The Soothing Drink. (Nepenthe Isidoros epilogue)

She still couldn’t fully explain it, but she could manifest it. She could do this, for them. The bond between them; four of them, including her, became three. She closed her eyes, pulled her aether into her hands and wove what was necessary over her altar. It was like unclasping a necklace and rejoining it apart from oneself; she closed the loop, made it self-sustaining, an endless circuit.

She owed them that much. Probably more, some part of her mind chided her; but the rest of her was pulled to her Calling. Her mothers would pack up her naos. In Nepenthe’s fiery wake raged many promises and oaths yet unfulfilled; who else would care for the naos? Who else would care for the koinonoi, the ragtag crew, the few friends she’d made that she now left behind?

Phoenix sang through the Eras in the Crystal Tower. Her summoner’s horn picked it up like a songwave, sent it rattle-humming through her skull. Nepenthe, she was called; the drink of the dead to bring them peace. For her, now, there was no such namesake solace; only that screeching summons, the need to follow her legacy into the depths of that shining monolith. The tomb of reason, her foremothers called it; they said it with disdain, with yearning. Complicated, her lineage. Never easy.

Nepenthe Isidoros spoke to her Ifrit eidolon one last time as the pair eyed the tower across the lake where the greatest of dragons seethed. You couldn’t drink the water without being drawn to him, it was said. These days, not even invasive pigweed tried to sip from the lake as it set roots among the blue crystal callouses that covered the Calamity’s scars, relying instead on droplets of aether from the swollen skies.

Soon, it wouldn’t matter. The fire she was born with, branded with, would consume her if she did not serve it. What was a priestess if not a servant, feverish in her inevitable devotion to an ancient pact? A quiet barrier between primal and deity; a bridge that bore the weight, until...

She snapped and sank into the call in her horn. Her lifetime of fire felt at peace, carried aloft on the wings of a forgotten god of Meracydia. Her inheritance. Her legacy.

Nepenthe was reborn within its wings; enshrouded by them. Nothing else mattered anymore; no friends, no lovers, no koinonoi. It was her all-encompassing duty to plumb the depths of the tower and secure a future for those beyond even Phoenix’s mighty healing span.

For a moment, the daughter of Allag, of Meracydia, thought of them. How their lives were fleeting, yet no less vital than a plum tree that offered its fruit to wasp and street-rat and scholar alike. Their lives were not her purview any longer; but she would look back on the records and remember the course the Nixie charted. She would remember the long years with her mothers, her brothers, her silly, itinerant father; her equally-silly Ifrit-egi with its love of tic-tac-toe that was both companion and the test of her bonds.

Nepenthe would remember, and her stoic face would allow a smile in memoriam from time to time, for centuries after all others were dust. ---

Most already know that my kid got me into Mark and we watched him play Gary’s Mod with some funny Irish kid with with no facecam. Initially Sean was too loud for me, we’re talking 2015 hyper motormouth era here, but my kid binged watched GTA 5, Goat Simulator, Kerbal, Besiege and Subnautica and as loud as that boy was, he was funny.

So some time after they took the pc back into their bedroom I was hit with a wave of curiosity about how that Jacksepticeye kid was doing. Fucker had 10 Million subs. TEN million! HOW??? I was intrigued, so I watched a few vlogs.

I’m still here.

State of the Idan~

After all the Moving Madness has finally (mostly...) settled down, I started wanting to write stories for my characters all the time...only to end up RPing a bunch of them all the time! I only have a handful of my crappy screenshots, but it’s been a ton of fun building some stories big and small with friends old and new. I got to start a new chapter in Anne-Sophie’s story (she’s returned from the First Shard a little heartbroken after Oberic didn’t make it back with her, but is now adventuring with two other Ishgardian knights, one of which is who Oberic’s player fantasia’d Oberic into). I got to play Sonorous River, my big boy Hellsguard bard that I haven’t played in several months, during an introductory event for a new member of my FC that was well-received. The Nixie’s crew is enjoying the Moonfire Faire before the ship weighs anchor in the early autumn for new adventures. Idanwyn even got to bake a wedding cake and (last-minute) officiate a handfasting for two fun cattes! I’ve decided to fantasia Nepenthe, my Allagan/Meracydian heritage summoner, because she was just too difficult for me to PC the way I wanted to. She was definitely the character that lived most fully in my head, I think; my long, deep obsession with what life would have been like on the religious side of the Allagan empire, the first summoners tempered a little bit by the gods they sought to conquer is a lot of fun for me to play with in my head, but not so much with other people. That said, I’m going to be writing her a little closing chapter, making her an NPC (because I hate killing my characters if I can avoid it), and rolling the Allagan/Meracydian thing into a couple other old idea-tendrils that that seek being together into one character. Nepenthe and her crazy family are definitely in my book that I’m always poking at writing, though, so I’m grateful for my time in FF to allow me to develop them.

Rambly, rambly, berry brambly. Hopefully I’ll have some stories here soon, although I’m certainly not lamenting writing many of them with others! Either way, I’m very much looking forward to FFxivWrite2021; there’ll be stories then, for sure.
