I’m Soph, not Sophie. She/Her, big time trans chick. Also go by Faceshopper.
Marvel’s Voices: Pride (2022)
In the short story LGBT-D, writer Grace Freud introduces a host of new characters who are attending a support group for super-powered trans youth. Among them is a young woman named Soph, a shape-shifter who uses the codename “Faceshopper.” This character is an homage to the late artist SOPHIE, a transgender musician who rose to prominence in the 2010s. The story implies that Soph was likely influenced by SOPHIE when choosing both her name and super-heroic moniker.
Sophie Xeon, known to the world as SOPHIE, was a trail-blazing artist and producer of pop music. In addition to her prolific songwriting and production credits on mainstream albums, SOPHIE was a pioneer of the hyperpop genre, and her unique sound and creative vision are hallmarks of modern LGBT artistry. Sophie Xeon passed away in January, 2021.
Faceshopping was released in 2018, and featured on the landmark album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Check the song here, or watch the video below. (warning: flashing images, strobe lights)
its the way immaterial is at the end of the album, after is it cold in the water? infatuation, not okay, pretending, all these devastating songs that capture the feeling of being lost and so far away from everything, like to me this album paints a picture of being millions of light years away from all civilization, there's songs in this album that are like ego death in audio format. its the going through hell and choosing to come back to joy. oh god. god. oh my god. and she just shared that with us, to the trans community like a hand on the shoulder saying "I know." Like until I found this album, I had never heard any music conveying this kind of emotion specifically about the trans experience, and it hits so personally. Its like somebody took the silent invisible pain of isolation and said "look, its real. you exist through me. heres what it sounds like." and she summarises all that lyrically in immaterial where the isolation is ended through recognition of the self in the other. I am sobbing.
Happy early birthday to the most beautiful angel of Hyperpop and immaterial girls and boys 💜🫧✨
Sophie Xeon’s Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides album but redrawn as ‘A Water Baby’ painting, I’m in love with the album cover so much honesty, it’s definitely giving the energy of how Victorians would imagine future art and music, the way the dress looks like it, Venus like setting. Sophie is the Art after all 🪽🐚
À friend is having a birthday this weekend and it's music themed so we're supposed to dress as anything music related, so I'm going to take my best crack at making this iconic fit
