'I’ll be looking at the moon, but I’ll be seeing you.’ Alkazi Foundation
Hari Katragadda, in collaboration with writer and artist Shweta Upadhyay, won the prestigious Alkazi Grant for their ingeniously intense photobook titled 'I’ll be looking at the moon, but I’ll be seeing you.’ Hari said the project was inspired by the opening scene in Jean Luc- Godard’s Le Mépris (1963) and the Billie Holiday song, I’ll Be Seeing You (1944).
"The cinema substitutes for our gaze a world more in harmony with our desires."
André Bazin, French film critic
This famous quote shines brightly on-screen in the opening sequence of Le Mépris. The idea of desire is the thematic crux of Hari and Shweta’s photo book. Hari conceived the idea and translated it into this photo series through the expressions of the protagonist, his partner Shweta. The series is a tribute to the ephemeral moments filled with memories of loves lost and a yearning for the reawakening of love. It attempts to capture ways of seeing and perceiving one’s lover, desire, the lack thereof, and the heartache that follows a search for the elusive other...

I want to let everyone know that work from my Land Studies series has been included in a new book by the talented folks at Another Earth.
What Makes a Lake? Tracing Movement brings together the work of more than 80 artists to create a portrait of Earth’ lakes, rivers, and oceans. This collection of images and text offers an intimate experience of places that we hope create a new connection to and commitment for caring for our most vulnerable ecosystems. In exploring an expanded scope of lakes around many different communities, we see how all these bodies of water are not isolated but rather flowing in and out of one another, reminding us how much our impact ripples out. What changes can be made with new awareness?
What Makes a Lake? Tracing Movement is beautifully designed and printed and is now available for pre-sale, so you can order on the Another Earth website: https://another-earth.com/books.

Milestone Monday
September 11
On this Milestone Monday, September 11, our minds and hearts wander to New York City and the stirring photography of American photographer Jerry Spagnoli (b. 1956). For those of us with memories of witnessing the attacks on the Twin Towers, our immediate reaction to Spagnoli’s photos may be to assume the worst. However, these photos taken between May and September 2012 mark an unexpected and pure New York experience fabricated by Spagnoli in Times Square.
In his book Regard, Spagnoli documents the faces of people transfixed on an enormous electronic billboard above Times Square. The billboard was programmed to periodically display live imagery of the crowd below it. What we see in the almost 500 faces captured in Regard are people encountering the billboard, looking for and finding themselves projected upon it. Spagnoli is best known for his work with the daguerreotype photographic process and is included in several major American art museums. At the heart of his photography, and prevalent in Regard, is an unearthing of his subjects' points of view. Regard was published in 2018 by Steidl and printed in Göttingen, Germany. UWM Special Collections holds a first edition.
