pure hatred: Punk’s for Raven’s downfall, and Raven’s for Punk’s expectations. After spending half a year brawling from New Jersey to Florida and everywhere inbetween, the two met in a steel cage known as the Clockwork Orange House Of Fun, which was filled with everything- even the kitchen sink (pictured)! Though the match was brutal as expected, the feud wouldn’t end until March of 2004, when CM Punk defeated Raven at FWA’s New Frontiers.

Six Yoko Kanno Projects We Don't Talk About Enough

May 18 marks the birthday of Yoko Kanno, one of anime's most celebrated composers and musicians. Even if you're fairly new to anime or don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of composers' names, you've likely heard something by Kanno at least once. Her innovative tunes fill shows like Cowboy Bebop, The Vision of Escaflowne, and multiple series of Macross, just to name a few.

For her birthday, it would be easy to reminisce just about her more famous works. Instead, though, we've decided to take a look at earlier and lesser-known places she's popped up in the anime world. Maybe you're already aware of some of these. Maybe they're new to you. Or maybe you sensed a familiar sound when you listened to these tunes or soundtracks.

Nobunaga's Ambition Game Series: Composer

In 1983, video game developer Koei released a game written entirely in BASIC, casting the player as one of Japan's legendary feudal lords and guiding through through various historical events. Three years later, a second game was released—the first to make its way outside Japan. This iteration of Nobunaga's Ambition has received ports for everything from the NES to iOS.

The second game was also Yoko Kanno's entry into the series. She would end up composing music for five of the franchise's games. This was one of her earliest gigs, preceded by a turn-based game based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms (also from Keio). If you can get your hands on a copy of the soundtrack, it's an interesting listen. Considering it's an early, simple game release, she had all of one instrument to work with!

Please Save My Earth: Composer (with Hajime Mizoguchi)

Before The Vision of Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop, Kanno worked on the score for the OVA adaptation of Saki Hiwatari's Please Save My Earth. The popular shojo manga focused on a group of seven young people—six high school kids and a seven-year-old—who all had similar dreams about a group of scientists on the moon observing Earth. The seven new (or, rather, old) acquaintances seek to figure out what the dreams mean, all while attempting not to let these memories overshadow their current lives.

Kanno composed the score alongside her husband, Hajime Mizoguchi (Jin-Roh). The two would later work together on other projects, including Escaflowne and Macross Plus.

Cardcaptor Sakura: "Platinum"

In 1999, Kanno teamed up with two regular collaborators to create "Platinum," the third OP of the original Cardcaptor Sakura. Lyricist Yuho Iwasato worked with her on Macross Frontier, the Escaflowne movie, and several other titles.

Joining them was voice actress and singer Maaya Sakamoto, notable (in addition to her own career) for her many collaborations with Kanno before and since. She appeared as Hitomi in the Escaflowne TV series and film and went on to sing the first opening to Macross Frontier and take a small role in the series proper. "Platinum" was Sakamoto's sixth single, and reached #21 on the Oricon weekly charts. She followed it up not long after with "Yubiwa"—also written by Kanno and Iwasato—from the Escaflowne movie.

Jin-Roh: Pianist

Kanno and Mizoguchi worked together again on the film Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. The military sci-fi thriller created by Mamoru Oshii featured a score by the latter, who also sat in on cello. The rest of the band consists of familiar names, including bassist Hitoshi Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Kids on the Slope), keyboardist Keishi Urata (sound architect for Akira), conductor Mario Klemens of the Warsaw Philharmonic... and Kanno, who played piano for the group.

Hearing Kanno play is always a treat, whether it's for one of her own compositions or elsewhere. Jin-Roh features plenty of piano solos in its soundtrack, so we have lots of chances to listen to her throughout.

Ring of Gundam: Composer

Kanno is no stranger to the Gundam franchise. She served as composer for 1999's Turn A Gundam and both its films. When it came time to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary in 2009, she was back on board for a new short project.

The CGI film Ring of Gundam was based on an unused script by series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. The five-minute film takes place in a new era long after the events of the original series, and tells only minimal parts of a much bigger story. Earth Federation pilot Eiji teams up with Yuria, a young woman from this era's Ring Colony orbiting the moon, to find a data cache called Beauty Memory. But to unlock its data, he must obtain "Amuro's Legacy." The short film contains only a few minutes of music, but it's still got that epic Kanno sound to it!

Space Dandy: Featured Composer

There are there things Shinichiro Watanabe really seems to like: outer space, cool music, and revisiting previous collaborations. We're getting all three with this year's Carole & Tuesday, and we definitely got that in 2014's Space Dandy.

More than a dozen musicians and composers were brought in to work on the Space Dandy soundtrack, Kanno amongst them. She arranged the ending theme for the first season, as well as an insert song for episode 5. "Shiritai" as a collaboration with rapper Izumi Makura. Kanno was back again for the show's second season.

You can also hear Taku Takahashi, KenKen, and many more in the show's soundtrack.

This is just scratching the surface of Kanno's work outside her better-known projects. She's also composed tunes for SMAP and the aforementioned Maaya Sakamoto, written music for live-action TV and film, and penned tunes for commercials. Then there's work for associated bands, and that whole "Gabriela Robin" thing... in short, she's a busy lady with a lot of compositions under her belt.

New world news from Time: Kim Jong Un Begins ‘Writing a New History’ as the First North Korean Leader to Visit the South

There was a cheeriness redolent of a family reunion when the leaders of North and South Korea met for denuclearization talks at the peninsula’s demilitarized zone (DMZ) on Friday, shaking hands across the frontier before Kim Jong Un made history by stepping over the raised concrete slab marking the border to become his dynastic regime’s first ever leader to visit the South.

Then Kim, a portly vision of black in a Mao-style suit and horn-rimmed glasses, invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to hop back across to North Korea, the land from where his refugee parents fled to the South on an U.N. supply ship during the 1950-53 Korean War. The two leaders then crossed once again to the South, hand-in-hand, before sitting down to negotiations at the DMZ’s Peace House.

“I feel like I’m firing a flare at the starting line of writing a new history in North-South relations, peace and prosperity,” Kim told Moon as they sat at a round table that had been specially installed in for the summit. Moon replied that there were high expectations for the leaders to thrash out a “big gift to the entire Korean nation and every peace loving person in the world.”

For Moon, reaching this point has been a lifelong ambition. He helped broker the last summit between the leaders of North and South, 11 years ago, when he was chief of staff to then South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun. Now Moon has the top job and is charged with persuading Kim to give up his nuclear weapons and a hawkish Donald Trump administration to invest the time and energy ink a deal acceptable to all parties. A White House statement expressed hope “that talks will achieve progress toward a future of peace and prosperity for the entire Korean Peninsula,” and that Trump was looking forward to meeting Kim himself in coming weeks.

As expected, the summit was meticulously choreographed and full of symbolism. An honor guard of Korean soldiers in bright traditional war robes welcomed the leaders, during which Kim appeared slightly uneasy, panting heavily. But he appeared in fine fettle once the leaders and their traveling delegations — seven from South Korea; nine from the North, including Kim’s influential sister — sat down for discussions on chairs marked with a map of a united Korea. Kim even ribbed Moon about North Korean noodles being popular in the South. He also said he was “willing to go to [South Korea’s Presidential] Blue House at any time” if invited, according to Moon’s spokesman.

But if the symbolism was laid on a little thick, it was perhaps because substantive outcomes were limited. North Korea is subject to strict new U.N. sanctions following its escalating missile and nuclear tests, meaning Moon alone has little power to offer economic inducements. Even a formal end to the Korean War, which Moon has mooted, would be hollow unless the U.S. was also party. (The nations technically remain at war as an armistice rather than peace treaty was signed.)

“Serious discussion about denuclearization is simply impossible because this is not so much an issue of South Korea, but rather an issue of the United States,” Andrei Lankov, professor of Korean studies at Seoul’s Kookmin University, told South Korea’s Arirang TV. “South Korea should push the United States towards accepting a compromise.”

Before the summit, Kim had already promised to end missile launches and dismantle his Punggye-ri nuclear testing site. During discussions Friday, he joked to Moon that he “would not interrupt your early morning sleep anymore,” referring to his typically daybreak weapons tests. But few believe North Korea will truly dispense of its nuclear arsenal after decades spent honing it. Late last year, the regime tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICMB) it claims could strike anywhere in the continental U.S.

“Let’s take denuclearization off the table — isn’t going to happen,” says Christopher Green, a senior researcher on the Korean Peninsula for the International Crisis Group. “But North Korea may be attempting to make a serious change of direction whilst also retaining a nuclear weapon.”

While the lives of the 25 million ordinary North Koreas are largely irrelevant for Kim, he does rely on the backing of 2 million-odd elites, who mainly live in Pyongyang and are growing increasingly dissatisfied with the direction of the nation, according to South Korean intelligence. “They’re not sure that the state will survive, but more than that they don’t feel like their children have too many opportunities for the future,” says Green.

Satisfying Trump enough to ease the sanctions and allow North Korea to prosper will not be easy. While China and the U.S. agreed last year that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula should be “complete, verifiable and irreversible,” North Korea likely has a different interpretation — one “to revolve around decreasing the saliency of nuclear and missile tests in its diplomacy, rather than the complete, verifiable and irreversible disarmament desired by the West,” writes Karl Dewey, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense analyst for Jane’s by IHS Markit.

Kim’s announcement of the dismantlement of Punggye-ri has been tempered by reports from Chinese geologists that it had already collapsed, possibly resulting in significant radiation poisoning. At any rate, its closure could simply mean North Korean engineers are satisfied with the design of their nuclear devices and thus no longer need to test, or that a second facility could be set up were further refinement required.

The challenge facing Moon is to keep the Trump administration engaged, even if the goalposts shift significantly from total disarmament. Trump’s hawkish pick for Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and new National Security Adviser John Bolton have repeatedly insisted that military options remain on the table, despite the utter devastation that could be wrought on South Korea and Japan by Pyongyang’s conventional, chemical and nuclear retaliation.

Lankov worries that the Trump-Kim summit “might not happen or might end in disaster,” because “there is always a possibility that at the last moment President Trump will listen to some of his advisers who will tell him nothing but full and immediate nuclear denuclearization is acceptable.”

Moon entertaining Kim was the easy part. Keeping Trump ameliorable and on message at the next summit is when the true work will begin.
