Some 65,000 unionized hospital workers in Ontario have been awarded a pay increase of six per cent over two years in an arbitration decision.
Workers represented by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions — CUPE (OCHU-CUPE) and SEIU Healthcare — will have their pay increased by three per cent per year for two years, with a boost to health and dental benefits also awarded, according to the union.
The union represents groups including personal support workers, porters, food servicing and technicians in both pharmacy and X-Ray.
The same workers were given a retroactive pay increase of 6.25 per cent over three years for the period they were capped by the now-cancelled Ford government wage restraint legislation.
“Today’s arbitration decision will lift the spirits of frontline hospital workers who are struggling with impossible workloads in a staff retention crisis,” OCHU-CUPE president Michael Hurley said in a statement. [...]

1766 – Christoffel Bosch van Leeuwarden, a seventy year old porter in the Netherlands, was convicted of seduction to sodomy and sentenced to three years of prison labour.

1880 – A medical journal publishes an article, "Notes upon Sodomy," which claims that men who engage in sodomy have a different type of penis from those who don't.

1918 – James Daly (d.1978) was an American theater, film, and television actor, who is perhaps best known for his role as Paul Lochner in the hospital drama series Medical Center, in which he played Chad Everett's superior.
Daly was born in Wisconsin Rapids in Wood County in central Wisconsin, to Dorothy Ethelbert (Hogan) Mullen, who later worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, and Percifer Charles Daly, a fuel merchant. During the 1930s, Daly studied drama and acted in shows before he worked for the armed services, and served with the United States Navy as World War II ended.
Daly was a music major at the University of Wisconsin, a drama major at Iowa State University, and attended Carroll College before receiving a degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.[3] Cornell College later presented him with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.
Daly was an accomplished stage actor, starting out in 1946 as Gary Merrill's understudy in Born Yesterday. His starring roles on Broadway included Archibald MacLeish's Pulitzer Prize- winning J.B. and Tennessee Williams' Period of Adjustment.
Between 1953 and 1955, Daly appeared in the TV series Foreign Intrigue. He guest-starred on many television series, including Appointment with Adventure (two episodes), Breaking Point, Mission: Impossible, The Twilight Zone ("A Stop at Willoughby"), The Tenderfoot (1964) for Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, The Road West (1966 episode "The Gunfighter"), Custer, Gunsmoke, Combat!, The Fugitive, The Virginian, and Twelve O'Clock High. He portrayed Mr. Flint (an apparently immortal human) in the Star Trek episode "Requiem for Methuselah" (1969).
In 1958, Daly signed a contract with the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to do television commercials for Camel cigarettes. He served as the Camel representative for seven years, being flown by Reynolds throughout the United States to be filmed smoking a Camel cigarette at various locations.
According to his son Tim Daly during an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, James Daly came out to Tim as gay a decade after divorcing his wife Hope. His struggle to come to terms with his sexual orientation nearly put a rift between him and his family. As homosexuality was still considered a mental illness until the early 1970s, he and his wife tried and failed at "curing" him. After their divorce, Daly decided to limit his contact with his children out of fear that they would end up mentally ill themselves.
Two of Daly's children, Tyne Daly and Tim Daly, and his granddaughter, Kathryne Dora Brown, and grandson, Sam Daly, are actors. Tyne appeared on Daly's TV series, Foreign Intrigue, as a child. The elder Daly and his daughter both guest-starred separately in the original Mission: Impossible TV series. Tim appeared as a child with his father in Henrik Ibsen's play, An Enemy of the People. Daly had two other children: daughters, Mary Glynn and Pegeen Michael.
Daly died on July 3, 1978, of heart failure in Nyack, New York, two years after Medical Center ended, and while he was preparing to star in the play Equus in Tarrytown, New York. His ashes were sprinkled into the Atlantic Ocean.

1923 – The American composer Ned Rorem, American composer, was born today. He is most well-known and praised for his song settings. He was born in Richmond, Indiana and received his early education in Chicago. He later travelled in Europe and North Africa.
During the time he lived in Morocco and Paris (1949-57), his song texts came from several languages. An avid diarist, in 1969 he published his Paris Diary, which, with his later diaries, has brought him some degree of notoriety, as he is honest about his and others' sexuality, describing his relationships with Leonard Bernstein, Noël Coward, Samuel Barber, and Virgil Thomson, and outing at least a few people.
Rorem has written extensively about music as well. These essays are collected in anthologies such as "Setting the Tone", "Music From the Inside Out", and "Music and People". His music prose is much admired, not least for its barbed observations about prominent musicians such as Pierre Boulez.

1954 – Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning Taiwanese-born director was born today. Lee decided to take on a small-budget, low-profile independent film based on Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-finalist short story originally published in The New Yorker, Brokeback Mountain. In a 2005 article by Robert K. Elder, Lee was quoted as saying, "What do I know about Gay ranch hands in Wyoming?" In spite of the 'straight' director's removal from the subject at hand, Brokeback Mountain showcased Lee's skills in probing depths of the human heart.

The 2005 movie about the forbidden love between two Wyoming cowboys immediately caught public attention and initiated intense debates. The film was critically acclaimed at major international film festivals and won Lee numerous Best Director and Best Film awards worldwide. In addition, "Brokeback" became a cultural phenomenon and a box office hit. "Brokeback" was nominated for a leading eight Oscars and was the frontrunner for Best Picture heading into the March 5 ceremony, but lost out to Crash, a story about race relations in Los Angeles, in a controversial upset. There was speculation that the film's depiction of homosexuality might have been the reason for that upset, while others speculate that Crash was simply a better movie. Lee said he was disappointed that his film did not win Best Picture, but was honored to win Best Director, becoming the first Asian to ever win the award.
If you're a fan of Brokeback but don't know Ang Lee's other work, we'd recommend his brilliant and touching 1993 film "Wedding Banquet." The film about an interracial Gay couple and the meeting of cultures is a treasure.
He also managed to successfully film Life of Pi, the claustophobic story of a castaway boy and a Bengal tiger togetther adrift in a lifeboat - in widescreen 3D, yet!

1971 – Matthew Williamson is an English fashion designer.
Williamson is openly gay. He counts celebrities such as Cat Deeley, Sienna Miller, Kelis, Jade Jagger and Plum Sykes amongst his friends, but has often been criticised by others in the fashion industry for using them to promote his designs.
He was born in Manchester, England, and studied in Manchester at Loreto College until he was 17. He then moved to London to attend school at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, graduating in 1994.
His eponymous fashion house was founded in February 1997. That same year, Williamson debuted his collection 'Electric Angels' at London Fashion Week. His collections were displayed during New York Fashion week in 2002. His store at 28 Bruton Street, in Mayfair, London, followed in 2004.
In 2005, he launched his own perfume range; the following year he was appointed Creative Director at Emilio Pucci. In 2007, a runway show of his designs was incorporated into the video for Prince's song "Chelsea Rodgers" from his Planet Earth album. In 2007, the Design Museum, London, hosted a restrospective of his work entitled "Matthew Williamson – 10 years in Fashion".
In 2008, Williamson was awarded the "Red Carpet Designer" accolade at the British Fashion Awards where he has also received three nominations for Designer of the Year. In September 2008 Matthew Williamson returned to London full-time to focus fully on his own label's forthcoming ventures and expansion. He made a guest appearance on season 7 of Project Runway. The episode aired on 28 January 2010.
In October 2010 it was announced that Matthew Williamson signed a new licensing deal with MBFG. The deal began a new line – Muse by Matthew Williamson.
His collections are shown twice a year during New York Fashion Week, and they often have an Indian influence, perhaps related to the time Williamson spent working in India for the clothing store Monsoon.

We’re taking a look at the Syndicate and the Thieves’ Guild. Because Korb loves CRIME.
The Syndicate is sort of. All over, but their current Big Boss is Baxog en-Dagha, and his headquarters is on Eir Terminal. There is. A whole rant on Bax. I am so incredibly normal about the big mob lizard. Pretty much anyone can dock on Eir Terminal, credits are credits as far as Bax is concerned — and boy, does he love his credits. Almost as much as he loves his spreadsheets but not nearly as much as he loves fu—anyway, you know an easy way to get more credits out of dipshits who don’t check their fuel gauges before they leave home and have to make an emergency stop on Eir Terminal?
The same way DoorDash does it, of course: f e e s.
There’s a docking fee, an hourly rate, a daily rate, an overnight rate, porter service (note: do NOT give your shit to the porter service if you don’t want it disappearing), nonresident visitor fees, “investigation permit” fees special for the GEA— you catch my drift, and I’m getting off track.
Want to avoid all those fees? Buy a big tub of cheese puffs and a six pack of light beer. NOT dark beer, it’s too bitter, she doesn’t like it. Ask for Besh before you give your credentials. Now the Thieves’ Guild is a lot more exclusive — you want in, first you have to find the fuckin thing. Check the job boards for any posting labeled, “Union Work for Freelancers.”
There are no unions in Xatal; if you’re legit, you’ve either got fair labor protections in Council territory, or you’re stuck in a debt contract with Sersys or Amilla-Svarax. Otherwise, you’re either working for the mob, one of the gangs, or you freelance.
Submit your inquiry on the posting and write down the post ID. You’ll receive a call from an encrypted number within six Galactic Standard hours. The caller will say something about receiving a lot of inquiries and ask which posting you’re inquiring about. Give them the ID. They’ll give you coordinates that bring you to Ignis Station’s current location (it moves).
Step two: when traffic control asks you about your reason for visiting, give them the post ID and tell them you’re “here for an interview,” then ask for directions to the “employment office.”
Don’t do air quotes, though. That’ll buy you approximately ninety seconds to whip your ship around and get out of range while the antimatter cannons warm up.
There is no employment office. Genny was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
She left this life suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Genny was born in Bronson, Florida, Sept. 21, 1928, daughter of Geneva Berryhill Osteen and Leander (Lee) Alexander Osteen of Otter Creek Florida. She was their third child and only daughter. Her mother passed when she was only six years old.
School was one of her loves, along with books. She graduated with high honors and went on to attend Bob Jones University with a degree in Religion and History. In 1950 she graduated. She and a college friend traveled to Gilmer County West Virginia to teach Bible School for the summer, with a missionary for the American Sunday School Union, Glenn U. Kirkpatrick. After the summer she returned to North Carolina to teach a semester.
In December 1950, she returned to West Virginia and married Glenn Kirkpatrick. There was a huge snow storm that December that shocked the young Florida lady. Genny was a partner with him, in the American Sunday School Union, typing reports, putting out newsletters, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and Bible Camp. They had three children, Glenn Joel (Joey), Rebecca B. (Becky) and Robert William Paul (Bobby).
Summers were filled traveling from county to county, in West Virginia, having Bible Schools ending with a Bible Camp in August.
During the rest of the year, it was a different church or one-room schoolhouse each Sunday for Sunday School and preaching.
In all of her free time, she taught herself to drive and took a class at the Gilmer County Career Center to learn to work on cars. She never missed a band concert, choir concert or ball game that her children were in.
Genny worked for the Dept. of Human Services as a Social Worker, and then for the Area Agency on Aging at The Gilmer County Senior Citizens’ Center.
The bookworm in her, took her back to school at Marshall University for a Masters in Special Education and Learning Disabilities.  It was back to teaching, this time in the Gilmer County School system.
Special Olympics became a big part of her life. She loved working with the children and giving them new experiences. For 30 years, she was the Director of Special Olympics in Gilmer County.  When the house needed an addition, she built one on. Nothing could stop this lady.
When grandchildren came, there was plenty of love to go around. As with her children, she was always there for them. Stewarts Creek Church was her home church.
Genny served on the board of the Gilmer County Historical Society. The newsletter for the Gilmer County WV Retired School Employees was one of her projects she loved doing.
She was a member of the Martha’s and Mary’s of Gilmer County and received the Helping Hands Award. Others now saw what we always knew, she was the one behind the scenes lifting all the rest of us up.
Genny was preceded in death by her husband Reverend Glenn U. Kirkpatrick, her sons Joey and Bobby Kirkpatrick, her granddaughters Julia Erin Oppe and Oakley Monroe Kirkpatrick, her mother Geneva and father Lee Osteen, her brothers Lee and Richard Osteen.
Surviving are her daughter Becky and son-in-law Jim Oppe, grandchildren children Tiffany and her husband Mitch Davis their children Luke and Emma, Whitney Oppe and Woody Porter, Carrie and her husband Kevin Summers and son Wyatt, Tommy Kirkpatrick his wife Amber their children Keegan and Ava, Charlie Kirkpatrick, Tara and her husband Billy Eagleston and children Kylie and Landyn, and Chandra Kirkpatrick and her children Jade and Trinity. And Genny’s adopted families the Dorans and Pifers.  
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, with Rev. Bill Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery near Glenville. Friends will be received from noon-2 p.m.; Thursday at the mortuary in Glenville.

An elderly man gets a visit from a new home health aide – one with added benefits!
First impressions count. Especially at the start of a new job. It’s a chance to let your professionalism shine, and prove why you were hired in the first place – while demonstrating your top notch skill-set first hand.
This is the situation young Bambi finds herself in at the beginning of Chris Beadnell’s comedy short, Outcall.
A new girl at her agency, Bambi’s got to impress her boss, and satisfy her clients – totally. As we join her in her new venture, she’s preparing to meet a new customer. Is the girl dressed properly? Check. Does she know what her task entails? Double check.
But when she arrives at the address, confusion rears it’s ugly head. Because this locale isn’t your usual meet for Bambi’s line of work. And not a typical client either.
It’s not often you get an 82-year-old man named John requesting the following from a 20-something girl:
            BAMBI So I have a shave, a back wash and a massage. That’s what we’re doing?
Then Bambi realises something else: the senile senior… stinks on ice! So she adds a quick shower to the list of on –the-job services, and gives the octogenarian a wet scrubbing. In the shower. Buck naked. An experience John relishes. Ah, customer service at its best!
But halfway through the shaving routine, two major twists run this train right off its tracks:
   Bambi’s phone rings.    There’s a hurried knock at the door.
Maybe that’s coincidence. Or these events are connected. But if so – how? Only one person knows for sure, and that won’t be you…until you read the script!
This certainly ain’t a family friendly short, but it’s audience-friendly all the way. That ridiculous shower scene is a total gem: providing a mix of amusing/mature entertainment… with clever plot revelations along the way. It’s not often you see those two adjectives in the same sentence, but Outcall weds them instantly. Now, all it needs is the perfect Minister (um, “Director”) to finish the job… even if Bambi can’t.
Pick this one up, and you’ll be called in to many award ceremonies! With satisfied “clients” all the way!
Budget: Pretty low. Your primary priority: two great actors… with great comedic timing and chemistry!
