6/4/21; Week 07; Response to “Differences in Manners”
Etiquette. It exists in our lives as a sort of social code that helps us understand how we should and should not act. It tells us what sorts of things we can and cannot or should not do in our interactions with others. It creates definitions for what is rude and what is polite. However, there is just one stipulation: etiquette may vary depending on culture. In other words, what may be okay in one culture may not be okay in another culture. Just because Grandma Jane loves to give hugs does not mean that you should hug your friend's Grandma who is from the Middle East. People may view the same thing two very different ways. When you encounter these clashes in etiquette or behavior it can be helpful to ask questions such as, “Why do people in this culture react this way?” or “What is the significance of doing this in that culture? Where did it all start?” As you do so, you may begin to learn the culture behind the culture and develop a greater understanding of why your students behave the way they do. With this greater understanding you can then help students engage in self reflection and critical questioning as to those behaviors that may be detrimental to their self-esteem. As a teacher, being patient, slow to judge, and assuming your students mean well will help you as you discover the cultural differences in etiquette between your students.
