MOTÖRMUSIC '81 -- FLYING HIGH ABOVE THE ROCK 'N' ROLL STRATOSPHERE.
PIC INFO. Spotlight on a "road crew" shot of live MOTÖRHEAD (complete with their iconic "Bomber" lighting rig), putting on a hell of a gig at Heavy Metal Holocaust, Port Vale Football Stadium, Stoke-on-Trent, UK, c. August 1981.
Hey, this Motörgig went down in DISCHARGE's hometown of all places (how kool is that?), and I wonder if they were in attendance considering they were on their own UK tour that same summer dubbed the "Apocalypse Punk" UK Tour.

A screening list for an English club to buy
It's long been a dream of mine to buy a football ⚽ club in England and bring it up the divisions and try to turn it into a big club worth billions.*
What would be an ideal club to buy:
League Two (or possibly League One). League Two is the 4th division, league One is...the third division. In American terms, very roughly speaking, League One is AA minor league baseball, and League Two is A.
Close to an international airport with a direct flight. In practice from Houston this means greater London, maybe greater Manchester/Liverpool (there's a direct singapore air flight). On the other hand, maybe you move there and go 24/7.
Big stadium without urgent need for renovations where fans attend even in lean times. The gate is a big piece of the economic puzzle in lower divisions. The better the attendance in lean years means that you can (theoretically) lever up more with debt because the downside is lower (theoretically)
Higher GDP in surrounding area the better. More sporting success means more economic success. Also generally less xenophobia for when you buy the club and for the inevitable times when your team doesn't live up to expectations.
League Two (via Wikipedia)
Tumblr media
League One:
Tumblr media
Clubs on this list (12 in League One, 6 in League Two) roughly within an hour of Manchester airport without traffic: Bradford City, Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan, Barnsley, Port Vale,
Within an hour of Heathrow: Swindon Town, MK Dons, Charlton Athletic, Reading, Portsmouth, Oxford United.
Top of League One and League Two (by stadium capacity) are both clubs who would probably be pretty gunshy, for some different reasons. Derby County went busto, MK Dons got moved in controversial circumstances.
Tumblr media
Even knowing how football mad the general area is, it's somewhat surprising how many clubs are within an hour of the Manchester airport.
You notice Wrexham in the bottom left corner, as it's a short drive from the airport. A few actors managed to buy the club in a particularly brilliant manner by cross-promoting all their investments using a documentary, all the while acting as if they're losing money.
[I find the documentary really annoying. Lots of dumb jokes, overacted "reality scenes," not enough football, business or Wales. I do enjoy the Wales bits though.]
They did manage to go from the 5th division to the 4th division, however, which is a big accomplishment. They got the club apparently for free, by simply promising to invest in the club.
Tumblr media
There's a few clubs in London if you're willing to look at the 5th division, but the stadiums are small. For example, of that map, the largest stadium is Barnet at 6400. Since it's London, presumably expanding or building a new stadium when you need to is much more expensive.
I also think that 5th division complicates an obvious blueprint: for me, it would be recruit from Argentina relatively young and create a culture where players aren't homesick and can perform. Beyond that, Chelsea also showed us that buying lots of players cheap when they're young and loaning them out until you sell or play them is a profitable strategy.
_* Almost 20 years ago I spent hours figuring out Peter Thiel's email when he was at the height of his success as a macro trader to send him an extremely half-baked suggestion of buying a club in administration. If you assume he didn't respond, that is the safest of calls.
_** Technically the top level (the Premier League) is no longer a member of the EFL.

Local FA continue to raise Autism Awareness in Football
Benedict Ferraby
The Staffordshire Football Association are continuing to deliver workshops across the county in order to help local sides, both at senior and grassroots level, gain an understanding about how to deal with certain aspects of life, and understand how they unfold within the self-proclaimed ‘Beautiful Game’.
Tumblr media
Banners outside of the Burntwood Community Centre highlighting the event within the local community
The importance of campaigning
Their most recent campaign, in conjunction with Liberty Staffordshire, has been to deliver presentations and workshops about Autism Awareness. Liberty is a local charity who work with adults with neurodiversity. Both organisations have delivered a vast number of workshops over the past twelve months.
The presentation was held in April, therefore it is important to reference the timing as it comes in ‘Autism Awareness Month’, and not too long after ‘Autism Acceptance Week’ (March 27th – April 2nd). These workshops last between two to three hours in a very friendly environment which makes it easier for those taking part to feel welcomed; one of the key points made within their presentations.
Tumblr media
The most important statistic raised was that between men and women in the UK, the diagnosis ratio is 4:1, and that a number of women are undiagnosed due to a ‘masking’ of their autism. This can then make it difficult for a number of people working at a football club if they are unaware of a particular person’s individual needs and how they need to be supported. A spokesperson for Liberty highlighted two players she knew who found it highly difficult integrating at mainstream clubs and moved to a club which was able to offer them more support.
Taking this topic to a national scale is something that these campaigns are looking to achieve. In recent weeks, Wigan Athletic footballer James McClean publicised his own diagnosis, only to be met with hundreds of hate comments due to his personal views, which had no correlation.
Workshop
On Thursday 20th April, an event was hosted at the Burntwood Youth Centre, which is a facility used by locals to host community events. There was a mixture of people who undertook different roles for their various clubs, including two walking footballers for Stone Old Alleynians, which is a club that has various age and ability groups to cater to everybody’s needs.
Tumblr media
Throughout the event, there was a very friendly and engaging atmosphere, and the set-up of the presentation played a major part, with those who turned up often sharing what experiences they have had to deal with in relation to a vast array of scenarios, ranging from Health & Safety to keeping those who take part engaged in physical activity.
Gemma Machin is the Equality Officer at the Staffordshire FA, and she highlighted that the main aim of such campaigns is to not just help make a difference in grassroots football but to make a positive change to a wider culture.
“Its massive for us! To be sharing the key messages within the grassroots football community is really important.
“We want to make sure we’re providing an opportunity to participate in football, whatever the role might be as everybody deserves the opportunity.”
Some of these sessions have been held in front of groups of as many as thirty people, and Machin believes they can go from strength to strength as they look to deliver more practical-based workshops in the near future and that they will look to deliver the course on a monthly basis.
“We want these to get as big as they possibly can. We’ve accessed around 100 people directly through these workshops in the last twelve months.”
Tumblr media
Staffordshire FA's Equality Officer , Gemma Machin alongside a workshop volunteer
Earlier in the season, the FA took a number of people to Port Vale’s Vale Park stadium to help raise their profile regarding various campaigns and activities, as well as continued Autism awareness. One anecdote from this event was that a parent was unable to bring their Autistic son to the game as the son would have been uncomfortable because of sensory issues. Instances like this have been key in numerous clubs across the country introducing sensory rooms and packs. These rooms & packs have been put in place to provide those people who experience sensory issues the opportunity to attend matches in a more comfortable environment, which blocks out the overwhelming noise from the rest of the stadium.  These additions are in relation to the 2010 Equality Act which states that all disabled people are allowed to access the same opportunities and services as everybody else.
More information surrounding the workshops can be found on the Staffordshire FA website and their social media platforms.

League 1 Countries
Using MapChart, I made a map which looks at the idea of each League 1 football club being a nation. The capitals would be their respective home stadiums. The higher the team is in the table as of 19th April 2023, the higher precedent it gets for expansion. Expansion begins from the area their stadium is located.
There will be versions of this for other English leagues.

Wales will 'go toe to toe with anybody' at World Cup, says manager Robert Page
Wales will "go toe to toe with anybody" at the 2022 World Cup, having built belief from their performances at Euro 2016 and 2020, says manager Rob Page.
Wales will join England, USA and Iran in Group B in Qatar after Sunday's play-off final victory over Ukraine.
They reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals and progressed to the knockout stages from a difficult group at Euro 2020.
"We go with the confidence we have had going into any game," said Page, with the World Cup starting in November.
"We have played against the USA. We know they are a really strong outfit.
"We played against their European-based players in my first game (a 0-0 draw in November 2020).
"They [and Iran] are winnable games and, when you play against a home nations team, anything can happen.
"We will go toe to toe with anybody - bring it on. That's the attitude we have got in that changing room."
Wayne Hennessey's Ukraine display 'best I have seen' from a goalkeeper - Gareth Bale
World Cup qualification 'greatest result' in Welsh football history, says Gareth Bale
Wales take time to comfort Ukraine as they bask in World Cup play-off glory
World Cup 2022: Celebrations as Wales qualify after 64-year wait
Page only "had a little bit of sleep" after celebrating a famous 1-0 victory over Ukraine at Cardiff City Stadium, which ensured Wales will feature at just a second World Cup and their first in 64 years.
Speaking to Radio Wales Breakfast, Page added: "It's one of those surreal moments where you wake up and realise we are off to the World Cup. It is unbelievable.
"Even at the final whistle last night, I was thinking 'is this a cruel dream that I am having?' But then when you realise it's reality, coming back to the hotel and celebrating with the players last night, then waking up this morning and having that realisation again that we have done it.
"It's such a proud moment for the nation."
Page is only the second manager to guide Wales to a World Cup, following in the footsteps of another product of the Rhondda Valley, Jimmy Murphy, who was in charge in 1958.
Former Port Vale and Northampton boss Page, 47, has enjoyed a spectacular spell at the helm since stepping up from his assistant coach role 19 months ago.
"It's a special moment for me personally and for my family," added Page, who hails from Tylorstown.
"My mum and dad still live in the Rhondda. We are all going to enjoy it - we are supporters ourselves."
The Qatar World Cup will be Wales' third major tournament in six years after a run of qualifying failures which spanned almost six decades.
Robert Page celebrates
Wales have not lost a home game since Robert Page took the reins
Chris Coleman was the manager who broke the cycle when he led Wales to Euro 2016.
Page was quick to praise Coleman as well as his predecessor, the late Gary Speed, after Gareth Bale's deflected free-kick and a superb defensive display combined to see Wales beat Ukraine.
"Something had to change when I finished playing international football if we were going to give ourselves the best chance of qualifying for major tournaments and Gary did that," Page said.
"He took it to another level. That win last night was for Gary and his family.
"The professionalism, how we approach games, how we had an identity as a nation and as a team [was down to Speed].
"Chris Coleman took it to another level and we saw that in the Euros when we reached the semi-finals and massively punched above our weight.
I have inherited a group of players who absolutely adore playing for their country."

Football: Upsets flow in FA Cup as two Premier League clubs drop out [ad_1] Top-flight sides Brighton and Aston Villa lost to lower-league opposition in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, while Watford and Newcastle squandered first-half leads to teams in relegation trouble in the third tier to be taken to replays. The upsets kept coming in the world's oldest club knockout competition, as teams fighting to avoid relegation from the Premier League rotated their starting lineups after a packed festive schedule and came unstuck. Sheffield Wednesday won 1-0 at Brighton, and Fulham - another side seeking promotion from the second-tier League Championship - beat Villa 2-1 thanks to a dipping, long-range winner from substitute Harry Arter. Watford also ended the match with 10 men following the 89th-minute red card to Argentina midfielder Roberto Pereyra. Also facing a replay is Newcastle, after 40-year-old striker Aaron Wilbraham scored an 80th-minute equaliser for Rochdale in a 1-1 draw. Newcastle, which has not gone beyond the fourth round since 2006, went ahead through Miguel Almiron's 17th-minute strike - the Paraguay playmaker's second goal in two weeks after having gone his first 11 months at the northeast club without scoring. A replay, which is likely to take place on January 14 or 15, was the last thing Newcastle or Watford needed after playing four games in 11 days over Christmas and the new year. Newcastle's squad, in particular, was hit hard by injuries during the festive period and the team picked up two more injuries at Spotland as Almiron (groin) and Yoshinori Muto (hip) were forced off in the second half. "We knew Rochdale would try and do something in the second half and they punished us," Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said. "Credit to Aaron Wilbraham - he's been around longer than I have!" Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United played out a drab 0-0 draw at Molineux Stadium. United have now not beaten Wolves in their last five meetings. Manchester City, Leicester City, Burnley, Southampton and Norwich avoided upsets to book their places in the fourth round. Manchester City easily accounted for Port Vale 4-1 while Leicester City saw off Wigan Athletic 2-0. Burnley beat third-tier Peterborough 4-2, with striker Jay Rodriguez scoring twice, Southampton beat second-tier Huddersfield 2-0 and Norwich won 4-2 at Preston, with Irish striker Adam Idah scoring a hat trick. A one-minute delay preceded Sunday's games to raise awareness of a mental-health campaign, "Heads Up," which is spearheaded by English Football Association president Prince William. https://espnsoccer.co/?feed_id=54233 https%3A%2F%2Fespnsoccer.co%2Ffootball-upsets-flow-in-fa-cup-as-two-premier-league-clubs-drop-out%2F

Port Vale striker Tom Pope handed one-match ban for Twitter comments
Tumblr media
Port Vale striker Tom Pope has been banned for one game due to “improper” Twitter comments, the Football Association has announced.
The 34-year-old has also been fined £1,500 after a breach of FA Rule E3 was found proven by an independent regulatory commission.
The PA news agency understands that this is a separate matter to social media activity from Pope earlier this month which the FA is continuing to look into.
[2/2] The Port Vale FC forward denied that his Twitter comments were abusive and/or insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.
The independent Regulatory Commission found the charge proven on the basis that the comments were improper.
— FA Spokesperson (@FAspokesperson) January 22, 2020
On January 6, Pope apologised for a tweet he sent when asked to “predict the WWIII result” after scoring in his side’s 4-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.
His reply, which was later deleted, read: “We invade Iran then Cuba then North Korea then the Rothchilds (sic) are crowned champions of every bank on the planet.”
A statement from Pope published by his club stated that he was “unaware of any link between the Rothschild family and the Jewish community”.
Pope had previously created a storm on social media after his goal in the third-round FA Cup tie at the Etihad Stadium backed up his pre-match bravado in a personal battle with City defender John Stones.
Sorry I can’t reply to everyone it’s gone mental! I’d just like to say I was completely wrong and bang out of order to say I’d score 40 a season….. it’s more like 50

Last summer Pope mocked Stones in a tweet, claiming he would score 40 goals a season if he faced the England international every week.
In a follow-up post after the match, Pope joked: “I’d just like to say I was completely wrong and bang out of order to say I’d score 40 a season… it’s more like 50.”
Port Vale reported the news of Pope’s ban on their website but added that the club would be making no further comment.

Carabao Cup 2nd round fixtures: Newcastle, West Ham, Everton, Leeds, Leicester learn fate | Football | Sport
Dates…
22:20: Remember, all of the fixtures below will be played the week beginning August 26. Clearly one for your diaries – I think that’s the week the Great British Bake Off returns actually.
What stands out?
22:15: I suppose the eye is drawn to the all-Premier League tie between Newcastle and Leicester at St James’ Park.
Everton have a trip to Lincoln, while Aston Villa travel to Crewe. Leeds, who beat Salford tonight, have a home tie with Championship rivals Stoke.
Fulham vs Southampton should be a good fixture as will QPR vs Portsmouth – a tie that I was going to dub the Harry Redknapp derby – but he’s managed everyone so perhaps not.

SOUTH DRAW
PLYMOUTH vs READING
CRAWLEY vs NORWICH
NEWPORT vs WEST HAM
OXFORD vs MILLWALL
WATFORD vs COVENTRY
SWANSEA vs CAMBRIDGE
CARDIFF vs LUTON
BRISTOL ROVERS vs BRIGHTON
CRYSTAL PALACE vs COLCHESTER
FULHAM vs SOUTHAMPTON
BOURNEMOUTH vs FOREST GREEN
SOUTHEND vs MK DONS
QPR vs PORTSMOUTH
We’re ready!
22:05: Give yourselves a pat on the back for your sensational patience… we’re about to get started on the second-round draw.
Gary Neville (home draws) and Paul Robinson (away draw) are ready…
So…
22:02: Anyone seen any good box-sets recently? I’m struggling.
We’ve been promised the draw is coming up after the break. Either than or a 10-minute interview with Salford manager Graham Alexander – who knows at this point.
What’s happening?
22:00: You guessed it – Gary Neville and Paul Robinson are still discussing the Salford vs Leeds match. Not sure there’s much else to discuss lads.
Get the draw started!
Ey up!
21:55: The penalties are nearly over across the country. Crewe beat Middlesbrough, Macclesfield beat Blackpool, Newport knocked out Gillingham, QPR beat Bristol City, Wycombe were beaten by Reading.
I don’t know if you care about any of this – but I’ve started so I’ll finish.
MK Dons beat Wimbledon, Bristol City out after a penalty defeat to QPR, Cambridge beat Brentford. Oh, and in the late fixture Millwall have beaten West Brom 2-1.
Delay…
21:50: Sky Sports have got us right where they want us – glued to their coverage while they analyse the Salford vs Leeds match. I suspect the dozens of viewers aren’t too interested in Mateusz Klich’s 58th-minute goal…
Tumblr media

Penalties
21:45: Eight games are heading for penalties after a flurry of late goals. Blackburn were spared the dreaded spot-kicks thanks to a late Rothwell winner.
High-profile ones include Wimbledon vs MK Dons, Middlesbrough vs Crewe and QPR vs Bristol City. What a time to be alive.
Big late goals
21:40: Middlesbrough and Blackburn have both snatched draws in stoppage-time against Crewe and Oldham respectively to force penalty shootouts.
It’s full time and Leeds have knocked over Salford 3-0 to advance to the next round. Marco Bielsa’s side are in the hat!
What happens in a draw?
21:35: Any game that finishes in a draw tonight will be decided on penalties. No extra time or any of that nonsense.
As things stand five games will be decided by penalties – but I very much doubt we’ll be waiting on those to finish before the draw is made.
Who’s in?
21:30: Should you have decided to ignore the rest of this article – unwisely I might add – then you may not be aware that 13 Premier League clubs join the competition at the second-round stage.
Only the sides in Europe miss out – so that means Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Wolves join in the third round.
Tumblr media

What’s the plan?
21:25: Well the draw is supposed to take place after the conclusion of this Salford City vs Leeds clash – but knowing the Carabao Cup – honestly anything could happen.
Quite a few scalps exiting the competition Blackburn, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Wigan all losing with roughly ten minutes remaining.
Ball numbers
21:20: Why do people have a fascination with the ball numbers for these draws? I’ve seen countless articles on which ball number each side has been assigned.
Is it to know that split-second before the presenter reads it out? Anyway… you can see all the ball numbers if you scroll to the bottom of this page.
Yes, I’m a hypocrite!

Leeds vs Salford
21:15: Anyone watching the the featured game on Sky tonight? Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes were on the TV to discuss their beloved Salford City, who are entertaining Leeds at the Peninsula Stadium tonight.
Not quite gone to plan. Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship side are cruising through to the second-round draw. They currently lead 3-0 with Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah among the goals.
Evening…
21:10: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Carabao Cup second-round draw.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Wolves will not be involved tonight because of their Champions League and Europa League campaigns.
But 13 Premier League sides WILL learn their fate as the weird and wonderful world of a Carabao Cup draw unfolds at around 21:45.
Now we’ve not got the bizarre and unlikely double act of John Barnes and Ray Parlour drawing the balls at a Morrisons in north-west London – but it should be good nonetheless.

When is the Carabao Cup draw?
The Carabao Cup second round draw will take place on Tuesday August 13 2019.
The draw will be conducted at the Peninsula Stadium following the conclusion of Salford City’s first round showdown with Leeds United.
That game is scheduled to get underway at 7.45pm (BST) so, providing penalties are not required, the draw should begin around 9.35pm.
Sky Sports presenter Laura Woods will host the draw, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football.

Who can face who?
Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two clubs can be drawn against each other in any combination.
However, the draw will once again be regionalised into north and south sections to reduce travel times for supporters.
When are the second round fixtures?
The Carabao Cup campaign will draw to a close on Sunday March 1 2019.
So, in order to get everything done before then, the second round fixtures will take place in the week commencing Monday August 26.
