A short fic wherein Tai and Ashevin discuss the economy of their town Nivalis and a new contract given to them their citizen.

"So what do you think ?"

He doesn't know why, but he's expecting a little more interest or gusto as Ashevin peers over the paper he's presented.

Strings of words and descriptions of a contract that's meant to improve their economy and keep the guild upright without inflating their entire currency system. It'd also keep one of the most opportunist capitalist in town (looking at you Layer) under control.

Instead she seems nearly disinterested as she passes the pages back to them.

He can see exhaustion occupying the light in her eyes and he pretends he doesn't notice.

"I mean the economy is your thing. Your responsibility. It's your call."

Yes.

He knows.

He knows it is - but still.

She is his work partner - and a co government cannot run without someone to consult in.

"yes, but this could change Nivalis by the extremes." Tai pushes the papers back to Ashevin for her to examine - and they don't pick it back up. "I think it's a grand idea." They yawn, "but it's your expertise. It's your call."

"I know." He frowns. "But your support is important to me. I'd at the very least like your input."

And he knows - he usually doesn't put much thought or effort into work.

But he's had nothing but floral paper - and maybe he's had a bit to drink, yes - but that doesn't matter.

"I think we should change it to a 60-40." She glances down at the amount of compensation - which is important, yes - but Tai thinks it's the least important part of the contract. "Okay."

And admittedly - he had overlooked that detail - so he takes it down immediately.

But he doesn't want to talk about that.

He wants to talk about the changes, and the economy - and the people. He wants to talk about what they should insist in order to protect them from abuse of contract.

And maybe they think about the chocolate coin in their pocket, and the person that gave it to them, and finds even though they're wary of him - he is also a citizen - someone they have to keep safe and help.

An emotion surges in his chest and he pretends he doesn't feel it.

"Besides."

They are still writing and she is speaking.

"Aren't contracts your thing ?"

"What ?"

The pen stops moving and he doesn't look up- because it sounds like she's going to say something that they hate.

"You're a Fae. Isn't your whole thing contracts and deals ?"

It's the first time he ever bares his teeth at them, and it doesn't fit the appearance he's chosen for himself.

Because he hasn't felt remotely like a Fae in centuries.

"I gave up that side of me for you."

And it isn't her - but Nivalis he speaks to.

His heritage.

His culture.

To fit into their needs and desires.

To call him a Fae, when they have given up everything that made them feel like their nature - is nothing short of cruel.

Because he no longer resembles his father, and the space that used to hold the weight of his wings is gone.

He was not human.

But no longer could he call himself Fae, because he has given up every part of him that was deserving of such a title.

"The least I would like to have - is your support beside me."

They don't look at her, because it would betray their desire to conceal their dishonesty.

"As my fellow Guild Master - that is what I expect from you."

But he does not hide his resentment.

And quietly, he allows the distance between them to grow.
