Ilmiliekki Quartet - Land Of Real Men (We Jazz Records)
An instrumental jazz quartet version of Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman”? That’s what opens this album. The words of the original are so powerful, I think, that they overshadow the little masterpiece of minimalist composition underneath. So here trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and company make it stand on its own, and it works. 
Ilmiliekki Quartet is a band of four star-calibre Finnish jazz musicians. The group is a key unit for each of the artists, and one of their original vehicles of creation since its formation in 2002. Here, trumpet player Verneri Pohjola, pianist Tuomo Prättälä, bassist Antti Lötjönen (of The Five Corners Quintet, Timo Lassy Band, 3TM, etc.) and drummer Olavi Louhivuori (of the late Tomasz Stanko's quintet and Oddarrang) present their first new album in 13 years. "Land Of Real Men" is a milestone which will stand strong in each of the four musicians already remarkable discography. Stylistically Ilmiliekki Quartet range from the delicate end of the sparse contemporary jazz sound to the depths of Nordic fire music, always making music which is highly personal and melodic to the bone. Presented in gatefold 2LP, CD and digital formats, "Land Of Real Men" to be released via Helsinki's We Jazz Records on April 26 offers eight stellar Ilmiliekki cuts, each with its own strong character. The stylistic narrative of the album takes the listener on a journey much akin to the groups celebrated live shows, which are always a hit in their native Finland, but which have also taken the group to Europe, US and Australia. Ilmiliekki Quartet (which roughly translates as "Quartet Ablaze") were one of the big success stories of the "first wave" of Finnish jazz in the new millennium, and although they never really went away, the band is now back with a vengeance.

Superposition, “Bilawal” (We Jazz 2020) | There is absolutely no doubt as to why I am addicted to this song by Superposition, a Finnish jazz quartet led by drummer Olavi Louhivuori, and featuring Adele Sauros on tenor saxophone, Linda Fredriksson or alto & baritone sax and Mikael Saastamoinen on bass. It is because “Bilawal” sounds South African — and for me, that sound is manna from heaven. Some time in the early Aughts, I had the great fortune to be given a sizable South African jazz record collection by a friend’s parents, and many of the records included were by Abdullah Ibrahim/Dollar Brand. A masterful composer, with a traditionalist wealth of knowledge and a knowing modernist’s touch. Many of the melodies strewn throughout these records were a meditative combination of gospel music and mbaqanga, a version of the country’s jazz music that goes back to the early 20th century. I’d never before heard anything that was at once so familiar and yet so fresh, as the melodies on those Abdullah Ibrahim records. I then sought out and proceeded to find them, again and again, on the recordings and compositions of a special band of SA musicians. Now, nearly 20 years later, I can’t un-hear this music - and when I do hear it, I can’t put it down. Melodically, it is imbued with the spirit of knowing and freedom that speaks more clearly about what it means to be human than almost any music I have ever heard. I have an explanation for how Louivouri’s quartet accessed this music so foreign to them so fully and thoughtfully, but it is not for here. (Plus, I do not know if that explanation is the slightest bit correct.)

TOMASZ STANKO (1942-2018) The great Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has died, aged 76. An innovative force in the music, with an immediately identifiable sound - integrating, by his own description, “Slavic melancholy and the blues” - Stanko first came to broader attention in the early 1960s with the groups of composer-pianist Krzysztof Komeda, playing on the soundtracks of Polanski’s films and contributing to the Komeda album Astigmatic, one of the defining recordings of new European jazz. The trumpeter would reassess this period of his life on the widely-acclaimed Litania in 1997. Tomasz made his ECM debut in 1975 with the great Balladyna album featuring Tomasz Szukalski on tenor sax, Dave Holland on bass and Edward Vesala on drums. Stanko and the Finnish drummer enjoyed a close artistic friendship, playing together in various configurations including Vesala’s large ensemble on Satu. Like his early hero Miles Davis, Stanko was a discerning bandleader and each of his groups had its own distinct character. Matka Joanna and Leosia, with Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin and Tony Oxley balanced lyricism and turbulent free play. The band on From The Green Hill – with its unusual frontline featuring Stanko, John Surman, Dino Saluzzi and classical violinist Michelle Makarski - grew out of an experimental session at an ECM festival in Badenweiler. Soul of Things introduced the world at large to the talents of Marcin Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz and Michal Miskiewicz, and on Suspended Night and Lontano, one could hear their improvisational capacities opening up under Stanko’s guidance. Wasilewski and co always hailed Tomasz as their mentor, a claim he would modestly wave away: “No, no – I’ve learned just as much from them.” Dark Eyes pooled the talents of young improvisers from the North, with two Danes (Jakob Bro and Anders Christensen) and two Finns (Alexi Tuomarila and Olavi Louhivuori) in a programme referencing music originally written to accompany plays of Swedish writer Lars Norén, as well as a title track inspired by an Oskar Kokoschka painting. “Everything you experience gets into the music,” Tomasz said, “but I’ve always been touched as much by art as by anything else in life. Fiction, poetry, film, the theatre. The visual arts especially. The way a painter uses paint, or the way he approaches form, distorting it to abstraction, or painting naturalistically or poetically ... these aspects can be paralleled in my musical language, in the way I shape a melody line.” By the early 2000s, Stanko was splitting his time between New York and Warsaw, subsequently founding a New York Quartet, strikingly free of native New Yorkers, for the album Wisława with Cuban born pianist David Virelles, Detroit drummer Gerald Cleaver, and Californian bassist Thomas Morgan, replaced on December Avenue by Reuben Rogers from the Virgin Islands. In all of his groups Tomasz encouraged freedom of expression and he derived great pleasure from the improvisational contributions of his musicians. Before becoming ill earlier this year he was looking forward to touring in a new quintet with fellow trumpeter Enrico Rava, pianist Giovanni Guidi and the New York Quartet rhythm team of Reuben Rogers and Gerald Cleaver. Friends since 1965, Stanko and Rava had touched on almost all aspects of modern jazz in the course of their long careers – from the freest free playing (both had worked with Cecil Taylor and with Globe Unity) to the tenderest Chet Baker and Miles Davis - inspired balladry – and in concert were developing a broad programme to reflect all of this. Carrying on the theme of ambient ‘post-rock’ music that featured in the first ever episode, I’ve chosen three beautiful tracks that I particularly think of at dusk. That half-light is an ideal visual for this style of atmospheric music, and it’s presented here without interruptions or long opening spiel. Sometimes a person can be in the right place, just not quite at the right time. So it was for Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila. After his debut album with his quartet, Voices of Pohjola (Igloo Records, 2001), he signed to Warner Jazz in the early '00s, while he was still in his 20s. The second quartet album, 02 (Warner Jazz), appeared in 2003. Tuomarila seemed poised for great things. Then a sudden decision by the label to cut its jazz roster left him high and dry. It was a shock, a decision that threatened his career and caused him to leave music behind for a few months while he reflected on events. Eventually he returned to the music scene and carved out an increasingly vibrant career without the aid of a major label. By 2005 he'd formed the Alexi Tuomarila Trio, releasing the trio's debut album, Constellation (Jazzaway), that same year. In his All About Jazz review of Seven Hills (Edition Records, 2013), the second album from the Alexi Tuomarila Trio, John Kelman describes the Finnish pianist as "not just a pianist of watch-worthy merit, but a composer of equal value." Tuomarila's talent is being recognized by an increasing array of jazz writers and musicians. Brad Mehldau was one of the first internationally known musicians to sing the pianist's praises. More recently, Tuomarila was invited by Tomasz Stanko to join his quintet: he performs on Dark Eyes (ECM, 2009). Seven Hills is named for Lisbon, the Portuguese capital city, which is built on seven hills. The city is also home to Timbuktu Studios, where the trio recorded the album. Tuomarila, bassist Mats Eilertsen, and drummer Olavi Louhivuori are all Scandinavian—Eilertsen is from Norway, Louhivuori from Finland—and Northern Europe has plenty of recording facilities on offer. So why travel to Portugal? Tuomarila is happy to explain. "I was planning to make a new album with Mats and Olavi. I decided to go to Lisbon because I knew Andre Fernandes. He's an amazing guitarist and he has a studio in the city. I asked him if we could use his studio. He has a great piano, a Yamaha C7. I decided to go there and see what happened." The trio recorded Seven Hills in September 2011, without the backing of a record label. Tuomarila took time before deciding to release it, then took the completed album to Dave Stapleton at Edition Records in the UK. "I wasn't really sure if I wanted to release it at first. Eventually I decided it was good enough to release. I had known Dave a little for about 10 years. I was looking for a label and Dave was interested." Tuomarila's name is at the head of the trio but the band is clearly much more than a "pianist plus supporting musicians" setup. Both Louhivuori and Eilertsen compose—the drummer gets the same number of composer credits on Seven Hills as Tuomarila—and they are also more than capable of soloing. Tuomarila's enthusiasm for his compatriots comes across clearly when he talks about them. "I trust them so much, they are such amazing musicians. Their compositions are so beautiful I just wanted to play them. The chemistry between us works so well that nobody has to be the leader. We can build things together and give freedom to each other." Tuomarila, Eilertsen, and Louhivuori arrived in Lisbon without having made any final decisions about the intended record. "We didn't plan the album. We just decided to go to Lisbon and record. So there was a lot of free improvisation. We decided eventually to concentrate on songs, although there are a few improvised sections. We could have done an album of improvisation but we decided we wanted to play the songs." Tuomarila had already decided to ask Fernandes to play, but here, again, the plans were far from finalized. "Before I went to Lisbon I had already decided I wanted to record with Andre. I had played with him before, a long time ago, so I wanted him on a couple of tracks." Fernandes performs on "Ceremony" and "Prologue." "I made the decision about one minute before we recorded. I just gave him the scores. He hadn't seen them before, we didn't rehearse, we went straight to the recording, playing everything in the moment. Although the trio has been in existence for eight years, Seven Hills is only its second album. This might suggest that the three musicians have had few opportunities to play together, but this isn't the case, as Tuomarila explains. "The first time we played together as a trio was in 2005. Since then we've been playing regularly. It feels so natural, we don't have to talk about things too much."
