Total Customer Service

My hotel famously caters to the whims of each and every guest, so I thought I'd highlight the insights of some of my staff. My "unique" recruitment process has helped me acquire an army of hard-working uniforms who are guaranteed to serve! Hopefully, this glimpse will make you want to book a visit...

(Josh) The Bellhop

I love this job, but sometimes it kills my back! Who would've thought that being a porter would wear down my body more than hard labor ever did? Don't get me wrong: I'll gladly work here forever, but most of my days aren't a walk in the park. Honestly, none of them are.

When I was a construction worker, I got paid to be outside and occasionally hammer in a nail or two. My crew was pretty notorious for just standing around all day. We were doing that when my current boss approached us. I don't remember exactly what he said, but before I knew it, we were dropping our tool belts and hardhats and following him back to the hotel!

He hired me as a bellboy, so now I offer any guest the service of lugging their suitcases up to their rooms. Since I'm just staff, I obviously can't use the elevators, (those are reserved for the guests) so I carry their things up the service stairs in the back of the building. The temperature in the stairwell is always hot as hell, so I rarely end a shift without sweating through the pits of my uniform jacket. It sucks, but the AC is saved for spaces that make guests more comfortable.

Most of the customers are pleased to see me working so hard anyway. I'm usually panting by the time I deliver their luggage to their rooms. I'll always offer to unpack their things: it's a part of the hotel's five-star service.

Then I wait and see if they need anything else from me. A lot of times, I'm the first employee the guests are able to interact with, so they're usually pretty excited to take advantage of the "all-inclusive" service our hotel is famous for.

Some of them are shy about it at first and some of them are demanding from the get-go, but I'm always happy to do whatever they ask. Even if I don't particularly like what I have to do: it's just a part of the job...I love this job...I love my boss...I love that this work is my life...

(Bill) The Housekeeper

Part of me cringes every time I get a look of myself in a mirror. Sure, I'm proud to be a housekeeper, but it's a real change of pace from back when I was a financial advisor. Part of me is nervous to think I could run into someone from my old life: a former colleague or an old customer perhaps. I'd still clean their room the same of course, but I can't help but wonder what they'd think of me while I did it.

I used to manage the hotel owner's finances. That's how we met. He persuaded me to grow his hotel as much as I could. It became an obsession of mine, and I'll have to admit that I tossed all my other customers to the side to focus on him. It was a bit out of character for me. I'm not really sure why I did that. Anyway, I was spending so much time at his hotel instead of my office that he offered me a job.

I can't recall his pitch, but it must have been a convincing one, because I dialed up my old former boss and quit. I just didn't want it anymore! It didn't even bother me that the only vacant position was in housekeeping!

I took it immediately.

I love cleaning up the messes our guests leave behind. Thinking about that is what gets me out of bed everyday, which is no easy feat since my shift starts at four in the morning. No matter how messy, gross, or bizarrely sticky a room is, I just love to get on my hands and knees and scrub every inch for them.

The best part is when a guest comes back to their room to find me making their bed or cleaning their shower. I can tell they're always pleasantly surprised to find me there.

I just keep my head lowered submissively like I'm supposed to and wait for them to take charge. They always do. Here at the hotel, us employees are completely at the customer's whim. I'll do anything they tell me to...I want to make them happy...I want to serve them...I want to obey.

(Donavon) The Waiter

Who knew waiting could create such awful migraines. I work in the hotel bar, and every day is a new storm of hungry and entitled mouths. Each table has someone who isn't happy with their meal, and they love to express their discontent in the most ridiculous ways. Sometimes it's a glass of water in my face. Sometimes it's a slap on the ass, but it's always followed by a roar of laughter!

Usually, every guest in the restaurant joins in like it's all one sick joke.

I'm not used to being treated this way. I used co-own a nearby gym, and I always made it my mission to foster a welcoming culture of respect and familiarity. I know "the customer is always right," but sometimes it is a hard fact to swallow.

The hotel's owner helped me learn that. He approached me one night at the gym and pulled out this weird swinging medallion...

I don't remember much of what he said, but I knew I had to abandon my gym. I left my wife too. We were happy, but I couldn't work here and have other commitments.

That's how I got started waiting tables. I'd never done it before, but it's not hard when I'm constantly being told what to do. Between the customers and the boss, I spend the entire day running around fulfilling orders; table six wants more wine, table nine wants their food cut for them, table twelve wants a foot rub... you get the picture.

It's all pretty typical stuff for a restaurant, I think. The customers get full control over me and the rest of the wait staff. However, it does make serving food a little difficult at times. Last night, we had to work overtime because this one guy kept making full use of us waiters. A good chunk of my evening was spent under his table, so I had to sprint afterwards to catch up on everyone's food.

It might stress me out, but I try not to let it bother me. I'll put up with their abuse and treat them with the utmost respect like a good waiter should. I don't mind being groped and fondled by virtually every customer as I pass. Part of our service is complete access to the staff. They can do whatever they want to me...they can have me do whatever they want...they deserve that treatment...I'm meant to give them that treatment...

(Ricardo) The Kitchen Staff

This job sucks. It's the truth, but I don't think I'll ever leave. The kitchens are so steamy and uncomfortable that I constantly think about walking out and getting a breath of fresh air. Still, my hands keep scrubbing countertops and chopping vegetables.

Sometimes I think of my life before I worked at this hotel, back when I was just an aimless twenty year old hanging out at the gas station. I had so much free time then. Now, I spend every waking moment in this sauna of a kitchen getting splashed with grease and oil.

Everything changed when that stranger came up to me and my buds one day. He talked really slow and dangled this weird necklace in front of our eyes. If I didn't know any better, I might think he was trying to hypnotize us!

Obviously, that's not what happened.

He was just offering us work. He made me realize how much I needed to work. I have to do this job! I need it! All my buddies agreed too. Some of them had jobs, but they didn't mind. It's been awhile since I saw them since I'm stuck down here in the kitchen. I think one of them might be a pool boy or something? I don't remember. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's more enjoyable than washing dishes down here.

The only break we get is when a customer comes in the kitchen.

One of them burst through the doors last night. We could all tell he'd had too much to drink, but that didn't change how we treated him. Like always, me and the rest of the staff stopped what we were doing and straightened our backs out of respect. He stumbled around, licking his lips as he looked us up and down. He wasn't afraid of groping us, which any guest is more than entitled to do.

Eventually, he got to me, burping in my face before covering my mouth with his slobbery lips. I'm not gay and he had a rank odor of beer on his breath, but I wasn't going to tell a customer no!

Before long, he was ordering me on the floor and crawling on top of me. The other chefs and kitchen staff got back to work, but I was left with the responsibility of keeping the guest entertained. I'd describe it as gross more than anything. I think he might've even pissed himself, but an order is an order.

His demands were the ridiculous kind only a drunk ass would make. Still, I did everything: no matter how uncomfortable, sick, or degrading they were. That's just the expectation for employees at this hotel...we are here to serve them... I'm here to serve them...I am at their whim.

...so now you understand.

My hotel is famous for its "uniquely unlimited" customer service. Stay here and you'll always be right. You'll always have someone to pick on, laugh at, play with, or use.

Get familiar with anyone that catches your eye. I can assure you that all of my employees are handsome and thoroughly conditioned. Order the waiter to pour your food over his head; tell the housekeeper to do a little dance; command the bellhop turn around and bend over. They'll do it all, and they'll thank you for it.

The actor Lou Gossett Jr, who has died aged 87, is best known for his performance in An Officer and A Gentleman (1982) as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, whose tough training transforms recruit Richard Gere into the man of the film’s title. He was the first black winner of an Academy Award for best supporting actor, and only the third black actor (after Hattie McDaniel and Sidney Poitier) to take home any Oscar.

The director, Taylor Hackford, said he cast Gossett in a role written for a white actor, following a familiar Hollywood trope played by John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Victor McLaglen or R Lee Ermey, because while researching he realised the tension of “black enlisted men having make-or-break control over whether white college graduates would become officers”. Gossett had already won an Emmy award playing a different sort of mentor, the slave Fiddler who teaches Kunta Kinte the ropes in Roots (1977), but he was still a relatively unknown 46-year-old when he got his breakthrough role, despite a long history of success on stage and in music as well as on screen.

Born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, Louis was the son of Helen (nee Wray), a nurse, and Louis Sr, a porter. As a child he suffered from polio, but became a high school athlete before a basketball injury led to his joining the drama club. His teacher encouraged him to audition professionally, and at 17 he was on Broadway playing a troubled child in Take a Giant Step, which won him a Donaldson award for best newcomer.

He won a drama scholarship to New York University, but continued working, in The Desk Set (1955), and made his television debut in two episodes of the NBC anthology show The Big Story. In 1959 he was cast with Poitier and Ruby Dee in Raisin in the Sun, and made his film debut reprising his role in 1961. On Broadway that year he played in Jean Genet’s The Blacks, in an all-star cast with James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Roscoe Lee Brown, Godfrey Cambridge and a young Maya Angelou; it was the decade’s longest-running show.

Gossett was also active in the Greenwich Village folk music scene. He released his first single Hooka Dooka, Green Green in 1964, followed by See See Rider, and co-wrote the anti-war hit Handsome Johnny with Richie Havens. In 1967 he released another single, a drums and horns version of Pete Seeger’s anti-war hymn Where Have All the Flowers Gone. He was in the gospel musical Tambourines to Glory (1963) and in producer Mike Todd’s America, Be Seated at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

His plays became more limited: The Zulu and the Zayda and My Sweet Charlie; the very short run of Carry Me Back to Morningside Heights, in which he played a black man owning a white slave; and a revival of Golden Boy (1964), with Sammy Davis Jr. His final Broadway part was as the murdered Congolese leader Patrice Lamumba, in Conor Cruise O’Brien’s Murderous Angels (1971). Gossett had played roles in New York-set TV series such as The Naked City, but he began to make a mark in Hollywood, despite LAPD officers having handcuffed him to a tree, on “suspicion”, in 1966.

On TV he starred in The Young Rebels (1970-71) set in the American revolution. In film, he was good as a desperate tenant in Hal Ashby’s Landlord (1970) and brilliant with James Garner in Skin Game (1971), taking part in a con trick in which Garner sells him repeatedly into slavery then helps him to escape.

In 1977, alongside Roots, he attracted attention as a memorable villain in Peter Yates’s hit The Deep, and got artistic revenge on the LAPD in Robert Aldrich’s The Choirboys. The TV movie of The Lazarus Syndrome (1979) became a series in which Gossett played a realistic hospital chief of staff set against an idealistic younger doctor. He played the black baseball star Satchel Paige in the TV movie Don’t Look Back (1981); years later he had a small part as another Negro League star, Cool Papa Bell, in The Perfect Game (2009).

After his Oscar, he played another assassinated African leader, in the TV mini-series Sadat, reportedly approved for the role by Anwar Sadat’s widow Jihan. Though he remained a busy working actor, good starring roles in major productions eluded him, as producers fell back on his drill sergeant image. He was Colonel “Chappy” Sinclair in Iron Eagle (1986) and its three dismal sequels.

But in 1989 he starred in Dick Wolf’s TV series Gideon Oliver, as an anthropology professor solving crimes in New York. And he won a best supporting actor Golden Globe for his role in the TV movie The Josephine Baker Story (1991). He revisited the stage in the film adaptation of Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class (1994).

Gossett twice received the NAACP’s Image Award, and another Emmy for producing a children’s special, In His Father’s Shoes (1997). In 2006 he founded the Eracism Foundation, providing programmes to foster “cultural diversity, historical enrichment and anti-violence initiatives”. Despite an illness eventually linked to toxic mould in his Santa Monica home, he kept working with a recurring part in Stargate SG-1 (2005-06). A diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2010 hardly slowed him down.

Most recently, he played Will “Hooded Justice” Reeves in the TV series Watchmen (2019), in the series Kingdom Business, about the gospel music industry, and in the 2023 musical remake of The Color Purple.

His first marriage, to Hattie Glascoe, in 1967, was annulled after five months; his second, to Christina Mangosing, lasted for two years from 1973; and his third, to Cyndi (Cynthia) James, from 1987 to 1992. He is survived by two sons, Satie, from his second marriage, and Sharron, from his third.

Endemic low pay represents a threat to the very future of the NHS, the head of the biggest union representing health staff has warned ahead of an expected wave of strike action this winter.

Strike action over pay seemed “inevitable”, said Christina McAnea, the general secretary of Unison, even though a formal ballot of staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only opens later this month, while the process is ongoing in Scotland.

Unison was likely to coordinate with other unions in the NHS to increase the impact of any stoppages, and could also liaise with strikers in other sectors such as transport, she warned.

It came as the head of the Unite union, Sharon Graham, predicted on Sunday that up to 1 million people in various areas could soon be on strike at once.

Speaking to reporters before the Trades Union Congress conference that begins in Brighton on Tuesday, McAnea, whose union represents more than 400,000 health staff including nurses, cleaners, porters and administrators, said workers felt there was no other way to get their message across.

“It’s this core of the NHS, the registered professional staff, who are telling us they just can’t survive on the pay levels they’ve got,” she said.

While healthcare is devolved across the UK, NHS staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, excluding doctors and dentists whose pay is assessed separately, have been offered a pay rise of £1,400 a year.

For many staff such as nurses this amounted to about 4%, McAnea said, compared with an inflation rate of close to 10%. Even for lower-paid staff the lump sum was a pay rise of little more than 7%, she said.

“Strikes are inevitable,” she said. “And strikes are a symptom of things going wrong. It’s not a coordinated political campaign to bring down the government. We bring our members out on strike when we reach the point where there’s no other alternative.”

Low pay has been identified as a key reason for NHS staff shortages, with more than a quarter of trusts in England operating food banks for staff. Asked if pay represented an existential threat to the health service if not addressed, McAnea said it did.

“One of the big problems we’ve got with the NHS is the turnover of staff. They can’t recruit staff at a load of grades now,” she said. “The retail sector and Amazon are paying more in some areas. And no disrespect to people who work in retail or in Amazon warehouses, but I think that’s a less stressful job.

“I’m not a great one for conspiracy theories. But I do wonder if this is a deliberate policy, to run down the NHS so much so they can turn round and say, look, it’s failing, let’s bring in some private companies. I think the British public would oppose that, but it’s kind of happening by stealth.”

Stoppages are unlikely to begin before Christmas except in Northern Ireland, where the law on industrial disputes is different. They would probably be short term to begin with and would require the union to negotiate what level of staffing was needed to maintain “life and limb” emergency cover. However, McAnea said, given the staff shortages this may not be notably different to what happens normally.

“We’re pretty certain that they will come back to us with proposed safe staffing levels which are higher than we’ve got at the moment,” she said. “Our members feel that the situation is already so bad, they don’t think it will get any worse when they take action. What it will do is draw attention to just how bad it is in the NHS.”

McAnea said that while the Scottish government seemed open to negotiations – the offer there is 5%, also rejected by the union – Unison had repeatedly sought contact with Liz Truss and Thérèse Coffey, the health secretary, with no response.

“The government, instead of demonising unions, has to recognise that it’s their responsibility to come back and talk to us,” she said. “How is the government going to frame this, when it’s our members taking strike action?

“Are they seriously going to tell a healthcare assistant who worked all through Covid and is on £18,000 or £19,000 a year, ‘You’re holding the country to ransom’? Are they going to say, ‘You’re being irresponsible’? Are they going to say they’re an enemy of progress and an enemy of growth?”

The infinitewatch chronicles:Timelines collide part III

As Titan walks through the rift leading the new recruits he says, “We need to buy Eren time to get this right.” As he says that, they all hear infinite’s voice in their heads say, “Find the warriors of this timeline. There is also a god class being on this list. Find Luz Noceda, Amity Blight, Augustus Porter, Willow Park, Edalyn Clawthorne, King Clawthorne, and Hunter…” he stumbled on the last name, “We aren’t sure what his last name is. It’s either Hunter Noceda or Hunter Wittebane. We’ll worry about it later. Other than Edalyn, they should all be at the titan skull. For any who wasn’t accessed this will be your assessment. Prove yourself useful to infinitewatch and you will be among our ranks.” They begin to go to the skull to find who Infinite has asked for. Titan says, “Eren, maybe if you get to the titan skull you can use your abilities better.” Eren asks, “How would that even make sense?” Titan, “I’ve no idea but this is our best plan.” Eren sighs as Piek bites her hand and transforms into a titan. She says, “Alright, let’s go.” They all climb on her titan body’s back and she sprints as fast as possible and they reach the titan skull in minutes. On the way Eren tried screaming at the wall titans when they saw them but he didn’t transform as his titan body would crush Piek’s titan body and none of the titans even slowed down. Reiner says, “How will we even get them to listen. As far as they know we could be responsible for all of this.” Titan responds, “We’re just going to have to convince them to come with us. But our main mission is to stop this uncontrolled rumbling.” Zeke says, “Maybe if we can kill a few of the wall titans while they’re watching they’ll believe us and come with us.” Porco says, “Are none of us going to acknowledge that thing with a shit ton of eyes fighting those people?” Infinite says, “That is emporer Belos aka Phillip Wittebane.” Captain Levi says, “Wait, wasn’t Wittebane a possible last name for one of the people we need to retrieve?” Infinite says, “We need to focus on retrieving them however if we can capture Belos it would be a great win for us. Even if he’s only taken as a prisoner it could be of great benefit for us to have him. Now go recruit the people fighting belos.” Mikasa says, “If we can stop capture Belos maybe they’ll join us.” Eren says, “I’ll get to the stop of the titan skull. Maybe the wall titans will here me from here.” He begin climbing up the skull and transforms when he gets within a safe distance on the skull that the others won’t be hurt. Suddenly they look over their shoulder and Armin seems to be surprised as he says, “Annie?!?” “A girl in a similar uniform to captain Levi and mikasa walks over and says, “What the hell is going on here? I saw this giant skull appear and then the wall titans escaped and everything seems to have gone to shit.” Armin says, “I’ll explain everything later, but right now we need to take care of that thing and talk to those kids over there.” Annie says, “Fine. But I can’t transform here.” Mikasa says, “That’s why I’ll take care of it from here.” Titan says, “Wait! Don’t…” He doesn’t finish his sentance in time as mikasa uses her odm gear to zip through, dodging the attacks the potential recruits were using. She slices Belos in half and holds him by the head as she says, “Anybody got something to contain this thing in?” As the others just stare jaws dropped and eyes wide Belos says, “A new body!” And appears to enter mikasa’s body through the skin. Her eyes suddenly glowed blue. Titan said, “Goddamnit. This is why I tried to stop her.” He charged forward with his staff drawn. He swings into her side and she’s thrown into the wall. When she speaks it wasn’t her voice but rather Belos’s voice, “You’re a fool to think that would stop me.” But as the tries to get back up, they see a crack in reality appear and Infinite walks through. “All of you, hold her down,” he says. Everyone holds her down and Infinite says, “I fucking hate newbies sometimes.” As everyone holds her down infinite’s armor retreats into the power core.

When it does instead of a body a humanoid shaped cloud of dark purple smoke is revealed. The yellow ring of the power core begins to glow and mikasa’s eyes stop glowing blue. Mikasa’s voice says, “thank you.” Infinite responds, “Don’t thank me yet. It’s still in you and our only way to get it out isn’t exactly what I’d call pleasant.” Suddenly, he reaches his hand towards Mikasa and fires red lighting from his finger tips at her as the red ring on his power core begins to glow. She screams in agony but the creature begins emerging from her body. Levi screams at Infinite saying, “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!!!!” Infinite says, “Easy captain Levi, this is the only way we can help her.” The goo follows the lightning and he materializes a capsule to hold belos in and shifts the lightning to go into it. Mikasa continues screaming. Suddenly, they hear pounding above them as Eren walks on top of the skull. Finally, all of belos is removed from Mikasa and she stops screaming. Infinite’s armor comes back from his power core and he falls to the ground exhausted. Titan says, “Go back Infinite, I can handle it from here.” Infinite’s visor color goes from yellow to orange as he says, “sir yes sir.” It switches back to yellow as another rift forms and he walks back through it. Suddenly, something that appears to be a fox with a skull on its head runs up a stair case that was near by. One of the kid fighting belos runs to it and says, “King! Oh my god I’m so glad you’re ok!” Titan looks over at Levi and says, “Alright lemme take care of this.” He walks to the front of the room and says, “Listen, I don’t have time to explain what’s happening right now. What are all of your names?” The girl that ran to King says, “My name’s Luz.” A girl with purple hair says, “I’m Amity.” A boy with some sort of mirror earring says, “I’m Augustus, but you can call me Gus.” Another kid this one holding some staff with a bird on the end says, “My name is Hunter.” Finally, a girl with a green dress says, “and I’m Willow.” Titan nods as they hear a loud scream from above. Titan says, “well things are about to get a lot better or a shit ton worse.” Suddenly, the wall titans all began to walk to the skull. Titan sighs and says, “guess it’ll be a shit ton worse. Anybody who can turn into a titan now’s the time. And if you can’t… things are about to get shitty and you need to find a high vantage point that isn’t flammable and you can get a good view of the napes of their necks.” Levi and Mikasa use their odm gear to swing out of the titan skull. King says, “Wait! I have an idea! It’s risky but it could end this quickly.” Titan says, “Then go do it. We need to either eradicate all the wall titans or buy Eren enough time to control the wall titans into stopping.” King runs back down the stairs Luz says, “Amity come on, I’ve got an idea.” Luz pulls out a piece of paper with some sort of symbol and goes to the top of the skull. Gus, Willow, and Hunter take flight on their staffs. Titan says, “colt, I’m going to increase my size to 15 meters. I will proceed to pick you and armin up. I will then throw you into the titans where you can transform safely and fight the wall titans. Understand?” Colt and Armin nod. Titan gestures for them to follow him. They go outside and Titan increases his size and throws them into the air, in the middle of the wall titans they were thrown into, two giant explosions of yellow lighting appear and armin’s colossal titan and colt’s armor increases to 60 meters and mimic’s the appearance of a colossal titan wearing armor. Annie, Reiner, Colt, Falco, Porco, and Piek all transform they charge into the wall titans. They look up and see fire flying from atop an ice pillar on top of the titan skull and they see Eren beginning to climb down from the skull. When he reaches the bottom he tries screaming again but this time it seems to make the wall titans run faster to the skull and they overwhelm everybody. Titan releases a large thermo nuclear blast after screaming with effort. He yells out, “WE NEED TO RETREAT BACK TO INFINITEWATCH HOME BASE!”

“LUZ!!!!!!!!!” Amity screamed from the ice pillar, the wall titans had reached the top of the skull where the Eren had retreated. As they walked on the skull the base of the ice tower melted partly and as their walking caused the skull to shake Luz fell and was crushed under a wall titan’s foot. Balls of light began floating up from where the wall titan stepped. Eren screamed one last time and finally, the wall titans began to slow until eventually stopping all together. A tears began to roll down amity’s face Titan’s visor color changed to dark purple. Infinite’s voice entered Titan, Levi, Mikasa, and the titan shifter’s heads and said, “come on, we have some new recruits to evaluate.” It sounded like there was regret in his voice. Titan gathered everybody back to the skull and another rift appeared as Titan and the people he’d taken into the universe walked through, Amity appeared to not want to go through. She said, “I won’t leave here without King and Eda.” Infinite walks through the rift and says, “Fine where are they.” Amity says, “King is down those stairs and Eda should be near that tower over there.” She pointed to a tower in the distance. “Fine.” Infinite says. He glows light blue and suddenly, a light blue flash appears on the tower in the distance. Soon after he reappears in a flash of blue light with Eda. She says, “Where’s Luz?” Amity looks at the ground and looks like she’s about to cry. Eda says, “No. How did it happen?” Titan replies saying, “I’m sorry miss Clawthorne. She was fighting the wall titans and when they reached her their body heat melted the base of her ice tower she’d fallen and was crushed under the foot of one of them.” Eda fell to her knees and Gus, Willow, Hunter, and Amity went to comfort her. During this, they failed to notice belos escape from the capsule Infinite had created. Infinite walks over to comfort Eda and says, “I wish there was something I could say to help the pain go away. But there’s nothing anybody can say to fix something like this. I wish I could’ve prevented this. I genuinely do. All I can do now is offer a new home for you. One that wasn’t trampled.” Eda says, “I don’t care how damaged this place is. It’s my home and I was fighting to save it.” Infinite sighs before saying, “Look, I need to go get King from down there. But Amity won’t come with us if you and King don’t. And I know King won’t come if you don’t. Would you please at least come to see what we have to offer?” Eda nods but still looks crushed. Infinite walks down the stairs and sees King with what appears to be a child. He says, “The collector.” King says, “He can solve our problem!” Infinite’s visor also switches to purple as he says, “The problem’s been solved. But it has come at a great cost. Your…” Infinite struggles to finish the last sentence. “Your sister, she died. Fighting to save her home.” King screams and the entire cave nearly collapses but the collector reaches out his hands and holds the ceiling up. He creates several pillars which hold the ceiling up. “Come, Eda and the others are up there,” Infinite says. “Maybe they can help to comfort you better than I can.” King walks up the stairs and Eda sees him. She sees the expression he bares and seems mildly relieved she doesn’t have to tell him what happened, however she’s still crushed by the recent events. Infinite says, “Guys, I gotta be honest. This mission was my plan. The cost was not anticipated and this will factor into the aftermath of the mission. I promise that those responsible will face repercussions. Including myself. Perhaps had been here instead of monitoring Luz would still be here.” Everyone who’s known Luz were too shocked to respond. Infinite continues, “For now, Titan will help you settle into infinitewatch until I can take up my part. You will join a different division led by someone who should be relatively familiar. For now you will be sent to a place where you may rest until I can give your orientation. Eren Yager, come with me. I’m aware you did not do this on purpose but we must do something.”

Infinite finished this by saying, “You killed a fucking kid. Have you any idea how fucked up that is?” They all walk through a rift created by Infinite as belos crawls down the skull, towards the castle built right at the titan’s heart.

It can be hard to pinpoint when the mental health of youth in Oregon began to decline so rapidly but it is not difficult to guess what some of the contributing factors are. In March of 2020 the world came to a stand still with the emergence of Covid-19, schools were closed and children became isolated. It was a hard change for adults to get used to and for youth who had to suddenly adjust to the change in routine and the isolation the effects were felt that much stronger. The pandemic also meant that a lot of treatment facilities also had to reduce their available beds because of staffing challenges that went along with the new guidelines.

Lack of staffing has been the cause of many closures for youth residential facilities in the past few years. As of September 2022 in Oregon there is a “deficient 36,000 behavioral health care workers”(Porter and Koch 2023). This problem is only getting worse as more health care workers are becoming burnt out from the staffing shortages and low pay. This is hopefully being combated with recent investment into the mental health system by the Oregon Legislature. According to the Oregon Health Authority the $1.35 billion is being distributed according to these main categories:

Aid and Assist: Funding to provide treatment, housing and other supports for people who are not competent to face a criminal proceeding due to the severity of their mental health issue.

Behavioral Health Crisis System/988: Funding to improve Oregon’s for crisis care and support, including development of a 24/7 hotline for people experiencing a behavioral health crisis.

Ballot Measure 110 implementation: Funding for drug treatment and recovery services in Oregon counties.

Behavioral Health Housing/Social Determinants of Health (SDOH): Funding for expansion of residential settings for people with serious and persistent mental illness.

Behavioral Health Workforce: Funding for behavioral health providers for staff compensation, workforce retention and recruitment.

Investment/Innovation: Funding for to better coordinate access to care, incentivize culturally and linguistically specific services, invest in workforce diversity and support staff recruitment. (oregon.gov 2023)

The lack of staffing is being addressed in particular by the House Bill 404 in 2022 which includes $132.3 million in grants. These grants are looking to increase funding to existing staff as well as pay retention bonuses aimed at recruiting and retaining new staff.

In Oregon there are many organizations that are working to overcome the barriers that are presented when children are in need of mental health treatment. One of the organizations is reaching out online as well as providing safe in person drop in centers. This can help those in need feel more comfortable to ask for help and receive care. Youth Era based in Eugene Oregon currently has 5 drop in centers with another in Columbia County in the works and currently offering services virtually. By offering services virtually and with a level of anonymity they are able to help those who might not be able to come in person receive care and feel supported. Youth Era offers one-on-one peer support, crisis support, training to develop youth outreach programs, as well as help building support systems for youth and their families.

Trillium Family Services is another organization that provides outreach and direction to youth that are suffering from mental health crisis. One of Trillium’s main outreach programs is called Keep Oregon Well, “is a public advocacy campaign and social movement designed to reduce stigma surrounding mental and behavioral health, build a trauma-informed community, and give people the opportunity to learn more about mental health while standing with those who may be struggling with theirs.” (Trilliumfamily.org 2023) Trillium also offers more structured help with several treatment facilities including; residential, inpatient, subacute, and transitional living.
